CLOS DU VAL CABERNET SAUVIGNONSTAGS LEAP DISTRICT 2008“This captures the sumptuous layer cake of tannins that SLD cabernet can give. The fruit is pomegranate-black, the wine spicy and as fat as a duck, the seared breast of which would make a fine complement. Clos de Val’s cabernets tend to age well, and this bold, rich vintage will likely follow suit.” —Wine & Spirits

RAPTOR RIDGEESTATE PINOT NOIRCHEHALEM MT 2011

This wine is amazing! It offers BIG red fruit along with subtle spice. Pinot Noirs from Chehalem Mountain tend to be quite bold and decantable, with really good aging potential. This pinot is no exception: It’s big, juicy, and surprisingly acidic, with wonderful notes of plums and cherries. One can decant this bottle and enjoy it now, or it can be laid down for a few years. I’m very excited to have this in our store. Enjoy!

DAVID T.

CLARK

This has long been a favorite, whether entertaining at home or from the wine list of a fine restaurant. Sonoma Coast has what it takes to grow great Pinot Noir grapes. Cool Pacific influences ensure a long growing season resulting in small berries with good varietal character. This wine has cherry aromas that mingle with alluring cocoa, allspice and black tea notes. Flavors of pomegranate combine with red plum and orange zest to deliver a well-balanced, beautiful wine.

$19.99Everyday $25.99

BREGGO PINOT GRISANDERSON VALLEY 2012

Aromas are rich with notes of grapefruit, Bartlett Pear, Freesia, and melon. In the mouth, flavors of quince, lemon peel, and a hint of marzipan are lifted by the crisp acidity and broadly textured palate. An exotic array of flavors including grapefruit, grilled apricots, and pignoli linger on the finish.

DAVID F.JEAN LAURENTBLANC DE NOIRSN.V. BRUT CHAMPAGNE

Celebrate Springtime! Weddings, Mother’s Day, and Graduations are just around the corner. This “Grower Champagne” is perfect for your special events. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, this wine comes from the winemaker’s own 39 acres. More expressive of origin, these wines are sure to outshine other, more mass produced bubs from the behemoth Champagne houses who spill more wine in a year than this guy bottles. Cheers!

This delightful Rosé of Pinot Noir displays a subtle floral scent with nuances of stone fruits and bright citrus. Being a run-off rose, the wine is pale pink in color and is overall refreshing on the palate. The dry rose is the perfect addition to any outdoor gathering and will pair quite nicely with pate of frois gras, tuna tartar, or boiled shrimp.

EMMOLOSAUVIGNON BLANCNAPA VALLEY 2013

It’s not often I can describe a Napa Valley wine light and crisp. But here the winemaker has succeeded in crafting a great wine that I really enjoy pairing with shellfish, fish and seafood; and more. It offers a firm acidity balanced with a stark, steely flavor. Aromas are fresh and clean, like early morning after a first rain, with a hint of honeysuckle and underlying notes of tangerine and wet stone. The wine enters the palate with a crisp yet soft quality, flowing into flavors of flower blossom and ending with a mouthwatering finish of fresh-squeezed grapefruit. A long-lasting, zesty minerality leaves the sensation of both subtlety and brightness.

Grenache is the king of grape varieties when it comes to making light, racy, fruity rosés in contemporary style. It reveals all its suppleness and cherry aroma, its fig and cocoa flavors, and its rounded sensations on the palate, making it one of the great rosé wines of the South of France. It’s perfect to enjoy a few glasses on its own, on hot Arkansas days. It’s also a great food wine and nicely accompanies seafood, Mediterranean-style salads, Asian dishes, baked fish and spicy and stronger-tasting dishes such as Thai curries or Tajine.

MERLOT REVISITED:What in the world ever happened to Merlot? Lets have a look.

Clark TrimOwner/President

Throughout the 1990s Merlot rode a wave of success. By 2000, it actually passed Cabernet Sauvignon in total sales becoming the most sold varietal wine in the United States. Those were the days when “give me a Merlot” replaced the previously requested Chardonnay in bars, restaurants, and yes, in liquor stores.

More than any other variety, Merlot rode the "French Paradox" wave, the growing perception that wine might be good for you as well as fun to drink. It became the quintessential entry-level red: soft, easy-drinking and rarely challenging. The numbers from Merlot's run-up were truly staggering. In 1995, Merlot accounted for 3% of the California wine grape crush; in 2005, nearly 10%. In the same decade, Merlot went from 3% of supermarket wine sales to almost 12%.

Then in 2004, over ten years ago, came the movie Sideways. Here's the set- up: Thomas Haden Church's womanizing character Jack tries to get Paul Giamatti's wine snob character Miles to join him at a party.

Miles' retort — "If anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving; I am NOT drinking any "?*$% +^@ Merlot!"

Sideways produced $72 million in the United States, launched the careers of Giamatti, Church, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh, and one standout line from Miles had a resounding effect on Merlot's long enjoyed popularity. As successful as the movie was, it was also the demise of Merlot.

Merlot has taken some hits, both in reputation and in sales. Granted, Merlot has lost some of its magic, but it remains a very big deal, and a grape quite capable of making stellar wine.

I still hear customers refer to Mile's one liner when Merlot is offered up as a suggested red with wide crowd-pleasing appeal. My response is often in the form of a question. Do you know what the most expensive, most sought after red Bordeaux is? If they can't tell me, I give them the answer; Petrus. I go on to explain that Petrus is from Bordeaux in France and is a Merlot. The average price for a 750 ml bottle on WineSearcher.com is just under $2,000. When they ask if that's the case price, I quickly assure them it's for just one 750 ml bottle.

Now, I'm certainly not advocating that we should be drinking Merlot in that price range. What I am saying is that Merlot has suffered a much unearned and undeserved wrap as being an inferior wine.

At Colonial this month, we are asking customers to "Revisit Merlot." Here are just of a few of the many being promoted all month.

Cheers,

EMMOLO MERLOTNAPA VALLEY 2012Made in an explosively rich, blockbuster style. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by oodles of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit intertwined with hints of espresso and chocolate. Full-bodied and super-rich, but not overly extracted or astringent, this beautifully made, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal Merlot should win the hearts and minds of many California wine enthusiasts. It is the complete package – from aromatics to an impressive entry, a full, savory mid-palate, and a long finish.

$52.99Everyday $68.99

DUCKHORN MERLOTNAPA VALLEY 2012This wine showcases why Carneros Merlot grapes have always been an important part of this Napa Valley Merlot. Despite its smooth, velvety texture, there is an intensity that speaks to our love of structured, age-worthy Merlots. In the nose and on the palate, it is dominated by lovely layers of Black Doris plum, dark cherry, cocoa powder and nougat.

$39.99Everyday $62.99

REYNOLD'S FAMILY WINERY MERLOTSTAGS LEAP DISTRICT 2010Throw to the wayside your idea of a typical Merlot, which is what Steve Reynolds did. This single vineyard, 95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon is from a vineyard with international notoriety, known for producing big bold red wines. That being said, the wine picks up intense berry flavors, a jammy front and a smooth finish, all from the alluvial soil in which is it grown.

$29.99Everyday $39.99

STAGS LEAP MERLOTNAPA VALLEY 2012It is at once complex and approachable, opening with generous aromas of dark plum and bright red fruit, with enticing hints of clove and cinnamon throughout. Juicy red fruit flavors are effortlessly integrated with notes of caramel and savory spice that contribute depth to the polished palate. Smooth, velvety tannins and a refined texture give this Merlot a distinct level of sophistication while still being very approachable in its early years.

$27.99Everyday $37.99

KEENAN MERLOTNAPA VALLEY 2011It has been aged in 33% new French and American oak barrels for eighteen months. The resulting wine shows intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry and cassis. Complex nuances of cocoa and coffee bean emerge as the wine opens up. This is a "big" Merlot that will age for many years to come.
