BERKELEY SENIOR CORNER - July 2020

Getting back to normal? Not exactly, but we have taken a number of cautious steps in that direction. Thanks to the measures taken by our Berkeley Board and Staff to minimize possible exposure to the COVD19, we have successfully conducted sev-eral events without any reported casualties. In addition to several tournaments and match play competitions, we have opened our dining facility for regular service. It bears repeating, if you are sick, don’t come to Berkeley. If you become sick after being at Berkeley, please let our staff know. We will alert anyone you may have exposed. If we all continue to do our parts, we can safely escape from sheltering in place at home and enjoy the game we love at Berkeley.

Results of the first Senior Tournament. On a perfect spring day, Wednesday June 17 we competed for Stableford Points. With the new handicap system, we allowed both White Tee and Golf Tee players to compete. 1st Place - Jim Andersen +5 T 2nd Place - Mike Robison, Harvey Gammon, Grant Krueger +3 T5th Place- Brian Slack, Paul Dillon, Hugh McGonagle, Craig Barrs +2 Close Up #14 - Paul White

Match Play: Berkeley wins 1st Match at Fairways of Canton CC.Match Play Captain Barry Lakas reported “I am very happy to report that the BHCC match play team won 10-8 at the Fair-ways of Canton today. Twelve Berkeley Senior golfers made the trip playing 6 matches in a four ball better ball format. Each match is worth 3 points, 1 point for the front nine, 1 point for the back nine and 1 point for the match. Here are the results:”

Barry Lakas and Ed Odmark took all 3 points against their opponentsBob Beebe and Dean Nejame played like pros in taking the pro position 2.5 to .5.Harvey Gammon and Rick O’Dom went 2 to1 against their opponentsJim Andersen and Hugh McGonagle tied at 1.5 to 1.5 pointsJohn Cahill and Rawd McArthur came in with 1 point to put us over the top.Great playing guys. It’s very tough to win on the road.

Eighteen clubs will participate in 3 divisions of 6 teams each. Berkeley is in the Masters Division with Polo, Brookfield, Olde Atlanta, Fairways of Canton and Indian Hills. The schedule has been shortened to 4 preliminary matches, 2 will be at home and 2 away, the last 3 matches are as follows:July 15 Indian Hills at BerkeleyAugust 5 Brookfield at BerkeleySeptember TBD Berkeley at Polo

Once the reduced schedule has been completed, 8 teams will qualify for the playoffs. Teams finishing first and second in the three divisions qualify and two third place teams scoring the most points will qualify as wildcards. Barry Lakas and Ed Odmark - Co-Captains. All correspondence regarding match play should be directed to [email protected].

The BSMGA represents Berkeley in the North Atlanta Senior Men’s Golf Association (NASMGA). There are 17 participating country club in NASMGA. During a usual golfing calendar (8 months), eight of the clubs will host a golf tournament at their club. Since COVD19 Pandemic, the first four tournaments have been cancelled. And the remaining tournament hosts are look-ing into ways in which they could accommodate 80 to 90 golfers safely.

For more information about the Berkeley Senior Men’s Golf Association please direct your inquiry to Jim Andersen at [email protected].
