Preparation and Application

Substrate Even though the substrate is not part of the OVERCOAT SYSTEM®, as it will be the base to support and to anchor the system, it is very important to know its composition, its stratigraphy, analyze all the critical aspects and problems, in order to take all necessary measures to guarantee a successful intervention.

Surface Characteristics Surfaces must be even and without excessive roughness, on a 4m height, unevenness should not exceed 7-8 mm. Otherwise, it is necessary to even out the surface. Before application, make sure that the substrate is perfectly dry and cured (at least 30 - 45 days from casting). Make sure there is no moisture absorption from outside, no infiltrations and no rising damp. The substrate must be perfectly anchored to the substrate, free from dirt, grease, contamination by molds, fungi, bacteria, efflorescence or anything else that could compromise adhesion or the successful outcome of the job. The surfaces must be compact and solid with good mechanical and adhesive strength. They should not be excessively absorbent in order to avoid dehydration of the adhesive mortar. All foreign bodies must be eliminated.

1) SURFACE PREPARATION 1A) OLD SURFACES 1A.1) Plaster and concrete Remove any non-coherent, flaking, deteriorated part. Where necessary, restore with cement mortar the missing parts of plaster, ensuring the right volumetric integration and evenness. Restore corners and profiles with INTOCEM RIPRISTINO. Perform a high pressure washing of the surface and consolidate it with RESINPOL diluted max 30% with turpentine. Apply RESINPOL until saturation of the surface, making sure it does not vitrify superficially. After application make sure surface is completely compact and sound, otherwise apply another coat of RESINPOL .

1A.2) Old paint or renders Scrape off, manually or mechanically and remove all non-coherent parts and layers of old paint or render. If necessary, use a paint remover.

1A.3) Clinker bricks and ceramic tiles Carefully inspect the coating, and remove all parts that are not compact or well adherent to the substrate. Fill the gaps with INTOCEM RIPRISTINO (for small but deep cavities), and INTOCEM PLUS for wider areas, with lower thickness (3-5 mm). Perform hydro-blasting, sandblasting, or abrasive blasting on the coating to increase its porosity. A minimum degree of absorbency is required to guarantee the adhesion of the subsequent coat of adhesive mortar.

1B) New surfaces Make sure that the substrate is perfectly dry, free from dust, irregularities and has been adequately cured. Substrate must be compact and stable. New fair-faced concrete needs to cure at least 45 days. Before applying the insulation panels make sure the substrate is perfectly clean.

1C) Pipes and cables positioning Downpipes, gas pipes, electric and telephone cables must be preventively moved by authorized personnel, making sure to calculate a free space corresponding to the thickness of the panels, plus a minimum of 2 cm thickness.

Page 9: Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue › wp-content › uploads › ...Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue 6 aprile 2017_8.19 5/41 OVERCOAT SYSTEM® WARRANTY OVERCOAT SYSTEM®

2) WAINSCOATING AND GROUND CONTACT-AREAS It is necessary to take measures to make sure that rainwater does not come in contact with the wall, by creating a drainage gravel bed, or a barrier to rising damp. Paving and sidewalks must have adequate slope outwards and be provided with construction joint. The barrier insulating the wall from the ground must be applied before the waterproof membrane. The skim-coat applied over the insulation panels at ground level, must be done with a flexible and moist-resistant plaster, such as ELASTOCEM, and should end 20-30 cm below the ground level, making sure to connect it to the waterproof membrane. From ground up to 1 high, the insulation panels used must be resistant to soil moisture and must be positioned in the soil, as described above.

3) POSITIONING OF PROFILES Once decided where should the system start, position the base profiles for the alignment, containment and protection of the system. Prearrange the holes on the wall (diameter 6mm, depth 35 mm), 8 each linear meter, and fix with expansion anchors. Position the profiles below the window, where the protrusion of the sill insufficient (at least 5 cm), fix with expansion anchors.

4) APPLICATION OF INSULTATION PANELS WITH INTOCEM PLUS or INTOCALCE Add 5-6 l of water each 25kg in of product in a container or mixer. Pour the water while mixing INTOCEM PLUS or INTOCALCE (use INTOCALCE for natural, vapour permeable systems: OVERCOAT® BIOS, OVERCOAT® ROCK, OVERCOAT® CORK, OVERCOAT® WOOD) and mix for at least 5 min. in order to obtain a Homogeneous mix, free of lumps. Let it rest for 5 minutes before applying,

Apply the adhesive mortar along the perimeter of the panel and in 3 spots in the center in order to guarantee adhesion of the whole perimeter and center of the panel, but leaving some free surface in order to obtain a sucker effect during the application an create an air chamber between panel and wall. Minimum consumption rate of the mortar must be 4-5 kg/sqm.

Preparation and Application

Apply the panels to the surface right after application of the adhesive mortar, starting from the base profile, from the bottom upwards, by horizontal stripes, in an alternate pattern, using a rubber mallet to ensure the adhesion. Panels must be carefully positioned next to one another, in a way that joints won’t be visible. Avoid disparity in thickness greater than 2 mm and spaces in the surface greater than 2 mm. In case such spaces are left, fill them with cut parts of the insulation panel. Avoid overflowing of the adhesive mortar from the panel, as this might cause thermal bridges. On the corners the heads of the panels must be in an alternate disposition.

5) ANCHORING In all cases in which the substrate does not guarantee perfect adhesion it is necessary to apply anchors. The anchors must be ETAG 014 certified for the fixing of insulation panels on ETICS systems. The choice of the type and quantity of anchor to be used depends on the type of insulation material selected. (see Overcoat System® Summary). Once the mortar is dry, we suggest to screw the anchor in, and to not activate the percussion drill on hollow brick or autoclaved aerated concrete. Anchors must be applied in correspondence with the adhesive mortar below the panel, not on empty spaces, in order not to compromise the stability of the system.

Page 11: Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue › wp-content › uploads › ...Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue 6 aprile 2017_8.19 5/41 OVERCOAT SYSTEM® WARRANTY OVERCOAT SYSTEM®

6) APPLICATION OF CORNER PROTECTION PROFILES AND ACCESSORIES Apply all accessories profiles and corner profiles in natural aluminum or PVC, preferably with pre-assembled net, in correspondence with all the edges. To guarantee perfect sealing of the system and mechanical protection, fix them directly to the insulation panel with the adhesive mortar, then link them to the fiberglass mesh with a minimum of 10 cm overlap. Do not use galvanized or painted steel profiles.

On the corners of doors and windows it is necessary to apply diagonal fiberglass mesh to be drowned in the plaster, before the skim-coat. The diagonal mesh must be fixed so that the edges of the mesh are located directly on the corner with an angle of 45°. These meshes are usually 200x300 mm. It is possible to use pre-shaped meshes.

7) SKIM-COAT AND MESH After the application of the insulation panels, wait at least 2 days before applying the skim-coat. For the skim-coat use INTOCEM PLUS or INTOCALCE (for natural and vapour permeable systems: OVERCOAT® BIOS, OVERCOAT® ROCK, OVERCOAT® CORK, OVERCOAT® WOOD) . Dilute 25kg of product with 5-6 l of water in a tank or mixer, pour the water while mixing and then mix again for at least 5 minutes, in order to obtain an homogeneous mix, free of lumps. Let it rest for 5 minutes and then apply. Apply a uniform layer of product by trowel, making sure of creating a very smooth layer 1-2 mm thick. When the mortar for the skim-coat is still fresh apply a 155g/m2 fiberglass mesh (ETAG 004 certified), making sure it is well stretched and carefully avoiding the creation of bubbles and wrinkles. Make the meshes overlap for at least 10 cm in the junctions and drown the mesh in the plaster by stainless steel trowel. A the corner overlap the mesh without cutting it with a flap of at least 20 cm. Increase resistance of the windows corners by applying patches of mesh (approx. 20x30 cm) positioned obliquely.

.

Profiles particularly exposed to traffic up to a height of 150-250 cm must be protected with a 370 g/ m2 fiberglass mesh, or alternatively 2 layers of 155g/ m2. Before the first layer of plaster is completely dry, apply another layer, 1-2 mm thick, making sure to cover the mesh completely and obtain a uniform and smooth surface. Min. consumption for the skim coat is 1.5 – 2.0 kg/m2 each layer.

On the systems OVERCOAT® ROCK, OVERCOAT® CORK, OVERCOAT® WOOD the smoothing of the surface has to be done with INTOCALCE as follows: 1. First coat applied by notched trowel with

minimum thickness 7 mm. 2. Second coat once the first coat is dry, applied by

stainless steel until trowel the surface is completely smooth and then application of the fiberglass mesh.

3. Third coat applied by stainless steel trowel until the grid of the mesh is not visible on the surface.

8) BASE COAT After approximately 2 days for each mm of skim coat applied and in any case only once it is perfectly dry, apply the specific base coat for the subsequent finish coat (see the chart OVERCOAT® SYSTEM SUMMARY). Apply by brush or roller with a consumption of approximately 120-150 ml/ m2 in order to uniform absorption of the substrate, colour the surface, and increase adhesion of the subsequent layer.

8) FINISH COAT Apply the finish coat FASSADEN-PUTZ, QUARZITE FASSADENPUTZ, PROTEXIL® PUTZ, PROTEXIL® ELASTO PUTZ, ACCADEMIA INTOSIL after 1 day (see the chart OVERCOAT® SYSTEM SUMMARY to select the appropriate finish coat) by stainless steel trowel and subsequently smooth it to obtain a 1.5 – 1.7 mm thickness. If the finish coat is ELASTOP QUARZ, apply 3 coats by brush or roller in the colour desired. ELASTOP QUARZ can only be applied after a third smoothing coat of INTOCEM with minimum consumption rate of overall 5 kg/m2 (3 coats).

Reflectance Index

The Reflectance Index (RI) is a factor the measurement of the percentage of light that is reflected by a surface. Each colour has its own RI that depends on its hue: the lighter the colour is, the higher the RI (0% total black – 98% white – barium sulfate). This parameter is useful when choosing the colour for the finishing of a thermal insulation system, as low RI means high heat absorption that can cause cracks caused by excessive thermal excursion on the surface.

We therefore recommend to use color with a RI higher than 20%, light colours or colours deriving from cold pigments. Thanks to the chemical characteristics of cold pigments, which are IR-reflective, most of the infrared rays are reflected, and that allow us to obtain dark colours, and at the same time avoid the overheating of the surface. Below are available the RI of all the colours of the I Colori del Colore and Tecnologie per facciate colour cards.

SYSTEMS

Overcoat System®

External Thermal Insulation System with EPS panels in accordance with UNI EN 13163:2009 OVERCOAT SYSTEM ® is an external thermal insulation system, consisting of a thermal-acoustic insulation material glued and fixed to the perimeter walls, coated with a thin layer of plaster reinforced by a mesh and finished with an acrylic or acrylic-siloxane vapour-permeable render to protect, waterproof and decorate the whole system. The insulation material is stable over time, mechanically resistant, with an elastic module which makes it compatible to the wall structure and the finish coat from a dimensional point of view to changes in temperature and humidity.

It is therefore, in normal conditions, resistant to dilatation that would lead to cracks. The insulation material is fire-resistant certified class E according to UNI EN 13163:2009, and stable overtime. The finish coat is water-resistant and has sufficient vapour-permeability , with a good degree of elasticity that prevents the development of hairline cracks. It is also resistant to atmospheric agents, to light, and is able to preserve its properties overtime. OVERCOAT SYSTEM ® provides good thermal insulation to the buildings, good vapour-permeability and an adequate mechanical resistance.

OVERCOAT SYSTEM® has many advantages: High coefficient of thermal and acoustic insulation with significant savings in energy consumption

and greater living comfort in both Winter and Summer. Elimination of losses from cold bridges in structural elements such as pillars and slabs and

consequent elimination of condensation inside buildings. Increased protection against atmospheric agents and reduction of thermal expansions of

buildings, with a consequent considerable slow-down in the deterioration of buildings. Easy application with considerable cost reduction compared to alternative systems. Improvement of the aesthetic of the building and consequent increase of its value.

USES: OVERCOAT SYSTEM® is used for insulation and protecton of new buildings and for the restoration of existing buildings. The system can be applied on solid masonry brick, plastered walls, clinker bricks, ceramic tiles, bricks, concrete walls, pre-cast concrete partitions.

SPECIFICATIONS

The ETICS OVERCOAT SYSTEM® with EPS panels, certified according to European standards by ETA (European Technical Approval) norms, provides a good degree of insulation which ensure thermal stability inside the building, limiting thermal losses to the minimum. It sensitively reduces proliferation of moulds, condensation, provides good water-resistance, resistance to atmospheric agents and to movements of the substrate.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Old surfaces: 1. Surface must be sound and compact, scrape-

off and remove non adherent parts and non-suitable parts for subsequent application.

2. High-pressure wash of the surface in order to remove any residual presence of dirt and impurities, which could compromise adhesion to the substrate.

3. On old paints, plasters or non-solid surfaces, apply one coat of impregnating, consolidating solvent-based primer RESINPOL diluted with turpentine 30% max., in order to guarantee adhesion and uniform the absorption.

SYSTEM APPLICATION 1. In order to create the starting point for the

system, proceed to application of aluminum base profiles with drip.

2. In case the systems starts from the ground, it is necessary to apply XPS panels for the first 60 cm of height, in order to block rising damp.

Page 19: Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue › wp-content › uploads › ...Catalogo OVERCOAT SYSTEMS EN Catalogue 6 aprile 2017_8.19 5/41 OVERCOAT SYSTEM® WARRANTY OVERCOAT SYSTEM®

3. Apply EPS panels IIP- certified and conform to the norm UNI EN 13163:2009, with adequate thickness and compression coefficient (panel dimensions: 1000x500 mm, density 120 kg/m³, EPS120 – thermal conductivity λD 0.034 W (mK) – vapour permeability μ=30-50). Fix them to the substrate using INTOCEM PLUS, one-component adhesive mortar in powder, mixing 25 kg of product with 5-6l of water. Mortar must be applied on the perimeter of the panel and in 3 spots in the centre in adequate amount to fix the panels and create an air-chamber between the panels and the wall. Min. consumption 4 kg/m2. Panels must be applied with an alternate pattern and perfectly in line with the wall.

4. Application of polyurethane foam and, if needed, of patches of insulation material in the open joints (bigger than 2 mm) between one panel and the other, in order to protect the system from infiltration and insulation losses.

5. Application of gasket sealant tape in correspondence with the installation of the panels on windowsills in order to protect them from driving rain.

6. After 2 days from panels application, apply no. 6/m2 Ejotherm anchors, fir for the substrate and suitable in length. Apply them following a “T” pattern perforating the panel with the special Ejot screw tip. Do not activate the percussion drill on hollow bricks and AAC. We recommend to apply Ejotherm STR screw-in anchors together with the EPS washers to avoid thermal bridges or exposure of the anchors once the system has been completed.

7. Fixing of corner protectors in aluminum or PVC with fiberglass mesh on all corners using INTOCEM PLUS.

8. On window and doors corners apply strips of fiberglass mesh 200x300 using INTOCEM PLUS. The edges of the strips must be positioned directly on the corner with an angle of approximately 45°. It is possible to use pre-shaped meshes.

9. Smoothing of the surface with INTOCEM PLUS with interposition of an alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh, weight 155 ± 3% g/m2. Application of a second layer of INTOCEM PLUS for full coverage and leveling of the first layer, with an overall consumption of 3 kg/m2, in order to obtain a uniform surface and provide the necessary mechanical resistance.
