Background and challengesUnlike regular solar panels, the benchmarking of
integrated panels is a complex undertaking in which
a large number of parameters need to be taken into
account. As a result, the technology used is very
comprehensive as well. To make the data gathered
by SEAC easily accessible and workable, numerous
challenges had to be faced:
• Because solar panels come from various suppliers and
have different specifications, the collected data is very
diverse.
• Measurements are conducted every second of the
day, resulting in huge quantities of data that have to
be logged systematically.
• The thus collected information has to be made
available daily to multiple users, with varying levels of
access.
• To protect intellectual property, the security of the
database has to meet the highest standards, with
secure logins for limited and assigned users only.
CUSTOM-MADE SOFTWARE APPLICATION EXCELS IN FLEXIBILITY AND SECURITY
At the Solar Energy Application Center (SEAC), an independent knowledge institute based in Eindhoven (the Netherlands), integrated solar roof panels are tested. As the solar panels are integrated and not only placed on top of your roof they offer – in addition to turning solar power into electricity – other key benefits, such as keeping roofs watertight or soundproof. To ensure their high quality, SEAC measures numerous test parameters with the aid of approximately 500 sensors. A custom-made software application developed by Test & Measurement Solutions (T&M Solutions) makes the huge amounts of acquired data easily — and securely — accessible, both on- and off-site.
Eindhoven, the Netherlands
“This database tool enables our researchers to access the measuring results of our integrated solar panels at any time in a very flexible way, working remotely from their own desktops. It serves as an example of T&M Solutions’ expertise and reliability ”
Roland Valckenborg, Project Manager at SEAC, www.seac.cc
WHILE THE SUN SHINES: OFF-SITE ANALYSIS OF ASTRONOMICAL AMOUNTS OF DATA AT SEAC
The T&M solutionTo tackle the above challenges, T&M Solutions developed a
custom-made database that processes the collected data every
night.
This information is then made accessible to SEAC researchers in
a secure and flexible way.
At the user’s request, data is processed on the server and only
the results — in the form of figures and graphs — are viewable.

ResultsThe database tool provided by T&M Solutions plays a pivotal
role in SEAC’s data acquisition and retrieval process. Within
the space of a single night, the powerful solution is able to
process huge amounts of data. The additional tools supplied by
T&M Solutions make simple analysis a walk in the park through
clear graphs and infographics. Furthermore, the database has
been created in such a way that it can be easily expanded and
adapted by the client, as and when needed.
