For the fifth year in a row ‘Castle can reflect positively on a job well done in terms of the delivery of a fantastic “Let’s Play Volleyball Festival.” The number of club members involved in the delivery of this event for around 200 youngsters was fantastic , and backed up by the various fundraising efforts of club members over the weekend it made for a pretty special one for the club!

Meg’ GB debut& 2012 dream!Whilst many ‘Castle members spent Friday 10th June preparing for the LPV tournament the next day, our very own Meg Viggars was making her senior GB debut in Sheffield against Portugal!

Meg made her first appearanceon court in this series of two friendly matches. For the Friday match Meg came of the bench in each set, taking on the setting role and adding height and strength to the team from a blocking perspective.

The Friday match ended in a 3-0 win for the British team and after the match Rod Stockwell, who was on statting duty took the first image (right) of Meg in her full teamuniform! Rod commented on how well Meg linked with her hitters and fitted into the team on court - not bad for a 17 year old debutant!

In the second match on the Saturday Meg was again used as a player coming off the bench to have a positive impact upon the team performance – something that she again did with aplomb to help the team to a 3-1 win.

The Great Britain ladies team are clearly on the up with some great results this summer – let’s hope Meg stays in the squad and gets her chance on the biggest stage – the Olympic Games!

NSVC Annual General MeetingThe ‘Castle AGM took place on the evening of Saturday 11th June at Madeley High School following the end of the LPV festival at around 5pm in the sports hall with over 20 clubs members present.

Annual reports were presented for the club chair, treasurer, secretary, for each of the three NVL squads, as well for the junior girls and boys sections. The three primary roles of the club management committee were voted back into their positions unopposed so Colin Roberts will be chair, Margaret Dobell treasurer, and Rachel Viggars secretary in the 2011-12 season. This means a combination of around 60 years combined service by these three in these roles! The club constitution and other key documents can be downloaded from the club website in our handbook at www.nsvc.co.uk/content/about-us

If you want to get more involved in the club or take on a role, please contact club chair Colin Roberts on [email protected]

‘Castle!

For the second consecutive month we are able to announce good news on the sponsorship front as PASS (Partners Assuring a safer Staffordshire) have granted Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball Club a further £1000 for the coming year!

Rod Stockwell and Richard Gurgul attended the presentation evening on behalf of the club on the 13th June and accepted the award.

Player of the year awards announcedThe much sought after most valuable player (MVP) awards were announced on Saturday 11th June for the three NVL squads. Voted for by fellow team members these awards areseen as a great honour within the squads, and this years winners were:-Ladies – Paige Nelmes (pictured right with her award!)- Men1 – Adam Bradbury- Men2 – Sam Shenton

All three of these players are teenagers – a pretty accurate reflection of the club’s talented young playing personnel at the moment!

Also announced were the Junior members of the year – the winners of these prizes are not necessarily the MVP on the court but the awards are designed to recognise the value of their contribution to the club as a whole – the winners were Harriet Roberts and Ross Thompson.

Fundraiser Car Wash: 11th JunePlayers from the men’s first and second NVL teams spent their day at the LPV tournament washing cars to raise funds for the club! As you might expect, this often led to more water going on the lads than the cars at times, but as the photos below show – a really good job was done on all of the cars that were washed! A total of 22 cars were washed, meaning a total of £110 profit for the club accounts!

Well done lads!

New Head Teacher at Madeley checks out NSVC

New head teacher at MadeleyHigh School Martin Kerridge took time out in his first few weeks at the school to come to the LPV tournament and see the impact that NSVC with students from the school and other local schools.

NSVC’s positive relationship with Madeley is crucial to the strength and success of the club and we are keen to ensure that this goes from strength to strength in the future.

‘Castle run’s successful Injury Prevention & Management workshop

Thanks to the hard work of ‘Castle committee member and club welfare officer Libby Bellamy NSVC ran a sports coach UK Injury Prevention and Management workshop for club members at Madeley High School on the 15th June. As the

workshop was run as a closed event just for club members the content was all tailored just for Volleyball so of great benefit to our coaches and volunteers who attended!

Monday Night Social VolleyballThese sessions have now been up and running for over a month and have a regular turnout of around 30! Although the current set of sessions is due to finish at the end of the summer term, due to its’ success the club is negotiating to carry them on in the autumn on a different night of the week! Watch this space

The sessions are for over 16 year olds and it is intended that this section of the club will grow and ensure that we cater for the whole local volleyball community. If you are 16+ and fancy some casual fun volleyball, or a parent who fancies a go to see what all the fuss is about please come along to Madeley from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Monday nights this month!

City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th Form College: Volleyball AcademyOver the past 4 years NSVC has developed a great relationship with City of Stoke-on-Trent College in Fenton, growing their Talented Athlete Programme (TAP) to provide 3 training sessions per week for players. Whilst many ‘Castle Juniors will opt to attend other colleges, the 6th Form College in Fenton is the only one with this formal link to the club, and is the only place where players get the chance to train so regularly locally.

Junior Boys Head Coach Will Roberts said, “The link with Fenton is fantastic for our young players. I did my ‘A’ Levels there back in 1998-2000 and only wish I’d had the chance to train for volleyball at college as often as they now offer through TAP. It wasn’t until I started my degree at Loughborough that I got anywhere near the quantity of training needed to play at a decent level .”

Potters ‘Arf: ‘Castle come 5th...... In the relay race!! The ‘Castle relay team did a great job in the Potters ‘Arf marathon being the 5th relay team to cross the finish line – with the first four teams all being from athletics/running clubs! The team was hit by the late withdrawal due to injury of Sam Allen, leaving Will Roberts to run the final two legs! The stages of the race were as follows:

• Stage 1 - 3.3 Miles Dann Williams• Stage 2 - 3.4 Miles Dave Lovell• Stage 3 - 4.7 Miles Will Roberts• Stage 4 - 1.7 Miles Will Roberts

The team’s time was 1:42:19 – a pretty respectable performance and one that all three players are determined to beat next year. They raised a total of £135.45 for the club coffers.

The lads regrouped in the pub for a celebratory pint and were delighted that they were able to walk out of the pub (due to soreness not being drunk!) after an hour or so!

Dann Williams commented, “I went off a bit quick at the start and suffered quite badly, I ended up running up Victoria road with my arms up in the air as it relieved the pain!”

Dave Lovell was the only runner not to have been born and raised in the Potteries and he found it to be a great opportunity to see the sights, “Anchor Road between Longton and Park Hall is a really big hill, I’m knackered!”

Will Roberts was the only team member to have done a half marathon before so doing the relay should have been easy, “I’ve not done much exercise since the season started and I found it really tough... When I saw the sign for ‘heart break hill’ I was really cursing Sam for pulling out!!”

Coaching change for Men 1After three seasons as head coach of the men’s first team Craig Handford has stepped down from this role. Craig will continue coaching in the club, focussing on the technical development of the junior boys through their Monday night sessions and supporting Rod Stockwell with the men’s second team. NSVC wasted no time in replacing Craig by appointing Dave Lovell and Will Roberts as joint coaches of the side.

Volleyball England Junior Competition ReviewThroughout June, members of the Volleyball public have been encouraged to contribute to the Junior Competition Review. As President of the Volleyball England Schools and Youth Commission this review has been led by our own Will Roberts. “It has been a really enjoyable challenge taking on this task – most people in the sport comment that they want change in this area but when different models of pretty radical change are put forward this view often changes. I’m fascinated by the variety of views and am confident that the review will result in a better range of competition opportunities for young players.”

Sainsbury’s UK School Games 2011: Sheffield‘Castle members are yet again aiming to take part in the SUKSGs which this year take place in Sheffield. Players aim to be selected for England Central or North, and we have Ant Viggars, Rosie Mankee and Charlotte James involved in team staff roles, and Rod Stockwell on the stats team!

Let’s Play Volleyball Festival 2011

Action from the u11 2v2

Boys and girls matches in the u11 2v2

The LPV Tournament has become a key date in the 'Castle calendar, and now in it's fifth year, reflects the growth of the club, particularly with referenceto developing young players. This was a day to keep fingers crossed that the rain would avoid Madeley, and somehow it did, allowing five hours of match play, involving dozens of youngsters. With the help of a team of age group competition co-ordinators, this was a very relaxed tournament, with plenty of time to socialise, enjoy the BBQ, buy cakes.......and have the car washed!!

Amongst the spectators was the new Madeley High headteacher, who was very impressed with the fun, skill, energy and organisational abilities on display, with youngsters playing, refereeing, scoring..........and enjoying. I reflected with him that so many youngsters had played in our first and second LPVs, and gone on toInternational Honours.

So what of future LPVs? Build on the fund raising and fun raising aspects, and find ways to involve as many past and present players, and parents, as possible.
