Given the increasing rate of problems in the world we need

more change makers and problem solvers than ever before. In

this course, students will learn how they could develop

creative solutions to address social problems. The intention of

the course is to equip young people with knowledge, skills and

tools to transform their world into institutions of social

innovation that leverages resources to realize their new global

role as engine for social change to develop generations of

competent and confident social entrepreneurs and change

makers.

Students in this course will gain knowledge about social entrepreneurship and how it is creating solutions to address societal problems. They learn how to develop creative solutions to address social problems, and empower others to appreciate and undertake social entrepreneurship as a force for social change. The course is designed for young people who want to gain valuable tools to prepare themselves to make an impact on the lives of others.

This social entrepreneurship course is designed to introduce the concept as well as engage students and the tutor in a joint learning experience of this emerging field. Through the course, students will:

Be exposed to the concept of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises and how social entrepreneurs are transforming society to deliver social impact in their home communities and abroad.

Understand the role of measuring impact and how to quantify the social impact for investors, donors, and beneficiaries to help ensure that scarce resources are utilized appropriately.

Develop and implement experimental projects which address social challenges in their institution or community

Be aware of how they might apply social entrepreneurship skills in their future pursuits to address social problems.

Course Duration: This course is for a period of 10 weeks, approximately 10

hours per week and therefore a total of 100 study hours.

Methods of Assessment:1. Three (3) written Assignments to be submitted online of

about 800 - 1000 word count for each Assignment2. Five (5) quizzes to be written online with a duration of 1

hour per quiz3. Three (3) video PowerPoint presentations (3 – 5 min.

duration) describing an identified problem, the solution and expected impact

4. One experimental social entrepreneurial project to be started before the end of the course.

5. A written exam to be sited for at a three (3) days end of the course seminar.

The teaching methods for this course include:

Individual or group activity on a topic area of interest to the

students on social change. Weekly discussion and reflection questions on readings. Short activities to support readings. Online polls with student feedback. Mini cases and videos about a social entrepreneur. Weekly exercises to enhance learning from writing their own social

value proposition to completing a theory of change. Weekly shared student journal/discussion (blog, webinars or other

user friendly online tool) to share with peers.

By the end of this course students will be expected to:

Understand the complexity of social change and the concept of social entrepreneurship.

Develop and implement entrepreneurial projects that will make societal impact in their institution or community

Mobilize and train other young people to become social innovators and change makers in their community

By the end of this course students will be expected to have gained the following:

Knowledge and understanding of the meaning of social entrepreneurship, how its principles have been applied to address social problems, and what challenges are faced by those wishing to adopt social entrepreneurship methods.

Gain knowledge and understanding about social

entrepreneurship, challenges faced by social entrepreneurs and learn the role of developing a sustainable business model that addresses a social problem.

Learn how social entrepreneurs have applied social entrepreneurship principles to address social problems, gain the ability to empower disadvantaged community members to create social change and develop their own skills to be the change they wish to see in the world.

1. Should have a desktop or laptop computer

2. Should be computer literate i.e. able to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, file downloading and uploading etc.

3. Must have access to internet at least 3 times a week

4. Must have an active email address where you will receive information update

5. Should be a student or an active member of community, group or organization

6. Should be age between 18 and 35 years old.

7. Must be a Zambian or currently living in Zambia

8. Must be able to attend a three (3) days seminar in Lusaka at the end of the course
