CESAR & RUBEN: Connecting Social Justice and Personal Peace Martyrs chasing a dream They come across the rivers and the scrubby deserts seeking a better life for themselves and their families, welcomed by a culture seeking cheap labor to harvest its crops and maximize its profits. A biography of a Mexican immigrant talks about the ones who die in the process as "martyrs chasing a dream" and gives the many reasons as to why migrant workers must stay nomadic. They base America as the future, and Mexico as being the impoverished, backwards past. They are only able to bear remaining in the past for so long, but the future - which is so distant from their friends and family ..:._ is often equally unbearable, a separation for the people.

Around the turn of the century they had come by the hundreds of thousands, escaping the harsh realities of the hacienda system and later the Mexican Revolution, scratching out a modest living farming the vast expanses of the American Southwest. Cesar Chavez was born into such a family in 1927.The Great Depression and the pressures of the Dust Bowl changed all that. Forced off their family farms, they became migrant workers, as growers realized the advantage of hiring displaced Mexican immigrants, driving down wages and breaking strikes - "a slave-like labor force" prized for its reputed docility.

Abuses were endemic to such an exploitative system. A report from the National Labor Board in 19 34 stated, "We found filth, squalor, and entire absence of sanitation, and a crowding of human beings into totally inadequate tents or crude structures built of boards, weeds, and anything that was found at hand to give a pitiful semblance of a home at its worse. Words cannot describe some of the conditions we saw."

''He is a fellow easy to handle and very quiet in his living, a man who lends himself very well to ranch labor, a man who gives us no trouble at all. He takes his orders and follows them. We protect our formers here in Kern County but the Mexicans are trash. They have no standard of living. We herd them like pigs."

Tm glad I hadn't eaten first. I would have vomited. "

The organized struggle in the field After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese workers were pulled out of the fields and hustled into concentration camps. Pressed by the growers, Congress established a program by which seasonal workers- braceros-were imported to work the fields and return to Mexico, putting further pressure on the hundreds of thousands of migrant workers already in the United States Against the law, many of these braceros were used as strikebreakers when Mexican migrant workers protested working and living conditions that were often subhuman.

After God had finished the rattlesnake, the toad, and the vampire He had some awfal substance left with which he made a strikebreaker. A strikebreaker is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a waterlogged brain And a combination backbone made of jelly and glue. When a strikebreaker comes down a street, men turn their backs And angels weep in heaven and the devil shuts the gates of hell to keep him out. Judas Iscariot was a gentleman compared to the strikebreaker. The modern strikebreaker sells his birthright, his country, His wife, his children and his fellow men For an unfulfilled promise from his employer, trust or corporation. There is nothing lower than a strikebreaker.

Let justice roll down like rivers Hard times forced Cesar's family to move in with his grandmother, Mama Tella, a time he remembers as a secure and happy. She taught Cesar his first catechism and instilled in

him a love of Catholic ritual. The devotion and generosity of his mother shaped his character. This personal training found its broader purpose through a priest who encouraged the young Chavez to read deeply on social justice - the letters of Paul, the encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII. From the life of Gandhi, Chavez learned Satyagraha, or the

-, truth-force, which would become the chief weapon of his leadership of the United Farm Workers as it

sought justice for the migrant workers. The marches and the fasts were all outward expressions of his inner conviction.

The following duties bind the wealthy owner and the employer: not to look upon their work people as their bondsmen, but to respect in every man his dignity as a person ennobled by Christian character. His great and principal duty is to give every one what is just. To exercise pressure upon the indigent for the sake of gain, and to gather one's profit out of the need of another, is condemned by all laws, human and divine.

- Pope Leo XIII, "Rerum Novarum 115"

I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness, is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally nonviolent struggle for justice. To be a man is to suffer for others. God help us to be men!
