Anti-Bullying Performance: The Magic Words Performers took to the stage to reinforce a strong message that we are continuing to deliver to our students about Bullying. The Magic Words performance allowed our students to discover the true meaning of using magic words – “sorry”, “thank you”, “please”, “excuse me”. This performance also allowed our students to understand the importance of having good values and showing respect. Students also learnt the value of having safe and respectful interactions online. National Day of Action Against Bullying Competition A huge thank you to all our students who took part in either our K-2 Colouring in Competition or 3-6 Design a Poster Competition. Harmony Day – Everyone Belongs Last Thursday, we celebrated Harmony Day. It was fabulous to see such great participation from all students – wearing either traditional dress, colours of their cultural background or orange – the colour of Harmony Day. Thank you to parents who provided food for our community morning tea, held at the conclusion of the parades. It was fabulous to recognise the cultural diversity that exists within our school.

Digital Security Presentation Senior Constable Rob Paterson will be delivering an important presentation to families for our Year 5 and 6 families. This presentation is highly valuable in informing parents and offering them suggestions on how to protect kids from cyber bullying and online predators. As a Youth Liaison Officer in our local area, Senior Constable Rob Paterson is aware of current trends in our local community and how we can collectively, as a school community address these. Please note that this is a completely different presentation to the one held by Dr Kristy Goodwin held last week.

Further information about how to register for his event will appear in next week’s newsletter

DIGITAL SECURITY PRESENTATION Wednesday May 16, 7.00pm-8.30pm Castle Hill Public School

‘Digital Security’ is a parent/carer presentation covering privacy /reputation management and cyber bullying. Cyber safety is the primary non-academic problem that schools and young people experience today. Parents and carers must know how to use technology and should know what to avoid, where to seek help and what their children are doing online. Presented by Senior Constable Rob Paterson, Youth Liaison Officer at The Hills Local Area Command. As YLO for the last ten years, Rob works with Young Offenders, at-risk children and delivers educational programs and safety information to 65 schools in The Hills LAC.

Castle Hill High School Concert Band Visit Our school will have a special visit and performance by the Concert Band from Castle Hill High School on Wednesday 11 April. The performance will take place from 8:30am onwards under the COLA located near the school canteen.

Literacy Program Letter/Sound: Classes are learning u, n, c this week.

Please continue to revise all sounds taught so far, especially when reading at home. This includes: a, m, s, t, i, f, d, r, o, g, h, l

Sight words: Classes will be focussing on learning the Blue Words in class for the rest of Term One. The best results occur when a child revises their sight words everyday – this revision only has to be short and fast but focused! It is extremely beneficial for students to continue to revise their Golden Words at home, even if they have moved onto other levels. Students are required to recognise the words immediately within a number of different contexts, fonts and books. We suggest you cut up the words and present them to you child in a different order each time. This avoids students remembering the order of the words on the page

Blue Words - an, go, by, do, if, my, me, no, or, up

Suggested activities to learn Sight Words: make a second copy of the words and play a game of memory.

Fine motor skills activities for home: practice cutting skills. Students are learning to hold the paper steady with their non-dominant hand. They then use the same hand to move the paper-scissors stay straight, pointing away from the body. The students are learning to slow down when cutting and to cut on the lines.

Numeracy Program Students are learning to add or subtract by using two groups of objects and counting the total. They are learning to combine, separate and compare using everyday language eg/makes, joins, combines, with, all together etc. We are encouraging the students to explain and demonstrate how an answer was obtained and to investigate different strategies of solving the one problem.

This week students are investigating collecting and representing data in the form of picture graphs.

Star of the Week!

Stars of the week are KB: Melody, KG: Sapphire, KK: Frances, KC: Anita, KJ: Isaiah, KT: Bradley.

Canteen Visiting the Canteen, using appropriate manners and the etiquette of spending is a learning curve for Kindergarten. Teachers are talking to their classes about only spending their money for themselves and not buying treats for their friends. This goes hand in hand with learning to refuse if a friend offers to buy them a treat. When possible, please try to give your child the exact amount required, this helps avoid the temptation of spending the remaining amount on someone else. There are been a number of cases of students spending all their money on a friend or a friend “helping” themselves to someone else’s money. We ask that you reinforce the who, what and when of buying at the canteen-who: buy for themselves only, what: what is appropriate to buy, and when-at lunchtime only.

Dates for the Diary:

• End of Term Celebration: Tuesday April 10, 9:30am • The Magic Words Performance: Wednesday May 16, (permission notes to be returned asap)

Our library provides all students with the opportunity to borrow 2 books each week. Students in years 3 to 6 come with their class teacher for 20 minutes to select their books. Students in kindergarten to Year 2 have library lessons and borrowing with the Teacher/Librarians each week. Library borrowing is an essential and important part of the school week and all children are encouraged to borrow books to read both at school and at home. Each class has a borrowing day and the children, with the help of parents, need to remember to bring

along their library bag so that they can borrow books for the week.

We have an incredible range of books for the children to borrow, ranging from graphic novels, to many non-fiction books about topics such as dance, gemstones, sports, mammals and weather. We also have a comprehensive collection of picture books for both the younger and older students. The children are encouraged to talk to us and recommend new books that they would

like to be included in the library collections. For your convenience, we also have library bags available for purchase for $2.00. Here are the library days for classes K-6:-

With the encouragement of teachers and parents, children have the best chance to foster

a love of literature and reading.
