What is the difference between a certificate program and an academic degree?UArts certificate programs offer concentrated subject matter that can be completed in less time than an academic degree. You will walk away with skills you can use immediately.
What can I expect to gain after earning a certificate?Completing a certificate program conveys more than just a mastery of a specific knowledge or skill. It demonstrates to current and future employers your seriousness about professional advancement and your commitment to continued development.
Who teaches the certificate courses?Our certificate courses are taught by talented, working art and design professionals – some of whom are University faculty. All work within the professional fields they teach.
Who may apply for a certificate program?Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent may apply. A bachelor’s degree is helpful but not necessary.
How long does it take to complete a certificate program?Certificate programs vary in length. Many can be completed within an academic year. Of course, you can take classes to fit your schedule.
I work during the day. Can I take classes in the evening?Yes! All certificate programs are offered in the evenings to accommodate those who work 9 to 5 jobs.
When can I start a certificate program?You can start any certificate program any semester.
How do I apply?Complete the downloadable application form (cs.uarts.edu/ce). Submit it with any required supporting materials and a $100 fee. If you are denied acceptance to the program, you will be refunded $75. Applications are accepted year-round for all certificate programs.

Do I receive an actual certificate?Yes. Your name and date of completion will be provided on the certificate of your program choice.
Can I customize a certificate program to meet my goals?Yes. Certificate Students Receive Valuable Benefits!Uarts Student Photo ID Certificate students receive an official UArts photo ID for accessing UArts buildings and services. The ID also enables students to receive discounts at Philadelphia eateries, stores, entertainment and cultural venues – plus free admission to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Perelman Building and the Rodin Museum.
Software + Hardware Discounts Certificate students receive 80% off Adobe Creative Suite software purchased through the UArts bookstore and get discounts on hardware at the University of Pennsylvania’s Computer Connection store.
UArtsLibraryBorrowingPrivilegesCertificate students may use the UArts library, borrow materials and access extensive digital resources.
Uarts Email address Certificate students receive an official UArts email address to help them keep up with UArts announcements and updates. It is especially useful when taking UArts courses online.

Did You Know?Continuing Education courses are applicable to degree programs at the University, and undergraduate credit is awarded based on a review of the student’s Continuing Studies transcript. University of the Arts Continuing Education courses provide knowledge and essential skills in specific fields and are taught by highly qualified faculty with in-depth experience in their subject areas.
After the successful completion of all required certificate courses, students enrolled in a certificate program are invited to a recognition reception where they are presented with an official Certificate of Completion. New Dining Facilities on CampusBeginning this fall, the University of the Arts will introduce a new dining services program to our campus community. Continuing Education students will be able to purchase food a la carte.
The dining services program will feature the TerraDiningHallonthefirstfloorofTerraHallat211 S. Broad Street (Broad and Walnut Streets). Mangia, in the basement of Hamilton Hall at 320 S. Broad Street (Broad and Pine Streets), will be anauthenticItalian-stylepizzashopfeaturingeat-in or take-out counter service. If you need to grab a quick bite before an evening class, these inviting locations will provide convenient options and a placetogatherandsocialize.
Tuition Discount Increased to 25% for UArts AlumniGraduates of the University of the Arts, as well as those who have successfully completed a Continuing Education certificate program, can now receive a 25% tuition discount on courses offered by the Continuing Education and Professional Institute for Educators programs. Children of graduates also are eligible for a 25% tuition discount on courses taken in the Pre-College Saturday School and Summer Institute programs.
The discount is an increase from 10% to enhance benefits for our valued UArts alumni, including alumni of our predecessor institutions, the Philadelphia College of Art and Design and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. For more information on the alumni discount, see p. 42.

The Division of Continuing Studies at the University of the Arts offers lifelong learning for imaginative individuals of all ages and abilities seeking inspiration, skills-building and the opportunity to create. The Division of Continuing Studies includes:
Continuing Education, which offers certificate programs and credit and non-credit classes for adults, as well as PA Act 48 activity hours.
Pre-College Programs + Outreach, which provides quality arts education to students in grades K-12 locally and nationally through the Pre-College Saturday School, the Pre-College Summer Institute (for high school students) and the Saturday Arts Lab (for students in grades K-8).
The Professional Institute for Educators, which serves the needs of teachers by offering non-matriculated, graduate-level professional development courses that meet PA Act 48 requirements.

The course covers the safe and effective use of cold shop equipment and the sandblaster, along with a variety of adhesives, stained glass and other fabrication techniques. Digital Photography IThis course is an exploration of the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn skills needed to capture images, including proper exposure settings for aperture, shutter speed, metering, color and light balance with an emphasis on developing strong composition, lighting and manual techniques. This course employs a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, field trips, critiques and an awareness of the critical issues in contemporary photography. We accept registration by fax, by mail, in person or online at cs.uarts.edu/ce. We do not accept registration over the telephone. To register, you must submit the completed registration form with payment in full. Payment may be made in the form of a check or money order payable to: The University of the Arts or by credit card – American Express, MasterCard and VISA are accepted. Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis.
The University reserves the right to deny registration to any student based upon the student’s prior behavior or actions in a previous class, program or workshop at the University.
Additionally, any current student may be dismissed from his/her class and the program if found to be disruptive or behaving inappropriately in class or on the University campus. Students dismissed from any UArts Continuing Studies program will be denied admission to future terms and programs.

All sponsored students are required to complete a Tuition Repayment Agreement (promissory note) in order to be registered for the class and to initiate third-party billing. Courses in this program are indicated with a “CE” prefix. Courses for credit have a “C” suffix, and courses for non-credit have an “N” suffix.
University of the Arts Continuing Studies courses provide knowledge and essential skills in specific fields and are taught by highly qualified faculty with in-depth experience in their subject areas. Continuing Studies courses at the University of the Arts are applicable to degree programs at the University. Credit is awarded based on a review of the student’s Continuing Studies transcript.

2. Extreme emergency, substantiated by written documentation
To receive the grade of Incomplete, the student must obtain written approval from the course instructor and the Continuing Education Coordinator prior to the conclusion of the semester. Incomplete grades not cleared by the end of the sixth week following the due date on the final coursework will automatically be assigned a grade of “F.”
