Meetings with researchers

CGLS holds regular dis-

cussion sessions with

individuals working on

gender issues. A num-

ber of researchers have

already presented the

results of their works

during these discussions.

Among the themes were

“The Image of Women

in Advertising,”

“Representation of

Gender Roles in Text-

books of Armenian

Schools,” “Impact of

Male Migration on

Women in Rural

Communities,”

“Women as Defenders

of their Rights,” etc.

These discussion ses-

sions are one of the

important aspects of

the Center’s opera-

tion. It creates the

opportunity for re-

their work to the pub-

lic at large and em-

phasize the gender

issues in the Armeni-

an society.

A particular emphasis was

put on Betty Fridan’s The

Feminist Mystery and

Simone de Beauvoir’s The

Second Sex.

The presentation generat-

ed a discussion and debate.

Taking into account the

opinions expressed during

the discussion session, it

could be concluded that the majori-

ty of participants considered the

economic sphere to be superior to

other fields of activity. For that mat-

ter, women’s entry into the eco-

nomic sphere must be encouraged

in Armenia upon which depends

women’s independence.

Ani Manukyan spoke

about the feminist move-

ment in US and Europe.

Some of the prominent

figures of the period were

Betty Fridan and Simone

de Beauvoir whose lives

and feminist activism Ani

had researched in depth.

Center for Gender and Leadership Studies

On June 28, 2013, the Center for Gen-

der and Leadership Studies hosted Ms.

Ani Manukyan who presented her re-

search on waves of feminist move-

ments which she carried out at the

Arizona State University.
