So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Matthew 20: 1-16a

Today, Jesus moves from Galilee to teach in Judea where he is sought out by great crowds and tested by the Pharisees on issues such as marriage and divorce. Jesus also encounters a rich young man who is unable to ac-

cept Jesus' demand that he leave his possessions to follow him. Jesus' response to the rich young man sounds very much like the conclusion we will find in today's Gospel: the first will be last and the last will be first. On the surface, the para-ble of the workers in the vineyard appears to be an offense to common sense. Those who work a longer day ought to be paid more than those who work just an hour or two. When viewed in this way, the landowner seems unfair. That is be-cause we are reading into the parable our own preconceived notions of how fairness and equali-ty should be quantified. A close read shows us that the landowner paid on the terms that were negotiated. The landowner, it seems, has acted completely justly. The parable goes beyond that, however, and we come to see that the landowner is not simply just, he is exceptionally just. He is radically just. He has given those who labored in the field for a full day their due pay. But he has also given a full-day's wage to those who worked only a single hour. No one is cheated, but a few receive abundantly from the landowner just as we receive from God more than what is merely justifiable or due. God, like the landowner, is radically just and abundantly generous. The workers who complain are made to look foolish as they lament the fact that landowner has made all workers equal. Indeed, what more could one ask for than to be treated as an equal at work or anywhere else? The parable reminds us that alt-hough God owes us nothing, he offers abundant-ly and equally. We are occasionally tempted to think that our own actions deserve more reward, more of God's abundant mercy, than the actions of others. But God's generosity cannot be quanti-fied or partitioned into different amounts for dif-ferent people. When we think that way, we are trying to relate to God on our terms rather than to accept God's radically different ways. - Loyola Press

S aint of the Week John Henry Newman, Blessed February 21, 1801 - August 11, 1890

Born in London, England, John Henry Newman studied at Oxford’s Trinity College, was a tutor at Oriel College, and for 17 years was vicar of the university church, St. Mary the Virgin. Historical research made Newman wonder that the Roman Catholic Church was in closest continuity with the Church that Jesus established. In 1845, he was received into full communion as a Catholic. Two years later he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome and joined the Congre-gation of the Oratory, founded three centuries earlier by Saint Philip Neri. Returning to England, Newman founded Oratory houses in Birmingham and London and for seven years served as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. Before Newman, Catholic theology tended to ignore history, preferring to draw deductions from first principles. After Newman, the lived experience of believers was recognized as a key part of theological reflection. Newman eventually wrote 40 books and 21,000 letters that survive. He accepted Vatican I’s teaching on papal infallibility while noting its limits, which many people who favored that definition were reluctant to do. When Newman was named a cardinal in 1879, he took as his motto “Cor ad cor loquitur”–“Heart speaks to heart”. He was buried in Rednal 11 years later. After his grave was exhumed in 2008, a new tomb was prepared at the Oratory church in Birmingham. Three years after Newman died, a Newman Club for Catholic students began at the Universi-ty of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In time, his name was linked to ministry centers at many public and private col-leges and universities in the United States that provide a community and pastoral experience for their Catholic stu-dents. Pope Benedict XVI beatified Newman on September 19, 2010, at Crofton Park in London. Benedict noted New-man’s emphasis on the vital place of revealed religion in civilized society, but also praised his pastoral zeal for the

sick, the poor, the bereaved, and those in prison.

S aint of the Week John Henry Newman, Beato Febrero 21, 1801 - Agosto 11, 1890

Discover the keys to the mystery of love and relation-ships! The Dominican cloistered nuns of Corpus Christi Monastery and guest Jim Brady will unravel this mystery

in a five-session series based on the groundbreaking “Love and Responsibility” by Karol Wojtyla (Saint John Paul II). Some of the issues to be addressed include: What makes a true friendship? How does attraction lead to either selfless love or a relationship in which someone is being used? How do I know if I am in a relationship of authentic love or just another relationship doomed to failure? If eve-ryone is made for spousal love, how is this desire recon-ciled with vocations to the priesthood, religious life or ded-icated singlehood? …and more!
