Groups

• Pharisees-taught Torah and how to apply laws to people

• Sadducees- how Torah applied to priests and temples

• Essenes- lived in desert- spent lives praying and waiting to be delivered from Romans– Believed created the Dead Sea Scrolls

Zealots v. Rome

• Jews waiting for Messiah-sent from god• Zealots-wanted to overthrow Romans• Roman’s are thrown out, but return in 4 years• Romans later kill thousands and destroy

temple• Western Wall is all that remains• Rome forbids Jews to live in Jerusalem and

renames Palestine

Jewish Faith

• Jewish teachers—no longer called priests—called Rabi

• Johanan ben Zakkai—famous Rabbi, founded Torah schools

• Create Talmud—book still important today
