Centennial High School (Volume XXII, Issue 1) August/September 2021 Welcome Letter Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to Centennial High School. I would like to speak to you about your child’s education. It is Centennial’s mission to prepare your child for success beyond graduation. At Centennial, we have various programs in place to assist your child in being successful after graduation. I have outlined them below: Advanced Placement Program: Students are taught at the collegiate level where your child can earn college credit at many universities if they pass the AP Exam with a 3, 4, or 5. Dual-Credit: We are one of only two high schools in the Clark County School District who are partnered with the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) to provide dual credit. This year we are starting with senior classes at the honors level to include English 12 honors, US Government Honors, and Precalculus BC. These credits are free to our students. We will continue to expand this partnership each year to include more opportunities for our students. CTE Programs: Students can take classes such as Manufacturing and Technology, Furniture and Cabinetry, Military Science JROTC, Business and Marketing, Fashions, Culinary Arts, and Forensic Science. If students complete these programs they are also eligible to receive college credit. TEACH: A CTE program designed to prepare students interested in a career in education. If students complete this program they are also eligible to receive college credit. Pre-AP Biology, Chemistry, and English: Courses designed to provide exposure to rigors of Advanced Placement and college level courses. 360Math in Algebra and Prealgebra classes: We are putting a premium on our entry level math classes by lowering class sizes and utilizing a teaching strategy known as 360 math. We are so happy to be back in face to face instruction with students. We know last year was hard and unfortunately, we aren’t quite out of the woods yet. I wish I could say that words like Covid, variant, social distancing, and masks were a thing of the past but they are still a part of our daily reality. Please remind your student to wear their mask every day and stay home if you feel at all sick. Also, please call the school and let us know if you are feeling unwell so we can protect the other students and staff through contact tracing and notification. We will get through this together. Safety is a priority at Centennial and we need to work together to provide a safe campus. Research shows that communication is critical in preventing violence. Please notify the school if you suspect that someone has a weapon, drugs, or plans to harm someone at the school. In addition to Safevoice, Centennial will be instituting a policy that requires all students to wear their student ID every day to class. The first ID and lanyard will be free. If a child loses their lanyard, they will be charged $4 dollars for a replacement. To prepare your child for success, it is important that they become involved in a school athletic team, NJROTC, performing arts group, or any of the many extra-curricular programs that Centennial has available. Research has shown that students who are involved in school activities become a part of the school community and are more likely to graduate and become successful after high school.

Welcome Letter

Welcome!

It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to Centennial High School. I would like to speak

to you about your child’s education. It is Centennial’s mission to prepare your child for success

beyond graduation. At Centennial, we have various programs in place to assist your child in being

successful after graduation. I have outlined them below:

Advanced Placement Program: Students are taught at the collegiate level where your

child can earn college credit at many universities if they pass the AP Exam with a 3, 4, or

5.

Dual-Credit: We are one of only two high schools in the Clark County School District who

are partnered with the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) to provide dual credit. This year

we are starting with senior classes at the honors level to include English 12 honors, US

Government Honors, and Precalculus BC. These credits are free to our students. We will

continue to expand this partnership each year to include more opportunities for our

students.

CTE Programs: Students can take classes such as Manufacturing and Technology,

Furniture and Cabinetry, Military Science JROTC, Business and Marketing, Fashions, Culinary

Arts, and Forensic Science. If students complete these programs they are also eligible to

receive college credit.

TEACH: A CTE program designed to prepare students interested in a career in education.

If students complete this program they are also eligible to receive college credit.

Pre-AP Biology, Chemistry, and English: Courses designed to provide exposure to rigors of

Advanced Placement and college level courses.

360Math in Algebra and Prealgebra classes: We are putting a premium on our entry level

math classes by lowering class sizes and utilizing a teaching strategy known as 360 math.

We are so happy to be back in face to face instruction with students. We know last year was hard

and unfortunately, we aren’t quite out of the woods yet. I wish I could say that words like Covid,

variant, social distancing, and masks were a thing of the past but they are still a part of our daily

reality. Please remind your student to wear their mask every day and stay home if you feel at all

sick. Also, please call the school and let us know if you are feeling unwell so we can protect the

other students and staff through contact tracing and notification. We will get through this

together.

Safety is a priority at Centennial and we need to work together to provide a safe

campus. Research shows that communication is critical in preventing violence. Please notify the

school if you suspect that someone has a weapon, drugs, or plans to harm someone at the

school. In addition to Safevoice, Centennial will be instituting a policy that requires all students to

wear their student ID every day to class. The first ID and lanyard will be free. If a child loses their

lanyard, they will be charged $4 dollars for a replacement.

To prepare your child for success, it is important that they become involved in a school athletic

team, NJROTC, performing arts group, or any of the many extra-curricular programs that

Centennial has available. Research has shown that students who are involved in school activities

become a part of the school community and are more likely to graduate and become successful

after high school.

Please remind your students that the habits that they are developing now are habits that will stay

with them for life. Hard work, being on time, developing a healthy sense of curiosity, speaking up

for yourself, and developing healthy relationships with others are skills that translate into the adult

world. Please have conversations with your young adults about your expectations for them when

they are on campus; being on time to class, asking questions when they need help, working well

with others, respecting the campus and learning environment etc. These are the hallmarks of

successful students and adults.

Preparing your child for graduation requires teamwork and I am extending an invitation to you to

work together as a team. We can work together by communicating. Please visit our website

regularly at www.centennialhighschool.org and visit Infinite Campus weekly. Please pay special

attention to your child’s assignments in Infinite Campus and Canvas. Completing assignments is

one of the critical steps in increasing achievement and your child’s grade point average. Feel

free to Email your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child’s academic progress.

Every month I host a Parent Advisory Meeting and I invite you to attend. At these meetings, we

discuss school and educational issues. A parent volunteer group is established to assist the school

with such functions as ice cream socials, student and teacher appreciation, graduation activities,

and other functions as they arise. The first Parent Advisory Meeting will be held on September 9,

2021 at 9:30 a.m. in the Library Conference Room. As I know many of you may still want to attend

virtually, I am including a google meet link as well: meet.google.com/kzk-wckm-erv

Attendance is another critical piece to a successful high school career and you can monitor your

child’s attendance through Infinite Campus as well. Attendance is live and the teachers mark

attendance throughout the day.

At this time, Centennial is anticipating an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. We are at

capacity and with the number of students enrolling; we may have to make schedule changes

the first month of school to level classes. Rest assured we will continue to provide an outstanding

education for your child. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, feel free to call the

school at 702-799-3440.

Sincerely,

Keith Wipperman, Principal

PSAT Offered

Taking the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT/ACT exams is considered an indicator of student success and

college readiness. Other indicators include enrolling in Honors and/or AP/IB courses, and

completing four years of math and science.

The results of this year’s PSAT will identify your child’s strengths and areas that need improvement.

The examination will also serve as a practice for sophomores taking the Preliminary SAT/National

Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and the SAT in your child’s junior year.

The PSAT will be administered October 13 to all sophomores and paying juniors. Juniors may pay

for the test at the school bank. The deadline to register is September13. There will be NO LATE

REGISTRATION.

Students will be provided in advance with a PSAT/NMSQT Official Student Guide to help them

Clubs and Activities The following is a list of clubs and activities at Centennial High School. All students are encouraged

to participate and be involved in those areas of interest to them. Please see the advisors for more

details regarding each club.

School Bank

The following guidelines refer to school banking procedures:

School bank cannot give change; therefore, students need to come to school with

change for the vending machines.

Centennial High School is not responsible for money lost in vending machines. You must

contact the 1-800 number listed on the vending machines, for assistance.

School bank will only be open to students before and after school, or during lunch. Should

you have questions concerning student fines, please contact the school bank at 702-

799-3440 ext. 4044, or have your student visit the school bank located inside the main

office next to the attendance counter.

The school bank hours are 6:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Student Fines

Student fines can be assessed for any of the following circumstances, and will follow the student’s

enrollment history as long as they remain in Clark County. Lost or damaged textbooks, lost or

damaged equipment, school issued uniforms (i.e. performing arts, athletic teams, NJROTC, etc.)

student class fees/class projects (i.e. art, home economics, foods, woods, photography etc.)

Students who withdraw from school must return all school-issued items. If a student withdraws from

school and they have an outstanding fine, their fine record will forward to their next school of

enrollment. PLEASE NOTE: SENIORS who fail to clear any outstanding fines will risk not being able

to participate in the GradNite held in May or walking in the graduation ceremony. Fine notices

are handed out during senior English classes, periodically during the school year. These notices will

contain the type of fine your student is assessed, and the fine amount. Students may also check

with the school banker for any outstanding fines before or after school, or during their lunch break.

If you have discrepancies with the fines assessed, your student should contact the teacher who

assessed the fine. In the spring, the senior fine list will be posted outside of the school bank. The lists

are updated frequently, and ALL seniors are encouraged to check the list for any fines assessed.

Student fines may be paid with cash, money order or credit card (Personal checks will not be

accepted during the last 30 days of school.)

Student Success Office

NEW CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL POLICY

Students are required to wear their student ID at all times on the provided lanyard from Centennial

High School. The student ID must be visible at all times while students are on campus.

Plagiarism and Cheating

Centennial High School forbids plagiarism and cheating. Plagiarism is the use of work created by

others. All quoted or paraphrased material in student work must be accompanied by a proper

citation. Allowing other students to copy work from you is also considered plagiarism.

Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy

Students and Parents: We want to remind you that cell phones are only to be used before school,

after school, and during lunch. They are to be off the rest of the day. If a teacher sees or hears

a cell phone in class, he/she may confiscate it and turn it into the Student Success office. The first

time a student’s phone is turned in it may be returned to the student at the end of the day.

Subsequent problems may require the parent to come in and pick up the student’s cell phone.

Refusal to give a teacher a cell phone may result in a Required Parent Conference.

Tardies

All students are tardy if they are not in their classrooms before the tardy bell rings for each period.

Students who are more than 30 minutes late will be marked absent. Any teacher, administrator,

campus monitor, or police officer may send a tardy student to the student success office for the

appropriate disciplinary action at any time. Tardy sweeps will be conducted every period during

the school day. The purpose of the tardy sweep is to encourage students to report to class on

time. Students caught in a tardy sweep will receive a Notification of Violation of the Tardy Policy

and will be sent to class. A parent/guardian must sign the Tardy Sweep Notification for

reinstatement the next school day. Students that are not reinstated the next day will be placed

on Required Parent Conference and will not be allowed to attend class until a parent/guardian

signs the student back into school. All teachers will enforce the Tardy Policy when students arrive

late to class.

Warning!

Parents and students, the Student Success Office at Centennial High School would like to remind

you of certain district policies and ask for your assistance in preventing the violation of these

policies. The Clark County School District has identified four offenses that they have little or no

tolerance for. If one of these offenses is committed, the school is directed to expel the offending

student.

Parents, we are asking that you sit down with your son or daughter and discuss the significance of

these policies and the severity of the consequences if they are violated. In particular, make sure

your student does not come to school with ANY type of weapon. The Student School Office has

held numerous conferences where they have met with parents related to the violation of this

particular policy. Many times the parents and students believe they have extenuating

circumstances. These include:

My son/daughter went camping this weekend and forgot to take it out of his/her

backpack.

It was a gift from his/her grandmother.

He/she uses it at work to cut open boxes and forgot it.

Please discuss this with your son or daughter so there will be no inadvertent violations of one of

these policies. Your support and attention to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Student Searches

Students are hereby informed that they will be subject to search whenever they enter campus.

This includes, but is not limited to, unauthorized returns. This notice does not exclude personnel

from searching a student at any time should there be reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing.

Dress Code and Appearance

The Centennial High School dress code is in accordance with CCSD Regulation 5131. The school

administration shall have the right to designate which types of dress, fashion, fads, or appearance

disrupt or detract from the educational program and may be a potential safety hazard. The

specific requirements and prohibitions are:

1. Require the wearing of shoes with soles (no house slippers).

2. Require the wearing of shirts or blouse appropriately buttoned in accord with the design

of that shirt or blouse. Length must extend beyond the belt level with no skin showing

between bottom shirt/blouse and top of pants or skirts.

3. Prohibit wearing of crop tops, clothing that is strapless, spaghetti straps, tank tops, low-cut

or has slits, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage or that are see through.

Clothing worn underneath shirt, jackets, coats, etc. must be within dress code (no

spaghetti straps, tank tops, halter-tops, or low cut tops).

4. Require that all attire be at least fingertip length including slits in skirts. If shorts are worn,

they must be hemmed and without fraying. NO CUTOFFS!

5. No pajamas, tank tops or muscle shirts.

6. Prohibit the wearing of sunglasses in the building.

7. Prohibit the wearing or possession of hats/headgear on campus except for designated

school uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities. This includes special dress-

up days.

8. Prohibit slogans or advertising on clothing, which by their controversial or obscene nature

disrupt the educational setting (this includes any clothing that advertises racial bigotry,

weapons, sexual activities, smoking, alcoholic beverages, or drugs).

9. Prohibits the wearing of gloves, bandannas, spiked or studded jewelry, wallet chains, or

any gang related clothing.

10. Coats, mittens, and scarves must be removed upon entering the classroom.

11. Prohibits the wearing of pants in sagging fashion that displays undergarments, or any attire

that is not conducive to the educational setting of Centennial High School. No

undergarments may be displayed. Any student violating the dress code will not be

allowed to attend class. The principal shall retain the authority to grant exceptions for

special occasions and/or conditions.

Attendance

Attendance notifications will be automatically sent out daily for students with unverified absences.

Unverified absence letters will be sent home on the third (3), fifth (6), and seventh (7) unapproved

absence. The letter for seven unverified absences is the Denial of Credit Notification. The Clark

County School District Regulation 5113 limits unapproved absences in any class to seven (7) per

semester. Students will not earn credit for that course that semester and the final grade issued will

be an F. In an effort to maximize Instructional time in the classroom and minimize lost school days.

Centennial High School is continuing a Saturday School intervention program, in order for an

appeal to be considered.

What is the procedure that should be followed after an absence? Students who have been

absent must provide notice from the parent/guardian to the school explaining the reason for the

absence within three (3) school days after their return from the absence. Parent/Guardian

explanations should include the following information:

1. The first and last name of the student.

2. The date(s) the student was absent.

3. The reason the student was physically or mentally unable to attend, how the absence was

related to the student’s disability, or the nature of the emergency.

The principal/designee will determine whether the absence is classified as excused or unexcused.

Students or parents/guardians are allowed three school days after the return from a student’s

absence to request homework.

What happens if notification regarding the absence is not provided to the school within three (3)

school days? If an acceptable explanation of the absence is not provided within three school

days, the absence is unexcused and, in accordance with NRS 392.130, is deemed a truancy.

Prearranged Absences

Parents/Guardians must submit a written request to the school prior to the absence(s). The

maximum number of arranged absences is 10 per school year. Forms to request an arranged

absence are available in the Attendance and Student Success Office.

Transportation

Parents or guardians of students requiring district bus transportation will need to make contact

with the CCSD transportation department by visiting the transportation website at

http://transportation.ccsd.net in order to register for bus transportation and receive information

regarding your student’s pick up site.

Parents, we want your students to be safe at all times at school and when using school district

transportation. It is imperative that students follow all rules and regulations when on the bus. Bus

transportation is a privilege. We want to help protect the privilege by asking all parents to support

our efforts to maintain a safe environment on the bus. We ask that you continue to encourage

your children to follow all rules and directions given by the driver. Violations may result in your

child being referred to the Student Success Office on a bus referral and possible loss of riding

privileges. An overview of transportation information is also provided in your child’s student

planner.

Remember, the school bus lanes are very busy before and after school. We ask that you not drop

off on the west side of the building. Students are to be dropped off and picked up in the front of

the building only. All areas marked red, or are designated no parking zones, are to be adhered

to.

It is our deepest desire to make sure that everyone riding the buses and visiting our campus is safe.

We want to model the appropriate behavior for our students at all times. We hold students

accountable because we are preparing them for success beyond graduation. If you have any

questions, please call transportation at 702-799-8100 for school transportation issues.

Locker Information

If a student would like a locker, they must fill out a locker request form, located in the Student

Success Office. Students should not share lockers or locker combinations.

Student Parking

Students may park in any available space that is not designated for Centennial Staff, visitors, or

handicapped parking. Centennial High School reserves the right to refuse parking privileges for

students who do not display courteous and safe driving habits. Available in the 2021-2022 school

year, we are offering designated junior and senior parking. Please contact our activities office at

702-799-3440 Ext. 4200 for more information.

Cafeteria

Centennial High School provides a cafeteria where students may eat during the lunch period.

Students are asked to leave tables clean and conduct themselves in an orderly manner. All

rubbish is to be placed in the garbage cans. If you have any questions please call the Food Service

Department at 702-799-8123.

Closed Campus

Centennial is a closed campus. Students may not leave during the day, nor may they go to the

parking lot at lunch or between classes. Seniors on a reduced schedule will receive an “early out”

card, which they must carry with them and present to administrative personnel daily as they exit

the building. Seniors who have an open period at the end of the day must leave campus after

their last scheduled class.

Bulldog Athletics 21-22

For the fall sports schedules, please visit Centennial High School’s website at

schools.ccsd.net/centennial/athletics.html

Welcome to Centennial High School Athletics. If you need to contact someone in the Athletic

Office, please call at 702-799-3440 at the following extensions:

Doug Wilbur, Athletic Administrator, ext. 4202

Mike Livreri, Athletic Director, ext. 4120

Liz Johnson, Athletic Secretary, ext. 4202

Centennial High School –Fall Athletic Tryouts Bulldog Athletics

The first day for fall sport tryouts is Saturday, August 7. Students must have registered on Register

My Athlete, pay the $25 fee, complete athletic packet and physical, and submit 2020-2021 CCSD

Athletic Packet Electronic Records release form to the athletic office prior to tryouts. Each athlete

must have completed 10 practices prior to participation in a sport. For more information, visit the

Centennial High School website at https://www.centennialhighschool.org/ or contact the athletic office

at 702-799-3440, ext. 4202.

Eligibility – Zone Variances

Any student on a zone variance wishing to participate in athletics is entitled to play sub-varsity

sports only for one year. This is not automatic. Students may apply for eligibility by filling out an

NIAA Transfer Appeal (also known as the “Sub- Varsity Waiver”). This form is available at the

Centennial High School Athletic Office. Students are not eligible to play until this form is filled out

and approved by the CCSD Director of Student Athletics. If approved, students must play sub-

varsity sports for one year. Once that obligation is fulfilled, students may participate in varsity sports

for the remainder of their high school career. Please remember that zone variances must be

renewed each year the student attends Centennial.

Residential Affidavits – Any student that is enrolled at Centennial High School on a residential

affidavit is automatically ineligible to participate in athletics.

High School Out-Of-Zone

These forms, and this process, can be very tedious and may take up to 90 days, but it is very

necessary as to alleviate eligibility problems in the future. Students may not compete until this

process is complete.

Participation in Athletics Eligibility

This regulation shall apply to all students who represent the school by participation in

interscholastic athletics.

To be eligible for athletic participation, students in grades 9-12, except a first semester ninth

grader, must have passed two (2) units of credit and earned a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0

for all classes during the semester prior to the season in which the student wishes to participate. A

student earning less than a 2.0 GPA the immediate preceding semester will be ineligible for

participation for the ensuing three-week grading period. If at the end of the three-week grading

period a student regains a 2.0 GPA, he/she will be eligible for the ensuing grading period.

Family Passes

Over the last couple of years, many questions have arisen regarding policies governing family

passes. These questions are of concern district-wide and are not specific to Centennial High

School. Here are a few guidelines for the use of family passes:

• Family passes are only to be used for immediate family members.

• A maximum of six (6) family members will be allowed entrance to an individual event. Any

number over six will have to pay the posted entrance fee.

• All family members entering on a pass must enter together.

• Centennial High School has a “No Re-Entry” policy for athletic events. The policy is in place

for security reasons. At no time will anyone be allowed to exit and then re-enter.
