MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Offense leads Wings to sweep of RailRiders Rochester Red Wings– 4/15/15

MOOSIC, PA - Josmil Pinto and Eric Fryer each went 4-for-5 and the Rochester Red Wings scored four runs in the sixth and five in the ninth to sweep the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with an 11-6 win Wednesday morning at PNC Field.

Fryer drove in four runs, two in each of the big innings for Rochester (5-1). Eight of nine players drove in a run for the Red Wings and seven collected an RBI. Four players scored twice.

The Wings trailed by as many as three runs, 5-2, after Scranton/WB chased starter Alex Meyer in the fourth inning. The RailRiders (2-5) plated five runs on Meyer, all earned, on seven hits (one home run) and five walks with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. He has walked 11 batters in 8.2 innings through two starts this season.

The score remained 5-2 until the sixth when a seemingly harmless RBI fielder's choice by Reynaldo Rodriguez kept the inning alive. Rodriguez beat out an attempted double play that would have ended the inning. Instead, James Beresford followed with a walk, Jose Martinez singled home a run, Argenis Diaz walked to load the bases and Fryer produced a go-ahead two-run single to give Rochester its first lead of the day.

The Wings held the advantage for exactly one batter, the final out in the top of the sixth. Stephen Pryor had worked 1.1 scoreless innings before allowing a solo home run to Ramon Flores, his second of the day, which tied the game at 6-6. The home run ended a scoreless stretch of 17.0 innings by the Red Wings bullpen to begin the season.

A Scranton/WB error started the Rochester offense in the ninth inning. After Aaron Hicks went down looking to begin the frame, Eddie Rosario reached on the error. He moved to third on a Pinto single and scored on a Danny Ortiz base hit. Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single and after a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, Martinez and Diaz drew bases loaded walks to give the Wings some breathing room. That prompted a pitching change and Fryer greeted the new pitcher with a two-run single to cap a five-run inning.

A.J. Achter pitched the final 1.2 innings perfectly with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

The three-game sweep of Scranton/WB is the first by the Red Wings in Moosic, PA since August 12-14, 2000. The 5-1 start is the best by a Rochester squad since 2009. That team also started 5-1 but lost the next eight games and finished four games under .500 at season's end.

Next up: LHP Taylor Rogers starts for the Wings when they open a four-game series at Pawtucket on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

Next Home Game: Fri. April 24 vs. Syracuse (Nationals) at 7:05 p.m.

Duffey and Gonzales Lead Lookouts to Fifth Straight Win Chattanooga Lookouts– 4/15/15

A strong outing by starting pitcher Tyler Duffey, and clutch hitting by Mike Gonzales, led the Chattanooga Lookouts (5-1) to a 4-3 victory over the Birmingham Barons (2-4) on Opening Day at AT&T Field. The win extends the team's winning streak to a league high five games.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, score tied at three, Gonzales stepped up to the plate with a runner at third and two outs against Barons' pitcher Nolan Sanburn (L, 0-1). After a called strike the first baseman singled on a groundball to rightfield to plate Levi Michael and give the Lookouts the 4-3 lead.

Before Gonzales' late inning heroics the Lookouts were in command of the ballgame, up three runs entering the top of the eighth inning. Duffey continued his hot start to the season by extending his scoreless streak to 13.2 innings. The righty has only allowed six hits on the season and has struck out a league-high 18 batters so far this year. Dallas Gallant (W, 1-0) relieved the team's number one starter in the eighth and Zach Jones (S, 1) earned the save after striking out the side in the ninth.

Adam Brett Walker II spurred Chattanooga's offense with a RBI single in the fifth and a monster solo shot in the seventh and Michael tacked on the other Lookouts run on a RBI double.

Tim Anderson and Jacob May combined to drive in all three runs for Birmingham and starting pitcher Myles Jaye only allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings.

Tomorrow the two team's return for game two of the series on Thirsty Thursday. Right-hander Jose Berrios (1-0, 1.42) is on the mound for Chattanooga against fellow righty Mike Recchia (0-0, 5.40). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.

Miguel Sano looking to bring power to Chattanooga Lookouts Chattanooga Times Free Press– 4/15/15

Third baseman Miguel Sano isn't the fastest member of the Chattanooga Lookouts or the most consistent at the plate.

Yet when Sano connects with a pitch, he likely will send it farther than anybody else.

"Sano probably has the most power in our organization," Minnesota Twins player development director Brad Steil said. "He was out for about 18 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so we're hoping he can get back on track and knock some of that rust off and continue to develop. When he played in Double-A two years ago, he hit .235, but he did hit some home runs, and he also has a really strong arm at third base."

The Lookouts (4-1) are scheduled to play their Southern League home opener tonight at 7:15, when they welcome the Birmingham Barons to AT&T Field.

Sano, a 6-foot-4, 260-pounder from San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, was signed by the Twins in 2010. Despite last year's absence, he entered this season as the No. 12 overall prospect in the minors according to MLB.com and No. 13 according to Baseball America.

His star power was established in 2013, when he hit a combined .280 with 35 home runs and 103 RBIs between Fort Myers in the high Single-A Florida State League and New Britain (Conn.) in the Double-A Eastern League.

"I want him to be healthy every day," Lookouts manager Doug Mientkiewicz said. "He is talented enough to where if he is on the field every day, he will perform. He leads by example, and when he was out last year, I didn't miss the 30 homers and I didn't miss the 100 RBIs. I missed the fact that he held his teammates accountable."

Said Sano: "It's been hard to go through one year when you don't play ball. It was difficult for me having to think about that, but I am OK right now."

Sano had some company within the Twins organization as to a frustrating 2014. Current Lookouts center fielder Byron Buxton, MLB.com's top prospect in the minors, suffered two wrist injuries and a concussion last year and played just 31 games.

"It's always great to play with Byron," Sano said. "He's a great player and a great person. I love to watch him play, because he loves baseball. I'm looking forward to playing again with all my friends."

A new year has brought a new start for Sano, who homered to center field in last Thursday's opener in Montgomery but went just 3-for-17 (.176) in the five-game series. It also has brought a new locale, with Sano giving an early thumbs-up to Chattanooga.

"It's a pretty good city," he said. "I like it. I like being here downtown, and it's better than New Britain. It's so much better."

Tampa knocks off the Miracle, 3-1, in extra frames Fort Myers Miracle – 4/15/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 15, 2015) - The Tampa Yankees scored a pair of runs in the top of the eleventh inning to outlast the Fort Myers Miracle, 3-1, at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday night. After two scoreless frames in the ninth and tenth in a 1-1 tie, Miracle reliever Alex Muren allowed a lead-off single to Mark Payton to start the eleventh. Tyler Wade then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Payton up to second base. Muren (0-1) exited the game after walking Vicente Conde. Brian Gilbert took over on the mound and served up a 2-0 pitch to Mike Ford that was driven off the wall in right center, scoring Payton. Gilbert then walked Matt Snyder to bring up Kyle Higashioka. On an 0-1 pitch, Higashioka hit a chopper to third base. Goodrum lept up and grabbed the ball, tagged third to retire Ford, but Higashioka beat the throw to first to allow another Yankee run to score, 3-1. Tampa called on Conor Mullee to close the door. Mullee faced four batters and retired the side to record the save. The Miracle wasted a splendid start from Twins No. 4 prospect Kohl Stewart. Over a career-high eight innings, Stewart scattered eight hits and two walks while fanning three. Recording 14 outs on the ground, Stewart left the game by stranding the potential go-ahead run at third base and striking out Vicente Conde.

The Yankees only run off Stewart came in the fifth inning. Ericson Leonora led off with a single into center, but was caught stealing by Miracle catcher Mitch Garver. Then, Claudio Custodio was struck by a Stewart fastball, but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice hit into by Payton. With two out and a runner at first, Stewart lost control of a pitch to Wade and Payton moved to second on a wild pitch. After working a full count, Wade dropped a single into left and Payton raced home for a 1-0 Tampa lead. Fort Myers answered in the bottom of the inning, bringing in an unearned run against Yankees starter Rookie Davis. Aderling Mejia reached on a fielding error by second baseman Angelo Gumbs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Marcus Knecht then beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jason Kanzler tallied his first RBI of the season with a deep fly ball to center field that allowed Mejia to tag up and score from third, 1-1. Tampa's bullpen held the Miracle at bay the rest of the game. Luis Niebla tossed two scoreless frames and Andury Acevado escaped a jam unscathed in the eighth inning for a clean inning. Evan Rutckyj tossed the ninth and tenth without issue to earn the win. Rutckyj (1-0) surrendered just one hit and struck out one. The Miracle (3-4) look to split the series with the Yankees on Thursday at Hammond Stadium for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Aaron Slegers (1-0) is set to take the hill for the Miracle. Fans can take advantage of half price domestic draft beer through the seventh inning with the first Thirsty Thursday of the season. Gates open at 6 p.m.
