Mission u, formerly SOCM, was a great event in July; 11 of us from the Southwest District shared in that time together. The studies offered were so interesting. The Poverty of our neighbors is evident all around us as we go about in our daily lives. Learning the issues causing some of the poverty and what WE can do to help is a vital for UMW. The study of the Roma people is so interesting and again the issue of poverty comes into why they have to live as they do. Judy Marnin, our Communications Coordinator, was one of the instructors on the Roma and traveled with a group of UMW in late spring to learn more about the people and their lives. The Spiritual growth study was titled “The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly,” led by Mary Morris; it gave us an opportunity to look at ourselves and how we live our lives. I ask you to give yourself a gift this fall and attend the MEE event of the studies, October 18th-20th in Marshalltown, IA. Jeremiah 29:31 -- For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for

your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. (NRSV UMW Bible)

I find it hard to believe we are now in August, the doorway to the end of summer. I hope you

enjoyed your summer with some special days, and hopefully you were able to attend one of the T.E.A.M.

meetings and share in that fellowship. As summer fades, we begin to look forward to fall and what we

have planned for UMW in the Southwest District.

Mission u, formerly SOCM, was a great event in July; 11 of us from the Southwest District

shared in that time together. The studies offered were so interesting. The Poverty of our neighbors is

evident all around us as we go about in our daily lives. Learning the issues causing some of the poverty

and what WE can do to help is a vital for UMW. The study of the Roma people is so interesting and

again the issue of poverty comes into why they have to live as they do. Judy Marnin, our

Communications Coordinator, was one of the instructors on the Roma and traveled with a group of

UMW in late spring to learn more about the people and their lives. The Spiritual growth study was titled

“The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly,” led by Mary Morris; it gave us an opportunity to look

at ourselves and how we live our lives. I ask you to give yourself a gift this fall and attend the MEE

event of the studies, October 18th-20th in Marshalltown, IA. Our fall District Mission Study will

also cover these issues, so please mark your calendars to attend, Oct 26th at Missouri Valley UMC.

We look forward to sharing with you at our 2013 Annual Meeting which will be held on Thursday

September 26th at the Greenfield UMC. That is the day we celebrate our units’ successes of 2012,

offer training for your officers, and most of all, enjoy great fellowship together. The Iowa Conference

UMW officers will be joining us in the morning and sharing information with us. One item will be

information on the upcoming UMW Assembly to be held April 25th -27th, 2014, in Louisville,

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR – Judy Marnin

This was my first year to attend District Officers Training Event (DOTE) at Mission u. Jean Janes, interim Conference

Communications Coordinator, presided, and gave me some good ideas for Airwaves. Hope I can implement them! In the

meantime, if you have suggestions, PLEASE feel free to let me know. All comments are welcome!

Program Resources – Sandra Welch

Praise God for a spirit-refreshing Mission U in July. If you missed it, be sure to plan to attend MEE in October. I’m sending out a big thank you to all the units who submitted their Reading Reports. So glad to see so many women, some children, and men enjoy the books. So which unit will receive the prize for the most readers? Come to the annual meeting on September 26 at Greenfield to find out!

I will have new 2014 books for sale, as well as the Mission Study books to share with your unit. If you own a Kindle e-reader you may purchase The Roma of Europe and The Call:Living Sacramentally,Walking Justly study books at Amazon.com. The 2014 Prayer Calendar will be available this fall. I use mine to record prayer concerns and joys. I also write insights from my reading of the Bible. It helps me realize all the people and places touched by our mission giving. I was challenged to share my ‘loaves and fishes’ in One Simple Act of generosity. I can extend

love, faith, encouragement, even forgiveness, then find all that plus great understanding of others and our Father! I am a Reading List United Methodist Woman!! Come join me on our journey!! Peace & Joy to each one of you valuable women.

Education and Interpretation – Carol Rogers Mission U was fantastic this year as always. Most of the Southwest District women sat together and enjoyed the fellowship. I encourage you to register now for Mission u in the fall if you didn’t attend our summer one. It is October 18 – 20th. The topics are: The Call: Living Sacramentally and Walking Justly, The Roma of Europe, and Poverty. Each topic is very interesting and will touch your heart. Our Mission Study Day is fast approaching. Write

Mission Day at Missouri Valley on the 26th of

October on your calendar. The ladies there have

graciously agreed to host us and we are grateful for

that. We will learn more about the mission studies that

were presented at Marshalltown. Details of

reservations will be in the October 1 issue of Airwaves. ►►►►►►►►

Learning and getting to know our wonderful

Southwest District ladies is always a good time.

I have been compiling the reports that you have sent in and will be making my report to you at Annual Day in September. It is always fun to see all that you have been doing.

MEMBERSHIP NURTURE AND OUTREACH – Deb Volz

John 10:14-15 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me

and I know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

As United Methodist Women we have the opportunity to experience first hand what a

difference we make. We must always be ready to share concerns and experiences with one

another. Stay in touch with mail, e-mail or phone. Support those who are ill, share the loss

of a loved one, celebrate the joys and support those going through life changing

circumstances. We must be sensitive to different situations and support people in both their joy and pain.

While at Mission u, I had the privilege of meeting new and old friends. I had the experience of attending classes

on The Call: Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly and Poverty. These classes led me to share these thoughts:

How can we serve and practice love of neighbor? What is your dream for UMW? Where is the place for UMW in

the world?

Deb Volz, SW District Membership Nurture and Outreach Coordinator 228 Hwy Street, Carson, IA 51525-2001; (H) 712-484-3487; (C) 402-669-3683; [email protected]

NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE – Margot Young, Chairperson

Now in light of all that, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to revere the Lord your God by walking in his ways, by loving him, by serving the Lord your God with all your

heart and being. Deuteronomy 10: 12 (WSB)

I hope by now you have your slate of officers all ready for election day. We are still looking for Secretary, Mission Coordinator for Spiritual Growth, and one person for the Nominating Committee. Our annual ballot is on a separate page. Under our new organizational structure, the basic officers you are required to have for your local are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary,

Secretary of Program Resources, and Nominating Committee. We hope you are able to find all of those. If

you have any questions, please call me or Kathy. See you all at Annual Day on September 26th at Greenfield.

Treasurers – Sandy Viner

Interested in learning, worshipping and growing in faith and purpose? The district still has

two scholarships for “first timers” to attend Mission u in October. It truly is a blessing you

won’t soon forget! Just ask the women who attended in July.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on September 26 at Greenfield.

I want to remind you of the items we will be collecting again this year:

Be sure to check my postings included in the President’s packet with your Pledge forms for next year.

Please remember to send your 2013 remittances to me by December 7th.

Five Star Honors go to units who give in these 5 areas: Pledge, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission,

Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering.

Thank you again for sharing your Faith and Love in Action,

Social Action – Betty Frazee

The focus for United Methodist Women during the coming year will be: Immigration,

Climate Change, Domestic Violence, and Human Trafficking.

We will be hearing more about Human Trafficking throughout the year. The emphasis is on learning

to identify and report suspicious behavior to authorities. There was a seminar in Ames earlier this year, with

expectations that there will be other seminars throughout the state in the coming months. Watch for dates

and locations in your local news. I will pass along any information I become aware of.

Our conference president, Rita Vallery, shared at Mission U that human trafficking is second only to

drug dealing in income from vices. Truckers Against Trafficking is one organization working to educate those

in their line of work. Some UMW members in the East Central District are working to spread the word by

contacting trucking companies in their area and providing them with contact information.
