ANDREA NIETO BFA Fashion Design - Textile Design Assistant Designer, Adidas Innovation Team

“The Academy has a very creative and inspiring environment. San Francisco is a great city to learn and grow as a designer because it is full of inspiring music and musicians, art and artists, and designers and engineers. I like to think of the Academy and San Francisco as a perfect melting pot for collaboration, new ideas, and innovation—and it has some of the best instructors from around the world that have experience working in renowned fashion houses. I only have positive memories from Academy of Art University, a place where you can really build your own set of tools to go into the workforce with full confidence.

“I met a senior design recruiter from Adidas after my first Academy of Art University runway show in San Francisco. A year later, he got back in contact and I forwarded him my latest portfolio. Within a couple of days I was offered a six-month internship at the North American headquarters in Portland. I started my internship with the Adidas Innovation Team after graduating from the Academy and at the end of the internship, I was offered a full-time position.”

Our Alumni

KENNETH NING2007 BFA Menswear Design Alumnus

Kenneth Ning’s senior menswear collection was shown at Academy of Art University’s Graduation Fashion Show as well as at New York Fashion Week in September 2007. He then interned in the men’s design department at Michael Kors before joining Macy’s to design their young men’s private label American Rag. After working at Macy’s for five years, Ning left to launch his own t-shirt brand, Premium NYC, and his menswear collection that he launched in fall 2014.

“The School of Fashion allowed me to see the endless possibilities in this industry, especially being able to watch and learn from such highly talented faculty and peers. Academy of Art University equipped me with the skills I needed to go straight into the workforce and hit the ground running. Everything from organizing timelines to drawing flats by hand and on the computer, carried over seamlessly from student life into working in a corporate design environment.”

Study Abroad OpportunitiesOne of the best ways to learn about the world is to see the world. We will delve into the numerous ways in which we can elevate your experience in class and beyond through our exciting Study Abroad opportunities.

STUDY ABROAD WITH US Our Study Abroad programs are designed to help broaden your artistic education by experiencing art and culture first hand. You can do this by taking advantage of Academy of Art University’s Study Abroad program. The Academy offers exciting opportunities that you can explore during your journey toward your degree.

The Liberal Arts: Seminar in Europe is a three-week intensive traveling course in which you will study and write about the architecture and art you encounter in some of Europe’s greatest cities and collections. Lectures will supplement each museum visit, and you will be encouraged to examine your own creative instincts in order to develop pieces for your student portfolio.

The Fine Art Intensive in Italy opportunity will take you to Florence, Italy, for seven and a half weeks during our summer semester. Classes led by Academy instructors will meet Monday through Thursday, and museum visits and daily excursions to small nearby Italian towns will lead you to seek and find the wealth of beauty that lies within Tuscany. On one of your weekends, you will have the chance to take your artistic exploration farther by taking a weekend trip to Venice, which is included in the program.

Disciplines covered during this intensive program include painting, printmaking, illustration, photography, and art and architectural history.

If you have an interest in fashion, you should look into our Fashion Scholarship Exchange. Offered through the Sister City Scholarship Exchange Program, the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University awards scholarships to study in Paris with Studio Berçot and L’École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Check in with your director to make sure you are eligible for this competitive scholarship.

For more information about these Study Abroad opportunities, including cost and visa matters, visit www.academyart.edu/academics/study-abroad.

Online EducationOur revolutionary online courses provide the same rigorous education that we offer on campus with greater flexibility. Study on your own time, at your own pace. Take full- or part-time classes. Let nothing stand in your way of pursuing your creative goals.

Since 2002, Academy of Art University has helped thousands of online art students from all over the world realize their professional and creative ambitions.

“ Online classes at the Academy of Art University allowed me to stay in Dallas and still connect to a world of creative inspiration. – Lenworth “Joonbug” McIntosh

MFA, Fashion Merchandising”

LIEZEL GRACE PAGALA MFA Fashion Design

“My original plan was to take six months to save before moving to San Francisco to take classes on-site at Academy of Art University. But my path changed when my adviser told me that through the online program, I didn’t have to wait until I moved to begin taking classes. With the incentive of graduating sooner, I began taking classes online, which allowed me to continue working part-time. This has lasted now for more than five semesters! With the kind of 2D and 3D work that is required of us, I have ample work cataloged, which has helped me create a dynamic electronic portfolio.”

BERT MATIROSYANBA Fashion Journalism

“I chose Academy of Art University because it’s the only school that offers a degree in Fashion Journalism, and pursuing my studies online enables me to balance working and living in New York while simultaneously and seamlessly receiving a worthwhile education. The educators are very involved and constantly challenge me to push myself; I’m forming a foundation on which to build a career.”

How The Courses WorkCREATE YOUR OWN CLASS SCHEDULEWhen you take online courses at the Academy, you are free to manage your own time; there are no set class schedules that require you to be online at specific times of the day. Course content is divided evenly across 15 modules spread out during a semester. Each module’s coursework—instructional videos, audio-enhanced slideshows, digital documentation, interviews, and more—is made available at the start of each module period.

ENGAGE YOUR PEERS You may work and study independently, but that does not mean you cannot call on the support of your online classmates. Each course offers a class discussion area where students and instructors can freely exchange thoughts, post work, and provide or receive creative feedback. The discussion area’s sole purpose is to give you and your peers the opportunity to support one another’s development as artists.

To find out more, contact an admissions representative or visit www.academyart.edu/online-education.

SUBMIT YOUR WORK & RECEIVE FEEDBACK We have developed our own custom Learning Management System (LMS) to specifically teach art and design. The LMS is a centralized web tool that lets students and faculty easily interact and exchange digital assets. The LMS whiteboard feature allows instructors to mark up your work and provide detailed feedback, even audio commentary. The LMS also serves as your central hub for class news and updates, grade information, ESL support, scheduling one-on-one tutoring sessions, and a host of other features tailored to make your online education as rich as possible.
