Today’s boys...tomorrow’s gentlemen

Page 2: CBC Newsletter Week 2 Term 2

From the Vice PrincipalMr Kenny and I are often seen in the yard together chatting. When we are not discussing our next ebay purchase, we are often discussing CBC Fremantle. We both find it an amazing place, and walking around the campus at recess and lunch, the boys make us feel like Mr Chips. CBC Fremantle has an intangible quality that people who come from outside our community sense immediately.

Unfortunately, like all the good things in our lives that we become familiar with (in my case my wife, children and dog), we can sometimes forget just how blessed we are.

During the past two weeks, our community has proved it is exactly as we acclaim it to be. Term 2 began with the very sad news about Mr Foley. The immediate support that was shown by all members of our family, staff, students, past staff and Old Boys, brother and sister schools, parents and EREA alike was immensely comforting for us, and for Mr Foley’s family.

We managed to pull together until last Friday when hundreds of the boys celebrated with their mums and grandmums at our Mother’s Day Liturgy. The Gymnasium was filled, as we acknowledged the key role women

play in all of our lives, and the feeling of belonging to something special was clearly felt. The College received scores of emails from mums thanking us for the event, but I say thank you to you all for embracing us as much as we embrace your sons.

Friday afternoon, more than 50 representatives from CBC Fremantle, staff, students and parents attended Mr Foley’s funeral. The Swanbourne Surf Club was filled to capacity as Ben’s life was celebrated, and he was farewelled. Our immediate community, buoyed in spirit from our wider community, was there to play its part in supporting the Foley family.

Tuesday’s College Memorial Service for Mr Foley was the culmination of a

week of emotion. I was overcome by the presence of hundreds of Ben’s colleagues and students, past and present, parents and representatives from other schools. Mrs Lawlor’s brave and emotional reflection, Michael Zoiti and Matthew French’s student contribution and Father Tony’s homily of hope and inspiration made me very proud to be a part of this College. The Foley family also felt an immediate belonging to and with us, despite this being their first engagement with our community. Such is the power of that intangible quality we have.

The word community is defined as a small, social unit of any size that shares common values. The CBC Fremantle community cannot be defined. It has developed into a thing of beauty; rare, and becoming rarer in today’s ever-

changing world. I do not want to wake up in 10 to 15 years’ time and recognise what I was once a part of. I wake up every morning and thank God I am a part of it now.

Mr Domenic BurgioVice Principal

We would be delighted to be with you and your family at the CBC Family Mass on Saturday to celebrate being part of this wonderful community. Details are on page 5.

Year 11 and 12 exams commence Monday 27 May and run for two weeks.

During this time boys need only attend the exam venue when they have an exam. If students wish to see their teachers, please contact teachers prior to this to ensure they are available. Boys coming in to see a teacher or for private study must wear the College uniform

While examinations can be daunting, they present us all with an opportunity to show what we know and get feedback on what we need to know. CBC Fremantle runs its exams in the same manner as the Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority.

Some Things to Remember• Know your examination timetable;

place exam times on your Study Planner

• So that you can study prior to exams, homework often decreases. Plan how

you will use this available time to study for all exams. Again, use your study planner.

• When studying, take notes, use a highlighter or Post-its. Don’t study on your bed or in front of the television. In order to achieve your best, you need to study at your best.

• Have everything you need for an exam ready 24 hours in advance. This way you have an opportunity to get or purchase anything you may need.

• Arrive at the exam venue in good time. Factor in traffic delays and the unexpected.

• Be in full College uniform. • Know the exam rules – silence on

entering the room, stationery in a clear container or plastic bag, use only a clear water bottle, no food.

• Once in the exam room, having followed directions, pick a desk where you will feel most comfortable.

• Use the reading time at the start of the exam properly. Read each question

carefully and calmly. Plan how you may approach an essay. If you have choice, think of the positives and negatives in attempting each question.

• When working, use all the available time. You should never stop looking for extra marks. Check your answers or add to some written sections. No-one should close their paper until the supervisor says the time has finished.

• Above all, be prepared. A well- prepared student soon calms down in an exam and performs well. Exam nerves affect students for the first five minutes only. Poor preparation affects students for 3 hours or however long the exam takes. You should have no excuses.

We wish all students the best of success over the examination period.

The BiG Day InOne of the main problems with IT careers in Australia is that very few students actually have an understanding of what kind of jobs are available and how to go about achieving a career in this field.

Recently our Year 11 AIT students were invited to attend the BiG Day In at the Perth Town Hall – an exciting opportunity for WA students who are interested in a career in IT.

The BiG Day In is an IT careers conference with a difference. The event is organised, run and hosted by students for students, which helps to build the movement of

those who are interested in a career in IT and who want to take action to get ahead now.

The ACS Foundation has observed a gap in delivering IT career information to students and believes that the best way for them to get this information to the students is to hear from people with ‘been there, done that’ experience. The Foundation facilitates leading speakers from companies such as Google, IBM, NEC, PwC and others to speak about the future of technology and how students can get involved in shaping that future.

This was an incredible opportunity for the Year 11 AIT students as this conference provided an awareness of what is available to them, what to consider and food for thought for those who wish to pursue a career in IT.

Well done to the boys who participated as it was an extremely rewarding and successful event.
