AsheadoftheSpanishsectioninWorldLanguages&LiteraturesatPSUandleadorganizerforCine-Lit ("cinemaandliterature")2007,apreeminentfilmandliteratureinternationalconference,hesecured$75,000infundsfromtheNorthwestFilmCenter,theOregonCouncilfortheHumanities,Portland/GuadalajaraSister-CityAssociation,andCentroMexicano deOregon. HeisatranslationandinterpretationvolunteerforBRAVOYouthOrchestras(anafterschoolmusicprograminNorthPortland).Asaqualifiedmedicalinterpreterinthemetroarea,Dr. Fernández givesvoice—withknowledgeandcare—toLatinxs andHispanicsnegotiatingcomplexhealth-relatedissues.

Dr.FernándezisaUniversityStudiescorefacultymemberatPSU.In2014-2015,heco-authoredandpilotedanewFreshmenInquiry(FRINQ)course—Immigration,Migration,andBelonging—forPSU'sUniversityStudies. In2017,hewasappointedasDiversity,Equity,andInclusionCoordinatorforUniversityStudies.

Hispublishedworkappearsin ComparativeLiteratureStudies, OregonLiteraryReview,and PMLA (PublicationsoftheModernLanguageAssociation).
