Escobar Visits Folwell Performing Arts Magnet On Monday, April 17, Minnesota Twins infielder, Eduardo Escobar, visited Folwell School Performing Arts Magnet to speak fifth and sixth grade students. Escobar spoke about the importance of education as well as his experiences as professional baseball player. Twins players are always eager to engage with community members, and Escobar was excited to speak with local youth to help serve as a positive role model. “Study, thank your parents and respect your classmates,” said Escobar, he finished the talk by saying that if each student put those three things together, they will be able to accomplish their dreams. Minnesota Twins Jackie Robinson Day Essay Contest In conjunction with the Twins’ annual literacy program, the Twins held a Reading is Powerful essay contest in 22 schools throughout Twins Territory. As part of the contest, students were asked to write about a time they overcame a challenge by using one of Jackie Robinson’s Nine Values. The Twins received 143 total submissions. 15 students were selected as winners by the Twins Reading is Powerful committee, which is comprised of front office staff, local teachers and community members. Winners were recognized on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15 at Target Field in an on-field pregame ceremony where they received an MVP certificate. Thank you to all students who participated in the essay contest and helped the Twins to celebrate the legacy of Jackie Robinson. Twins Wives Donate Sporting Equipment to Local Youth Each year the Twins Wives Organization works to help families and children in need. This spring, the Wives organization donated sports equipment to local schools and organizations in Twins Territory. Seven elementary schools and the Crescent Cove organization received equipment for soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and more. Each donation, from the Twins Wives Organization, included over 100 balls and other equipment that schools can use in gym classes to promote a healthy, active lifestyle in youth across the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. “The equipment will go a long way to ensuring our students have what they need to really partake in the art of Physical Education,” said Delon Smith, Principal at Jenny Lind Elementary. Heart of Diversity Piñata Party On Thursday, April 27th, the Minnesota Twins helped sponsor the annual American Heart Association “Diversity at Heart Piñata Party.” This fundraiser featured guest speakers, music and a piñata auction to raise money for the American Heart Association. “The Piñata Party is a celebration of life,” said Aida Pinero, “the Minnesota Twins have been involved in this unique celebration from the planning to logistics, participation and support. We thank the Minnesota Twins family for always opening their heart, mind and soul into our diverse community.” Spotlight Player Profile Jorge Polanco Born: July 5, 1993 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic Position: SS Height: 5'11" Weight: 200 Bats: Switch Throws: Right MLB Debut: June 26, 2014 Twins infielder Jorge Polanco signed with Minnesota a day after his 16th birthday in 2009. He went on to make his major league debut in 2014 at just 20 years and 356 days old, becoming the youngest Twin to debut since Joe Mauer in 2004. After splitting much of the 2016 season between Minnesota and Triple-A Rochester, Polanco joined the Twins for the final time on July 30 and ranked third among rookies in hits (63), fourth in batting average (.288) and tied for fifth in doubles (12) and RBI (23) through the season’s final two months.
