ThreeStepProcess:

• Examinedthe2011SurveyofCareersServiceProfessionals toidentify themostrelevantquestions.Somequestions weredeletedpermanentlywhileothersmightreappearinthenextiteration.

• Updatedthecontenttoreflectcontemporaryconditions (i.e.economicconditions; changesinthefieldandtherespectivesectors;andnewtechnology) andcurrentCERICprogramrealities.

• Draftquestionnaire circulatedtoCERICBoardandCommitteeMembersforfeedback.

FinalQuestionnaire: 45questions acrossfoursections

• DemographicInformation (15Questions)• CERICandtheProfession (11Questions)• Professional DevelopmentandCompetency Improvement(15Questions)• ResearchandLearningDissemination (4Questions)

Surveyroll-outandmanagement: Theon-line platformwasdeployedonOctober19acrossCERIClists.Thesurveywasalsodisseminatedbyoursupporting organizations.Aggregateresponsesweremonitored throughouttheprocess todetectanystatisticalanomaliesthat mightcontradictdistribution expectations(i.e.bygender,location,field and/orsectors).Several“survey pushes”wereinitiated to ensurearepresentativecohort.ThesurveyclosedonNovember20.

Whatwecansayaboutthefindings:Thesurveywascompletedby1,004careerserviceprofessionals. CERICexaminedthedemographicinformationtoassesstherepresentativenessofthesample.Itisouropinion thatthebreakdownfairlyrepresentsthecomposition ofthefieldanditsrespectivesectors.Asaconsequence, weareconfident thatthefindings provideareliablesnapshot ofthecareer serviceprofessional community inCanada.

Knowledgedisseminationplan:Highlightsofthefindings wererevealedinJanuary, 2016atCannexus16.AHighlightsReportwasmadeavailableatthattime.

161respondentsstatedthattheprofileorperceptionofthevalueofcareerserviceprofessionalshasimproved inthepastfewyears.Hereareafewnotablefactorsthatarebelievedtohaveencouragedthischange:

1. Morepeoplearehavingtochangetheircareerplansandneedinformationaswellasguidanceastheworldbecomesmorecomplex.

2. Theeconomyhasmadeemployment/lackofemployment afront-pagestory,ashastheincessantdiscussionaboutthedisconnectbetweenemployersandtheperceivedlackofskills.Thishasfueledmoreinterestinthemediatotalkabout solutions,andcareerserviceprofessionalsareonepartofthesolution.

3. Ithinkeverysatisfiedcustomercontributestochangingtheperceptionofthevalueofourwork.

4. Iseeuniversitiesandcollegesrampingupcareerdevelopmentservicesforstudents andgraduates.Evenjuniorandseniorhighschoolsarenowgettingintotheseservices.

31respondentsstatedthattheprofileorperceptionofthevalueofcareerserviceprofessionalshasworsened inthepastfewyears.Hereareafewnotablefactorsthatarebelievedtohaveencouragedthischange:

1. Itthinkthatthevaluehasdiminishedduetoshrinkingfederalandprovinciallabourmarketbudgets.Ithinkthatcareerdevelopmentprofessionalshavenotbeenabletoproperlyarticulatetheirvaluetoindividualsandgovernments.Careermanagementisrespectedbybusinessbutcareerpractitionershavenotbeenlinkedtothepractice.

2. Mostlybecausemanyinthefieldarenotequippedtoofferprofessionaladvicebecausetheyarenotfullyknowledgeable.Thecareerservicesfieldhasbeendilutedbythosewhodon’thaveanacademicbackgroundinthesector.

3. IthinkwithtechnologyandGooglethepublicbelievesitcanteachitself.Alargeshareofthepopulation don’tunderstandthatweprovideservicesthatgobeyondwhattheycanget(fromtechnology).
