We had a very successful PetFest 2019 be-
cause of all of you. We want to thank every-
one who attended. I hope you had as much
fun as we did. The weather cooperated
even if it was a little hot.
Dog-Abilities held some fun
contests for the dogs. Here’s
the Best Costume winner.
We love that Pet-
Fest is a showcase for adoptable
animals. We had 3 county shelters
and 7 rescues. Many cats and dogs
found their forever home.
The Silent
Auction tent
had some-
thing for
everyone.
TriState Noah Project had
Captain Jack visit PetFest
and he was a big hit.

We asked Kathleen Ritzi, Grant County
director since September 2017, to tell us
her story:
The Grant County Animal Shelter contin-
ues to grow and improve. I have been
with the shelter since 2010 as a part time
employee and shortly thereafter became
a full time employee. At that time and un-
der the previous director our euthanasia rates were
over 50% for dogs and cats. We were euthanizing at
staggering rates each week. We shortly began imple-
menting spay neuter clinics twice a month for dogs
and cats.
I suggested at that time when people surrender litters
of puppies or kittens they should be required to either
sign up the mother to be altered or surrender her as
well. My suggestion was taken and quickly imple-
mented. Surprisingly people were on board with the
strongly suggested new rule. I
held two clinics a month send-
ing 30 or more pets to each
clinic to be altered. As time
went on, our numbers began to
steadily drop. Last year we took
in 316 dogs and 280 cats, quite
a decrease since 2010 and it’s
been steadily declining each year. We con-
tinue to do our spay neuter clinics, have
an active TNR program in our county each
month, educate owners, and offer pro-
grams to assist the general public with al-
tering their pets.
We also work closely with a few rescues
that help us with sick/injured and pregnant
animals. We have several fosters within our network
that are willing to help raise kittens or puppies that are
a little too young yet to be adopted if rescue can not
be found. We also have several volunteers that come
in weekly to walk and socialize the pets to help them
become more adoptable as well.
In 2018 our numbers for the year were 96% live re-
lease rate on cats and 95% live release rate on dogs.
It’s been a slow but steady process making improve-
ments each year as time passes. We have not had to
euthanize due to space in several years, a
healthy and social animal should not die
just because there is no room.
The shelter is always happy to welcome new volunteers, our email address is [email protected]
