Daniel's work in music is aimed in part at thefurther incorporation and understanding ofthe guitar's enormous potential as a "concertinstrument" for the 21st century. He has a broadrepertoire based on famous standards, neglectedmasterpieces ofthe past and present, and controversial transcriptions of music originally forother instruments. Also a passionate performer of compelling (and sometimes confusing!) newmusic, he has collaborated with composers Roberto Sierra, Evan Ziporyn (Bang on a Can) andSergio Assad on his performances and recordings oftheir music.
DANIEL CORR is active as a performingartist and teacher on both coasts. He has beena featured performer in many recitals andchamber music concerts for guitar societies, festivals, and universities. Recent highlightsinclude a performance ofthe Villa-Lobosconcerto at Benaroya Recital Hall with theSeattle Creative Orchestra, and at the WaltonCentenary Conference in a concert shared withthe Portland (Maine) String Quartet. Danielwas the subject of an article in the HartfordCourant, which endorsed his series of "libraryconcerts" this season in New England.
Daniel is the winner ofthe 2002 Northwest Guitar Competition, a prizewinner in the 1999Crane ew Music Solo Performer Competition adjudicated by George Crumb, and a recipientof Yale's Eliot Fisk Prize as the "outstanding graduate in guitar" in 2001. He is a graduateof Com ish College and the Yale School of Music where his principal teachers were StevenNovacek and Benjamin Verdery. He has also studied with Sharon Isbin at the Aspen MusicSchool, and Fabio Zanon at Domain Forget.

Gioachino Rossini Italian Composer 1792-1868
Rossini's output included a mind-boggling total of some thirty-nine operas of which The SilkenLadder, composed in 1812, showed his predilection for writing light-hearted works of a farcicalnature, the ever-popular Barber of Seville being a prime example of this genre. This overture startsin brisk fashion with a burst of energy from descending strings; a plaintive oboe solo follows, then afaster-paced allegro in typical Rossinian style brings this delightful piece to a happy close.
Frederick Delius English Composer 1862-1934
Delius, a relatively unknown composer outside of the British Isles, was born in England of animmigrant German family. After traveling widely, including a two-year sojourn in Florida, he finallysettled in France after studies in Leipzig. But his heart remained in England and his tone poemsdescribing the countryside in particular are indelible portraits of rural life. The cuckoo is a strangebird that winters iri North Africa before migrating to Northern Europe in the spring - also, like theAmerican cow-bird, it has the rather unfortunate habit of laying a single egg in another bird's nestwhich, when hatched, ejects the host-family's other chicks. But despite this, the cuckoo is held instrong affection because its call in the woods in spring becomes the harbinger in people's minds of thearrival of summer. This work, written in 1912, is dreamily evocative of a quiet woodland where thecuckoo's call is recreated in musical terms by the clarinet while the strings provide an atmosphere ofutmost peace and tranquillity. In later years, as blindness set in, Delius was forced to dictate the musicin his mind, note by note, to an amanuensis.
Joaquin Rodrigo Spanish Composer 1901-1999
Rodrigo also suffered from blindness although his affliction was from birth. Just as Delius' musicis quintessentially English so is Rodrigo's the heart and soul of Spain. No wonder then that heshould have written so abundantly for the guitar, this Concierto de Aranjuez being the most popularand beloved around the world. The concerto is in three movements, the first beginning with a solostrumming effect that introduces the principal theme and taken over later by the orchestra (theensemble is relatively small, befitting the need for not overwhelming the relatively small sound ofthe solo instrument). There follows a series of musical conversations as the guitar weaves its way inand around the wind instruments while the strings often provide the folk-like rhythms of Valencia, thecomposer's birthplace. A gentle strumming figure also introduces the second movement but this is justan accompaniment to a beautiful melody played by the English Horn (which in fact is an alto oboe!).The guitar then restates this theme while embellishing many single notes with a faster pattern sotypical of the instrument. A cadenza leads to a passage reminiscent of flamenco and its sustained clapsand finger-snapping, but calm returns at the end to close this extraordinary portrait of Spanish art andmusic. The third movement is once again started by the guitarist but soon the orchestra joins in thisfestive dance of sometimes quirky rhythms. This remarkable concerto ends just as quietly as it began.
George Frederic Handel German Composer 1685-1759
Handel, although German by birth, virtually adopted the British because of their love for his music, oming the nation's pre-eminent composer. Many of his operas and oratorios were written in
English and even his most famous work, The Messiah, was first performed in Dublin. He was afavorite of King George I and was commissioned by a courtier to write music for a royal party,
eluding the musicians, that would sail on barges down the Thames, hence the title "Water Music".andel's music was such an instant success that it had to be played three times - of interest is not thesual ensemble of strings, oboes, trumpets and drums, but the prominence of French Horns whichad just been introduced from Europe and were new to the large audience which accompanied the
King on a flotilla of other boats.
The Coronation of George II took place in Westminster Abbey in 1727, the music being entrustedo Handel who, happily and appropriately, had just become an English citizen. The two anthems to
performed today show how easily Handel was able to write in his newly-adopted tongue - thefluidity ofthe musical lines as also a sense of occasion have resulted in these pieces being so highly
rized by choirs and praised by musicologists as masterpieces of their time. "Zadok the Priest" is therst to be heard and relates the story from the Bible of Solomon's annointment as King.
The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba is a wonderful vignette extracted from the opera Solomon andincludes oboes as well as the usual strings -one wonders if this famous Queen was indeed present atolomon's annointment - if so, a happy coincidence that joins these two works together on the same
"The King shall rejoice" is the most substantial of these Coronation Anthems and comes in fourrts, the opening song being followed by "Exceedingly glad shall he be", "Glory and worship has
- ou laid" and finally "Alleluja". Handel certainly loved his allelujasl
