• #1: Power Consumption/Controlling Energy CostsConcern: Power consumption is the

single largest problem in the majority of all data centers

Strategy: Decreased power utilization (cost savings /ROI) & increased energy efficiency will result in overall increased data center performance

Must Maximize the Watts per square foot!

“Green” Data Center : Challenges

• #2: Airflow/CoolingConcern: The cost of cooling and

electricity is already exceeding the cost of the server and connectivity equipment in many data centers

Strategy: Decreased power (& cooling) utilization & increased server cooling efficiency will result in overall increased data center performance

Data Centers must control and efficiently cool server heat in the racks

AIRFLOW IS THE NEW CASH FLOW. (C.E. COMM “GREEN” SLOGAN)

• #3: Materials Usage/WasteConcern: Need to reduce the use of

excess connectivity materials & waste (i.e. copper/fiber) on site.

Strategy: Utilize reusable and less bulky materials/cabling, as well as high-density connectivity solutions resulting in overall increased data center performance & efficiencies

“Green” Data Center : Challenges

The Data Center sector consumed about 61 billion kWh in 2006, which is

approximately 1.5% of the total U.S. electricity consumption at an estimated

cost of $4.5 billion.

These amounts are projected to increase to 100 billion kWh by 2011, representing almost 2.5% of total U.S. electricity consumption, costing approximately $7.4 billion.

In a recent survey, Enterprise Data Center Managers noted that 42% of them

expected to run out of power capacity within 1-2 years.

These same Data Center Managers noted that 23% of them expected to run out of power capacity within the next 2-5 years.

AMP NETCONNECT

TYCO ELECTRONICS’ Green Data Center Program addresses

the ecosystem from several positions:– Materials

• Product solutions are RoHS & WEEE compliant • Production minimizes scrap, reuses, recycles where

possible– Product sets treat the data center as a

closed ecosystem• Based on modular, reusable, low-profile solutions• OEM position enables designing for energy efficiency

from the board level out. – True end-to-end solutions from board to board

through the matched cabling solution

AMP’s GLOBAL “GREEN”INITIATIVES

AMP NETCONNECT

Power-Consumption Friendly•High-density MRJ21 cabling system:

• Enables 7-27% power reduction per port for OEMs

• Double-density interface creates more efficient line card platform for Network OEMs

• Cable size is 30% smaller than 6 4-pair CAT 5E cables which enables better air circulation in and around pathways. Better cooling, less power.

• Shielded Cat6A Cabling:• Shielded enables energy efficient electronics design on

network electronics

• Reduced Site testing – no need to test Alien crosstalk due to shield

•XG Fiber Optic Cabling:• Low profile high-density modular fiber optic cable

• Optical transceivers draw significantly less power than 10G copper ports

• USGBC - LEEDS – Building based credits for a positive

environmental impact design

– Products are not specifically called out– Benefits can be recognized/referenced

based on impact• AMP NETCONNECT – TEC has been

producing environmentally friendly products for decades.– Lead-free datacom cable production – Design team for First Green building in PA –

1998 DEP HQ• Provided modular (reusable/recyclable)

Global Summit

Challenge:Develop a means for certifiably sanitizing hard drives beyond forensic reconstruction while retaining the ability to reuse the hard drive.

Outcome:The Hard Drive Industry collaborated with The Center for Magnetic Recording Research, under the direction of the US National Security Agency (NSA), to meet the challenge. They developed a sanitization standard called: SECURE ERASE

Secure Erase

Five Critical Requirements

• Eliminate Data Beyond Forensic

Reconstruction.

• Maintain Absolute Care, Custody and

Control of the Process.

• Provide Certification that creates a

Defendable Audit Trail.

• Ensure that the Process is Scalable and

Easy to Implement.

• Meets NIST 800-88 Guidelines for Purging &

Clearing of Data

• Provide a Green Solution, Reformat & Image

for Reuse.
