Nickel to the rescue

There is some agreement in the viewthat the United States is running out ofnatural gas.

However, one of the bnght spots is thepotential for producing synthetic naturalgas from coal in plants large enough toconvert 75,000 tons of coal into a billioncubic feet of gas daily and nickel makesit possible.

A Synthane pilot plant in Pennsylvania

employs a cluster of Type 304chromiumnickel stainless steel tubesthat are flame sprayed with a 42 per centnickel -58 percent aluminium alloy on theoutside.

This pilot facilty has successfully usedthe nickel catalystcoated tubes forcont;nucus opei'.ations over a period offour months.

Currenfly, mining is confined to aimited number of eves and working

p'aces, however this comfortab'yproduces some 4000 tons of "muck"daUy, and more on demand.

The major mining method emp'oyed isnco's adaptation of post-piHar mining.This permits the remova' of a majorportion of piHars a'ong with the stope,a big pius efficiency-wise. An importantfeature of this type of mining is theincreased mobiflty of mechanizedequipment.

Uphoe driHing from stope wagons isused effective'y in stopes and rockbotingand screening are standard.

Eight stope wagons are kept busydriUing ahead of the b'asting, and inaddition three driU jumbos are used fordev&opment work. Seven 5T8, three5T4, and two 5T2 oad-hauLdumpmachines keep the "muck" moving.

The ore is crushed underground toabout six-inch size by a crusher ocatedbetween 1880 and 1950 eves. Thecrushed ore is conveyed to oadingpockets on 1950 eve which feed onto aarge be't conveyor on 2060 eve, fromthere to a oading hopper, and finaHyinto the 10-ton skips. From surface theore is hau'ed about three and a ha'f mitesby 35-ton Terex trucks to the Levackmine for further crushing and mffling.

Set among the wooded hills of the north range, Coleman's 227-toot-high headtrame, with itsfunctional office and ancillary buildings, is an attractive landmark in that area. The uppersection of the head frame houses the Koeppe hoists that transport men, ore and materialbetween surface and underground.

Joe Mu/a joined Inco in 1952, one year after leaving his birthplace of Roccella Jonica in Italy.He works in the winding shop at Copper Cliff. A keen spectator of all sports, Joe's youngerdays included activities on the soccer field as left fullback for his home town team. With Joeare his wife Gemma, and their family of Ines, 17, and Frank, 12.

SHUTDOWN

MAINTENANCEMen were busy working throughout Inco facilities during the three-

week shutdown as they performed maintenance chores planned for theperiod. Approximately 500 men were involved in about 225 projects at theCopper Cliff smelter and refineries. The work ranged from rebuilding No. 9flash furnace-a project involving bricklayers, carpenters, welders andmaintenance mechanics-to changing valves on utility lines.

The mines department completed 105 projects with a work force of justless than 500 men. Their projects ranged from dismantling skip hoist drumsat Frood No. 3 shaft to regular inspection of fire fighting and electricalequipment.

At Port Colborne, 90 men completed 10 projects during the mid-summer break.

Memoriesrevived

A flash-back to 1942 and the war years, withGladys Rinta mantully handling a tugger hoistin the Creighton No. 3 shaft rockhouse.

"It was like jumping back 31 years inhistory, said Mrs. Gladys Rinta, one ofa group of ladies who visited the CopperCliff North mine on one of the minesdepartment's wives' tours that wererecently started.

For Gladys, the tour revived nostalgicmemories of the Second World War when,in 1942, she joined Inco, donnedcoveralls and jaunty cap and took up aposition beside a picking belt in therockhouse at Creighton number 7 shaft.

"As much as I wanted to, I never didget underground while I worked at themine," she said, "at last I've fulfilled myambition."

Rinta, and mother of Merv, Eric, andNorm - a driller at the North mine -Gladys graduated from the picking beltto a tugger hoist controlled tripperconveyor which distributed ore to threebins.

"I had to make sure that the three binswere evenly loaded," she explained."All went well till one day after a quicktrip to check the skips I slipped, twistedmy ankle, and couldn't make it back tothe tugger hoist. The tripper conveyorcontinued its steady flow of muck into analready filled bin and soon the stuff wasoverflowing all over the place and theend result was a completely pluggedrock house."

"I can't think why," she continued with

a twinkle in her eye, "but shortly afterthat I was transferred to the paint shopat Copper Cliff."

Gladys terminated her venture intoman's domain in 1944 after a session ofpressing drill bits in the steel shop atFrood mine. "My family was growing upwithout me," she said, "it was time to go."

New tanksat 'Cliff

One of the two bunker 'C' oil tanksunder construction at Copper Cliff hasreached the roof plate stage. The tanksare 125 feet in diameter, 30 feet high andtogether will hold three and a half milliongallons. Bunker 'C' will be used asfurnace fuel.

A viscose fluid, it requires specialheating arrangements to maintain atemperature at which it will flow. Eachtank will be encircled by an earth bermto contain oil in the unlikely event of aleak or spill.

Thirty-one years later, Gladys Rinta on awives' tour at Copper Cliff North mine, finallyrealizing her ambition to go underground.

An initial two-day course in photographs?conducted recently at the HaileyburySchool of Mines campus of NorthernCollege was attended by Copper Cliffsafety department visual aids designerRichard Urysz, of Stobie mine.

The course was designed specificallyfor personnel of the Mines AccidentPrevention Association of Ontario, toprepare them for expanding roles in minesafety instruction.

Remember when?Gliding smoothly and silently over good

paved roads, many people forget thegood old days" when most roads were

hard packed and pot-holed gravel, andarrival by automobile was heralded wellin advance by the appearance of a slowmoving dust cloud. According to theTriangle of October 1939, relief fromdust and mud started in the fall of thatyear when men and equipment moved in

to tear up the travelways and lay asubstantial sub-layer of slag. Localoldtimers will probably recall vividmemories of noise and blocked driveways- but if they can't, the 34-year-oldpicture above will possibly jog theirmemories. Taken from the same spotrecently, the picture below illustrates thechanges that have occurred in the interim.

A cushion of zinc

One of those interesting and vita'maintenance procedures that keep themany crushers at nco mines and mills inregu'ar operation is the zincing of crusherbow's, heads and manfles to increasetheir resistance to the day poundingthey receive as they crush the hard nicke'ores.

The space between the iner and thebow' or manfle (about three quarters ofan inch), is packed with zinc to act as acushion during the crushing action.The zinc forms an impact cushion whenore is in the crushing cavities and thishe'ps to prevent the crusher from iterallypounding itse'f to pieces in short order.

Zinc is a resihent meta', ighter thanead and of a fairy high impact strength.

At the Carabelle Mill when a bow ineror head mante is ready for repacementdue to wear or cracking, that section isremoved to the repair bay and a sparepart installed in its pace.

At the repair bay the worn section isdismanted, thoroughy ceaned, the odzinc savaged and a new manganesestee iner installed. That is when thezincing comes in.

Whie the crusher part is being ceanedand the iner repaced, about 1200pounds of zinc is meted. Using anoverhead crane and a arge ade, themoten zinc is poured through a funne

There are six standard and sixcrosshead crushers in the CarabelleMill crushing pant which means that onan average there is a bow or mante infor zincing about once a week, and nowonder. During the month of June thisbattery of crushers daiy reduced about27,000 tons of ore to size

In at east two areas, Tony Scep-pacerqua of Port Colborne is a prettysmooth operator. Tony is a fuM-timelift truck operator at the Port Colbornenickel refinery and part-time disc jockeyon radio station CHOW in Welland.

Since 1968 Tony has been producingprograms in Italian for the 85,000 peopleof Italian origin in the Niagara district.It was a tough struggle in the early daysto create enough interest and obtain therequired number of sponsors to make itfinancially sound, but Tony has per-severed and it's a tribute to his ingenuitythat today he has over 30 sponsors.

Tony produces two programs, each twohours in length. The shows are heard

every Sunday at 1470 on the radio dialin the Niagara Peninsula, the first at10 am. the second at7p.m. The fourhours of predominantly Italian music -although Tony does take requests andwill play anything from Bach to rock -are usually planned on the precedingThursday evening.

Tony started at the refinery in April1951 in the anode department. Two yearslater he transferred to the shipping gangin the yard department and has beenoperating a lift truck there since then.Among the biggest boosters are his wifeRosina and their three children, Albert,age 19, and the twins, Diana and Rosia-maria, age 13.

Eagerly anticipating the flight to Thunder Bay, part of the 56-person tour boards theDC-9 let chartered for the occasion.

Early on a hazy, humid July morning,56 people climbed aboard a DC-9 jetchartered by Inco to travel to ThunderBay. Their mission? To explore livingconditions there and job opportunities atthe company's newly-openedShebandowan mine and mill complex60 miles to the west.

The group - all experienced minersand most accompanied by their wives -had shown keen interest in working atShebandowan and were given thisopportunity to visit the area by theemployee relations department.

After breakfast in Thunder Bay, theyboarded buses for a tour of the city andthe ride to the mine on the shore ofLower Shebandowan Lake. Uponreturning to Thunder Bay, they met withlocal real estate representatives andwere at their leisure until the charterjet departed at midnight.

Mans first comprehensive inventory ofthe natural resources he requires forsurvival began on July 23, 1972, whenthe Earth Resources Technology Satellite,EATS was launched by the U.S. into a

sun synchronous polar orbit aroundthe earth on an 18 day repetitive cycle.

EATS is in orbit 569 miles above tfleearth. Remote sensors on the spacecrafttransmit electrical images to NASAreceiving stations in Alaska, California,and Maryland. Images are also receivedby antenna in Prince Albert,Saskatchewan.

With an ability to detect various spectraof light including infrared, EATS willallow scientists to monitor - on acontinuing basis - any countrysagricultural production, water pollutionproblems, forests, glaciers, volcanoesand natural disasters.

Looking at us

area last April by EATS when most ofthe lakes were still ice covered.However, it is so clear that many ofour lakes and rivers and othertopographical landmarks can be easilyidentified.

Lakes such as Wahnapitae, WhitsonRamsey Nepewassi Windy KukagamiBarlow and the West Arm of LakeNipissing are easily located.

The largest fresh water island in theworld Manitoulin Island is also includedin the photo. Its shape is changed alittle by the ice between its north shoreand the mainland.

Returning to the Sudbury area we findthat the lakes shown in the photo appearwhite. Using a magnifying glass on thisphoto, it is possible to pick out the outlineof the Sudbury basn the scar that isconsidered to mark the impact of amighty meteorite that zapped in fromouter space about two thousand mllionyears ago.

It was because of this crater that twogroups of astronauts visited the Sudburyarea prior to their journeys to the moon.They came to see the shatter-cones andthe other geological phenomena that canonly be found in an impact area.

Space age scientists have recognizedour area as a unique geological spot onthis ancient planet.

The tip of the arrow on the photographlocates the Copper Cliff complex.

During July 17 employees were re-warded for suggestions that proved tobe effective.

Glen Butcher, a maintenance mechanicin the cooling and casting building, cameup with a simple but practical suggestionthat netted him $375. Glen proposedwelding two sections of flat bar to thebottom rails in the matte casting mouldsto prevent distortion caused by heat, itworked beautifully.

A cottrell operator, Armand Rousselle'sbrain wave was worth $250 to him Itextended the life of teflon rapping rodsthat were previously discarded when theybecame deeply scarred.

Allan Seery of the Copper Ckff smelteris $120 richer for suggesting a grizzlyat No 21 conveyor.

At the Copper Cliff nickel refinery

Melvin Roberts picked up $50 for hissuggestion to convert thickener air purgesystems to water purge.

At the smelter Yvon Savole and StefanLemega received $30 for their Joint sug-gestion to put hinges on floor panelsnear the roasters. Raino Kainulainenproposed identification plates to showthe source of high voltage power andwas awarded $25. Anthony De Benedetnetted $20 for suggesting stands forconveyor maintenance, Andre Hamiltonwon $15 for suggesting drain holes atwashroom doors and Arnold Chabot got$10 for his idea of spotlights at conveyorchutes.

In matte processing, Ken Armstrongcame up with a method of replacingroaster spray valves with blank flangesthat netted him $25, and Phillip Pharandpicked up $20 for devising a safety catchfor baghouse doors

At the oxygen plant Garry Bradley wasa double winner with his idea for piperevisions to reduce rupture disc failure,worth $35, and the use of a container forsate disposal of liquid oxygen, a $25award. And also at that location BohumelKipp received $30 for suggesting an im-proved type of valve wrench.

And this month we're happy to wel-come three Port Colborne members tothe winners' circle. Glenda Lojek, a junior high schoolteacher from Lynchburg, Va., was notifiedof her selection Wednesday, August 1,as she signed the guest book with herhusband, Jan.

She received a Canadian dollar mintedin nickel to mark the centenary of theentry of Prince Edward Island intoConfederation and a safety cap used onthe tour as souvenirs of the occasion.

Tours of Inco's facilities in Copper Cliffcontinued through the shutdown andwill cease September 3. Guided by sixfull-time Inca employees, the tourshighlight the Clarabelle Open Pit, theCopper Cliff North mine hoist room, the1,250-foot superstack and the tailingsreclamation area.

The lyrical beauty of Capistrano haslong been extolled in word and song and,according to all reports, is the favouriteresort spa for the swank swallow set.

Like all popular gathering placeshowever, overcrowding sets in and thetourist, feathered or otherwise, startslooking elsewhere.

We dont know if that has happened atCapistrano or whether this is an ornitho-logical LIP program, but we do knowthat the swallows have come back, not toCapistrano, but to the Copper Clifftailings disposal area I

Along the sheer 30 foot high wall of aninactive and reclaimed section of thetailings area several hundred cliffswallows have taken up residence andtheir nest building gives the face theresemblance of a Swiss cheese.

Inco agriculturist Tom Peters proudlypoints out that this is further proof thatnatures life cycle, the eco-cycle, isreturning to this area which has beentransformed from dusty wasteland intoseveral hundred acres of parkiand.

Some 50 yards from the top of this wallof tailings is a large area of fine tallgrasses which attracts and harboursmyriads of insects. This is the swallowsmain food supply and traffic from thegrassland to the nest is quick andconstant.

Other meadow birds such as bobolinksand sparrows are also returning andhawks have been seen in the areasearching the fields for mice, the first ofthe animals to return and take upresidence. Muskrat and fox have alsobeen sighted.

One fascinating aspect of the Rye OnThe Rocks project has been theopportunity to observe at first hand howarable soil is formed.

It has been said that the world lives on,or from, the top six inches of topsoil.In the natural state, nature, by blendingall decaying matter and trace elementsfrom air and water, takes about 100 yearsto build just one inch of topsoill

A recent check of the tailings area thatwas seeded in 1955, where tall stronggrasses and young trees now abound,shows quite clearly the development ofat least one-eighth of an inch of finetopsoil. This is most encouraging to theagricultural department and confirmstheir basic philosophy that with a littleassist from man, nature will gladly takeover and rebuild our good earth.

Sudbury district fans had a goodchance recently to get the facts first handwhen they were treated to a fuN day offree style sparring (kumite), and formalpre-set exercises (kata), at the Sudburylnco Club. The third annual NorthernOntario Karate-Do Revival, hosted bythe Sudbury Goju-Ryu Karate Dojounder the direction of chief instructorBob Dalgleish was held here this year.

The Copper Cliff Minor BaseballLeague, now in its third active year,hosted the Northern Ontario Little Leaguebaseball tournament in July.

From the opening on Saturday, July 14,to the final out on Thursday, July 19, theresults of good organization were evidentand the double round robin series,involving ten teams, was completed withhardly a hitch.

Two games were played each day atNickel Park in Copper Cliff and a goodcrowd attended. Games were six inningsof heads-up baseball and were wellhandled by the officials.

Gerry Mills from the warehouse andGerry Bertrand from the pay officehandled the Copper Cliff entry whichmade a very creditable showing withthree wins and two losses. This is theirsecond appearance in Little Leagueplaydowns and indications are that thebig win is only a year or two away.

Winner of the tournament was the teamfrom Rouyn who beat out Chelmsford inthe finals. They now move on to ThunderBay for the all-Ontario finals. TheCanadian tournament this year is to beheld in British Columbia.

Terry Jackson is president of theCopper Cliff Minor Baseball League andBill Carlyle, safety supervisor at Clara-belle, is secretary-treasurer. Much of thecredit for the success of the tournamentgoes to Terry. Bill and their committeewho, among their many other tasks,arranged billeting for close to 100 of thesome 150 young players whose agesranged from nine to twelve.

The local league consists of four teamsand is supported by the Copper CliffLegion. Bill Carlyle says that with thekeen interest shown this year they willlikely go to six teams next year.

Scanning the softball circuitWhile support for and interest in shift

league softball is still high at Copper Cliffand Frood-Stobie, other lnco areasaround the Sudbury district are experi-encing a cyclical decline in the old fervor.This has happened in the past and isusually followed by a strong upsurge inthe game.

The copper refinery and iron ore planthave no official entries in any league thisyear. Levack, Creighton and Garson,while not operating mine shift leaguesas in the past, do have entries in otherleagues, and this would seem to indicatethat the spark is still there waiting to berekindled.

LEVACK

Levack has two teams entered in theOnaping Falls Shift Softball League andthere is naturally keen rivalry between theInco and Falco entries.

"There's been quite a change for thebetter," Mrs. Kainola said. "Things aremuch, much better now."

The first of 21564 cubic yards ofconcrete used in the construction of the

superstack was poured on June 1, 1970and pouring was completed less thanthree months later. It came ''on stream"August 21, 1972.

Gardeners throughout the area haveechoed Mrs. Kainola's views on the effectof the superstack, which minimizesground concentrations of waste fromthe smelter,

Good weather, excellent organization, and the usualtop-notch conditions at the ldylwylde Golf and Country Cluball combined to make the annual Inco golf tournament arip-roaring success.

A field of 53 teams whacked and putted their way aroundthe 18-hole course, and here and there some loud mutteringcould be heard, once when otherwise mild and jovial RoyMaud took a practice swing and nicked his ball for atwo-foot drive, and again when Murray Nelson took a mightyswing to get out of the rough and wrapped a six ironaround a tree that shuffled a little too close.
