PROGRAM & SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN

Page 2: 2014 Heroes Case Statement

We are thrilled to announce The Salvation

Army Kroc Center’s 6th Annual HEROES

Program and Scholarship Campaign,

an effort that will bring a community of

dedicated volunteers together to meet

the goal of raising $90,000 to help more

than 2,000 neighbors in need.

Joan Kroc’s vision was to provide world-

class programs to children, adults and

seniors in our service area, regardless of

their financial circumstance.

Mrs. Kroc’s generous endowment pays

for 40% of the Kroc Center’s $9 million

annual budget. Her vision was that the

community would help generate the

remaining $5 million needed to balance

the budget each year through program

service fees, membership dues, and

donations to campaigns like this.

In the coming year the Kroc Center

will offer scholarships to nearly

2,000 people in our community,

totaling nearly $200,000 in financial

assistance. These scholarships will

allow children, families and seniors

to participate in programs that

encourage them to discover their

talents, and promote creativity,

wellness, spiritual discovery and

community engagement.

In order to continue changing lives we

need the support of the community

members like you!

THE CAUSEThe program and scholarship fund

allows children, families and seniors to

make a crucial difference in their lives

by providing basic needs including:

childcare during the summer so single

parents can work, exercise and wellness

to the ill and injured, support and

social engagement for the elderly and

emergency food to the poor.

Help us uplift our community by

Mrs. KrocJoan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder

Ray Kroc, recognized this as a community

that was in desperate need of a safe

gathering place, a place with facilities and

trained professionals to nurture children’s

social skills, arts appreciation and athletic

potential. She described the Kroc Center

as being a beacon of light and hope in the

community.

Meet Ricky.Ricky is a seven-year-old Day Camper

who loves to skateboard, is good at

math, is clear and vocal about his

faith in God, has many friends, takes

Taekwondo, and hopes to visit the

Grand Canyon very soon.

For Ricky, a scholarship to The

Salvation Army Kroc Center’s Day

Camp meant his first chance to see

men as positive role models, his first

opportunity to make friends, a place to

express and grow his faith, a chance to

learn to read and to find out that he’s

good at math and loves skateboarding.

Ricky lived in six different homes

in seven years and came from an

abusive situation. He arrived at his

foster mother Heather’s door pale, thin,

dehydrated, and with the weight of the

world on his tiny shoulders. At seven

years old, he didn’t know how to read,

and his only two friends were his brothers

who he was now separated from.

Heather, who is low-income, researched

activities to involve Ricky in outside of

school and her mom suggested the Kroc

Center. That’s when Heather read about

the scholarship program and learned she

could afford to send Ricky to Day Camp.

“Being able to get a scholarship meant

that Ricky would finally be able to see

that not all men are going to hurt him,

and that he would be able to learn social

skills to participate with other children

in a more safe and appropriate way,”

recalled Heather.

Through the structured environment of

the Day Camp and special care from the

staff who knew Ricky’s story, he acted

out less, engaged with other children,

learned to read, and made life-long

memories.

In the year Ricky has lived with Heather,

he has attended Day Camp every school

break—all thanks to those who support

the scholarship fund.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“IT’s a bright sunny thing in his life that he’ll never forget.”

Heather says giving to the Kroc Center’s

scholarship fund is like giving life to

children like Ricky who wouldn’t have

opportunities otherwise.

“It’s such a wonderful place and it’s a

place that people can feel confident

giving money to because it’s being used

in the right way. I’m evidence that it’s

being used in the right way,” she said.

Heather also says the Kroc Center has

changed the trajectory of Ricky’s life.

“It shows him that the world is not a bad

place. It’s a bright spot in a dark world.

He came from abuse and torment and

starvation and it’s a bright sunny thing in

his life that he’ll never forget.”

The Heroes Campaign made all Of this possible last year

Parents witnessed their child make the winning basket for the Kroc Center Saints Basketball team--but more importantly watched their humble reaction, which demonstrated a true understanding of sportsmanship.

Children spent the summer meeting new friends, swimming, playing sports, doing art projects, learning to skateboard and ice skate, and engaging in character building curriculum. Day Camp scholarships provide a lifetime of fond memories.

Children interested in acting got a role in the Kroc Kids Junior Theatre Company’s production of Cats”. Others learned to play the piano or guitar, or had their artistic talent nurtured in fine arts class.

Seniors stayed fit in group land and water exercise classes, engaged in social activities with one another, took computer classes, got their taxes done for free, gardened with toddlers, and developed new friendships.

Making a National ImpactMrs. Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $87 million to build the first Kroc Center in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego. Sadly, she passed away a little more than a year after it opened. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.8 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 27 in different stages of development.
