Instrument Safety Precautions

WARNING

Risk of operator injury if:

• All doors, covers and panels are not closed and secured in place prior to and

during instrument operation.

• The integrity of safety interlocks and sensors is compromised.

• You contact moving parts.

• You mishandle broken parts.

• Doors, covers and panels are not opened, closed, removed and/or replaced

with care.

• Improper tools are used for troubleshooting.

To avoid injury:

• Keep doors, covers and panels closed and secured in place while the

instrument in use.

• Take full advantage of the safety features of the instrument. Do not defeat

safety interlocks and sensors.

• Acknowledge and act upon instrument alarms and error messages.

• Keep away from moving parts.

• Report any broken parts to your Beckman Coulter Representative.

• Use the proper tools when troubleshooting.

CAUTION

System integrity could be compromised and operational failures could occur if:

• This equipment is used in a manner other than specified. Operate the

instrument as instructed in the Product Manuals.

• You introduce software that is not authorized by Beckman Coulter into your

computer. Only operate your system’s computer with software authorized by

Beckman Coulter.

• You install software that is not an original copyrighted version. Only use

software that is an original copyrighted version to prevent virus

contamination.

Moving Parts or Sharp Objects

WARNING

Risk of personal injury. To avoid injury due to moving parts, observe the following:

• Never attempt to exchange labware, reagents, or tools while the instrument

is operating.

• Never attempt to physically restrict any of the moving components of the

instrument.

• Keep the instrument work area clear to prevent obstruction of the movement.

Electrical Safety

To prevent electrically related injuries and property damage, properly inspect all electrical equipment prior to use and immediately report any electrical deficiencies. Contact a Beckman Coulter Representative for any servicing of equipment requiring the removal of covers or panels.

High Voltage Electric Shock Risk Symbol

This symbol indicates that there is high voltage and there is a risk of electric shock, and the operator should use care when accessing this area.

RoHS Notices

Sharp Object Label

This symbol indicates that there are sharp objects, and the operator should use care when accessing this area.

Mobile Cart Caution Label

A label cautioning users when moving the cart or adjusting the height of the cart can be found on the CESI 8000 Mobile Cart.

The CESI 8000 instrument is situated on the mobile cart. The OptiMS cartridge spray tip (also known as the consumable) on the CESI 8000 instrument has to be in very close proximity to a Mass Spec when the system is used. To avoid damage to the OptiMS consumable, remove it from the MS adapter before adjusting the height or moving the cart.

RoHS Notices

These labels and materials declaration table (the Table of Hazardous Substance’s Name and Concentration) are to meet People’s Republic of China Electronic Industry Standard SJ/T11364-2006 “Marking for Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products” requirements.

China RoHS Caution Label

This label indicates that the electronic information product contains certain toxic or hazardous substances. The center number is the Environmentally Friendly Use Period (EFUP) date, and indicates the number of calendar years the product can be in operation. Upon the expiration of the

EFUP, the product must be immediately recycled. The circling arrows indicate the product is recyclable. The date code on the label or product indicates the date of manufacture.

China RoHS Environmental Label

This label indicates that the electronic information product does not contain any toxic or hazardous substances. The center “e” indicates the product is environmentally safe and does not have an Environmentally Friendly Use Period (EFUP) date. Therefore, it can safely be used indefinitely. The circling arrows indicate the product is recyclable. The date code on the label or product indicates the date of manufacture.

Other Instrument Labels

This section provides information for some labels and symbols appearing on the CESI 8000 instrument housing. These labels and symbols may be associated with user-serviceable procedures. Individual hazards associated with a specific procedure in this manual may use these labels and symbols, and are included in Warnings or Cautions within the procedures for that task.

Recycling Label (WEEE)

The symbol of a crossed-out wheeled bin on the product is required in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive of the European Union.

The presence of this marking on the product indicates:

• That the device was put on the European Market after August 13, 2005 and

• That the device is not to be disposed via the municipal waste collection system of any member state of the European Union.

For products under the requirement of WEEE directive, please contact your dealer or local Beckman Coulter office for the proper decontamination information and details on the take back program

that facilitates proper collection, treatment, recovery, recycling, and safe disposal of this device.

Other Instrument Labels

CE Mark Label

The CE symbol is a conformity marking indicating that the CESI 8000 instrument meets the requirements of applicable European Conformity directives within the European Economic Area (EEA).

C-Tick Mark Label

The C-Tick symbol on the CESI 8000 instrument is an identification marking indicating that the instrument is compliant with applicable electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for the Australian and New Zealand markets.

CSA Mark Label

The CSA symbol on the CESI 8000 instrument indicates that the instrument has been certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing laboratory (NRTL) to applicable Laboratory Equipment Safety Standards for the United States and Canada.

This manual details the necessary site preparation required before installing the CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System. Pay careful attention to the specifications and requirements described in this manual. Accurate and timely preparation allows the Beckman Coulter Field Service Engineer to install the instrument efficiently upon arrival.

The supplies you must have on hand prior to the installation of the instrument are specified. Also provided is a list of accessories available.

Preinstallation Requirements

Preparation Check List

The following is a summarized list of the requirements that must be addressed, and the components that must be obtained, prior to installation. To ensure a successful installation, please verify that the requirements have been fulfilled and that you have the system components listed below. When completed, contact your local Beckman Coulter representative to schedule the installation.

IMPORTANT CESI 8000 customers (i.e., up to two operators) must be Mass Spectrometer trained, willing to

be trained, and available to operate the Mass Spectrometer during installation.

CESI 8000 Requirements

Use this list to check the requirements that must be fulfilled at your site prior to installation.

• All reagents must be ordered and present at the site by the time of installation (Preparing the Site in CHAPTER 2, Site Requirements and Specifications)

• Suitable laboratory environment (CHAPTER 2, Site Requirements and Specifications)

• Appropriate space for cart and instrument (Space and Ventilation Requirements in CHAPTER 2, Site Requirements and Specifications)

Site Requirements and Specifications

Preparing the Site

Appropriate site preparation includes verifying:

• The site layout provides adequate work space for the instrument refer to CESI 8000 System Specifications and Space and Ventilation Requirements.

• The mobile cart holding the CESI 8000 instrument and computer system is level and stable so that normal operations of the instrument and computer does not cause the cart to shift, jerk, or sway (refer to CESI 8000 Mobile Cart).

• The site has adequate electrical supply and power quality for CESI 8000 operation (refer to Electrical Requirements).

NOTE The power plug for the CESI 8000 instrument serves as the Disconnecting Device and must

remain easily accessible.

The CESI 8000 Mobile Cart is designed to provide the tabletop space where the CESI 8000 instrument can be placed. The cart will also hold all of the hardware components that are shipped as the CESI 8000 Computer System. Table 2.3 shows the specifications for the CESI 8000 Mobile Cart. The dimensions for the CESI 8000 instrument are also shown in Figure 2.1.

Beckman Coulter validates the CESI 8000 software (includes 32 Karat software) for use with the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32-bit operating system. In addition, the software design incorporates wide-screen monitor capability for increased workspace. To operate the system properly, use a validated PC (controller). Beckman Coulter validates the controllers to meet all system requirements. The specifications for the CESI 8000 Computer System are shown in Table 2.4.

The CESI 8000 Mobile Cart is designed to hold the CESI 8000 Computer System (listed above).

IMPORTANT Users must have Administrator or Power user permission on the local workstation.

Mass Spec Software Requirements

The AB SCIEX 5600 MS requires the following software to properly interact with the CESI 8000:

• Analyst TF 1.6 (Build 6211)

A Thermo Scientific MS requires the following software to properly interact with the CESI 8000:

• Xcalibur

Space and Ventilation Requirements

The CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System must be installed on a level and stable working surface capable of supporting 226.7 kg to 272.1 kg (500 to 600 lbs) without bowing by more than 6.35 mm (1/8 in.)

Space Requirements

The CESI 8000 Mobile Cart dimensions are shown in Figure 2.2. In addition to space for the cart itself, allow additional space for the CESI 8000 instrument. Figure 2.3 illustrates the recommended system setup.

IMPORTANT For the AB SCIEX CE-MS configuration, a 14-ft Ethernet cable is provided. The maximum space

though between the CESI 8000 and an AB SCIEX 5600 controller should not exceed 13 ft.

Ventilation Requirements

Adequate space must be provided around the CESI 8000 instrument for ventilation and access to the communication connectors. Allow at least 4 inches on all sides. Refer to Figure 2.1 for overall CESI 8000 instrument dimensions.

Electrical Requirements

CAUTION

The CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System should be connected to an

uninterruptible power source to avoid exposure to an erratic power supply. An

erratic power supply could damage the power supply of the CESI 8000 instrument

or other electrical components. Consult with your local UPS Supplier to determine

the proper model for your system.

NOTE The power plug for the CESI 8000 instrument serves as the Disconnecting Device and must remain

easily accessible.

The power line to the laboratory should connect directly from a main power line transformer at a power source known to be clear of erratic power loads, spikes, and electromagnetic interference. Power lines reserved for the instrument must have adequate reserve capacity. Normal loading should not exceed 50% of nominal capacity to allow for start-up loads and the addition of new instruments.

Additional Electrical Requirements

The CESI 8000 instrument is shipped with a power cord suitable for North America (nominal 120 VAC, 60 Hz) installations. When necessary, a power cord suitable for non-North America installations will be provided by Beckman Coulter. The instrument requires one grounded electrical outlet.

NOTE There is one universal power strip bolted to the CESI 8000 Cart tabletop that will supply power to the

CESI 8000 instrument, the cart, the controller (PC), and the monitor. The cart has one external cord that

is used to provide power to the tabletop universal power strip.

Verify that the installation site provides the proper electrical supply to the CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System and any accessories requiring power. Table 2.5 defines the electrical requirements CESI 8000 system components.

CHAPTER 3

Preparing CESI 8000 for Setup

Upon Receiving the CESI 8000 System

The CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System is shipped within several boxes. Each box should be moved to the selected installation site. A Beckman Coulter Field Service Engineer will unpack the boxes and set up the system at installation.

CESI 8000 system preparation includes:

• Moving the Boxes

• Confirming the Setup

• Safety Considerations During Setup

Moving the Boxes

When the boxes arrive, please inspect all of the boxes. Then move them to an appropriate area so that they can be unpacked by the Beckman Coulter Field Service Engineer.

IMPORTANT If there is any visible and significant damage to any of the boxes, do not receive the shipment.

Contact your local dealer or your local Beckman Coulter representative for further instruction.

IMPORTANT If the shipment has already been accepted and damage had/has occurred during shipment, a

damage claim needs to be filed within 14 days of arrival.

NOTE Do not open the boxes until a Beckman Coulter Field Service Engineer arrives.

Confirming the Setup

After the boxes have been moved to the installation site, contact the local Beckman Coulter Customer Technical Support Center to schedule an on-site appointment with a Field Service Engineer. When the Field Service Engineer arrives, he or she will unpack the components from the boxes, and set up the CESI 8000 High Performance Separation System in the desired location.

Safety Considerations During Setup

When the Field Services Representative arrives to unbox and set up your unit, ensure the following precaution is observed:

CAUTION

A minimum of four people is needed to lift the CESI 8000 instrument. Failure to do

so could result in bodily injury and/or damage to the instrument.

MS Setup

If you are using a Thermo Scientific MS, prior to installing the NanoSpray II source ensure that the 1-inch adapter ring for dynamic nano spray is not installed. See Figure 3.1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to remove this part.

CHAPTER 4

CESI 8000 System Training

Pre-Training Requirements

After the system has been installed, a Beckman Coulter Field Engineer will train up to two operators in basic CESI 8000 system operation.

IMPORTANT The CESI 8000 customers (i.e., up to two operators) must be Mass Spectrometer trained and

willing to operate the Mass Spectrometer during installation.

Successful implementation of the installation is dependent upon the training environment. To ensure a focused and optimized training session, follow these guidelines:

1. It is important that the operators are available and uninterrupted throughout the entire training period.

2. No more than two operators can be trained on the system at any given time.

System operation requires a basic knowledge of Windows 7 Professional. Operators must have the following skills:

• Use Add/Remove programs

• Create, open, save, edit, move, and copy files

• Perform disk management operations

Beckman Coulter, Inc.Warranty and Returned Goods Requirements

All standard Beckman Coulter, Inc. policies governing returned goods apply to this product. Subject to the exceptions and upon the conditions stated below, the Company warrants that the products sold under this sales agreement shall be free from defects in workmanship and materials for one year after delivery of the products to the original Purchaser by the Company, and if any such product should prove to be defective within such one year period, the Company agrees, at its option, either (1) to correct by repair or at the Company’s election by replacement, any such defective product provided that investigation and factory inspection discloses that such defect developed under normal and proper use, or (2) to refund the purchase price. The exceptions and conditions mentioned above are as follows:

1. Components or accessories manufactured by the Company which by their nature are not intended to and will not function for one year are warranted only to reasonable service for a reasonable time. What constitutes a reasonable time and a reasonable service shall be determined solely by the Company. A complete list of such components and accessories is maintained at the factory.

2. The Company makes no warranty with respect to components or accessories not manufactured by it. In the event of defect in any such component or accessory, the Company will give reasonable assistance to Purchaser in obtaining the manufacturer’s own warranty.

3. Any product claimed to be defective must, if required by the Company, be returned to the factory, properly decontaminated of any chemical, biological, or radioactive hazardous material, transportation charges prepaid, and will be returned to the Purchaser with transportation charges collect unless the product is found to be defective.

4. The Company shall be released from all obligations under all warranties, either expressed or implied, if any product covered hereby is repaired or modified by persons other than its own authorized service personnel, unless such repair by others is made with the written consent of the Company.

5. If the product is a reagent or the like, it is warranted only to conform to the quantity and content and for the period (but not in excess of one year) stated on the label at the time of delivery.

It is expressly agreed that the above warranty shall be in lieu of all warranties of fitness and of the warranty of merchantability, and that the company shall have no liability for special or consequential damages of any kind or from any cause whatsoever arising out of the manufacture, use, sale, handling, repair, maintenance, or replacement of any of the products sold under the sales agreement.

Representatives and warranties made by any person, including dealers and representatives of the Company, which are consistent or in conflict with the terms of this warranty, shall not be binding upon the Company unless reduced in writing and approved by an expressly authorized officer of the Company.

Parts replaced during the warranty period are warranted to the end of the instrument warranty.

NOTEPerformance characteristics and specifications are only warranted when Beckman Coulter replacement parts are used.

Except as provided in writing signed by an officer to Beckman Coulter, Inc., this system and any related documentation are provided “as is” without warranty of any kind, expressed or implied, including that the system is “error free.” This information is presented in good faith, but Beckman Coulter does not warrant, guarantee, or make any representations regarding the use or the results of the use of this system and related documentation in terms of correctness, accuracy, reliability, currentness, omissions, or otherwise. The entire risk as to the use, results, and performance of this system and related documentation is assumed by the user.
