PERSONS OF SCHOOL .AGE ..

The designation '~persons of school age" includes, for census purposes, all persons from 5 to 20 years of age, inclusive, although there is but little uniformity in the age limits prescribed by the several states and territories.

The number of persons of school age, in each of the 5

states considered in this bulletin, is presented in detail by sex, general nativity, and color in tables 1 to 3. Table 21, which follows, shows for the same states the proportion of this class who are either native or foreign born.

The proportion of native and foreign white and colored persons of school age in 1900 in each state under consideration is shown in table 22.

In the remaining states of the group the proportion of illiterates for this class of the males is small, ranging from seven-tenths of 1 per cent in Montana to 1.4 per cent in New Hampshire. rrhe proportion of illiterates among native white males of voting age who are of foreign parentage is also small in all of these states, the largest, 5. 2 per cent, being in New Hampshire.

Of the foreign white males of voting age in New Hampshire in 1900, nearly one-fourth, or 24 per cent, are illiterate. For the remaining states of the group the proportions are comparatively small, or 7 per cent in Nevada, 6. 8 per cent in Missouri, 6. 7 per cent in Montana, and 5~ 1 per cent in Nebraska.

Of the colored males of voting age in 1900, more than one-half of those in Nevada, or 58. 7 per cent, are illiterate, this being due in good part to the presence among males of this class of a large number of illiterate Indians and Chinese. In Montana 39. 7 per cent of all colored males of voting age are illiterate, which is also due largely to the

illiterate Indians, Chinese, and Japanese residing within the limits of the state. In Missouri 31. 8 per cent of all colored males of this class are reported as illiterate, but in this instance the proportion is due to the presence among males of this class of a large numbe~· of illiterate persons of negro descent. In New Hampshire 19. 8 per cent, and in Nebraska 16. 7 per cent, of all colored males of voting age in 1900 are illiterate.

)foreign born males of voting age are distributed according to citizenship and literacy in table 16, and from the figures therein presented is derived table 30, showing the proportion of foreign born males of voting age in 1900
