Welcome to the 2015-2016 academic year. I hope you had a relaxing, enjoyable summer and are energized for the new school year. It will prove to be one of growth and flexibility for our District, as we continue to col-laborate on exciting new ventures. Construction crews spent this summer hard at work, beginning the major two-year renovation project at Cleve-land Heights High School, as well as putting the final touches on the Wiley campus to be used as a swing space for the high school. It won’t be long before we see our dreams of a beautiful, 21st century facility come to life.

As we all know, change isn’t always easy. But as our community has proven, it can be embraced with passion and enthusiasm. In May, hun-dreds joined us to say goodbye to Heights High as we know it during a groundbreaking and farewell ceremony in the courtyard. That event was both a beautiful tribute to the school’s rich history and an exciting look into a future filled with modern educational opportunities for our students. It’s now one of my fondest memories that I’ve collected during my superintendency.

Further proving our educators’ commitment to growth and improvement, I am happy to report that for the second year in a row, our District has scored four out of four “A’s” on the State Progress Report Card. Our stu-dents and staff have shown remarkable growth in the Progress measure for grades 4-8, scoring “A’s” in all four categories – Overall, Gifted Students, Lower 20% and Students with Disabilities. As you’ll see throughout this calendar, our District has so much to be proud of, in areas of academics, athletics, the arts and more. But as an objective leader, I know there are areas upon which we need to improve.

That’s why for the past year, stakeholders including students, parents, staff, the Board of Education and community leaders have been working together to develop a comprehensive Five-Year Strategic Plan for the District. A set of achievable, measurable goals has been established by the Strategic Planning Committee, surfacing from data and input collected

through community meetings, facilitated discussions, online public surveys, ad-hoc sessions and ongoing work with a strategic planning expert. Always through the lens of the students’ best interests and educational equity, our strategic planning has a focus on action steps and accountability.

With feedback from all stakeholders, the SPC has crafted new aspirations that include a new mission statement for our District: Our schools provide a challenging and engaging education to prepare all our students to become responsible citizens and succeed in college and career. This mission is fresh and energizing; it will serve as a daily guide for anyone and everyone in our District who works to improve our students’ academic success.

We’ll be rolling out and implementing our Strategic Plan this year. It is going to take further collaboration among our entire school community and partnerships to see it through. But as I’ve learned in my first academic year as superintendent, Tiger Nation understands the importance of teamwork in getting things done for our students. It’s one of my favorite things about this community, and why I am confident about our potential as we move forward.

I feel so excited about the direction we’re headed – it is clear, it is bright, and it is a promising future for all children who walk through our doors. Our Path to Student Success is one that we will walk together.

Sincerely,

Dr. Talisa L. DixonCleveland Heights-University Heights Superintendent

GREETINGS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:

Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District

Twelve students in the Minority Student Achieve-ment Network (MSAN) at Heights High attended the national conference in Michigan in October, inspiring the students to later create a mentoring program, encouraging participation and success in Honors and AP courses.

Nearly 110 third grade students at Fairfax and Noble elementary schools helped produce a 2-minute animated short film called Little Lumpy’s Launch, based on the book Little Lumpy’s Book of Blessings, written by Reverend Leah C.K. Lewis.

Heights alum (’12) Geoffrey Golden was named the winner of the BET gospel singing competition show Sunday Best in August 2014, with the help of votes and support from many Heights community members.

The Superintendent’s Student Cadre got an early tour of the temporary Heights High on the Wiley Campus as crews continued renovations. The temporary Heights High will be in use from 2015-2017.

Students and staff at Roxboro Elementary celebrated their record-breaking American Heart Association “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser total of $10,654.74 - the highest amount ever raised by a school in the eastern region.

Nearly 50 volunteers helped build two outdoor learning spaces and a rain garden in the backyard of Boulevard Elementary, featuring an area for small group instruction work and more. Photo by Jeff Piorkowski/Special to Northeast Ohio Media Group

LAST YEAR IN 2014-2015…

Days after leading The Ohio State University to a 42-20 National Championship win over Oregon, quarterback Cardale Jones stopped by Heights High to see his former Glenville Coach Scott Niedzwiecki, currently a science teacher, and meet with students and staff.

Canterbury Elementary hosted a family bicycle event called All Geared Up, which included a one- and two-mile bike ride, rodeo, safety clinics, a bike swap and health and fitness information tables.

The Heights High Art Club and their advisers, art teachers Laura Skehan and Claire Raack, designed and painted a three-dimensional mural for the Lee Road library featuring images of Cleveland Heights neighborhoods, the Lee Road Library and the renovated high school.

The gym at Oxford on February 26 was turned into a festive celebration of Chinese New Year; from lion and ribbon dances to Chinese yo-yo, Oxford’s talented students nailed every performance.

A grant for nearly $500,000 from the Ohio Depart-ment of Education will allow Gearity Professional Development School to transform its learning spaces, using technology as a teaching tool, in a project called DigiLit (Digital Literacy).

2014-2015 Monticello Middle eighth graders Taylor Averytt, Aleysia Brooks and Treasure Eiland became the first students in the District to be selected to participate in the coveted Cleveland Clinic summer internship, Healthcare+ Pathways.

Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School DistrictBOARD OF EDUCATION

GOALS STATEMENTThe Board of Education continues to be committed to achieving “Excellence in Learning through Excellence in Teaching” and ensuring quality education in support of our communities’ commitment to quality integrated living. Our priorities include the following:

• Continue to emphasize competency and proficiency in basic studies and target results for measurable improvement.• Every high school student will have a four-year plan that encourages the pursuit of academic work at the highest level of which he/she is capable. The plan will have as its goal that the student will be prepared for career and/or college entry upon graduation from high school.• Promote better communications among schools, the school district, and their constituencies.• Continue to ensure quality fiscal planning and management, demonstrated by financial reporting beyond State requirements.• The District will give attention to the appropriate placement and instruction of each transfer student.• Monitor and assess program effectiveness of school district programs for all departments and schools.

BOARD OF EDUCATION: Questions & AnswersQ: Who makes up the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education?A: Five elected members serve overlapping four-year terms.

Q: When are Board meetings?A: The Board meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of every month unless there is a conflict with a major holiday.

Q: What are “Special Meetings” of the Board?A: These are meetings called by the President, the Treasurer, or any two members of the Board. They send a written notice with a time, date, place, and purpose for the meeting to each member of the Board two days prior to the meeting. These meetings are “work sessions” for the Board and are usually scheduled for the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.

Q: When may the Board call an executive session?A: The Board may call executive sessions:

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY • CH-UH COUNCIL OF PTAS

Dear Parents, Teachers, Staff, Administration, Students, and Community – Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!

The CH-UH Council of PTAs has established a great relationship with the CH-UH City School District and administrators over the last several years. Our current mission is to enhance that relationship with the exciting hope of re-engaging our District’s parents, staff, volunteers, community, and board members.

Moving into the 21st century learning style, we look forward to coming together to watch today’s children become our future and to plan the education for children yet to be born. This will take the focus and determination of all of us.

We believe in our schools. We know our students deserve the best. To provide this, we must stand united as a community and hold ourselves accountable. Each day our District faces some type of economic change. Our community needs to work together to solve these economic challenges.

There is a place for everyone to help and grow within the CH-UH District. If you’re not already involved, please consider volunteering with the PTA or other groups within our schools and community.
