The Family Monsters Garden celebrates 150 years of Family Action supporting families across the country and idverde's 100 years of creating and maintaining landscapes for the benefit of local communities.
The garden shows the pressures faced by every family and the journey families take to face these challenges. From financial problems to health and wellbeing issues, and from lack of time together to problems with communication and resolving disputes, the garden represents the range of pressures faced by families in Britain today. The journey to bringing these hidden issues out of the dark and into the open, so that they don’t become overwhelming, can be one of secrecy, shame and isolation, with pressures and progress obscured and hard to resolve.
The journey through this garden leads to a family space where people can come together to reflect, get their pressures out in the open and gather strength to face them together. The pool of clear water offers reflection and perspective.
For 150 years Family Action have been helping families across the country who are struggling to cope with everyday pressures, from money to health, to work to lack of time for family. To mark our 150th anniversary Family Action is starting a national conversation about family pressures – our family monsters – to help all families to talk about these and face them together.
Nearly 38 million people in Britain admit their close family faces pressures from time to time. What matters most is how we deal with those pressures not that these exist in the first place – just talking about our family monsters will help make them smaller.
As every family can face monsters, any family might need extra help from time to time. Visit www.familymonstersproject.com for support or to find out more and join the conversation using #myfamilymonsters.
Alistair shares his own Family Monster that inspired the garden The Family Monsters Garden is personal to me because I have my own family monster, which I’ve previously shut away. My life, and importantly that of my family, turned upside down two days after we scooped a Gold Medal for Mind Trap at Chelsea 2017. I had my first of many seizures in the back of a black cab. I was diagnosed with epilepsy, something I suspect was presenting itself some time before; I’d have moments I’d forget, strange sensations and feelings – I’d put it down to the everyday strains from working hard, bringing up a young family etc.
Despite being told “everything will be alright, it’s a manageable condition” – it doesn’t help when it’s raw, when the anxiety that accompanies it is a huge obstacle to overcome. For me it’s the toughest and hardest period of time I’ve ever experienced. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride, some days good, others not so.
But my monster, whilst not tamed just yet, is perhaps a little smaller and is getting more manageable. I have a support network that gets me through, I find that talking about my problems and anxieties with the condition helps. I know I’m not alone as research for Family Action found that when asked about common family pressures, health and wellbeing was one of the main ones.
