  • CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OF SOUTHWEST IOWA

    GREETINGS

Our mission is to promote a

legacy of giving and support in the Diocese of

    Des Moines.

At the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa (CFSWIA), we work with Catholics across the Des Moines Diocese who truly want to make a difference in our Catholic community and the communities beyond. They come from all corners of our Diocese, but they all have the same goal: they want to create an impact.

Some Catholics feel strongly about eradicating homelessness and others are passionate about educating our young people in the Catholic faith. Some see gaps in programs for retiring priests, the disabled, or elderly, and others want to be confident their parish will be thriving generations in the future.

The bottom line is that each and every gift to the Catholic Foundation and the 118 funds we manage creates impact – both now and in the future. Any gift helps ensure that we have a vibrant and thriving Catholic community. Entrusted with the generosity of our donors, we also continue to evolve as a Catholic investor. We do not simply screen investments in order to align with Catholic teaching, we look to how we might leverage our influence as a shareholder and invest funds in ways that explicitly promote the common good.

Whatever your passion is, and whatever your ability to give is, our mission is to work with you. We want to make it easy for you to make a difference in our Diocese. There are many avenues to give back in both small and big ways. We are humbled, blessed, and excited to work with you in building toward a future filled with positive change.

Join us in creating an impact you can see and touch in our greater community. Bring your passion for a cause close to your heart to the Foundation, and let us help you connect it with a need. Let us help you answer a prayer.

“The Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa has been an incredible blessing to our mission at Iowa Catholic Radio. Their expertise made starting our foundation simple; they’ve provided knowledge, direction, and hands-on support every step of the way. When asked if they would assist in a presentation during a donor meeting, they did not even hesitate. Their passion for what they do along with their belief in our mission, connecting people to Christ, has made the process quick, easy, and efficient.”

Please note that from year 2015 to 2016, there was a decrease in asset value.

  • BURKEYS SUPPORT THEIR FAITH

A LETTER FROM BISHOPIn fall of 2019, we came in contact with Dan and Natalie Burkey, who live in Council Bluffs. They were in search of a way to be “better prepared for future giving.” In our initial conversations, their generosity and spirit were very relevant.

As a senior leader at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, Dan became aware of the Donor Advised Fund (DAF) and its use as a giving tool. Dan and Natalie became intrigued with the recent increase in the IRS standard deduction, as well as the opportunity to work with the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa (CFSWIA). Plus, the tax planning potential provided by a DAF was very attractive to them both.

“Using the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa was a natural choice for us given the alignment with our values. Their terms for administering and investing the funds were reasonable and competitive,” explained Dan. “Creating our DAF was very easy and was complete within a few days, including a few simple forms and the transferring of the securities. The staff were responsive and helpful with questions and setting up online access to our DAF.”

To establish their DAF, Dan and Natalie utilized a transfer of appreciated stock. In doing so, the Burkeys were able to avoid income taxes on the gains of the appreciated stock and “bunch” their charitable contributions. By indicating the full amount they wished to gift to numerous charities, the Burkeys were able to take advantage of itemizing tax deductions. They were also able to take advantage of the flexibility of making grants in the amounts and timing that worked best for them and the charities they support, whether they wanted to make them now or down the road.

Dan shared with us, “Our primary contributions will be directed to Creighton University and Saint Albert Catholic Schools, but will include others, as well.” Dan continued, “Our parents made significant sacrifices to provide us with Catholic educational

“May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.”

opportunities, from which we benefited both spiritually and academically. We made this a priority for our children and know that many parents desire the same for their children but are unable to afford it without assistance. We have received many blessings in our lives and believe it is important to share what we can with organizations that support causes consistent with our faith.”

Dear Friends of the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa,

Following a year of seismic social, economic, and spiritual developments in our world, country, and church, I take heart as I present to you the CFSWIA Annual Report. Overall, there is abundant good news regarding not simply the stewardship of assets on behalf of our Des Moines Diocese institutions and partners, but in terms of the leadership and service provided by Executive Director, Sue McEntee, and her team as they helped us negotiate the unfolding developments and responses prompted by the global pandemic.

One of the Advent antiphons from the Mass is taken from Psalm 85:13: “The Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth will yield its increase.” While fear and uncertainty roiled our culture and markets in roller-coaster fashion, and a steady course was met by a rebound in investments, I believe there were other spiritual assets that steadily increased, thanks in part to the role CFSWIA played. Sue became the point person assisting parish and school leadership to understand and comply with requirements so as to avail themselves of federal CARES and FFRCA acts funding, including the Payroll Protection Plan initial application and forgiveness, FEMA, and other sources. In the process, she and her team engendered greater unity and solidarity across the Diocese, often serving as the public ambassadors on both a practical, strategic level, and in maintaining confidence and hope on local levels when doubts and competing interests arose. In addition, the screening of investments with respect to Catholic-consonant values helps to ensure that we are true to our mission and to our Catholic identity.

Again, I am edified by the achievements of CFSWIA this past year, and I am grateful for your participation and prayers as we press on, bringing God’s bounty and blessings to all who seek the face of the Lord!

Faithfully in Christ,Most Rev. William M. Joensen, Ph.D.

  • HELPING THOSE WHO HELPED YOUEarlier in his life, Larry went through some troubled times. His marriage ended in divorce and would later be annulled. He sought counseling through Des Moines Diocese Catholic Charities. At the time, he was unable to afford counseling. Larry explained, “…the counseling was wonderful, I was grateful for the service. It was there when I needed it most.”

Fast forward to today, Larry is involved in his church and is enjoying his life. He continues to be impressed by the work done through the Des Moines Diocese Catholic Charities and the many services they provide in our community. To support this program and their services makes Larry proud to donate “as much as he can” to them annually. As he was working on his estate plan, he chose to designate a portion to the Des Moines Diocese Catholic Charities.

“It was fairly simple; I worked with my attorney to include the necessary language for the gift,” he said.

This story started out with a road block in life, and ended with a “simple” task to help others. On behalf of Catholic Charities and the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa, we would like to thank Larry for this generous gift. Larry is similar to a single drop off water that creates a ripple effect, and we are grateful.

“CFSWIA has been proactive in offering reviews of our investments and offering suggestions on how we might better utilize their Catholic Values Investment portfolios to serve our clients’ needs. Most recently, we received a large estate gift right as the markets were falling due to the pandemic. With the guidance of our board and the quick action and leadership of CFSWIA, we were able to invest conservatively

    - Dr. Barbara Decker, Catholic Charities

until the markets began to come back. Our more aggressive investing later during the pandemic allowed us to take

advantage of the stock market rebuild.”

MCGONEGLES GIVE BACKAt the McGonegle home, they divide responsibilities. Geri said, “Terry always takes care of our giving. He is a very generous man, I am very proud to stand beside him and our philanthropic decisions. We know that what we have, is not meant just for us, we need to make a difference in our community.”

Geri and Terry McGonegle are members at St. John Catholic parish in Norwalk. Along with St. John Catholic Parish, Geri and Terry also support Iowa Catholic Radio, InnerVisions HealthCare, and Children and Families of Iowa.

Geri and Terry came to us with questions regarding Durable Power of Attorney in terms of healthcare, and with regard to facilitating a gift of stock for the St. John Catholic Parish capital campaign. In Terry’s work life, he was a CFO. During that time he learned, “a gift of stock allows the biggest bang for the buck!”

Terry shared, “At first I was worried this would be difficult, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was so easy. The CFSWIA, in partnership with the parish office manager, sent us wire instructions. I forwarded that email with instructions to my broker. My broker sent me paperwork to sign off on the transaction and the stock was sent to the CFSWIA and directly added to the St. John capital campaign fund.”

Appreciated stock, held for more than one year, can be the ideal choice for individuals who want their charitable gifts to make the biggest impact for the lowest possible cost. The donor does not have to realize the capital gains, and earns the tax benefit of the gift. The charity, in turn, receives the full value of the stock, gain and all!

Terry shared, “We have been very blessed and fortunate over the last 25 years. Even when things weren’t good, God provided. My last employer created an opportunity for us, and we did quite well with that. It was important to us to give back.”

Stock gifts to any of our funds or entities within the Diocese can be easily facilitated through CFSWIA. Call us at 515-237-5044 or email us at [email protected].

  • COVID-19Our vision to promote a legacy of giving and support within the Diocese of Des Moines drives us each day to do all we can to build trust with you, our partners stretching to all corners of our diocese. Since March of 2020, we have done our best to continue to provide our services, and more, to the best of our ability. We’ve had many struggles, but also many successes. The following are some of our successes that came as a result of the struggles of the first half of 2020:

All of our staff, Sue, Brooke, and Rachel, have managed to work from home for a large portion of this year. We have adjusted to “virtual” meetings and check-ins, and managed to work through the struggles of not being able to ask eachother questions and check-in more than once a day. While the CFSWIA staff has not been in the office, we have remained very busy, working with our parishes, schools, and various donors.

The stock markets took a wild ride in March and April, only to soon come back to levels we were at before the pandemic. We are pleased to report that our Catholic values filtering and investing strategies have proven to be beneficial in the volatile market that we experienced through the end of June 2020.

As the CARES Act was unrolled as a way to stimulate the economy, we worked for weeks with our parishes, schools, and others to get Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) applications, and later forgiveness applications, submitted to the Small Business Administration.

FEMA is another great financial resource for our Diocese. We assisted with the submission for the right to apply for FEMA for just over 60 parishes and schools. That process moved in a slow pattern, but all gathered and validated expenses related to COVID-19, in order to be ready to submit expenses to FEMA. Each entity had to have at least $3,300 in expenses in order to apply.

Lastly, we have had the opportunity to connect our resources, both financial and philanthropic with parishes, schools, and individuals across the southwest quadrant of our state. We assisted in fully executing a few planned gifts that some Diocesan parishioners had been waiting to complete for some time. What a great time to check off items on your to-do list!

The first six months of 2020 were definitely not easy, but they were extremely beneficial to our growth as a Foundation.

“We have really appreciated all the help and guidance

that CFSWIA and the rest of the Diocese has

provided us through the COVID pandemic. The timely

information and patience in helping us work through PPP and

FEMA forms has been exceptional. They have always been available to take our calls and emails with

prompt responses. We could always count on them as a

resource! It’s a pleasure working with them.”

    - Mary Treanor, All Saints Parish (Des Moines)

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

    - Philippians 2:3-4

GIVE NOW, AND LATERThe Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa (CFSWIA) periodically runs small informational ads in the Catholic Mirror. One such ad caught the attention of Richard. He knew he needed to update his will and called our offices for help.

In talking, Richard knew that he wanted to leave parts of his estate to the Basilica of St. John, his home parish, but also wanted to support those in need that were seeking a Catholic education.

Richard grew up in Des Moines and through scholarship, attended Catholic schools. Richard’s mother was handicapped and a single mother. He explains, “Without the generosity of others, there is no way I could have attended Catholic schools.” He stated, “Catholic schools changed my life, I was taught lessons that made me a better person.”

Richard knew he wanted to leave his mark on his faith and life through his philanthropy and his wishes. Brooke Pulliam, our Director of Planned Giving, shared a variety of funds and giving tools he could choose to support. Richard knew he wanted to support his parish first, and then he wanted to benefit Catholic education through scholarships for those less fortunate, which is the same type of fund that helped him.

Creating an estate plan takes time and reflection. As the planned giving office for the Diocese of Des Moines, the CFSWIA was able to outline multiple opportunities and needs within the Diocese that aligned with Richard’s wishes to make an impact. One of the comments Richard shared was, “my faith motivated me, it carried me through tough times in my life and illness; but I also found wonderful success. I am blessed, and I want to help.” We certainly are a blessed community. Thank you, Richard.

  • LEGACY SOCIETY MAKING AN IMPACT, NOW & LATERHelen Ruggle, a CFSWIA donor, has been a member of St. Patrick Parish in Perry since moving there in 1943, at age 7. Helen and her seven siblings all graduated from St. Patrick Catholic School and she has fond memories of their time there.

In late February, we received a call from Helen Ruggle. She was interested in establishing a second Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA); Helen has been a believer in CGAs for quite some time. A CGA allows you to make a gift of cash, stock, or asset to benefit your choice of charity or charities, from that gift you are paid fixed income, quarterly, and after your death, the remainder of the gift is given to a non-profit(s) of your choice.

When asked, “Why a CGA?” Helen explained that she knew the gift would help her income flow now, and make an impact to the charities she has come to love through reading the Catholic Mirror and being involved in her parish.

Over the years, Helen has enjoyed reading about Catholic Charities and seeing them in action. She appreciates the work they do for those in our communities that need help and support. Pictured to the right is Helen, with Brooke Pulliam, and one of her handmade quilts. Helen is donating some of her quilts to Catholic Charities. She is happy to do her part in making anyone a bit more comfortable and making sure they know someone is thinking of them.

Helen has remembered St. Patrick Parish, St. Patrick Catholic School, Catholic Charities, and the Priest Pension Fund as beneficiaries of her CGAs.

Helen shared, “I picked charities that would do the most good for the most people.” As she reflected on her philanthropy, she explained that her uncle was a priest and remembers how important the Priest Pension Fund was to him; she only hopes that we can continue to support our priest community, as they have supported all of us.

At the CFSWIA, we are proud to know and blessed to work with Helen. She has created a beautiful Legacy within our Diocese.

On June 30th, 2020, the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa (CFSWIA) awarded 10 grants to Catholic parishes, schools, and organizations within the Diocese of Des Moines. The 10 grants totaled $29,850 (see list below). One grant, at $9,000, will be delayed at the recipients request due to COVID-19, and granted out in 2021. Grant awards for 2020 range from $900 to $9,000.

Since 2012, CFSWIA has granted over $230,000 to various entities within the Diocese of Des Moines. Generally, we host our recipients at a dinner event in their honor. However, due to this year’s COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to host all of the recipients for an awards ceremony.

“We are pleased, that among all that has happened this year, we are able to provide grant awards to these well-deserving entities,” says Sue McEntee, CFSWIA Executive Director. “These grants will allow the recipients to move forward with projects that may have been put off due to the financial stress so many are feeling.” Sacred Heart Parish

“Since 2012, CFSWIA has granted over

    Diocese of Des Moines.”

ST. AUGUSTIN & STEPHEN MINISTRYDuring 2019, Fr. James Livingston, a senior priest of St. Augustin Parish in Des Moines, found an increase in the need for spiritual support from families and individuals dealing with the loss of loved ones and other life difficulties. However, the current pastoral staff was unable to meet with the volume of parishioners seeking help. The reality of life within many Catholic Churches is that our clergy are stretched very thin. Because of this, Fr. Livingston had been working with Joni Mudge and Julie Melcher, both parishioners, to look at bringing the Stephen Ministry program to their parish.

Stephen Ministry offers a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, one-on-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and community experiencing difficulties. The methodology of Stephen Ministry is very well established across many demographics in 30 different countries. With Stephen Ministry:

+ Pastors have a team of gifted, trained, and committed lay caregivers ready to minister to hurting people.

+ Laypeople nurture and use their gifts in meaningful ministry, growing spiritually as they serve others. These are Stephen Ministers who have been trained by Stephen Leaders.

+ People who are hurting have a caring Christian presence to provide emotional and spiritual support. These individuals are considered Care Receivers.

Back in 1994, St. Augustin had utilized Stephen Ministry, but the people involved in the ministry then are no longer here, and the program has since lapsed.

Joni Mudge is the wife of St. Augustin Parish Director of Parish Life, Randy. Randy had an established a relationship with CFSWIA, so he knew about our grant program. As Randy heard Joni discussing St. Augustin’s need for Stephen Ministry, Randy figured it could be a great idea to submit, so they set out to apply together. They had hopes of receiving funds to train Stephen Leaders, and then use those Leaders to train more parishioners to become Stephen Ministers.

The grant was approved, and Joni and Julie are now working to become trained Stephen Ministry Leaders. Having the program active in past years will allow the $1,675 Stephen Ministry enrollment fee to be waived. As a onetime cost, they will receive the necessary training and tools to train others within the parish to become lay ministers and it will continue long into the future!

Within a parish community, it is a frequent occurance to encounter parishioners enduring adverse life events. This ministry can serve the community by extending the capacity of our leadership and ministry capability. Without the CFSWIA grant, this rediscovered service would not have been able to move forward. If you’d like to learn more about St. Augustin Parish and this ministry, give them a call at 515-255-1175.

“The CFSWIA staff is incredibly supportive of our efforts to raise awareness of the St.

Pius X Foundation. Partnering with the CFSWIA has

allowed our foundation board to move away from managing the investment portfolio and focus

on promoting a legacy of giving. Recently, St. Pius X and the

CFSWIA co-sponsored a presentation on wills and estate

planning. The success of this presentation has encouraged us

to plan for more events like this in the future.”
