Rationale for industry/education link (1f)

Focus on moving students from their maximum level of potential to greatest possible performance

Working towards excellence produces new levels of the accepted norm taking students to a whole new level of expectation and achievement

Students must be exposed to the real world to learn the principles and practices of the field of D&T

This is difficult to achieve within a simulated environmentlike a classroom.

Working with Macklow

Last year Macklow Engineering Ltd visited Langley Senior School to discuss ways in which they could diversify their product portfolio. They had heard great things about the department via other companies, local media and parents and were interested in creating a design competition or making some of the students work. Langley reciprocated by visiting the factory in Salhouse to understand their design and manufacturing capabilities.

After the visits, Langley School and Macklow looked at ways in which both companies could benefit from a partnership.

Curriculum Benefits (1a)

New knowledge and access to resources in sheet metal fabrication including stainless steel sculpture.

Curriculum is strengthened through industrial visits by KS2 students who are design and manufacturing a steam boat.

Sponsorship – Macklow purchased new casting facilities for the Prep School.

Students work with representatives of the community – Filby in Bloom Committee.

Macklow increases business opportunities by having an example of an product on display in a village.

By working a team the cost of the product is greatly reduced

Sustainable - product is made from recycled aluminium cans and stainless steel off-cuts.

Business problem solved (2a) GS&SD

Macklow – transformation from designing in 2D to 3D.

Assessing manufacturing capability to produce mix batch products – test and trial parts designed by Langley School and Macklow and looking at investing in the future.

More efficient use of design information.

Mr Daly spent ½ day demonstrating Solidworks a 3D CAD Package to Richard Matthewman (designer at Macklow) for designing, testing and evaluating products.

Staff could not use CAD information and directly input it into their CAM facilities. Training was required to enable this to be achieved which was delivered by Mr Daly to the workshop supervisor- Aide and Steve the fabricator.

Macklow have now employed a Full-time CAD expert (Gary Dains) which Mr Daly is working closely with.

Macklow and Langley can now share design information easily and get products to manufacture more quickly.

Macklow can now integrate more easily with other design based companies like – Product Resolutions, Hethel Engineering etc.

The workshop supervisor and a member of staff were shown by Steve Daly how to transfer CAD file data from their existing CAD software and Langley’s into DXF. File format and plasma cut parts out. This procedure saved 20% of the time required to process parts for plasma cutting increasing workshop productivity.
