Developing a Grateful Heart

My devotions today were a reminder to develop a grateful heart. We are to be grateful that God, through the power of the Holy Spirit

helps us experience his love, speaks to us, and desires to work through us in the work he does in the world. When we spend even just a few minutes contemplating all that God is and all that we receive through him, gratefulness should easily flow through our lives. This week it has also led me to see many things around me with a grateful heart, often times it is the way I see God at work in the lives of all of you.

This month especially, Josh and I are grateful that you provide a business administrator for us. He takes so many things off our list demanding our attention each week. We don’t usually have to respond immediately to queries like: have you seen the sink hole in the parking lot, can you check out the smell around the dish machine,

is there any way to get it a little warmer in the building, and so many more. By the time you read this, Dave should be well on the way to recovery and handling these things again soon. And we will still be grateful.

I am so grateful for all the ways people quietly go about using the gifts God gave them to care for the church and care for people all around them. On a Saturday morning you might encounter someone detailing the van, mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes, changing light bulbs, not to be noticed but to use the gifts God gave them.

At other times, you may see someone meeting an electrician in New Berlin, replacing a light sensor, watering a pot of flowers or picking up trash on the grounds. Someone will deliver meals to a friend who is sick or take someone grocery shopping. Others help a child check out a book at the school library, work in the community garden and share the produce with others, and deliver meals to a shelter.

The phone is dialed to encourage a friend, a note is written to someone who is sad and a visit is made to the rehab facility. A check is written to provide Bibles for Nicaragua, In these ways and so many more I am grateful for the ways you live out our mission to Love God Love People and Serve the World.

I conclude this article as I return from being out of the office for a couple of weeks of vacation. And I am grateful for the time I had to invest in my family to do some of the things there is never time to do in an average week.

Children are back in school now and everyone is getting into their old routines now that summer has ended. As you get caught up in the routine, do not lose track of what is important – your primary relationship. Make a commitment to be intentional about your marriage/relationship so that you do not take your partner for granted. Here is an article on Why Couples Can't Coast: An expert warns of the perils of living on autopilot. In the article, Dr. Amodeo states, “Relationships get off track when we take them for granted and neglect to nurture them with “fondness and admiration” (as John Gottman puts it), enjoyable activities, and ongoing communication about what’s working well and what isn’t feeling so good. Finding a balance—a middle path between avoiding issues and overdramatizing them—we can continually nurture the love and intimacy we desire.”

UIS counseling intern Michelle Davidson is back for her final semester and is accepting new clients. Michelle is working on her master’s degree in Human Development Counseling and will see clients free of charge in exchange for the educational experience. Children’s House SEPTEMBER 2015 - PAGE 3

Everyone is settling nicely into their new classrooms. We are all set for a new beginning in the school year. A themed spirit week will be held later this month to help celebrate a new school year here at Children’s House. Each day will be themed and the sights and sounds will fill the halls. School pictures will also be taken this month.

Chapel will begin this month and is always a favorite among the classrooms. Chapel time is held twice monthly in the church sanctuary. Members and staff of Central Baptist Church share bible messages and songs. The children really enjoy the time spent at chapel.

This month we wish Ms. McKenna good luck as she begins a new journey. McKenna has shared her talents with us since 2007. We consider ourselves blessed to have had McKenna apart of our staff for 8 years. She began teaching in the summer program and then four years ago became the full time cook. Thank you McKenna for your years of service as we pray for blessings on your new journey.

Congratulations to Miss Amanda. She is celebrating 12 years of service here at Children’s House. Miss Amanda teaches in the three year old classroom. She provides her students with fun and learning. She loves to get messy with the kids and is always hosting messy and cool science experiments. We are so grateful for Miss Amanda

Wednesday Night Dinners Resume

Weekly dinners will resume beginning Wednesday, September 9th.

Dinner is served in Merriam Hall (Springfield) from 4:45-5:45 p.m.

The cost of the meal is $5.00 for adults and $1.50 for children 10 and under. Please make your reservation for dinner by noon the Tuesday prior by email (tricia@cbcchurchfamily.org) or calling the church office at 523-3639.

Tutus For Bluefields

On August 3rd, several volunteers met in Merriam Hall to make tutus for Carol Matheson’s ballet classes in Bluefields, Nicaragua. You can see their March Recital on YouTube by clicking the link here.

Graham Library VolunteersThroughout the year, Graham Elementary students rely on a team of volunteers to ensure they will be able to check out library books from their school. Members from Central Baptist Church have been critical in this and more volunteers are needed.
