Advanced Surface Design A CATIA Shape Design and Styling Solutions Product Highlights Industry-Proven Productivity – Leading-Edge Technologies Offers precise design tools to create complex surfaces using various constraints • Lets the user easily create fillets between two surfacic (surface, face or skin) elements with constant radius Enables users to create internal, sharp corners by manually selecting a subset of automatically selected edges for fillet definition • Trims supports for filleted elements • Linearly blends constant radius fillets created on different edges Lets the user easily create complex variable fillets along edges of a skin • Reorders fillet sizes to bring together multiple radii • Allows designers to modify swept surfaces by altering some of the generating elements • Offers strong associativity between surface and solid design • Provides direct surface data for downstream tasks such as 2D detailing and numerical control programming • Can parameterize surface parent curves and constant laws • Creates and analyzes drafts on 2D contours and surfaces, even for very complex parts Includes analysis functions to verify "mold-ability" Reduces the need for physical mock-ups to handle surface curvature and reflect continuity Advanced Surface Design includes tools to create drafts on 2D contours, faces, surfaces and skins, even for very complex parts. Analysis capabilities included in the product facilitate verifica- tion of "mold-ability" of the part. Automatic Filleting and Rounding... Automatic filleting between two surface elements eliminates the need for time- consuming manual trimming of geom- etry. Advanced Surface Design can round the sharp edges on one or both support elements avoiding possible errors if done manually. Surface Creation... With Advanced Surface Design, designers can form highly accurate swept surfaces while controlling the tangency to adjacent surfaces. The section to be swept can be any plane shape such as a straight line, arc, conic, free-form curve or series of joined curves. The user can automati- cally create varying radius cylindrical or conic fillets between surfaces, faces and skin elements. With cylindrical fillets between ruled surfaces, the system can generate five-axis millable parts that assure a continuous tool path when moving from one surface to another.

Advanced Surface Design includes toolsto create drafts on 2D contours, faces, surfaces and skins, even for verycomplex parts. Analysis capabilitiesincluded in the product facilitate verifica-tion of "mold-ability" of the part.

Automatic Filleting and Rounding...Automatic filleting between two surfaceelements eliminates the need for time-consuming manual trimming of geom-etry. Advanced Surface Design canround the sharp edges on one or bothsupport elements avoiding possibleerrors if done manually.

Surface Creation... With AdvancedSurface Design, designers can formhighly accurate swept surfaces whilecontrolling the tangency to adjacentsurfaces. The section to be swept can beany plane shape such as a straight line, arc, conic, free-form curve or series ofjoined curves. The user can automati-cally create varying radius cylindrical orconic fillets between surfaces, faces andskin elements. With cylindrical filletsbetween ruled surfaces, the system cangenerate five-axis millable parts thatassure a continuous tool path whenmoving from one surface to another.

Modification of Surfaces... The designof complex surfaces is mainly an iterativeprocess during which the designercreates a surface, analyzes its charac-teristics and modifies the design toimprove its quality. The constructionhistory associated with surface genera-tion provides the designer with a verypowerful tool. This history is the linkbetween a surface and the elements thatwere used in its construction. AdvancedSurface Design allows the user to easilymodify a surface by going back andaltering some of the generating ele-ments such as curves, variational lawsand adjacent surfaces.

Surface/Solids Integration... Either ofthe CATIA solids products (Solid Mock-Up or Exact Solids) can complement theAdvanced Surface Design product.Being fully integrated, the surfacing toolscan take advantage of design param-eterization and the solids environment. For example, when a designer modifies aparameterized surface, the system canautomatically update the related solid.Users have the ease of use and visual-ization benefits of solids with thecomplex shape handling ability ofsurfaces.

Investment Protection... Designers canreuse and manipulate “as is” modelsfrom CATIA Version 3 in the advancedSurface Design product.
