CLARKLA SPINETTA2013 VERMENTINO

I just reintroduced myself to this wine a few days ago, and I’m glad I did. The 2013 vintage has aromas of lime peel and sea grass. Bright fruit flavors of peach and lime, and subtle floral notes are accented by mineral. There is plenty of lime citrus providing balance to this medium-bodied wine. Enjoy this wine chilled anytime on its own. It will also be great with a wide range of fish preparations, calamari, and even chicken fajitas.

$17.99Everyday $22.49

BEAULIEU VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON2012 RUTHERFORD

Fruit-focused aromas and flavors of this Rutherford Cabernet take center stage, while subtle vanilla-oak and mocha nuances from barrel aging linger in the background. This wine pairs well with mellow cheeses and red meats, such as filet of beef tenderloin.

MAR DE ENVERO, TROUPEALBARINO, RIAS BAIXAS,SPAIN 2013

The wine is pale golden lemon colored, crisp, elegant and fresh. Bone-dry and aromatic, it is packed with flavors of white peach, apricot, melon, pineapple, mango and honeysuckle. It has good natural acidity, mineral overtones, and medium-body with moderate alcohol.Win-Win, Cheers!

CHRIS K.CHÂTEAU ANEY 2011

Château Aney’s wines have finesse and balance that make them both approachable now and perfect for longer aging. They are a great choice for any cellar, and are a classic example of wines from Bordeaux famed Haut-Medoc. The final blend of the wine sourced throughout the thirty hectares of vineyards is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot.

CALERA CENTRALCOAST PINOT NOIR 2012

This remarkable wine pairs so nicely with a wide range of foods. That’s the main reason it’s my pick this month. But it’s not just a food wine; it’s great to share with the special person in your life, family, and friends. Berry aromas flow from the glass, followed on the palate by plum and cherry flavors that are highlighted by a bit of spice; think cinnamon.

TRUCHARD CABERNET SAUVIGNONCARNEROS 2011

From the hills of Northern Carneros comes Truchard. This cool-weather cabernet is abundantly smooth with medium oak, silky tannins, and an elegant mouthfeel. There’s also a mineral component found only in the Cabernets of Carneros. Though young, the 2011 is drinking great right now. This one is a must for all you California Cabernet lovers! It truly outperforms its price point.

WATHEN’S SINGLEBARREL BOURBON

TRACEY’SSPIRIT PICK

This bourbon comes in at 94 proof, and doesn’t have an age statement. However, it should be around 7 to 8 years old. Since no barrels are blended together, each one is bottled when it has matured long enough to have the complexity of a great bourbon. The nose has brown sugar with a hint of tobacco. The taste has medium oak with vanilla and caramel, and it has a light finish with a bit of cinnamon. I for one am very excited to have another great single barrel in our market, and urge you to try it!

MONKEY SHOULDER BLENDED SCOTCH

JESSE’SSPIRIT PICK

Monkey Shoulder is a blended Scotch a cut above the rest. Inside the bottle is a liquid tour of Speyside starring Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie all blended together. I’m talking creamy toffee and sweet vanilla notes that make this dram easy to drink and hard to put down! Great as a mixer, or for a Bourbon drinker who is curious about Scotch, but associates them all with heat and smoke.

SUMMIT PILSENER6-PACK BOTTLES

Macro lagers have all but made “pilsner” a dirty word in the craft beer world, but breweries like Summit are out to set the record straight. Made in the Czech style, Summit Pilsener comes in at a sessionable 4.5% abv and is a great beer to be paired with food, as its light body and crisp, floral hop profile will not overpower your palate.

STILLWATER CLASSIQUE6-PACK CANS

Classique by Stillwater Artisanal is considered a postmodern style beer showing characteristics that sample from both a saison and a premium lager. The use of corn, rice, pilsner malt and American hops, as well as the introduction of farmhouse yeast give Classique a unique flavor and mouthfeel while the 4.5% abv and light body keep the beer “user friendly.”

Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. With Merlot the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot that exudes multiple layers of flavor and a nice seductive texture, so we combine fruit from Paso Robles, Sonoma and Monterey County. Our Paso Robles grapes deliver sweet fruit flavors, spice notes and earthy, mineral nuances; our Sonoma fruit contributes natural acidity to create more balance and finesse; and Monterey County grapes provide richness and concentration.

WINEMAKER’S NotES2012 was an excellent vintage across California because of steady, mild temperatures that persisted throughout summer. The ideal weather helped us achieve rich, deeply concentrated fruit with good complexity, pervasive spice notes, and supple tannins.

Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. To create a light, fresh Sauvignon Blanc that displays good balance and vibrant flavors, we blend grapes from three locations: Alexander Valley, Sonoma Valley and Lake County. Alexander Valley fruit provides a core of citrus and juicy tropical fruit flavors. The high elevation volcanic soils of Lake County contribute pretty floral notes and the Sonoma Valley grapes boast distinct mineral nuances. To capture the varietal’s aromatic qualities, the wine is fermented and finished in stainless steel

WINEMAKER’S NotES2013 was an excellent vintage across California. There was very little rain that year and temperatures never got excessively warm for any period of time. These dry conditions produced intensely flavored fruit with a more pronounced range of complexity than in years past. On the palate, there is a crisp attack, followed by a harmonious balance with some soft sweetness. The body is light with supple consistency, and the length is generous with a fresh finish that creates a very elegant Sauvignon Blanc. tAStINg PRofIlEAppearance Pale Yellow Aromas Pink grapefruit, peaches and honey Flavors Lemon, figs, melon and minerals

Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. Pinot Grigio is a delicate varietal that can’t withstand too much sun and needs to be picked at precisely the right moment. When it’s just right, it bestows citrus notes, tropical fruit flavors, and pretty floral nuances you don’t find in other white varietals. To capture its personality without altering it with oak, we ferment and finish our Pinot Grigio entirely in stainless steel.

WINEMAKER’S NotES2013 was an excellent vintage across California. There was very little rain that year and temperatures never got excessively warm for any period of time. Plus, we got extra hangtime this season, harvesting a week and a half later than the year before. These conditions produced highly concentrated fruit with intense aromatics and a gentle sweetness. Upon tasting, the body is lean, the mid palate firm with medium length, and the finish is crisp and clean. tAStINg PRofIlEAppearance Light yellow with a green tinge Aromas Peaches, tangerine, guava, and plumeria Flavors Pineapple, cantaloupe, lemon and minerals

Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. Our Chardonnay grapes come from two distinct vineyards in Monterey: one near the Gabilan mountain range where the sandy loam soils result in a higher degree of flavor concentration; the other in the Arroyo Seco, where the temperatures remain relatively cool and the fruit maintains a crisp acidity. When we blend the wine from these two regions together, we achieve a lovely balance and greater complexity.

Winemaker’s notesIn the cellar, we stir the lees on a regular basis to achieve a more complex mouthfeel, and each lot is tasted independently once or twice a month to see when the development is just right. Another technique used in crafting this wine is keeping part of the wine in stainless steel and placing the other half in medium-toast oak barrels. This gives the wine subtle wood nuances without overpowering the more delicate flavors.

2013 was an excellent vintage across California. There was very little rain that year and temperatures never got excessively warm for any period of time. Plus, we got extra hangtime this season, harvesting a week and a half later than the year before. Our 2013 Chardonnay exhibits excellent body and a silky mouthfeel. The mid-palate shows supple, generous length and great flavor intensity with a persistent and clean finish from the crisp natural acidity.

Diamond Collection Claret typically includes some combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. We harvest grapes from our own estate as well as other Napa, Sonoma and El Dorado vineyards. This combination of climates results in great complexity and excellent balance. In fact, we joke that our Black Label Claret has a problem offering itself for far less than it deserves. It’s a premium wine at a popular price and it has set the bar for the quality of the entire brand. The bottle is distinguished with gold netting in order to convey its prestigious status, a tribute to the way Europe’s finest wines were once presented.

WINEMAKER’S NotES2012 was an excellent vintage across California due to the steady, mild temperatures during the summer months. This consistency helped the grapes mature gradually and develop deeply concentrated fruit with complex aromatics, excellent body, and supple tannins.

“The inspiration for the Diamond Collection was a bottle of 1906 Claret we found in the cellar of the Napa Valley property we purchased in 1975. We didn’t really know what Claret was and soon gathered it was the British name for wines from Bordeaux, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon blends. I liked the word Claret because the definition implied something that was clear and pure. But I was discouraged from using the term because people wouldn’t know what it meant.

Despite opposition, I felt strongly about creating a red blend and calling it Claret. I designed a new label and launched the Diamond Collection in 1997 with Black Label Claret, which is our company’s most recognized offering. Today, the Diamond collection has 13 varietals in all the colors of the rainbow. The quality and authenticity of Diamond Collection is extremely important because we are a family company and our name is on the label. Diamond Collection wines are classic California expressions that offer fruit-forward, multi-dimensional flavor and immediate drinkability. We pick our Monterey County Pinot Noir in the early morning hours and bring the fruit inside for immediate crush and 48-hours of cold soak. This technique helps intensify the color and elicit more profound aromas. During fermentation, the grapes are punched down four times a day to extract the maximum amount of flavor and just the right amount of tannin. The wine is then aged in small French oak barrels.

Winemaker’s notes2012 was an excellent vintage across California because of steady, mild temperatures that persisted throughout summer. Monterey, which always has cool weather, experienced mainly cold nights and foggy mornings this year. Pinot Noir thrives if early morning fog is present but dissipates by mid morning. These weather conditions helped to produce fruit with delicate and complex aromas. In fact, the fruit was very aromatic at the crusher, delivering spice and floral notes. The sheer complexity of this vintage far exceeds the wine’s price point. The wine shows an ample and rich body with layered structure and the length is generous with a persistent finish.

I designed a new label reminiscent of this old bottle and created the Diamond Collection Black Label Claret, which is our company’s most recognized offering. Today, Diamond Collection includes 13 varietals, each identified with a brightly colored label. The quality and authenticity of Diamond Collection is extremely important because we are a family company and our name is on the label. As such, you can trust that we’ ll always give you the very best.”

—Francis Ford Coppola

TITO’S VOKDATito’s Handmade Vodka is produced in Austin at Texas’ first and oldest legal distillery. It’s made in small batches in an old fashioned pot still by Tito Beveridge (actual name), a 50-something geologist, and distilled six times. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is designed to be savored by spirit connoisseurs and everyday drinkers alike. It is microdistilled in an old-fashioned pot still, just like fine single malt scotches and high-end French cognacs. This time-honored method of distillation requires more skill and effort than modern column stills, but it’s well worth it.
