We’ve been talking about doing this for five years. We finally made it happen this year. Thank you to our

many volunteers and all the great kids for two fun nights of Camp Out fun at Central Baptist Church

Dear Friends,

On Palm Sunday, along with the beautiful music and wonderful story of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we had the added joy of witnessing the baptism of Leah Hallamore and all three members of the Burnside family; Steve, Katy and Emma. What a joy to see such faith blossoming before us. Then we were blessed to welcome them into membership along with a lovely couple, Jennifer and Philip Bryan. As a pastor, I am grateful to be part of a congregation that is not only growing in numbers, but also with people who love the Lord.

On Maundy Thursday we shared the story of the Passover meal Jesus shared with his disciples in the Upper Room. Michael Grillo, Steve Contois and the choir gave us some moving musical selections to help us reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross and the meaning of the Lord’s Supper.

On Easter morning we celebrated the resurrection with three different services. The day began with our fifth Community Sunrise service at Misquamicut Beach. It continued with our service at the Avondale Chapel and reached its finale with our celebration here in the church sanctuary. With flowers, music and a little drama we came together to praise God and celebrate his victory. It was a wonderful day.

Thank Yous all around! Thank you to Lynn Dowding, the choir, our children and musicians for the powerful music. Thank you to Brian Gerbutavich and his crew for the great breakfast. Thank you to Jean Smith and her Floral Committee for the wonderful memorial flower display. Thank you to Marie Bertsch and her crew for the fun filled Easter Egg Hunt. Thank you to Cindy in the office for all the prep work that needed to be done. Thank you to Jonathan Gibson and all who participated in our Easter vigil through the night. Thank you to Gary Trebisacci, the Trustees and the clean up crew who came in to help us get ready.

We are blessed here at Central Baptist. Look around you the next time you are at worship and say thank you to God for bringing us together to share the Good News that He lives.

March donations returned to planned levels and expenses were low, so we ended the month with about $2,100 less of a deficit than planned. For the year to date amounts, we have a positive Net Income and, with your generous support and keeping our expenses under control, we may have no deficit at the end of the year! Thank you for continuing to support the ministries of Central Baptist Church as we celebrate this Easter season.

During the month of May the earth comes alive. The early morning is filled with the songs of the birds. The earth is colorful with flowers. Mission Trip to New Orleans July 29 - August 5th

We will be heading to New Orleans to help clean up and rebuild after recent tornados ripped through the area. If you can use a hammer, carry a rake, lift a paintbrush, visit with the elderly or work with animals, there is a place for you on our team. This is part of the ABCUSA "Til the Work is Done Campaign" this summer. One hundred dollar deposit by May 7th insures your spot on the team. Contact the pastor for more information.

We are pleased to announce that the Mission Board has elected to support Pivot Ministries as part of our spending plan. Founded in 1970, Pivot Ministries is a residential treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction located in Bridgeport and Norwalk, CT. Pivot’s mission is to treat drug and alcohol addiction as a spiritual problem and to return the men to their families usefully whole. Pivot Ministries serves approximately 250 men per year throughout the Northeast and beyond and is known as a sanctuary for men in trouble. It is an integrated service delivery system, which includes three phases of living (Crisis, Stabilization and Transitional). The 16-month long men’s residential treatment ministry provides a safe and nurturing environment to apply the love and teaching of Jesus Christ. It is a structured program whereby each participant is expected to follow a rigorous schedule of daily activities which includes: personal counseling, a bible-based curriculum of study, life skills training, educational tutoring, AA meetings and chore duties. Each resident is assigned a pastoral counselor with whom they meet six sessions per month. In addition to guiding the men to develop spiritually, Pivot also holds regular dietary classes led by a nutritionist and consultation with a registered nurse. Regular attendance at the Bridgeport Community YMCA is also part of Pivot programming. Graduating to a new life of successful sober living requires employment. That’s why Pivot Ministries includes a GED component in its program, if needed. The curriculum also allows significant time for vocational training. After being introduced to a variety of industry skills, graduates qualify to live in our re-entry housing as they pursue a degree or establish full time employment. The Pivot Community Development Corporation (CDC) was founded in 2012 to establish small businesses offering the men training and employment in landscaping, horticulture and the building trades. This year our offering theme is “You are here.” By this simple statement, we glorify God’s faithful presence, affirm that Christ is uniquely present in those whom we serve, and celebrate how you are here for your neighbors in their times of need. One Great Hour of Sharing is present for people near and far in moments of crisis and calm because of your partnership and generosity. We have been present, so you also have been present. You are here — in Nicaragua, where women are given the training and tools to cultivate home gardens to provide nutritious food for their families. You are here — in West Virginia, where communities rebuild after flooding claims lives and livelihoods. You are here — in Lebanon, Hungary, Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere around the world, where refugees are receiving food, water, and medicine with dignity, as our partners offer aid and accompaniment. Often we receive notes from those who have experienced disasters, expressing thanks because “One Great Hour of Sharing was here.” In times of loss or struggle, after a fire or flood, and when communities struggle to overcome the chronic absence of water, food, or economic opportunity, the church is present through the work of One Great Hour of Sharing. Prayer Fervent - Priscilla Shirer “A women’s battle plan for serious, specific, and strategic prayer.” The author addresses topics she identifies as affecting women the most: personal identity, family, regrets, temptations, pressures and fears. Shirer guides the reader in developing personalized prayer strategies to meet the challenges faced by women today. “Fervent is a hands-on, knees-down, never-give-up action guide” to purposeful prayer.

Family Life Raising Kids in an Entitled World - Kristen Welch This book is an important “read” for parents seeking guidance in rearing children in a fast-paced, instant gratification culture. The author details how one family approached the task of raising grateful, emotionally strong children in our contemporary culture. Of interest is the author’s use of a “Cell Phone Contract Between Parent & Child” and a “Christian Parent Manifesto.”

THE SHED - St. Pauly Textile Inc. is a Western NY based, family owned for-profit company and an A+ member of the Better Business Bureau. Their goal is to get USEABLE clothing to people who can use it, here in the U.S. and in developing countries, while having a meaningful impact in our local communities. According to the EPA, 85% of clothing in the U.S. is thrown away. This means that only about 15% of clothing that could potentially be re-used is collected using existing methods. There is an enormous global need for used clothing. St. Pauly is able to distribute clothing to organizations and people all over the world who could use it. All of the clothing and textiles that they collect are used by someone

somewhere. St. Pauly can also give clothing locally, if there is a need. Organizations like CBC that host the sheds are free to use clothing from the shed for rummage sales, clothing give-aways, and any other circumstances where it is needed. How this works: Community members drop off clothing at the shed. St. Pauly Textile Inc. purchases the clothing from us. Central Baptist gets to use the money that we receive from St. Pauly in order to support our mission projects. St. Pauly sells and distributes the clothing that they purchase all over the US and World to organizations such as foreign governments, relief organizations, the U.N., private companies and the U.S. government. This is the most cost effective way for these organizations around the globe to get large quantities of clothing for people in communities that they represent. All clothing is sold for pennies on the pound by St. Pauly Textile Inc, in large quantities at a time. All donations should be in plastic bags. The truck makes a collection every week or two based on volume.


VBS Planning Theme and Dates We are so excited to announce that we have selected our program for this summer. It is Maker Fun Factory “Created by God—-built for a purpose” We can’t wait to begin putting together the staff and program for this exciting adventure. Vacation Bible School is tentatively scheduled for June 26—30, 2017. The daily themes will be:

Even though Joanne and Mark Faiola were classmates from junior high on to graduation from Westerly High, they barely knew each other. Decades later both were summoned to federal jury duty in Providence. The case involved Richard Hatch, the first winner of TV's "Survivor" and his failure to pay taxes on his windfall. Neither Joanne nor Mark ultimately served, but the process provided a reintroduction to each other and, subsequently, to their marriage in 2012. Joanne Sposato was born in Manhattan, New York, and, at one year old, moved to Westerly, her dad's hometown. She attended all Westerly schools. Her goal was to become a nurse, but she chose marriage instead, reared three children, always wanting to get more education. At age fifty she did. She enrolled in the New England Technical School and received an associate's degree in surgical technology. Along the way to her return to schooling, Joanne worked at a mushroom farm, in a postal facility, in nursing homes, and in several companies that made medical devices. She gave up her surgical tech job to return to the medical device work and retired from Medtronics. Referring to her days as a Brownie and Girl Scout, Joanne spoke of one of her leaders, Marcia Madson Hayes, as the mentor who opened her eyes and her heart. Marcia was a very active leader who introduced the girls to camping - and then to "primitive camping", to the love of nature, and, through music, even to early stirrings of allegiance to Christ. It was a surprise to me that girls were placed on a waiting list to get into a troop and that it was our own Emma Lloyd who had charge of the applications. Joanne speaks of her desire to "give back" as a plant for which Marcia Hayes provided the seed. Roll-on America, a roller skating rink in Groton (now Galaxy) provided Joanne a lot of fun. She became proficient in figures and dancing. Another interest has been card making - elegant, complicated cards which she learned from Anita Greene's sister Janice. Since joining Needleworkers she has learned to knit from Dot Marra. She attends tai chi classes as a physically therapeutic endeavor. Birds and squirrels get Joanne's and Mark's attention even before their own breakfast as they tend four feeders in winter and seven in summer. They feed squirrels peanuts in the shell and pinecone treats with peanut butter rolled in seeds. There are red squirrels, gray squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and on occasion a fox to delight the Faiolas watching via binoculars and monoculars. They have learned the birds' calls and identifying features... true birders. Joanne grew up in the Catholic tradition. A response to a knock on her door by folks from the Seventh Day Baptist Church loosened that connection. Those recruiters for Vacation Bible School impressed her and she sent her children. Eventually she herself was baptized in that church. There came a period of participation in other churches and not quite a year ago she became a member of Central Baptist. Her admiration for the pastor and the warmth of the congregation impelled her to join. Currently, she teaches Sunday school, is a Needleworker, Friendship Circle member, and a volunteer for collations. She remembers her good relationships with residents of nursing homes where she worked and is considering how she might serve in that way. Joanne's eagerness to serve God breaks through her shy nature - never more tested than her decision to participate in the church's mission trip to Oklahoma last July. As she said to me, "God has always been faithful - has kept my head above water in my deepest struggles."

THE POWER OF A SAVED LIFE John 19:25 - "Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, and His mother's sister,

Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene." (TNIV) With only four weeks separating Easter and Mother's Day this year, it seemed only appropriate to include something about both in this newsletter. I wasn't sure what it should be and then lo and behold I found it in my Power for Life Crystal Cathedral Bible. When I came across a commentary about the role women played in the ministry of Jesus as they followed Him, served Him, devoted themselves to Him. Women are mentioned so many times in so many Bible accounts that one has to take note of their loyalty and faith in Jesus. They stood there at the cross weeping in grief and they were the first to go to the tomb on the first Easter Day to minister to Him in what they thought would be death, and were overjoyed to find instead that He had risen - risen indeed. Their faith through Jesus' lifetime was exemplary and should be an inspiration to all. What follows is the commentary I found.

MARY MAGDALENE: THE POWER OF A SAVED LIFE! One of the most dramatic stories of a saved life is that of Mary Magdalene's! Her encounter with Jesus changed her life forever. Just a brief mention in the book of Luke provides the documentation that Jesus saved her from several infirmities and cast seven demons from her (Luke 8:2-3). One can only speculate on what it meant to be miraculously freed from the evil spirits that were destroying her life. After deliverance, Mary joined a small group of grateful women who had been helped by Jesus and who, at their own expense, served him and his disciples as they ministered and traveled. Without question, she became one of Jesus' most devoted followers.

Along with the other women, Mary traveled with Christ and his disciples on his final trip to Jerusalem. They stood at the foot of the cross, weeping as they watched him die, watching unbelievably as he was wrapped in burial clothes and laid lovingly in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. On the third day, in the early hours of the morning, she went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus with sweet spices. Still reeling with grief, she walked through the morning mists with other women, wondering how they were going to be able to roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb. Suddenly the earth shook with the rumble of one of their typical earthquakes. This time, however, two angels appeared, rolled the stone away, and sat on it, their countenance blinding and fearful, causing the Roman soldiers to tremble and faint dead away. The angels announced to the women who, unlike the soldiers, were still standing, though awestruck, "He is not here! He is alive!"

Perhaps Mary didn't understand them at first, for as she stood looking at the empty tomb, she wept. "Why are you weeping?" the angels asked her. "Because they have taken my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." Then a man, whom Mary mistook for the gardener, asked her the same question: "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" "Sir, if you know where they have laid him, tell me so that I can take him away!"

Then he spoke her name, "Mary." When she heard her name, she recognized him immediately! Imagine the incredible rush of joy that filled her at that moment.

How often do we fail to see the risen Jesus in the chaos of our lives? We cannot see the signs and wonders of the mir-acle of his resurrection even when he stands directly in front of us. We only see what has gone wrong or what we have lost but miss the fact that all of this is part of God's plan to transform our lives. We are unable to see the Devine hand and stand weeping beside the empty tomb.

Remember, Jesus is not dead. He is alive. The tomb is empty! He is not only the historical Jesus, he is the present Jesus. He is not behind us, lingering in the past; he is ahead of us, preparing the way for us.

Can you hear him call your name? If you open your heart, you can hear him--calling you! He died for you. He rose from the grave for you. The power of the empty tomb is yours for the taking. It has the power to save your life! Accept the gift of new life today.

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up, your voice and sing;

Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!"

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It is a day set aside to honor all mothers. Anna M. Jarvis, a native of Grafton, West Virginia, is credited with starting this tradition. On May 9, 1906, on the first anniversary of her mother’s death she held a memorial meeting with friends, and in 1907 a church service was held on that date. As a result of her efforts, Philadelphia observed May 10, 1908, as Mother’s Day. Miss Jarvis continued her efforts by writing to many influential people to observe that day. In May, 1913, Pennsylvania made it a state holiday. In 1913 the United States Congress recommended that the second Sunday in May be made a national holiday honoring mothers.

It was a vanity plate with the letters MHR—Markie’s initials. He heard me and answered, Thanks, buddy. I love you.

A BABY IN HEAVEN TALKS WITH GOD

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?" "Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy." God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy." Again the child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?" God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."

Dear Central Baptist Friends, I would like to thank you for the prayers and heartfelt notes I received while recovering from surgery. It meant more than you know. I have received encouraging reports from my doctors this past week. I get stronger and feel more like myself each day. Our loving God has answered prayers. Do you remember hanging a May Basket on your neighbor's door? Do you remember going around the Maypole and falling on the floor? If you recall those days you are in my age bracket, We had lots of quiet fun without making a noisy racket. Hide and seek was a fun game, if you were never found, It was a challenge to hide without making a sound. The games of this modern age are a very different kind, Requiring nimble fingers, earphones and a very quick mind.
