18 GEN ART LOS ANGELES FASHION WEEK SHOW

24 DOWNTOWN LA FASHION WEEK EVENT AT THE MOCA

26 THE FASHION INDUSTRIES GUILD’S “WOMAN OF THE YEAR”

Those of us that have been in the apparel industry for quite some time now essentially know the ropes. (And even then, you can still teach an old dog new tricks!) But what about those who are just star ting out and are looking for some guidance, or some folks to network with? All around the world there is an organization to help: the Fashion Group International (FGI). For decades, the Los Angeles regional group has held the position of

second largest membership next to New York’s founding headquar ters.

Fashion Group International boasts 33 global chapters from Toronto to Paris and Sydney to Seoul. A vibrant and engaging executive board is moving Fashion Group Los Angeles full speed ahead and into the future. From award-winning programming, to cutting-edge social networking and online marketing, to the region’s new electronic magazine and online site – The Style Repor t – launched a few weeks ago to great acclaim, FGILA consistently exceeds expectations within its own organization – and within the industry itself. Membership reads like a who’s who of the industry – from clothing, jewelry, handbag and accessory de-signers; media, merchandising and manufacturers; to executives, industry leaders and tastemakers of achievement.

Our photo events for this month are extraordinary, as always! Stars from the apparel, real estate and financial industries shined on an unseasonably beautiful day at the Mann Foundation’s 4th Annual Mann of The Year Awards benefiting The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Mount Sinai. Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week presented a vintage fashion show and charity event celebrating 20th Century Glamour at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The Fashion Industries Guild recently honored Barbara Fields, owner of the Barbara Fields Buying Office, as “Woman of the Year” at its 52nd annual charity dinner dance at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Fashion Group International Los Angeles, in coopera-tion with Stonefield Josephson, presented a program entitled Staying Alive: The Fundamentals of Making Money in a Down Market. The Gallery LA and Kpr, Inc. recently presented LA Fashion Weekend, highlighting some of the city’s premiere designers: Raw 7, Post’age Denim, and Samora Designs at the Cooper Design Space in Los Angeles. And lastly, Gen Ar t presented their LA Fall Fashion Show during Los Angeles Fashion Week in conjunction with BOXeight Productions at the historic Los Angeles Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

To celebrate the “dog days of summer,” we’ve compiled a “beachy” issue for you this month—from retro sunglasses to great beach bags and the most scandalous of swimsuits! And lucky for you west coasters, these are things that you can utilize year round! Just around the corner, if you’re planning to be in the New York area, don’t forget the Mann Foundation’s 5th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, August 10th at the Glen Head Country Club out on Long Island!

Regards,

Jeff Mann

The inception of Fashion Group Inter-national hails from a time in our history where women were not often found in positions of executive power. But in the late 1920’s twelve groundbreaking ladies – headed by none other than El-eanor Roosevelt – gathered for lunch to create a women’s business organiza-tion soon to become a powerhouse in the apparel industry. It was there that Fashion Group International (FGI) was born. Incorporated as a non-profit in New York in 1930, new regions be-gan to expand across the nation, first in Cincinnati in 1932 and next in Los Angeles in 1935.

After WWII, the United States was on a euphoric high as it rebuilt its infrastruc-ture on the way to becoming a global superpower. The motion picture indus-try was booming – and the lights shone on Hollywood as the place to turn for the newest fashion trends. L.A.-based designers – many known only by single names like “Adrian” and “Renie” – were securing studio contracts left and right as social activity focused on the escap-ism of entertainment. Perhaps this was the moment when our modern-day obsession with celebrity culture was formed. Lifting the morale and spirits of people after six years of war, the world became fixated on elegant clothing and beautiful movie stars.

During this time, a visionary idea was brewing. In 1947, the inventive business-women of Fashion Group International of Los Angeles (FGILA) resoundingly voted to pursue the establishment of a “muse-um costume department” to house the treasured studio gems of the last three decades. The largest museum in L.A. with a prominent reputation was the Los An-geles Museum of History, Science & Art (LAMHSA) – now the Natural History Museum. The women of FGILA went to

partment – and supporting Costume Council – exist today.

From this illustrious history, a mod-ern breed of industry leadership has evolved. As of 2009, Fashion Group International boasts 33 global chapters from Toronto to Paris and Sydney to Seoul. And for decades, the Los Ange-les regional group has held the position of second largest membership next to New York’s founding headquarters. A vibrant and engaging executive board is moving Fashion Group Los Angeles full speed ahead and into the future. From award-winning programming, to cutting-edge social networking and on-line marketing, to the region’s new elec-tronic magazine and online site – The Style Report – launched a few weeks ago to great acclaim, FGILA consistently exceeds expectations within its own organization – and within the industry itself. Membership reads like a who’s who of the industry – from clothing, jewelry, handbag and accessory design-ers; media, merchandising and manufac-turers; to executives, industry leaders and tastemakers of achievement. And the list continues to grow. With pro-grams directly targeted to their discern-ing membership, the L.A. regional group creates as many as two events per month – from cocktail networking soi-rees to trend reports to business pan-els to costume, design and architecture tours. These programs provide unparal-leled networking opportunities.

A smattering of recent events just this year have included a behind-the-scenes Oscar-nominated costume tour at the FIDM Museum – a finan-cial panel on making money in a down economy – FGILA’s annual scholarship gala awarding thousands of dollars to emerging design talent – cocktail net-working socials at hip venues like the

the elder statesmen on the LAMHSA Board of Governors to suggest their out-rageous idea. Met with chuckles and pats on the head, but a “yes” to move forward, a Los Angeles institution was born. For the next thirteen years, the women of Fashion Group Los Angeles slowly grew the LAMHSA Costume Department to epic proportions – from film treasures, to original garments from the 1800’s, to historical apparel from prominent Cali-fornia families – the collection continued to build.

In the early 1960’s, the “art” portion of LAMHSA broke away to become its own museum – one slated to embrace the complete history of art across the globe. In 1965, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened its doors – and a few months later, the women (and now men!) of FGILA decided their burgeoning Costume Department at LAMHSA needed a proper home. What better venue to solidify its historical importance than the new, gleaming art icon that was the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)? Combining Fashion Group Los Angeles’ costume collection from LAMHSA with some textiles LACMA had recently acquired, the new LACMA Costume and Textile Department was created. The execu-tive board of FGILA began planning galas, benefits and parties to help raise more funding so the new department would have not just a physical location, but the ability to restore and research garments and facilitate and curate the creation of proper costume and tex-tile exhibitions. LACMA’s Costume & Textile Department is now celebrated among the top five costume collec-tions in the world. It is only through the efforts, brilliant minds and tireless work of the executive board and mem-bership of Fashion Group Los Angeles, that LACMA’s Costume & Textile De-
