The combination of extensive golf knowledge, great contacts, innova-tive course management, and a

sincere passion for the traditions of the game have lifted Southern Golf Proper-ties to a leading role as one of the top golf management companies in Texas and the Southwest.

The Kerrville-based organization now

operates fi ve courses with tens of thou-sands of rounds of golf played each year and just as many satisfi ed customers.

Southern Golf Properties layouts are varied in size, popularity, challenge and clientele, but all share the same outstand-ing operations, agronomy, sales, market-ing, food and beverage services honed by years of experience.

Richard Russell and John Junker discuss agronomy at Alsatian Golf Club.

All offer membership in the exclu-sive Preferred Players Club with special privileges and access for members.

Their mission of making life easier and more productive for course owners has never been more attractive in today’s challenging golf industry. Working with fi nancial institutions, municipalities and private ownership has contributed to the wide array of successful experiences of Southern Golf Properties group.

Southern Golf Properties courses include the headquarters at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, which they own and operate. Other courses oper-ated under a management contract in-clude Alsatian Golf Club in Castroville, Utopia Golf Club in Utopia, The Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch in San Antonio and Casa Blanca in Laredo.

Southern Golf Properties is the by-product of the golf expertise of longtime South Texas golf management expert John Junker along with Texas golf pro and Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Bryan Gathright and Riverhill General Manager Matt Fawkes.

“We were one of their fi rst clients fi ve years ago. It’s been a great comfort,” said Utopia’s Robert Sullivan. “They came along with the knowledge and the contacts and that’s what I needed. It’s

made life so much easier for us.”Junker said the team effort em-

ployed by Southern Golf Properties has allowed the company to prosper, grow and be ready for more golfi ng opportu-nities.

“We know that good people are crucial to our industry and we feel very fortunate to have key team members like Matt Trevino, Kevin Bartholomew, Justin Epp, Jeff Bober and Rudy Gonzalez who all possess the skills necessary to make Southern Golf Properties the best it can be,” he said.

Together Junker, Gathright and Fawkes have more than 70 years of golf experience, working at bringing clubs to their full potential. Junker has taken under-performing clubs to new heights of prosperity in his long tenure. Gath-right has used his teaching ability to win PGA of America honors and guide PGA Tour players. Fawkes, who specializes in club relations and food & beverage, has managed at such noted clubs as the Snake River Sporting Club in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The company has national accounts for all types of golf equipment and mate-rial, using the power of bulk purchases that are then distributed to the vari-ous SGP clubs. If there is a need at an individual club, SGP can help fulfi ll and meet their needs.

Gathright, who learned from golf teaching legend Harvey Penick, said he uses the same teaching techniques that earned him Golf Magazine Top 100 sta-tus to train other Southern Golf Proper-ties teachers.

Golfers who come to any of the SGP facilities are assumed of the same high standards of customer service and effi ciency along with Gathright’s trusted teaching principles

RIVERHILL’S RESTORED GLORYThe historic and scenic Byron Nelson

and Joe Finger par-72 layout and majestic three-story Gus Shreiner Mansion, built in 1901, and clubhouse, have been restored to its former glory.

The fi nal place where Nelson ever played golf and where he lived part-time, has been restored with new tee boxes and improved sight lines along with recently switching the nine holes routing.

But the Nelson infl uence is still strongly felt with his original locker still memorialized with his clubs, hat and other personal items. His portrait graces the Joe Finger’s Turning Point restaurant

and there are Nelson and Finger remem-brances near the fi rst tee.

Longtime Riverhill members have also seen the transformation of their course with the Southern Golf Properties expert touch.

“Southern Golf Properties has shown me their commitment, respect and passion for Riverhill. It is that integrity that provides us with a club we are truly proud to call “home,” said Anne Hearn.

Riverhill is also the home of the Bryan Gathright School of Golf. “We view Riverhill as a fantastic golf facility for great golf, teaching and entertaining,” Gathright said. “We have only begun to expand its true potential.”

“It’s encouraging to constantly fi nd others who appreciate Riverhill Country Club’s different amenities and the South-ern Golf touches,” added general manager Fawkes. “That is why we have added so many new members over the last 18 months.”

CASA BLANCA BORDER BEAUTY Along the Texas/Mexico border,

Southern Golf Properties is doing some of its best work with the Casa Blanca Golf Club in Webb County, Laredo.

The public facility had fallen on tough times over the past several years, suffering from poor course conditions. After two years of Southern Golf Proper-ties partnership, the commitment to a substantial renovation of the citizens of Webb County’s assets has yielded dramat-ic results at a modest investment.

“Southern Golf Properties experience and expertise in operating, renovating and upgrading existing facilities has been in-valuable in our decision making process,” stated Webb County Judge Danny Valdez.

Among the most positive changes have been the installation of a new irrigation

008-011 Southern Golf Propeties.indd 3008-011 Southern Golf Propeties.indd 3 6/1/11 4:13:59 PM6/1/11 4:13:59 PM

system and the increased grassing of the fairways, which used to be bare in a number of spots, and more sand in the bunkers.

ALSATIAN: SOUTH TEXAS SURPRISE

Castroville’s Alsatian golf course has been around for more than a decade, but its total makeover four years ago has made for a more welcoming and friendly layout.

Alsatian is also working on a partner-ship with Southern Golf Properties’, Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch, to take excess play from each other and a pos-sible future membership plan for golfers at either club.

”I think we are really helped by Southern Golf Properties,” said owner Richard Russell. “They know a lot of people in the industry and have really helped us getting experience for various parts of the club.”

UTOPIA GC: PEACEFUL PASTTIME:The scenic 9-hole links of Utopia Golf

Club has received plenty of notice and play from those reading the best-selling book of the same name and soon to be released movie, but those who actually arrive at the course about an hour from San Antonio are always pleasantly surprised.

“We’ve just taken our time getting it ready and getting it right. We have built a waterfall in the middle of the course; we opened the new clubhouse two years ago. We’re always thinking, ‘why won’t we do this or that,’” General Manager Sullivan said.

The course was fi rst opened in 2001, but was purchased by Lou Waters in 2005, who asked his son-in-law Sullivan to help manage it.

GOLF CLUB OF TEXAS: TREVINO TEXAS DESIGN

Dallas native Lee Trevino is one of

the most historic fi gures in the Lone Star State, but one of his few golf architect de-signs lies in San Antonio at the Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch,.

John Junker said the par-72 public-links-style-designed layout is in the midst of continual upgrades that will only make it better for the golfi ng public.

Junker added, “Bar none, the Golf Club of Texas is the best outing and tour-nament course in the San Antonio area. The comfortable pace of play is a great attribute for golfers at Golf Club of Texas. We have a large clubhouse and banquets rooms, which is perfect for tournaments or weddings or just singles, friends and family having green grass good times.”

The same is true for all of Southern Golf Properties complexes. Restoring his-tory from the past, comfort and pleasure for the present, and room to grow for an exciting future, Southern Golf Proper-ties is a powerful golfi ng combination of management experience, passion, service and tradition.

How good is the golf at Cowan Creek Golf Club, the newest championship course at Sun City Texas in George-

town? Plenty good, considering the track features a bevy of challenging holes, multiple options to stoke the mind and fl awless play-ing conditions.

So good, in fact, that players of all skill levels will have a hard time believing Cowan Creek GC was built as a one of the centerpieces of a burgeoning, age-restricted community.

Cowan Creek, which was designed by Gary Stevenson, opened for play in Novem-ber 2008. The course plays at an as-much-as-you-want-and-more 7,050 yards from its back set of fi ve tees and sports rolling, open fairways and numerous water haz-ards – including Cowan Creek, which runs throughout much of the golf course – in a true resort-course atmosphere.

With large landing areas and gener-ous and deceptively tricky putting surfaces, Cowan Creek requires good ball-striking and course management. The entrance to nearly every green is open, offering players the option to use the ground rather than the air, a boost for older or less skilled players that have trouble fl ying their shots into hole locations. Sprigged with the heat- and cold-tolerant Mini-Verde, Cowan Creek’s putting surfaces immediately ran smooth and fast.

Around the green, players can rely on their skills and either pitch, chip or putt the ball from off the short grass.

The course is lined with classic Texas Hill Country terrain, including cactus, mes-quite trees and plenty of wildlife. Bunkers are set as both target lines and to defi ne haz-ards and add to Cowan Creek GC’s diffi culty.

To make things fun and challenging,

Cowan Creek does offer some blind shots (two holes even have an electronic Tee Sentry to let players know when it is safe to hit), elevated greens and tee boxes as well as a couple of great risk-reward options.

Things start off with a bang at Cowan Creek, as the course’s fi rst hole – a dogleg-left 403-yard par-4 – is one of the track’s toughest. The drive here must cross the creek, one of the few holes where a forced carry is required.

The 484-yard par-4 sixth is considered one of the toughest two-shot holes in the Central Texas area. Playing uphill and into the predominate winds, the hole is a bear and par on the hole is like a birdie on most others.

Making the right choice is especially important on hole Nos. 12 and 14. The 12th is a 515-yard par-5 that plays over a large waste area and can be shortened by a drive that moves right to left and challenges the danger. The green drops off on all sides to a creek and tough recovery areas, making a precise approach paramount.

On the 387-yard par-4 14th players can try to carry the natural area and pond pro-tecting the green or take the safer approach down the left where a bunker guards the left side of the fairway. The green is tiny and plays back to front toward the water.

Many players consider Cowan Creek GC to be the best of the three courses at Sun City – the others are Legacy Hills and White Wing. Cowan Creek has a 9000-square foot putting green, and a large practice area that includes a wide driving range and chipping, pitching and bunker practice areas.

The course’s pristine new clubhouse is a gathering place for the community and a gleaming example of all that is great about living at Sun City Texas.

Plum Creek Golf Course - just south of Austin - is located on more that 200 acres of beautiful Texas

Hill Country terrain. This Roy Bechtol-designed course features 18 holes of championship golf that take advantage of the acreage. Not the usual back-and-forth layout, Plum Creek was designed where no two fairways touch – a feature that exudes the wonderful peace some golf courses lack.

With Foresight Golf recently being named as the management team for Plum Creek, golfers can anticipate and trust the kind of service and quality of golf condi-tions that await them! A company well respected in the golf community for pro-ducing golfer-friendly courses and atten-

tion to customer service, Foresight Golf is already setting their sites on how to make the course more playable and fun.

Plum Creek is located just off I-35 in Kyle – a little country drive for those in and around Austin. For tee times, call the pro shop at 512- 262-5555, or book online at www.plumcreekgolf.com.

As a true marketing pitch, it can be hard to sum up the spectacular Four Seasons Resort and Arnold Palmer signature golf course in this most scenic spot of this most scenic country.

You could go with Golf in the Rainforest, Taming the Forest, Links on the Bay. Perfec-tion in Paradise. All different, all correct, all enchanting.

That’s the problem, there’s hardly the right phrase for describing this situation, in the 2,300 acre coastal development. It’s three hours west of the Costa Rican capital city, San Jose, and less than an hour from the newly expanded Liberia International Airport, which brings commercial jets from all over North America.

Just about the time you have it fi gured out, this huge, natural, but growing devel-opment has something else to surprise and delight the traveling golfer.

Thanks to two golf experts, architect Ar-nold Palmer and the lavish Four Seasons hotel chain, golf in the rainforest, technically the Four Seasons Arnold Palmer Signature Course at Peninsula Papagayo, has become a reality.

One of the newer courses in the coun-try, certainly the most lavish, is the Palmer-

designed Four Seasons Golf Club. One of nine full 18-hole courses in this Central American Country, it continues to expand the travel-ing golfers motto, always looking for the next frontier to conquer. The next destination, the new dramatic location, the next unchartered territory.

Golf, meet Costa Rica. The home of Pura Vida, aka Pure Life, and some of the purest golf and luxury lodgings anywhere.

Eventually, this development on the Pacifi c coast of Costa Rica is scheduled to grow to three golf courses, including one by Jack Nicklaus, and two more luxury hotels, but it will hard to better the original Palmer-Four Seasons combo.

The par-72 Palmer course, which mea-sures 6,953 yards from the back tees, is not totally enclosed in a rainforest. There are views of the Papagayo Bay from most of the holes, es-pecially on the back nine. Yet, because courses are not allowed on the oceanfront in Costa Rica, it feels like playing in a forest with thick, lush vegetation surrounding most of the holes and large tangled tree limbs overshadowing many of the cart paths.

It didn’t take long for Palmer, who had

Golfi ng in a Rainforest

designed courses all over the world, to realize he had something special in Costa Rica.

“We were given an excellent piece of property, a lush, tropical landscape, exciting elevation change and 360-degree Ocean views on many holes,” he said. “The course is not only beautiful, but a fair test of golf.

“I gave the course two distinct characteris-tics. It either plays through tropical vegetation in the lowlands or through the uplands where its plateaus afford golfers unlimited views of Papagayo Bay.”

While the Palmer layout may lack much of the sheer drama of an Oceanside course, its beauty and challenge can’t be overstated.

Among the most dramatic holes is the par 4 sixth hole, named El Bajo, which drops 200 feet downhill from the tee box to the fairway with the green sitting on a cliff alongside the ocean.

The par 4 third hole features Arnie’s Tree, a huge cypress in the middle of the fairway which he refused to allow to be cut down in construction and now golfers must choose which side to attack to position their second shots for the green.

The par 3 fi fth hole has a huge lake to the right of the green and nearly 200 yards from the tee.

The back nine is more open and offers more views of the water including the par 3 17th titled Pacifi co and the par 5 18th where players have to confront two massive lakes and a large green which fi nished near the distinc-tive clubhouse.

The massive, circular clubhouse was designed by local architect Ronald Zurcher

in the shape of a conch shell, and is one of the most unique in North America, especial-ly when it’s lit up at night. It features a full pro shop, meeting and eating rooms, including an acclaimed steakhouse, and practice facilities.

Another unique feature of the Penin-sula Papagayo course is the fact it’s crawling

with wildlife, led by the ever-present Holler Monkey. How many golf courses do you know which actually conduct wildlife and nature tours for non golfers? It’s a daily and highly popular item here at the Palmer-designed Four Seasons Golf Club.

Of course, after golf there is the fabulous Four Seasons resort itself, located a mile away.

Zurcher’s dramatic architectural style is evident in the multi-story main building and the dozens of private, individual cottages which make up much of the facilities, giving you a chance to have your own upscale tree house in the Costa Rican sky.

There are all manner of restaurants, an outdoor terrace for drinks

and snacks, a natural, indigenous spa and two beaches, one for sport craft and the other just for lounging.

Even a large swimming pool, with loung-es to catch the Costa Rican sun and a kids club, beach guide and magazines and books to fi ll your day at the pool, beach or course.

Choices don’t usually get this tough. There are direct fl ights from Dallas and

Houston to Miami and Miami toLiberia and a 10-12 month perfect golfi ng

season. With golf there is always one more

destination, one more layout, one more new territory to see, but when you get to the Four Seasons Costa Rica and the Palmer course, stop and stay for a while. It’s Pura Vida, of the golfi ng form, in the highest order.

T he La Loma Grande Course, originally developed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast, was built by the soldiers them-selves in the early 1930s. It is the only military golf course

to host a PGA Tour event; two Texas Opens that were won by Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer and Gene Littler. Now it has been returned to the dream of Tillinghast’s original design. La Loma Grande has always been the fl atter of the two lay-outs, but most regular players also consider it the more diffi cult course with its pushed-up greens, particularly on the back nine, and its diabolical bunkering and mounding around the greens.

The land east of Austin is little more than open prairies and the occasional rolling hill and would seem the last place in the area

where golfers would fi nd one of the Central Texas region’s most playable and fun courses.

But on Decker Lane, about two miles south of Hwy 290 before it heads into Manor and virtu-ally hidden from site except for an inauspicious small sign and a quick view of one of its toughest holes, is the Bluebonnet Hill Golf Course, a dia-mond of a track that you will enjoy playing and wonder afterward why you never played before.

Built on one of the area’s highest vistas and sporting a stunning view of Lake Walter E. Long (formerly Decker Lake) to the east and downtown Austin to the west, Bluebonnet Hill is a complete golfi ng facility with an 18-hole course, a large practice facility with a picturesque driving range and chipping, sand trap and putting areas as well as a pro shop and a snack bar.

Bluebonnet Hill is a no-frills course, but after you have played the track, you will know the secret of its success – the greens are the best and truest rolling surfaces in the area, at any price.

“We know where our bread is buttered, and we work very hard to make sure our greens and fairways are the best they can possibly be at all times,” said Dylan Lemke, Bluebonnet Hill’s general manager and head golf professional. “Our course offers an experience comparable to most of the area’s higher-priced courses, and we take a lot of pride in making sure everybody who plays here wants to come back and play again.”

Bluebonnet Hill was designed by Jeffrey D. Brauer with help from Horseshoe Bay resident Buster Craegh – one of the course’s ownership group – and has seen a bevy of improvements and increased attention to care and condition in the years since it opened for play in 1991.

The track plays to just 6,590 yards from the back set of three tees, but don’t think you can just

grip and rip it to score at Bluebonnet Hill. Four-teen of the holes run north and south, meaning that you are the mercy of the winds that can batter the exposed routing. During the summer, with winds predominantly from the south, most of the course’s hardest holes – including the much-feared 195-yard par-3 17th – play into the wind.

The round at Bluebonnet Hill begins with a 536-yard par-5 that is one of the four holes that play on an east-west direction. Hit it hard but keep it in the fairway as there is out of bounds on the left and trouble on the right. Big hitters can try for the large green in two, but shots short will fi nd a col-lection area without a fl at lie and a hard, low shot to the green may not stay on the putting surface.

No. 9 sends you back to the clubhouse with a 547-yard par-5 test that again has you at the mercy of the breezes. Your tee shot should avoid the left side and an elevated ridge cuts diagonally across the fairway at about 150 yards, making your third shot seem even further uphill that it looks. Again take an extra club because the put-ting surface is huge and the green is challenging.

The daunting 195-yard 17th, Bluebonnet Hill’s signature hole, is all carry over a small lake from tee to green and is one of the hardest putting surfaces on the course to hold and putt. If you are long, there are mounds to catch your ball and you are left with a tough, downhill chip shot with the water looming. This hole, which can vary up to 30 yards either way depending on the direction and strength of the wind, can make or break your round at Bluebonnet Hill.

Bluebonnet Hill offers players of all skill levels a challenging and enjoyable round on the links. Keep this in mind as well: at Bluebonnet Hill, speed of play is a main emphasis ensuring a pleasurable round of golf for everybody. You’re al-most guaranteed a steady pace of play lasting just around four hours, and fi vesomes are not allowed on the course.

At just shy of 11 years old, Olympia Hills Golf and Conference Center has be-

come an area favorite not just for the outstanding golf course, but for special events as well. Olym-pia Hills is situated just outside San Antonio in the hills of Univer-sal City. It was designed and built in 1999 and opened in 2000.

For the golf enthusiast, this stretch of 18 holes is as memo-rable as any in the state of Texas. With its unique combination of creeks, natural topography and vegetation, Olympia Hills offers the perfect setting for the ultimate golf experience. After

you have spent a day on the course, take advantage of the picturesque view from our clubhouse on the bluff overlook-ing this spectacular course. The course accommodates for every level of golfer,

and the par-5 sixth hole is the longest, stretching 575 yards. The course features dramatic elevation changes on holes number 8 and 11, dropping 50 feet or more. The greens are subtly contoured and putt fast and true with Flora Dwarf Bermuda, an improved hybrid with a tolerance for lower mow-ing height than standard Bermuda. The tees and fairways feature 419 Tifway Bermuda grass. The course is equipped with practice facili-

ties. A full-length driving range with elevated tee and sculpted target greens is offered. And when the golfer wishes to perfect particular strokes, a short game area complete with 10,000 square foot putting green, chipping area and practice sand bunker are available.

One of the more interesting stretches of the course are holes 6, 7, and 8. With that in mind, the General Manager, Jason Wiedeman, has decided to hold a contest to name that area. “We want to gener-ate interest and input from the public. Augusta has Amen Corner, PGA National has the Bear Trap, so here at Olympia Hills, we have _____________.” Details for naming the stretch of holes have not been released yet, but it appears that it will be a contest open to the public. More information will be available at www.olympiahillsgolf.com and at www.centraltexas.golfersguide.com

Olympia Hills also has a great fol-lowing in the special events area. Com-bine your golf outing with a business or group outing at our state-of-the-art

O ak tree-lined fairways and the Live Oak Creek meandering through this beautiful Hill Country layout make Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course a

Central Texas favorite. You can’t go wrong with the reasonable green fees offered by Lady Bird, but don’t be fooled by the low rates – the 6,400-yard championship course is consistently in great shape and the friendly staff is always extremely helpful.

A newly built 10,000-sq-ft. clubhouse has a fully-stocked golf shop, restaurant and a great meeting room for your corporate out-ings or tournaments. Practice facilities include a driving range and two practice greens.

There are lots of very good golf courses in The Hill Country, so what makes Lady Bird special? It’s the people, the staff; the attitude of the folks that work at Lady Bird is positive and upbeat. They treat you like a customer and a welcomed guest. No matter where you go around the com-plex it’s the same. The people in the well-provisioned pro shop, the head golf pro, the folks in the Red Bird Grille, even out on the course, it seems like everyone who works at “the Bird” has one thing in mind, make the golfi ng experience as great as they can.

Great fairways and challenging greens will keep your game in top shape.

Already the Lone Star state’s premier loca-tion for an authentic, old school Texas cowboy experience, the Flying L Guest

Ranch is upping the ante every Saturday night this summer. The ranch, which fea-tures an 18-hole championship course, daily entertainment, a water park and various other western-themed outdoor activities for the entire family, has added a Saturday Night Chuck Wagon Dinner and Show experience.

Held each Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. the Chuck Wagon experience features a Texas-style Bar-B-Q dinner complete with Cowboy coffee and biscuits baked in an authentic Dutch Oven. The entertain-ment includes roping lessons, hat and pistol branding, archery, Old Tyme Photos, a Cow-boy stage show and line dancing. All this is provided for $25 per person or is included with a visitor’s meal package.

The Chuck Wagon Dinner and Show is just another way the Flying L Guest Ranch entertains modern-day visitors seeking a taste of old Texas style entertainment. Rat-tling off the list of activities alone will leave you breathless, and that’s even before you’ve saddled up, teed off or gone underwater. Overnight visitors to the resort are treated to a full southwestern breakfast and dinner buffet each day of their stay.

What awaits at Flying L is a true adven-ture that includes summertime entry into the resort’s water park, horseback riding, golf on the championship course, the previously mentioned nightly entertainment and vari-ous activities for kids that includes wagon rides around the 550-acre ranch, Creekside picnics with all the fi xins’, basketball, tennis and swimming.

“No other resort in America has all of the amenities that we have at one place,” said Jeff Hoard, the Flying L’s director of golf.

Given that, the Flying L Guest Ranch has also become a popular location for Vaca-tion Ownership packages that allow visitors to experience the resort time and time again. The vacation ranch program offers either spacious two-bedroom villas or cozy one-bedroom options, both of which come with access to the waterpark, discounts on golf and horseback riding and priority scheduling of other ranch activities.

Whether an owner or a visitor, the Flying L staff is known for its great attitude, attention to detail and accommodating spirit. In addition, the resort has a proven track record of hosting golf tournaments and corporate team-building activities.

One of the Texas Hill Country’s newest golf courses is quickly becoming one of its most popular as Vaaler Creek Golf

Club continues to earn a reputation as one of the region’s best conditioned and most chal-lenging layouts.

Nestled in the heart of the grow-ing Rockin’ J Ranch development located midway between Austin and San Antonio in Blanco, Vaaler Creek opened in July 2009 and since has attracted a large membership base in addition to its bustling daily fee play.

“A lot of that is because it’s a great layout and a very challenging golf course,” said Adam Grosch, head golf professional at Vaaler Creek. “Along with that we have phenomenal course conditions on a consistent basis.”

In addition to its daily fee play, Vaaler Creek has a growing and active membership base. Combined with residents of the Rockin’ J. Ranch, which only has about 200 home sites left out of an original 1,800, member-ship opportunities are open to the public. The initiation fee is $12,900, up from $9,900 last year, a clear sign that membership de-mand for the golf course is quite high.

Along with the Michael Lowry and JR Newman-designed course, the facility features a full practice area, an historic club-house set in the shadow of the 18th green

that includes a 5,500-square-foot deck that is perfect for parties or tournament outings and a new junior Olympic-sized pool that opened just last August.

Given all that, it truly is the golf course that has made Vaaler Creek such a popular destination in such a short period of time. A true Texas Hill Country course, the layout meanders through natural Texas terrain, features thou-sands of live oaks and of-fers bun-kers and water hazards to be navigated. That said, this layout is anything but easy.

The bunkers that are on the course are large and strategically placed and the greens are among the most undulating and chal-lenging in the Hill Country. At only 6,860 yards from the tips, the length at Vaaler Creek is not likely to overwhelm, but place-ment off the tee and on the approach shots are pivotal.

“The greens are really the course’s pri-mary defense,” Grosch said. “There is lot of undulations on these greens and they really make for a fun round of golf.”

Just one of many reasons Vaaler Creek is in such demand as a Hill Country golf favorite. It’s a distinction that as the course matures will only continue to grow.

The Max A. Mandel Golf Course occupies a 270-acre dream site along the Rio Grande. World-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. has brought

his celebrated design team’s genius to transform a landscape that features two deep arroyos, a rich variety of mesquite trees and river vega fl ora into a spectacular 18-hole layout that will captivate and attract golfers from not only Texas and Mexico, but also outside the region. Seven of the holes on the course have been shaped with several holes incorporating memorable vistas of the majestic Rio Grande, such as the par-3 15th whose green is perched some 60 feet above the river.

Jones says of the new course: “The Max A. Mandel Golf Course is a celebration anew of the great game of golf and its cherished roots as a game of the people. The City of Laredo has graciously provided us with the latitude to let our imagi-nation roam free across a rare piece of land that exuded the rugged essence of this storied region. For the one-time capi-tal of the Republic of the Rio Grande, we have created a golf experience that we hope will be a source of great pride and satisfaction for the public. We believe the City of Laredo’s inaugural public golf course is destined to be regarded as one of the best public golf courses in Texas.”

Robert Trent Jones Jr., who has designed 273 courses in some 44 countries on six continents, credits four previous Texas courses in the fi rm’s portfolio. The esteemed archi-tect’s reputation for honoring the cultural, geographical and historical aspects of each project coupled with a sensitive respect for the environment lends an invaluable luster to the City of Laredo’s impressive undertaking to deliver an unmatched golf experience in Texas.

“The City of Laredo is proud of the progress that is be-ing made on this very special golf course that will rate as one of the very best public access facilities in the state of Texas,” said Horacio De Leon Jr., Assistant City Manager and project manager for the golf course. “We are on schedule and on budget for what will prove to be a world-class golf course.”

The City expects the Max A. Mandel Mu-nicipal Golf Course to put Laredo on the map as a golf destination for tourists and the business community. Hopefully, this will be the start for several more courses, which ultimately would position Laredo as the next great golf mecca. We expect that this course will appeal to experienced golfers throughout the world, as well as sparking an interest with youth and aspiring new golfers in our community, thus generating more excitement for this wonderful sport.”

The golf course is named in honor of one of Laredo’s most prominent and highly respected citizens. The late Max A. Mandel was a successful bank executive whose 45 years of service to the community is legendary. His vision helped put the City of Laredo on a strong economic founda-tion. The course sits on Mandel’s farm, named Las Islitas (Spanish for “little islands”), and the Mandel family generous-ly donated a total 390 acres of land, $1 million for the construction project and water rights for irrigation purposes to the City of Laredo to commemorate Max’s philanthropic spirit and civic legacy.

The challenging par-72 course will cater to golfers of all abil-ity levels, with fi ve sets of tees available and yardages ranging from

7,069 from the back tees to 4,897 for the forward tees.

A provision has been made for com-petitive tournament tees to be extended to 7,297 yards,

and a dedicated “juniors” teeing area on each hole is incorporated to increase enjoyment for family play.

Key community and third party part-ners who are closely involved with the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course include: the Mandel Family, land donation and benefactor; Foresight Golf, the lease opera-tor; Landscapes Unlimited, the construc-tion fi rm; and architectural fi rm RTJ II.

There is a certain passion and dedication that comes along with being an avid golfer. It’s a commitment that often can be demonstrated in a myriad of ways, but ultimately it comes down to a desire to play the game and a willingness to do so with great effort.

For some, it’s fi nding the perfect public course and playing as often as possible. For others, it’s joining the ideal golf club surrounding themselves with others that share the same pursuit and passion. Whatever it is that drives you to play the game Gantz Management Group and its Houston-area facilities will fi t the bill without question.

Providing quality public and private golf experiences for all level of golfers, Texas National Golf Club and Country Place Golf Club are re-energizing golf in Southeast Texas through a commitment to affordable, enjoyable and challenging golf experiences.

Few public courses in the region have the history and the pedigree of Texas National, a challenging layout located just eight miles north of Conroe, TX. At Texas National signifi -cant efforts are underway to improve both soil quality and turf conditions. At Texas National, Gantz Management Group isn’t just satisfi ed with improving the golf course; they are diligently working to returned it to its storied roots and original glory. Situated on 200-plus acres of natural, rolling terrain, Texas Na-tional was crafted by Jack Miller in 1977 and almost immediate-ly took its place among the most respected and enjoyed layouts in the Houston area. Over the years, however, the course, which was home to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame from 1978 to 1987, lost its place among the Houston elite as the area grew and com-petition increased.

“There’s a generation of people that have forgotten about this golf course and another generation of people that have never heard of it,” Gantz said. “But this course has so much his-tory and it’s just absolutely beautiful.”

Without question, that message is fi nding its way out to the Houston market. Golfers are rediscovering what a special golf course and facility Texas National truly is. A challenging golf course to be sure, Texas National features signifi cant elevation

changes that had many calling it the Augusta National of Texas when it opened more than three decades ago. Today, the course is noted for its challenge but also for its playability as it boasts several sets of tees and at 6,800 yards doesn’t leave the medium-length hitter at a disadvantage. In fact, placing the ball around this course is essential (as it is at Au-gusta National) as tall pine trees and undu-lating fairways make accuracy and shot mak-ing far more the premium over brute strength. The front nine is highlighted by the 200-yard par-3 second hole, which features a full carry over water to a small green from an elevated tee box. Choos-ing the right club, hitting it solid and in the right direction illustrates why accuracy is the premium at Texas National.

Similar to the outward nine, the backside is highlighted by a dif-fi cult early hole in the 408-yard par-4 11th. A truly beautiful hole, the 11th features an elevated tee to a fairway that climbs back upward for your second shot over water to a very narrow green. Like most holes, golfers fi nd themselves enjoying the beauty when in fact they should be focusing on the wonderful challenge ahead. That is the mystic of Texas National.

“This can certainly be a tough golf course,” Gantz said. “But it’s also extremely playable. With four sets of tees golfers can choose their spot and enjoy the round of golf.”

Speaking of spots, Texas National’s loca-tion is just eight miles north of the growing area of Conroe. What was once considered too far from “there” is now the ideal location no matter the direction golfers are coming

from. “The percep-tion we had of being out of the way has really gone away,” Gantz said. “With the growth of the Woodlands and all the movement going north towards this area, it’s really not that far out of town anymore.”

Speaking of location, beauty and challenge, Texas Na-tional’s sister course Country Place Golf Club, has all three in ample supply. Once restricted to the residents of Country Place, a 55-and-over retirement com-munity the golf club now offers several types of member-

ships to all golfers. Situated just 15 minutes south of downtown Houston in Pearland, Country Place Golf Club also has opened its doors to the public on a limited basis. Tee times can be booked online on their website. Gantz Management Group is also in the pro-cess of returning Country Place to its original glory. With the focus being on bunker and fairway renovations, and attention to detail, Country Place Golf Club is quickly transform-

ing back into the place to play. You owe it to yourself to come experi-

ence the laid back atmosphere of the country club lifestyle. Play a relaxing round of golf on a challenging but fair golf course that lazily winds through the neighborhood and along Clear Creek. It’s a design that will challenge every level of golfer amid scenery that provides relaxation and comfort. The course is routed through vast, tree-lined fairways and on the back nine meanders around the beautiful Clear Creek. Upon completing your round sit out on the patio and have our excellent grill personnel bring you a beer or soda while you and your friends total up your score. With a full service restaurant, you can’t leave without having one of Country Places famous burgers or wraps to complete your experience. You will soon fi nd out why the membership at Country Place calls it home.

“The perception of Country Place is really changing from a retirement community course to one that is a great place to be a member no matter where you live,” Gantz said. “We have a very vibrant membership here; they are so supportive and friendly. And we offer options for the golfer that wants to play all week or just play on the weekends.”

While both layouts feature their own unique challenges and character-istics, they both benefi t from Gantz Management’s commitment to providing quality service, top con-ditioning and an overall experience that makes the round worth every dollar. In fact, it’s that renewed commitment that is revitalizing both

courses; albeit in different ways.“At Gantz Management Group we believe

that good golf with great service does not have to be expensive,” said Gantz.

That’s not just a motto Gantz uses around his facilities, it’s one he absolutely lives by. Since taking over direction of both courses, improvements both to service and condition-ing have been priorities 1 and 1A.

The end result is two different courses, in two opposite parts of the Houston region providing two unique experiences, yet both of the highest quality and value.

“These are two completely different types of golf courses with two different types of pric-ing and amenities for the golfer,” Gantz said.

To Gantz, the mission around Houston is pretty simple; provide golf course options people want, need and can afford. Prioritize service and provide them a quality facility and golfers will come back.

“We are in the service business! It is important to us that our guests enjoy their experience,”Grant said, “As you play our facilities I believe you will fi nd that we really do care.”

This is the road map at Texas National and Country Place and it’s why so many Hous-ton area golfers are fi nding their way to these uniquely special facilities.

Some golf courses sim-ply provide a place to play the game. Others,

however, offer a home to learn the game, to celebrate it and to pursue other passions in natural confi nes surrounding it. Such is the atmosphere at Blaketree National Golf Club, a hidden gem in Southeast Texas that offers a memorable golf experience but even so much more than that.

Located amid some quietly stunning countryside some 20 minutes from Lake Conroe and about an hour outside Houston, Blaketree National is golf the way it was meant to be. Spread over 325 acres of gorgeous terrain, the layout is as far away from everyday life as one could imagine. There are no homes or hotels, only nature and one challeng-ing golf course crafted by the late Thomas Blake.

The facility, which opened in 2000, has been under new management for several years that has brought a new com-mitment to Blaketree that includes terrifi c

course conditioning, a strong instruction program and multi-day getaway packages

Given its location among nature, Blaketree is now offering an enticing Stay n Play – Hunt, Fish and Golf package that is equal parts affordable and memo-rable. For $300 per person, visitors get a 1-night stay in the beautiful Magnolia Cottage, which features a full kitchen, unlimited golf for two days, hunting from 4 p.m. until dark with a guarantee hog and onsite fi shing in numerous ponds that are fully-stocked with bass.

While that package will entice the equal parts hunter and golfer among us, the golf-crazed player needs nothing but the terrifi c 18 holes that comprise Blaketree National to make the trip out a worthwhile one. Concealed inviting scenery is a formidably challenging golf course. Golfer’s will be tested from any of the fi ve sets of tees and must navigate seven lakes, multiple doglegs in each direction, sloping fairways and tradition-ally slick greens.

Avid golfers in the Houston area yearning for a pure golf experi-ence set apart from the city and

brimming with secluded, natural sur-roundings can fi nd that true, undisturbed feeling at Eagle Pointe Golf Club. The par-71 Rick Forester-design located less than 35 minutes from down-town Houston off I-10 in Mont Belvieu, is equal parts peaceful, eye-catching and playable. The course’s distinguishable charac-teristics are its rolling fairways, stunning-

ly tall pines, dramatic elevation changes and an abundance of water. With no homes on 17 of the 18 holes, golf is what you get at Eagle Pointe. The trademark of Eagle Pointe is its steeply tilted, undulating greens that will challenge even the most expert players. Strategically speaking, it’s important to place your approach shots below the hole at Eagle Pointe because of the quickness of the putting surfaces. Eagle Pointe’s closing stretch is the perfect way to conclude a round of golf.

The 15th is the toughest par 3, with a two-tiered green and menacing bunkers right and left. The long par-4 16th fea-tures multiple water hazards and a small, narrow green. The par-5 17th is the best birdie opportunity over the four-hole stretch if you don’t fi nd yourself in one of the many sand traps guarding the green. Finally, the par-4 fi nishing hole requires not one, but two shots over water to a well-protected green. There are also plenty of activities available at Eagle Pointe to complement

or even improve your on-course play. The newly-designed Player Develop-ment Program at the club is aimed at newcomers to the game of golf or those interested in taking their game to the next level. The facility also offers a state-of-the art fi tness center and an 8,000-square-foot tournament pavilion that would be the perfect place for corporate outings, weddings or charity events this fall.Visit www.eaglepointeonline.com or call (281) 385-6666 for more information.

Whether it’s their fi rst introduction to the game, a renewal of their interest or the fi rst step toward a precision at

it, Timber Creek Golf Club is the Houston-area location for junior golf camps this summer.

Led by Timber Creek Director of In-struction David Pilsner, the popular public course will host a trio of junior-themed summer programs, each with their own specifi c goal, focus and program. That said, the end game for each junior golf clinic is to make learning the game fun while reinforc-ing the fundamentals, etiquette and under-standing of the sport.

“Golf is a hard sport to learn and a hard sport to play, our goal is to make it fun to learn so that it doesn’t feel like they are going to school,” Pilsner said. “We offer mul-tiple programs but we are really just trying to make sure the kids enjoy themselves and want to come back.”

Throughout the summer, Pilsner will be overseeing three programs that are geared toward different levels of players. Two four-day programs and another three-day camp will be offered for young players looking to learn the fundamentals of the game in a fun, easy-going atmosphere. The single-day “Cougar Camp” will be provided in combi-nation with the University of Houston golf program that will be geared toward aspiring collegiate golfers and rising high-school aged juniors looking to improve at the game.

Throughout the summer, Pilsner will run the Timber Creek Junior Academy where juniors get instruction in game

fundamentals, including short-game skills, and then play nine holes each Saturday. That program begins June 13 and runs through Aug. 13.

“We’ve put together three different programs that targets three different types of players at three different levels,” Pilsner said.

Given all the athletic opportunities kids have year-round but defi nitely during the summer, the Timber Creek programs will go a long way toward keeping juniors interest-ed in the game of golf. Understanding that it can be an expensive and intimidating game to become profi cient at, Pilsner is focused on making the process fun, easy going and enjoyable.

“Here in Texas kids want to play football and girls want to play softball and volleyball,” said Pilsner, who is in his third season at Timber Creek and does nothing but instruction. “I’m not trying to say they shouldn’t play those sports, I just want to make sure golf is part of that and that we make such that they want to come back.”

For a complete listing of camps, including dates, times and cost, visit www.timbercreekgolfclub or call David Pilsner at 281 734-0177.

There is a reason that pros make it look so easy… and as a result of that, people interested in playing this game expect it

to be easier than it really is. The way pro-fessionals approach this game IS the reason why they make it look easy. They work harder on their games than any golfers in the world! I am going to break down the professional approach into three simple cat-egories - mental, physical, and equipment.

First, the mental part of golf makes up about 85 to 90 percent of the game in my book. An example that I commonly use to open up peoples minds on how they can start the process to improving their games, is that of a professional’s reaction after a performance… compared to a high handicap golfer sitting in the locker room after their performance. Listening to an interview of a professional from any sport, you will hear them most always refer to the mistakes they made and what they need to improve on. Listening to a mid-high handicapper after their round, the fi rst thing they will want to refer to is the 300 yard drive they hit or the one birdie they made. If a golfer truly wants to im-prove, breaking down the mistakes made throughout a round of golf is the fi rst step to creating a plan of action in this process.

Secondly, the physical approach to golf that professional golfers take is that of constant practice to develop their game. Now unless you have all the time and money in the world, the amount of time that the pros put into their games is unattainable for anyone with a job, who’s

married, or has kids. Golf is a lot like life, in which people are always looking to improve, but are uncomfortable with change. A golfer who wants to get better… but wants an instructor to work with what they have is a common request from stu-dents. Now, I do not believe that a swing coach should ever try to have a student change in a way that their bodies simply will not allow. However it is what students have to work with that is not working for them. Professionals of any sport delegate the analyzing, as well as the direction of their games, to another type of profes-sional… a coach.

The third category towards the professional approach, is equipment. In my teaching career, so many times I have heard people say, “Once I get better, THEN I will get fi tted for some clubs.” Over half the people that come my way for help with their games are playing clubs that do not fi t them. Now for beginners, I would rather develop a consistent golf swing and speed in their swing, before going through a club fi tting for them. But for a mid-high handicapper, eliminating that variable of it being the clubs you are playing with can have a huge impact on your game. There are certainly club induced miss-hits in the game of golf and if you are playing non-fi tted clubs, you will constantly be compensating to make them work

Understanding these concepts and committing to this approach will most defi nitely go a long way in any level of golfer’s plan to improving their game.

How many times have you been told that golf is a game of miss hits? Tour players hit on the average about thirteen to fourteen greens per round in regula-tion. That means that four or fi ve times in a round they have to hit a precise chip or pitch shot to save par. One stroke on the PGA Tour can lead to a difference of $50,000 to $500,000, so to a Tour player not getting up and down to save par is very signifi cant. Now, look at a high-hand-icapped player who may only hit three to fi ve greens per round in regulation. He now has more opportunities to save or lose strokes by the outcome of his short game. For example, let’s say that a player has fourteen pitch or chip situations in his round of golf. By him getting up and down in two strokes rather than three strokes on only half of the occasions, he saves seven strokes per round. That doesn’t take into consideration the amount of times he has a screw up or missed shot that takes more than three shots to get up and down. Those seven strokes allow someone who hasn’t broken 100 before the opportunity to break that score mark and the same goes for someone trying to break 90 and 80. So, developing additional skill on the shots close to the green will signifi cantly be refl ected in lower scores. More importantly is to know when to use certain techniques, as in when to chip the ball or pitch it onto the green.

To help determine when to chip or pitch the ball remember this: putt the ball when you can, chip the ball when you can’t putt it, and pitch the ball only when necessary. It’s always easier to roll the ball than it is to loft the ball in the air. There is

always more room for error when a player has to take a longer swing. The chip tech-nique should be played whenever a player is close to the green but can’t putt the ball due to heavy or uneven grass between the ball and the green whether in the rough or on the fringe. If the grass is heavy or uneven and the player decides to putt the ball, the heavy or uneven grass will cause the ball to bounce and jump off line. So, the best way to approach this situation is to chip the ball onto the green and let it roll towards the hole. Chipping allows the ball to clear any questionable terrain, land on the green, and roll to the hole without interference. The pitch technique is used when a player needs a higher trajectory to reduce the ball’s roll on the green when it lands. This technique is normally required when the cup is cut close to the edge of the green, there is considerable amount of grass, sand, or water to carry before the green, or the green slopes away and a soft-landing shot is desired. Some situations won’t allow players to land the ball on the green fi rst but require players to chip and run or pitch and run the ball up onto the green. This technique is used when plays cannot land the ball on the green and stop it short of the hole due to poor lies, loca-tion of the cup, and slope of the green.

During your next practice session, take the time to practice different situa-tions around the greens. Let’s take a look at photo No. 1. Here I am located just a few feet on the fringe. The fringe terrain is rough so I decided to take out a 6 iron and chip the ball onto the green. Keep in mind that a chip shot is an elongated put-ting stroke with a slightly open stance, and

the majority of my weight is on my left/leading side. I chose the 7 iron to help keep the ball low to the ground which allows the ball to hit and roll. As you can see, my target is only on the green about 2-3 feet. Remember to get the ball on the green as soon as possible and let it roll the rest of the way. This will also allow you to watch how the ball reacts to the slope of the green to help you get an idea of how your next shot will be. In photo No. 2, I am located about 15 yards off the green. The green is elevated and I also have to carry the ball over a portion of rough which leaves me with little green to work with. This situation calls for me to pitch the ball in which I choose to use a 56 deg. wedge to do so. As you can see from the picture, the ball is considerably higher in the air. The higher the ball gets in the air, the softer the ball will land. So, I took my landing spot and moved it much closer to the hole due to having to loft the ball in the air which causes the roll to be reduced. In photo No. 3, you can see that I have plenty of green to work with, nothing to carry, and I’m about fi ve yards off the green. So, I choose to use the chip technique again but I changed club selection to an 8 iron to allow the ball to get in the air just a bit more since there was a little elevation change from earlier when I was on the fringe. Again the idea is to get the ball on the green and let it roll to the hole. In photo No.4, I have a bad lie in the rough which wouldn’t allow me to get the club head under the ball to pitch it in the air, so I choose to go with a chip and run technique. You can see my landing spot is still in the rough. I chose to land the ball short of the green into the slope to help take its forward momentum off the ball.

Learning when to chip and pitch the ball around the greens is one way to considerably lower your scores and help you improve around the green. Remember to survey the terrain and determine where you need to land the ball on the green, and then choose which technique to use. Also remember that a pitch has more air time than ground time and that it fl ies more than it rolls, and the chip has less air time than ground time. Chips are usually fi rmer-wristed elongated putting style strokes while pitches are typically longer swings and have more wrists involved in the stroke. Learning to use each technique effectively will help you lower your scores and beat your weekend buddies with ease.

The Golf Club, Austin’s most trusted source for golf equipment, has moved to a new location at 1315 W. Ben White Blvd. They have an expanded inventory

of the hottest new clubs and the most affordable and best selection of used equipment. Although, they have main-tained the same attention to detail, customer loyalty and fair pricing that has sustained it for many years. Local Austin store owner John Rowsey recently purchased a larger building conveniently located between Manchaca and South 1st on the Southside of Ben White Blvd (or Hwy 290). “With our move, we went from 2,300 to close to 4,000 square feet” Rowsey said of the new store. Rowsey and his staff have enhanced and increased their fi tting programs and commitment to placing clients into equipment that fi ts their swing and their size. “We already have the best service and now we have one of the largest inventories in the area.” At the core of their customer service is the top-notch free custom fi tting that comes with every iron set purchase at The Golf Club. Whether it’s the hottest new putter, driver or iron set on the market, the staff at The Golf Club ensures the equipment is the perfect match for the player. The Golf Club’s pricing is generally less expensive than the “larger” retailers in the country. “We have smaller overhead and lower costs and we are able to pass those sav-ings along to our customers,” Rowsey said. “On new iron sets, we are generally $50 cheaper than the larger stores. Drivers, Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Putters are 10%-15% less than the competition ” Add to that value and service an easy-to-access location in South Austin and one can see why the new location of The Golf Club is getting so much attention. Due to manufacturer’s pricing and internet policies, you will fi nd similar prices on all websites. But, when you visit The Golf Club, due to the lower prices, you receive your discount when you walk in the door. For more information on The Golf Club call 512-453-0102 or to view the store’s website, visit www.teegolfclub.com.
