Executive Director’s MessageI am grateful every day, but since November is the month for thankfulness, it only seems appropriate for me to thank each and every one of you for the support you’ve lent to the Allen County SPCA this year. Whether you opened your home to an adopted pet, donated in memory of a friend or loved one, hosted or attended a fundraiser, fostered and/or volunteered, I thank you.

The Allen County SPCA is a small but mighty family, and you play such an important role in our success. Our mission is a simple one, really – to help both pets and the people who love them. As a member of our family, you have been instrumental in helping us to achieve that mission. Your gifts - whether time, talent or treasure (and sometimes all three) – enable us to be more and to do more.

I assure you that there isn’t a person here who is not mission-driven and dedicated to the animals in our care, and your support of the program is also a support of them. This Thanksgiving, know that I speak for everyone associated with the shelter when I tell you how grateful I am for you and your friendship to the homeless pets of the Allen County SPCA!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Community Cats Get a Helping Hand By: Melissa Osborn

We delivered our 76th Barn cat to his new home this month! If you haven’t heard about all the lives this program is saving, please allow me to get you up to speed. Since the city’s Community Cat ordinance was passed in July of 2015, hundreds of feline lives have been saved. With the amended ordinance in place, any free-roaming cat with no known owner can be taken to H.O.P.E. for Animals to be spayed/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, microchipped, ear tipped and returned to where their resources are. This is a process known as TNR (trap-neuter-return). TNR is the most humane way to reduce populations of free-roaming cats. Other, less humane, methods have been attempted for decades and have all proven to be ineffective. When Community Cats appear to have no resources available to them or can’t be returned to where they came from, the Barn Cat Program is an option for them.

Cats are delivered to their barn/out-building homes and set up in relocation towers where they stay for 2-4 weeks. The towers get the cat used to its new surroundings and allow for animals already living in the barn to come visit and safely get to know the new resident. Once the introduction period is over, the tower is opened, and the cat can venture out when it feels comfortable. Barn cats are a wonderful, organic way to keep your property free of rodents. Your grain bins are more sanitary, the cat gets to live out its life, and your family can enjoy watching them work! It’s a win-win for everyone…well, everyone except the mice!

Seeking Board Members

The Allen County SPCA board of Directors has two immediate openings. Interested parties should email or mail a letter of intent and a resume to the attention of the Board Development Committee. The LOI should illustrate why you’re interested in serving and what talents and or gifts you can share with the Allen County SPCA. The Board Development Committee will then contact you to discuss the details of board service for our beloved organization.

Please send your LOI and resume before the deadline (November 30, 2015) to Jessica at [email protected] or by mail to 4914 S. Hanna Street Fort Wayne, IN 46806

Boots the barn cat loves the hugs he gets from Tatum. Being a barn cat is hard work, but it is worth it for a happy home..

Spotlight on Volunteers: Sue Beres By: J. Mark Hannon

Sue Beres has been volunteering at the Allen County SPCA since 2002. When she is volunteering, Sue enjoys spending time with the adoptable cats, but she most often spends her time tackling the endless pile of laundry at the shelter. Sue also enjoys representing the Allen County SPCA at outreach events. When Sue is not volunteering, she likes to spend time with her three rescue cats, Sadie, Sassie and Sabina. Sue also loves to travel and recently completed a week-long, solo car trip to and from Florida. In addition to being a loving wife and dedicated volunteer, Sue is also a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren ranging in age from 21 to 4-years old.
