The strategic plan will be led by 6 guiding

principles laid out by the Board

Evangelizing mission

Schools as a priority

Best possible quality

Preferential option for the poor

Access to Catholic schools

Connection to parishes

• Catholic schools exist to evangelize, to foster a relationship between each student and Jesus Christ and his Church. This mission of evangelization and discipleship should remain the top priority for our schools

• A Catholic school is the optimal comprehensive setting for religious education. Church and society benefit from strong Catholic schools. As such, sustaining and growing high quality schools is a priority for the Archdiocese of Chicago

• Each Catholic school must provide the best religious and academic quality possible, animated and supported by excellent leadership

• Core to the Catholic mission of schools is a presence, commitment to, and disproportionate investment in the poor

• Any geographic grouping of parishes in the Archdiocese should have reasonable access to at least one high quality Catholic elementary school

• Catholic schools benefit parishes, and parishes benefit schools. When possible, schools should maintain formal sponsorship by parishes, and mutually work to achieve a close, vibrant relationship

Goal Areas

1. Formation of Teachers and Leaders

The community, composed of families and educators, evangelizes and catechizes the students, lives by the liturgical calendar, celebrates the sacraments and other appropriate devotions, while constantly witnessing to its Catholic faith through service to neighbor.

Leadership Committee

Progress Update

Draft Vision Statement

• Committee has met 3 times since beginning of the strategic planning process, and has thus far completed a draft vision statement for Leadership. Essential questions have been defined, and key issues are being identified.

Modified Essential Questions

1. How do we define and measure excellence in principal leadership in Catholic education?

2. How do we ensure that effective leaders are recruited, trained, and supported for all Catholic schools?

3. How do we ensure that schools serving high poverty populations receive the same quality of leader as those that serve other populations?

4. How can the Archdiocese build and sustain a concrete pipeline of principals with particular attention to enhanced diversity?

5. How should other types of leaders be addressed through this plan (i.e. school pastors, board members, assistant principals, etc.)?

6. How can we improve compensation for school leaders, factoring in performance?

7. How can decisions on the recruitment, hiring, and accountability for school leaders best be shared between local pastors and the OCS in order to benefit the overall system of schools?

• Leaders of Catholic schools are disciples of Christ, striving to transform the lives of the children in their care by providing excellent education in a community where the Catholic faith is taught and celebrated.

Page 33: Catholic Schools Leadership Day - archchicago.orgocs.archchicago.org/Portals/23/Leadership Day PowerPoint... · 2016-08-05 · Today’s Agenda - Morning Time Activity 8 –8:30 a.m.

Nominating/Governance Committee

Progress Update

• Committee has met 3 times since beginning of the strategic planning process. Has classified all governance models into eight categories and studied the pros and cons of each model.

Next Steps

• The Committee hopes that it will ultimately define an approved “menu” of governance models that could be implemented when Renew My Church groupings become active.

• The Committee will define a set of factors that would lead a school to one model (vs. another)

School Governance refers to the structures of ownership, sponsorship, and oversight over a Catholic school.

Page 34: Catholic Schools Leadership Day - archchicago.orgocs.archchicago.org/Portals/23/Leadership Day PowerPoint... · 2016-08-05 · Today’s Agenda - Morning Time Activity 8 –8:30 a.m.

Finance/Planning Committee

Progress Update

• Committee has met continuously for several years. Recent meetings have discussed plan.

• Beginning to define a set of concrete benchmarks that define financial vitality. This number should be in addition to basic enrollment.

• It is widely assumed that there is a basic enrollment figure needed to provide religious/academic quality and financial vitality.

• Separate Facilities Committee has been meeting and is integrating work into the plan.

• Archdiocesan operation aide should be used as an investment, rather than a stopgap, to grow long-term quality and vitality.

Next Steps

• Work on establishing benchmarks of vitality will continue.

• Deep coordination with Renew My Church must continue.

Configuration planning: All parishes becoming part

of groupings for RMC planning

• All parishes will become part of a “grouping” of parishes later this Fall, as

part of the Renew My Church effort. These groupings will participate in a

Renew My Church planning process over the next ~3-4 years.

• The nature of the planning will vary by grouping, depending on the situation

of the grouping and the nature of the challenges. Two primary areas for

early focus:

• Whether the grouping needs to consider different parish configurations

for future sustainability

• Whether the parishes can be more effective in mission through greater

collaboration across parishes

• Once decisions are made about configurations and collaboration, parishes

will embark on a pastoral planning process focused on fostering parish

vitality and forming missionary disciples of Christ.

• Two Pilot Groupings to begin this fall. Timing beyond is not yet defined.

Student reactions to the ACT Aspire

• I think It was harder because the test actually got you to think

• I think the Aspire test was harder because I had a lot of trouble with

science but with the TerraNova I got through it really quickly.

• There was more difficult questions than any other test I have taken.

• Well, I didn't find them extremely harder than the TerraNova test or

the NWEA MAP but it was challenging.

• There isn't as much writing in NWEA and teranova test

• The only part that was hard was the writing assignment.

• The aspire test was harder because the questions seemed like the

next grade up questions.

Page 65: Catholic Schools Leadership Day - archchicago.orgocs.archchicago.org/Portals/23/Leadership Day PowerPoint... · 2016-08-05 · Today’s Agenda - Morning Time Activity 8 –8:30 a.m.

Student reactions to the ACT Aspire

• You have to put a little more thinking into all the questions.

• I think the questions asked were pretty average and they were

within the range of what we've learned so far in our life.

• The questions were not as difficult to solve. However, this could be

because the teachers prepared us very well.

• The ACT ASPIRE was the hardest standardized tests I've ever

taken because it stretched my mental capabilities, and forced me

to use past information that I've almost forgotten.

• The test, especially the science section, required higher-level

thinking.

• No, because I learned about the test subjects in second grade.

(from a grade three student)

• Because I'm smart

Page 66: Catholic Schools Leadership Day - archchicago.orgocs.archchicago.org/Portals/23/Leadership Day PowerPoint... · 2016-08-05 · Today’s Agenda - Morning Time Activity 8 –8:30 a.m.

What advice would you give students about taking

the ACT ASPIRE test next year?

• There isn't any study needed. Just get a good sleep, eat a good

breakfast, and go in confidently. Surely, you will do great.

• Take your time. studies show the longer you take on a public test

the better you do just because you didn't rush.

• Always take your time and remember theses results do not count

as a grade

• Remember the steps involved in an essay

• Know how to write a well written argumentative essay.

• I would like to tell students to practice writing for 30 minutes

straight and to pay attention in every single class.

• Don't panic

• This Summer AoC engaged:

• an environmental consulting firm to create a lead water testing

protocol, according to EPA guidelines;

• a testing consultant to collect potable water samples;

• an independent laboratory to test & evaluate the water samples

• By this weekend, AoC will have tested all Archdiocesan Catholic

schools (176 elementary and 4 high schools).

• That’s over 190 unique locations tested within a 30 day period

Water Testing: Progress to date

• The time needed from collection to analysis to constructing remediation

plans (as/if needed) is about three weeks

• Analyzing results requires time

• Very high demand for water lab. services across Chicagoland

• Depending on initial findings, retesting may occur

• A wide range of outcomes may occur, such as: no impact, shutting

down of particular water sources, plumbing solutions, alt.

drinking/cooking water provision, improved/updated water maintenance

processes/procedures

• Each school will receive a report of their testing results, and based on

findings, explicit directions and direct support to remediate (as/if

needed)
