For the people who need us, Rochester General Health System is where compassion leads. We are committed to improving the health of the people who live in our region by providing high quality, comprehensive care, convenient and timely access, and extraordinary service, In order to ensure that we can provide this kind of healthcare to Rochesterians for years to come, we need your help.

The needs of the people we serve are constantly changing

and growing. In order to continue our commitment of

service, we are asking you, our friend and our neighbor, to

help us invest in the facilities, equipment, programs, and

people we need to make Rochester General Health System

the place where compassion leads for decades to come.

You have the power to do something today. Over 100 years

ago, George Eastman’s generosity spearheaded a movement

that revolutionized the way healthcare was delivered in

Rochester. By supporting Rochester General Health System,

you will join a group of modern-day philanthropists, leaders

who, like those from Eastman’s era, transform the way your

friends, family and neighbors receive healthcare.

The Legacy of Hope Campaign is a historic undertaking that

will continue what our distant predecessors started. This

campaign will allow us to modernize our facilities, expand

our services, and adopt the techniques and practices

necessary to provide the people of our region with the

healthcare they need and deserve. These improvements

are part of a long term plan that will cost our health system

over $350,000,000 over the next 10 years.

We need you to join this movement and continue our

Legacy of Hope in Rochester! We are asking you, the

community, to provide collective philanthropic support

of $55,000,000.

We Need You.

For over 160 years, Rochester General has represented our community’s commitment to caring for one another by bringing hope to the people who need us. As Rochester’s population surged in the middle of the 19th century, community leaders decided to take action.

At the time, hospitals were largely misunderstood and for many, they were a frightening

concept. Despite this general fear, in 1847 a group of concerned citizens decided that a hospital

could help address the glaring need for healthcare in their growing city. This bold and thoughtful

decision was the beginning of our Legacy of Hope. Rochester’s first hospital—inspired by need

and brought to life by philanthropy—was born.

Today, Rochester General Health System has evolved into one of our nation’s finest integrated

healthcare systems. Although times and technology continue to change, we continue to work

toward the same mission that inspired our hospital’s original founders. It is our mission and your

generosity that continue to propel our legacy into the 21st century.

Rochester’s First Hospital We have been:

Your Community, Our Promise.

Rochester General Health System has grown into an integrated healthcare organization comprised of six affiliates, 40 Medical Groups, over 800 medical staff members, a workforce of 7,000 and an Auxiliary of over 600 volunteers throughout the Greater Rochester region. With so many different elements, we continue to honor one promise: to provide care for those who need it, where and when they need it most. Our promise is to remain the place where compassion leads.

We extend this promise to everyone in our region, including:

Our families...— The World Health Organization has designated RGH as one of only three “Baby Friendly”

hospitals in New York State.

Our neighbors in need...— We are a leader in sharing the responsibility for undercompensated and uncompensated

care, with almost seven percent (7%) of our budget, or $30 million annually committed to

caring for the underserved.

— We are a leader in providing service for vulnerable members of our community who do not

traditionally receive care. Our mission based Clinton Family Health Center has decreased

emergency room visits by 24% through the institution of Open Access Scheduling.

Our neighbors in Wayne County...— Our rural affiliate, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, is the sole provider of care to the 90,000

residents of Wayne County and serves as the RGHS extension in the Finger Lakes Region.

Our seniors...— We provide both short and long term care through our three main

non-acute geriatric care programs– Hill Haven, DeMay Living

Center and Independent Living for Seniors.

Our children...— We operate five school-based health centers and

provided both medical and mental care to over 16,000

students in 2008.

— In December 2010, we opened the Louise and

Henry Epstein Pediatric and Young Adult Emergency

Department.

Our new neighbors...— Upstate New York became home to nearly 3,200

émigrés in 2010 alone, Rochester General Health System

is the sole provider of health care services for new

refugees entering the Greater Rochester area.

Our patients who need world-class care...— We are the only hospital in the region among

Thomson/Solucient Top 100 Heart Hospitals and have

been honored nine times since 2000.

— Becker’s Hospital Review named our Rochester Heart

Institute a Great Cardiovascular Program.

— Our Robotic Surgery Program was the first of its kind in Upstate New York. Currently it serves

as a global observation center, and ranks in the top four percent (4%) in volume in the nation.

— Our Lipson Cancer Center was named as an American College of Surgeon’s “Outstanding

Cancer Program.”

— We are a National Magnet Hospital for nursing

excellence, an honor granted to fewer than three percent (3%) of hospitals.

“Your staff at RGHS has an amazing ability to balance compassion and toughness. They appear to truly care about the patient as an individual. Perhaps your behavior and

action are part of the job, but their ability to

treat patients and concerned families as individuals with compassion and care is

priceless.”

Your Needs, Our plan

Looking towards the future, to keep our promise, we must constantly and relentlessly work to adapt to our commu-nity’s changing needs in the context of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. Today, we face many challenges, all of which must be addressed for the future while still delivering high level of care in the present.

— Patient comfort and dignity are directly connected to the modernization of our facilities.

Most of our facilities are between 20 and 30 years old compared to the national average of 10

years old. We need to modernize, replace and expand our facilities to meet our high standards

of care and exceed our patient’s expectations.

— We need to bui ld surgical facilities for the future. Increasing demand for Ambulatory Surgery

services is why we need facilities that will allow us to meet that demand expand and today’s

state-of-the-art (OR) is between 400 and 800 square feet—large enough to accommodate the

latest equipment and technology. The people of our community need and deserve to have

access to the “OR of the future.”

— Nationally and locally, the number of senior citizens is increasing and we are committed

to caring for them. As the number of senior citizens continues to increase, so will the need

to provide extraordinary healthcare for seniors. Rochester General Health System has three

affiliates dedicated solely to senior care: Hill Haven Nursing Home, DeMay Living Center,

and Independent Living for Seniors.

— Wayne County is an underserved community. Newark-Wayne Community

Hospital is the sole provider of hospital care for the 90,000 residents of Wayne

County. The residents of rural Wayne County are counting on us to bring the

same level of care that is provided at Rochester General Hospital to Wayne

County.

— There is a growing need for dialysis services in our community. As the number

of patients with chronic kidney disease continues to grow, we need to have the

ability to accommodate them.

— Transformations in technology hav e resulted in less invasive therapies and

improved diagnostic capabilities for treating patients. In order to remain on the

cutting edge, Rochester General Health System is committed to bringing its patients the

most advanced treatments and the best technology available to enhance patient safety,

dignity and care.

Continuing Our Commitment to Western New YorkWe are a health system nationally recognized for quality, value and clinical excellence. We constantly strive to effectively anticipate and plan so that we can provide the most cost efficient, high quality healthcare possible for patients. We also focus on preparing ourselves to embrace tomorrow’s advances in medicine and healthcare.

With this in mind, we are now embarking on an endeavor

that will allow us to continue our

commitment of providing high level, compassionate care to

the people who call Western New York their home. Be-

cause of our past success in building a cost efficient health

system with a full continuum of care, we are well posi-

tioned for success in this historic undertaking.

We have developed a strategic ten-year plan calling for an

investment of over $350,000,000 for technology, facili-

ties and programs. Our Trustees have commissioned the

Foundation to raise $55,000,000 in philanthropic support

over the next five years through the Legacy of Hope Cam-

paign. The plan is multi-fold, encompassing a moderniza-

tion of our facilities to make patient care even more safe,

comprehensive, comfortable and efficient; an investment in

innovative technology that will define the future of medi-

cine; and a commitment to serving our community in areas

of demand and necessity.

By partnering with our stakeholders, we will move closer

to being the healthcare provider of choice in our region.

This campaign will strengthen and expand our presence in

the community, and continue our mission of providing high

quality, compassionate care to our patients.

“Philanthropy must be a major part of the financ-ing and planning of our health system. I cannot see any government windfall ever coming in to cover the growing and changing health-care needs of this re-gion. Philanthropy has always been important, but I think never more important than now.”
