'Dad based his philosophy on self-help. In his early years dad said heprayed for help. When he got older he prayed for help to help others.

And when he was 75 he said he prayed for others to help themselves.'

By Kirby PringleNews-Gazette Staff Writer

Was a time when Charles PhillipsST. walked the muddy streets ofChampaign's north end and waspained by what he saw: tar pa-

per shacks — some without floors, electric-ity or running water. In some instances, three or four homes shared a single out-house.

It was 1939 and John Steinbeck had justpublished, "Grapes of Wrath." Steinbeckconcentrated on the plight of poor, whitedirt farmers in dustbowl Oklahoma.

Phillips concentrated on the plight of

blacks who were snared in the grip of pov-erty and racism. But instead of writingabout it, he did something about the con-ditions and helped them get new homes, and a sense of dignity.

"I remember him as a dedicated busi-nessman who had a deep concern for thestatus of his people," said his daughter, Es-ther Phillips Kemp of Urbana. "It seems tome he was born with this burning desireto leave the world a little bit better place."

Dear Mrsr'-Scott:

The United Negro College Fund sincerely appreciatesthe recent contribution of $3,000 to its 1987 "LouRawls Parade of Stars" Telethon by the National Councilof Negro Women/Champaign-Urbana Chapter. The increasedsupport is clear testimony that you care deeply aboutthe cause of black higher education.

As you know, many of the 45,000 UNCF students comefrom impoverished backgrounds and would be unableto attend college without the assistance providedthrough gifts of this type.

It is through strong, long-term relationships suchas the College Fund enjoys with the National Councilof Negro Women/Champaign-Urbana Chapter that itscritical work is sustained. I hope that we continueto warrant your care and support.

Cordially,

Area DevelopmentDirector
