i always dreamt of getting married on a beach, a relaxed affair with only the closest friends and family present. of

course, my wedding was nothing like my dream. our parents’ expectations and social commitments meant it

was an affair steeped in indian traditions – a three-day long celebration with the wedding ceremony in a garden (no water in sight!) and an unending line of guests, most of whom my husband and i didn’t know: they were ‘family friends’. don’t get me wrong, it was a beautiful celebration and we have very fond memories of it. but i still wonder how it would have been if i had followed by dreams of a beach wedding.

i would strongly suggest that if you have a dream for your big day, follow it. your wedding day is one that will stay with you for the rest of your life ... make sure it is a reflection of you and your love. elope and follow it up with a dream holiday or take a few friends and family overseas for a small but memorable celebration – if this is your dream, do it. our feature story in this edition gives you tips on how to plan an overseas or destination wedding as it is called in the industry as well as stories from two couples who broke away from tradition and did things a little differently for their big day.

Captured in this edition of Celebrate is the wedding day of daniel and Kate locking from newcastle, australia. The couple tied the knot in their hometown on may 14, 2011 at the elegant star of the sea Catholic Church. This was followed by reception at the award-winning bacchus restaurant, a heritage-listed newcastle landmark with a rich legacy that added to the wedding ambience.

The wedding day itself was an epic celebration of a couple crazy about each other. daniel and Kate involved their families too, which added to the unique qualities of this special day. They are both friendly, joyful people and this shone through their day. “They were so happy on their day and i think the photos show this,” says Jake Thomas, the lensman behind the stunning photographs from the day.

warmer and more predictable weather, a sense of fun and romance, fewer people and arrangements to manage and an opportunity to combine your special day with the holiday of a lifetime … a wedding abroad definitely

has its pros. yet, if your beloved nana cannot make it to the wedding, the whole affair might lose its sheen for you. Home or away, you will need to make the choice carefully.

if you do decide to get married abroad, the world is your oyster. literally! From the destination to the style of wedding, you can have it all with your budget being a deciding factor.

the nuts and boLts

one of the first things to do for any wedding, especially one overseas, is deciding on your budget. This will determine your destination, venue and everything else that follows.

when it comes to planning for a wedding abroad you have three options: organise it yourself, use a wedding planner experienced in overseas arrangements, or use a wedding travel specialist to tailor-make a wedding and honeymoon package to suit your specific needs and requirements.

if you choose to do it all yourself, you’ll need to source local information, apply for licenses, make travel and accommodation arrangements for the wedding party, organise a photographer ... the

list is long and exhausting. it is definitely not for everyone. involving an expert is a better option when you’re on unchartered territory in a new country.

wedding planners such as lavish events can either plan the whole wedding for you or, after an initial consultation, can put you on to a destination wedding specialist like anita gatley. depending on the scope of work, the services of a specialist like lavish events can cost between $5000 and $7000.

The third option is using the services of a wedding travel specialist. most travel agency chains have consultants that specialise in the weddings market, including Flight Centre, House of travel and mondo travel. “it takes a certain type of person to deal with what can be “emotional travel”,” warns anita gatley, who is herself a part of the travel managers group and has been in the industry for more than 20 years.

What can you exPect from a WeddIng traveL sPecIaLIst?

a good wedding travel specialist should be able alleviate all your concerns about distance. if possible, visit three or four agencies before choosing one you are most comfortable with.

in the first instance, a wedding travel specialist will help you zero in on a suitable destination and venue to suit your budget and requirements. once this is finalised they will organise the airfares, accommodation and transfers for you and your party.

Finer details of the wedding day itself are finalised between you and the wedding-co-ordinator from the chosen venue (most good overseas resort have specialist wedding co-ordinators). travel specialists generally continue to act as a liaison between you and the wedding co-ordinator to prevent any miscommunication. “There are also independent wedding planners who are not limited by the property they work for – companies such as wedded bliss in rarotonga or tadra weddings in Fiji,” adds anita.

since these agents specialise in group bookings and have a fantastic network, they can even broker good deals for you in the form of discounts and upgrades.

some travel agencies, including Flight Centre, also offer a wedding travel account facility. guests can contribute to this account and the collection can be spent on travel of your choice. anita gatley takes this bridal registry system a step further, “i charge an administration fee and the entire amount goes directly to the couple in cash rather than vouchers to be used for a future wedding. all i ask is that the wedding travel is booked through me.”

Saying i do on foreign land

It may not be for everyone, but an increasing number of Kiwi couples are choosing to nip overseas to tie the knot.

When it comes to overseas weddings, you have three options; organise it yourself, use a wedding planner or use a wedding travel specialist.

choosIng the destInatIon and venue

For the most part, this depends on your budget. other factors to consider are the type of wedding you want – a tropical beach or a castle in europe; the number of guests you are expecting; accessibility of the destination – think about where most of your guests are travelling from; the makeup of your group – is your old aunt comfortable with an 11-hour flight to bangkok or, if there are children in your party, an adult-only high-end resort is not quite right for you.

among the most popular overseas destinations for new Zealanders are Fiji and the Cook islands. “They offer great wedding packages, suit a variety of styles and budgets, and are legally an easier place to tie the knot,” says Karina rowling from Flight Centre.

another emerging wedding destination is Thailand, probably because of its accessibility to the rest of the world – guests from europe will find it easier to get there. although it does have more complicated legal requirements warns Karina.

talking to people like a wedding travel specialist who have experienced the destination and the venue will make choosing

easier. alternatively, get the opinion of friends and family who’ve visited the place.

among venues to talk about, anita’s picks include likuliku lagoon resort (a romantic retreat for someone with a healthy budget), malolo island resort (rustic in feel but doesn’t lack in luxury) and the outrigger in Fiji; The Cook island’s pacific resort & spa (a premier boutique hotel), muri beach Club (a privately owned, boutique adults-only property), The little polynesian, sea Change (featuring stunning villas with plunge pools and a lagoon backdrop), tamanu beach resort and aitutaki lagoon resort & spa (the only overwater bungalows in the Cook islands); seabreeze and Coconuts resort & spa in samoa; and le meridian tahiti and sofitel bora bora marara beach resort, the latter occupies its own island in this paradise destination.

When do you get the baLL roLLIng?

The answer to this question is unanimous from all our experts – the sooner you start planning and booking, the better. give yourself at least 12-18 months to plan your dream wedding abroad. “Flights can

be held for 11 months in advance and venues can be booked up to 18 months prior,” says anita. she adds that most properties require a non-refundable deposit and competition is tough with overseas couples also in the running.

besides, you will have to give your guests enough notice to plan and save funds or get good holiday deals.

the trIcky Issues

anita says that the most common issue she faces is that the couple is not on the same page. “one would like to travel overseas and the other would like to get married in new Zealand. i advise them that one of them will have to compromise – this may be the first of many in their married lives!”

travel arrangements for the wedding party can also be a stress for the bride and groom – here is where a travel agent comes in handy. mondo travel motueka’s Judith gearry says that getting a reservation and then getting responses from guests on time (before the deposit is due) can sometimes be a concern – giving your guests sufficient time to get organised may help.

what was suggested as a joke by a family member turned out to be a day they had always dreamt of and

guests still talk about it to this day. “i wouldn’t change a thing and would recommend it to anyone,” says sarah, who tied the knot with fiancé John bell in the sublime setting of rarotonga beach resort & spa.

The idea made perfect sense – a wedding and honeymoon all in one, a laid-back affair, barefoot on the beach, tropical location with nice warm weather ... it sounded like heaven to us. “besides we didn’t have a lot of family in new Zealand, so we said, “why not”.

“we would have been happy if even a few people came but were chuffed when our families and closest friends all decided to come.”

Their 40 guests paid their own way. “we planned the wedding a year in advance so everyone could save for it,” says sarah.

everyone took the same flight and stayed on for five nights. “it made everything so special, being able to see everyone before and after the wedding. it was fun to be on holiday as a large group – a really amazing feeling.”

They booked a wedding package through Flight Centre and were put in touch with a wedding

co-ordinator, who was very helpful and responded to the smallest query quickly. “i kept thinking something would go wrong on the day, but nothing did.

“my biggest challenge was finding the right dress, one that wouldn’t make me feel too hot on the day!”

lavish events’ nicky luis says not getting all the information or having all your questions answered is also common. again, working with a well-known planner or wedding travel specialist should help address this issue.

the eLoPIng brIde and groom

traditionally, eloping has been associated with trouble in paradise – an unplanned pregnancy, acceptance issues from families or similar. yet, there is something very romantic about running away and getting married in a different country.

if you want to elope, we suggest discussing it with your close friends and family beforehand so they don’t feel left out.

the LegaLItIes of It aLL

if you are getting married overseas it is important that you contact the marriage authorities in the country where you plan to marry and check their marriage laws and requirements. you don’t want to go through the entire ceremony, only to realise at the end of it all that it was not legal! your wedding travel specialist or planner can help you with this.

if you have married overseas and wish to confirm that your overseas marriage is valid in new Zealand, you may apply to the Family Court for a declaration as to the validity of the marriage. details are available on the department of internal affairs website (www.dia.govt.nz).

thIngs to keeP In mInd

Think of the guests – give them enough time and make sure they are •comfortable.

if you don’t like the options the wedding co-ordinators at the venue are giving •you, be prepared to spend more money and take suppliers with you. “i know of a cake that was bought a ticket on a plane to rarotonga,” says nicky.

saving money, really? The whole affair may end up costing you more than •a wedding in new Zealand – be prepared. reasons for this could vary from higher than expected food costs because of your menu choice to having more guests than you anticipated – everyone wants a holiday and your wedding seems the opportune time!

Holidaying with the extended family. do you really want your in-laws and all-•and-sundry to be a part of those special first days of your wedded bliss?

the idyllic setting of Koh samui (Thailand) seemed the perfect place for liz and Jarrod Kent to celebrate their love in marriage. it was the

place where Jarrod fell to his knees and asked liz to be his life partner.

“The beaches are gorgeous, it is cheap to get there and the shopping is amazing – it is such a fun holiday destination,” says liz. Koh samui is a special place for them and they wanted to enjoy their big day there with friends and family. “There is not many times that we all go away on holiday together.”

in fact being on holiday with friends and family was the most memorable part of their Thai wedding. “it gave our families an opportunity to get to know each other better and for us all to have fun and party in paradise for 10 days.”

liz and Jarrod chose a private villa on a secluded beach for their wedding. They visited the island paradise a year prior to the wedding to choose the venue and book a company that organises weddings. The day itself was perfect with a dash of the Thai culture in the form of a baby elephant to lead the groom and the groomsmen, traditional dancers and musicians, and an impressive fireworks display.

The planning of the wedding went without a hitch thanks to the wedding planner and efficient handling of travel and accommodation arrangements by anita gatley (travel managers group) for the entire wedding party. since the couple gave their guests a year’s notice, they had a reasonable turnout of 34. despite the notice, getting guests to confirm and make final arrangements with anita was the biggest challenge liz and Jarrod faced.

offering tips to other couples considering an overseas wedding, liz says, “give your guests sufficient notice, make sure the accommodation is within everyone’s means – a $500 per night room might be fine for you because it is your wedding but others might not be able to afford it, and because this might be an annual holiday for some of your guests, don’t set out a strict itinerary for everyday. give them some flexibility.”

Shades of pretty

taking inspiration from the runway, pastel shades are back with gusto for weddings. Think peaches and cream, lovely lilacs, pale shades of pink and blue, and cooling mint.

wedding planner emma newman shares some tips to get this theme right.

Think about the space and venue – too pastel, and it can get lost in a big space. •small details in soft colours won’t work in a big space either.

let the flowers in season guide you. Then, mix them up with lanterns, bunting and •fabrics for stunning effect. dipping candles can also look great with softer shades.

Theme the food around the colour – macarons, cocktails ... the sky is the limit.•

a classy affair

wild fun and hen’s nights are almost synonymous with each other. but not every bride wants a spirited affair and strippers. some prefer it classy. like chardonnay, cheese and something exquisite from Fish restaurant’s much-appreciated menu. with views of the waitameta Harbour as a backdrop, the night could be as magical as you want. add a hint of wild by starting of with a cocktail class at the hotel’s bellini bar.

you can extend the hen’s night into a whole weekend – head over to waiheke or book into a city hotel, get a spa treatment and spoil the bride silly. Hire a chef and host a private dinner party or take a harbour cruise – think about what your bride friend would like best.

determine your wedding personality

www.astrabridal.co.nz

Let your wedding gown say something about you – a reflection of your true self or a totally different persona. Astra Bridal’s Lori McPherson explains.

C ategorising our personalities is one way to deal with the dilemmas that you are facing about your wedding, including selecting that

perfect gown. no one fits perfectly in any one category but reading these types can crystalise your thinking about your style. sometimes it can be more about deciding what you don’t want rather than what you do.

The elegant bride

an evening wedding with finger foods and candlelight is what comes to mind when you think elegance. The dress for such a wedding will need to be avant garde and stylish. it should show off your stunning figure and have an element of risk to it. Quite often a backless gown is favoured by elegant brides. elaborate beading may highlight the gown, which typically will be in a stunning colour such as a blue or silver haze. your accessories will also be key to completing the look with panache.

The classic bride

Formal or semiformal, this wedding is steeped in traditions. The gown will lean towards more formal aspects, a cathedral or chapel train and beaded embroidery. The colour is likely to be in the traditional white or ivory spectrum. lace and pearls can make this look all the more timeless and classic. The gown will be tasteful, elegant and have tailored lines and structure to it.

The romantic bride

Have you always dreamt about your day? when you think about your special day, do you imagine lots of flowers, flowing fabric and fairy lights? it could be formal or informal, the gown of such a romantic bride is matched to these aspirations. it should be feminine, perhaps frilly and heavily embellished, but it will most certainly be the key feature of the wedding. Common factors are soft fabrics (organza, tulle) and flowers and beading. The gown could also have some colour in the fabric (soft white or blue) or in the detailing.

The minimalist bride

For such a style, the structure of the gown will be the all important factor to creating the style you wish to create.

it will need to be an elegant, simplistic design with very little embellishment on it. The gown should mold to your body and the tailoring will achieve marvelous feats for your figure.

The casual or natural bride

are you thinking of an outdoor affair at the beach or garden? if a relaxed, simple atmosphere is what you hope to achieve, your gown may need to lean towards something lightweight – taffeta or chiffon – with a simple, understated design. it should be easy to move in. This style is perfect if you have an overseas wedding planned.

The vixen bride

you have a wonderful curvaceous body and you want to show it off. The style of your wedding will be fun and flirty – lots of hamming it up for the camera. For your gown, think figure-hugging mermaid gowns. accessories will also be really important to your outfit as they will really allow your personality to shine through. because vixen brides aren’t shy, they will not hesitate to don a strong colour for their gown – black, red or sumptuous champagne.

The sophisticated bride

stylish is the key word for your wedding. trends are important in both bridal and your event styling. you will take the lead from new york, london or wherever you can gain inspiration. you gown will be hot off the press for style and you will know exactly what the world’s most reknowned designers are planning for this season. because you are poised, you really know how to carry a gown. The cut of your gown is the most important thing to consider when selecting your gown.

The vintage bride

laces and simplicity of shapes dictate the gown of the vintage bride. you have an eye for detail as it takes some perserverance to get this type of wedding right. you can remodel an actual vintage gown or you can do a modern take on the vintage fabric in a current style. location is key for the vintage bride and sets the scene for photographs and your gown style.

anna schimmel at 2012 nZ fashion Week

romantic and very feminine, anna schimmel’s collection yet again paid homage to the hidden princess inside every bride. Her opulent couture collection at the 2012 nZ Fashion week was theatrical, extravagant and sophisticated.

The gowns featured her trademark luxurious fabrics sourced from the latest european collections. richly textured French laces and subtle beading contrasted beautifully with soft english tulle in a matt, light ivory palette and accentuated the drama of the dress. dramatic silhouettes featured highly detailed décolletages – sheer, lacy straps, shrugs and high necks – and floaty, layered skirts.

a La robe at 2012 nZ fashion Week

This season a la robe created clever layering of soft embroidered tulle, silk organza, lace and cashmere. pastel hues find their way into bridal gowns with a la robe’s collection featuring slips worn under wrap skirts with nepalese cashmere cardigans – all in soft shades. “some pieces were hand-dyed in vintage tea, pale green, champagne and the brands own a la robe pink; a pale pink with a hint of grey,” says elizabeth soljak of a la robe.

The collection featured subtle yet bold detail – a white silk satin halter dress was finished with a green sash, embellishment with vintage handmade lace and vintage diamante straps and brooches.

elizabeth admires the movements of fabrics and utilises the mixture of textures and weight to create each ensemble.

Smile – you’re getting married!

★★

White is a traditional colour for weddings and these days that extends to teeth. Cosmetic teeth whitening is an increasingly common procedure so it’s no surprise that brides and grooms are getting in on the act. After all,

“your wedding photos are for life,” as Charmaine McFarlane of Sparklewhite Teeth points out.McFarlane, who operates Sparklewhite Teeth in Auckland and several other centres in New Zealand, says people often

don’t realise how discoloured their teeth have become until they see themselves in photos. “All sorts of things can cause tooth discolouration including smoking, age, some medications, consumption of tea, coffee and red wine, and plain old genetics.”

McFarlane says teeth whitening is safe, makes you look healthier and gives you the confidence to smile more, “which is important if you’re about to get married and have lots of photos taken of yourself ”.

Sparklewhite’s treatment involves shining an LED cold light on teeth which have had a special gel applied. The gel reacts under the light and removes the discolouration. The procedure takes about an hour and is so relaxing that it’s not uncommon for McFarlane’s clients to fall asleep.

Generally, a single treatment is sufficient to lighten teeth by six to eight shades, although people with badly discoloured teeth might require a second treatment to achieve their desired result.

McFarlane says teeth whitening is popular with both brides and grooms, who can have the treatment together, sitting side by side. She recommends having it done at least a week before the wedding day, or a month prior if two treatments are likely to be needed.

Normally clients have the treatment at Sparklewhite’s Remuera clinic but McFarlane also offers an in-home service for groups such as a bride and her bridesmaids. She says a teeth whitening treatment makes a great engagement or wedding present and gift vouchers are available. Call Matt or Neil on 09 529 9359, or visit www.sparklewhite.co.nz for more information.
