Principal’s Report

Dear Parents & Carers,

I know how important it is for you to get up to date

and accurate information about what’s happening at

school, in your child’s class, with a sport team or

about an upcoming excursion or event. To share that

information with you we use paper notes and

newsletters in addition to using email and the school

website at:

But, now that most people have mobile devices that allow them to access information wherever they

are it makes sense for you to have access to school information wherever and whenever you need it.

The diagram below shows how you can get access to new apps available for a range of mobile devices

that will give you instant access to online information from the school. Currently, the apps give access

to the newsletter through the SchoolENews service. However, the good news is that very soon the

apps will be used to send more information about school activities, messages and alerts in addition to

the newsletter. To be able to use these free services you need to download the appropriate app from:

Important Reminders Parent Teacher Interviews are being held during this week and next week. Don’t forget to come at the

time agreed with your child’s teacher. If you haven’t notified that you want an interview, you can

arrange a suitable time for early next term by contacting the class teacher.

The Y3-6 Athletics Carnival Track Events will be held at Bexley Oval on Tuesday 25 June.

The K-6 Assembly which will include the first public performance by the new school band will be held in

the hall at 11.30am on Friday 28 June.

The last day of Term 2 is Friday 28 June. All children return to school on Tuesday 16 July to commence

Term 3.

Congratulations To the Koinaris, Tsiros and Karnib families who were the lucky winners of the draw conducted last week

from all the families who had paid the School Voluntary Contribution. We hope you enjoyed something a

little extra from the Gift Card prizes. My thanks to all families who have greatly assisted the school

through making this annual payment.

To every Kindergarten student who took part in and enjoyed the farm excursion on Tuesday and to the

parents and teachers who made it happen so successfully for them.

To all students who received reports this week that showed improved achievement standards and

‘personal bests’ in many areas of their school work.

And thank you to the parents and teachers who have made time available to share important information

about student progress for Semester 1 during the current interview period.

Premiers Debating Challenge- 3rd Round Debating Dynamos

On 11 June, the Carlton Debating Dynamos battled it out in their 3rd debate to win

against Canterbury South Public School. Susan, Rayanne, Alexander and Natalie

travelled with Mrs Niko to Canterbury South Public School. The topic for the

debate was “Should we impose life bans on sportspeople who cheat?” A flip of the

coin resulted in Carlton being the affirmative team, and the Canterbury South

being the negative team.

Thirty minutes left and still, we didn’t have a team line and we hadn’t written

anything on our palm cards. With only 25 minutes left we were stressing and panicking. We started writing and

thinking quickly. With only 5 minutes left we were finishing off our arguments and suddenly, time was up! We

couldn’t believe how quickly the time passed. Although we were nervous, we knew that we had a good team line

and strong augments.

The debate was about to begin. One by one, speakers from all the teams spoke confidently, convincingly and

with expression. After everyone had spoken, we waited anxiously for the result, hopefully that our arguments

and rebuttals would lead us to victory in this debate.

Shock and relief came to our team when we were announced as the winners. Amazing, 3 wins out of 3 debates!

We received valuable feedback from the adjudicator, and had a light snack. We laughed all the way back to

school.

We would like to thank Canterbury South Public School for inviting us to their school to debate. We would like

to thank Mrs Niko for driving us there and back and Mrs Niko, Miss Flowers and Mrs Mateski for all of their

hard work in training us to be the debating team we have become. Now we are more relaxed and ready to accept

the challenges ahead of us.

ATHLETICS TRACK CARNIVAL YEARS 3-6

Tuesday 25 June, Term 2, Week 9

On Tuesday 25 June 2013, the school will be holding the Athletics Track Carnival at Bexley Oval. Permission

notes need to be signed by parents with any medical details listed and returned to the office money collection

box. Cost for the carnival is $4.50. They will be expected to wear school sports uniform, a school hat and

sunscreen. All children should bring their recess, lunch and a bottle of water. The canteen will be available to

provide snack food and drinks only. All parents are invited to attend but must make their own way to the oval.

If you wish to take your child home early, please ensure your inform the student’s roll teacher prior to leaving.

AGE RACES are raced in the age your child is turning in 2013.

Our Athletics Carnival Field Events will take place at school on Monday 22 July (Week 2, Term3).

Presentation of awards for athletics track and field events will be held during stage 2 and 3 combined assembly

on Friday Week 3 in Term 3.

School is a place of fun and joy,

a boy in my class is called Roy.

There are lots of nice people there,

But there are also some bad people who don’t share or care.

At the end of the term we have a treat,

although there is no popcorn to eat.

There is lots of art to see in the hall,

But not the ones you’ll see in the mall.

So this is my poem on the topic ‘School’,

I’m writing this because I think school is cool.

NAIDOC Week Performance


Mumps cases on the rise

NSW Health is today reminding young adults to check their immunisation status, particularly before they

travel overseas amid a rise in the number of cases of mumps being reported in NSW.

Director of Communicable Diseases for NSW Health, Dr Vicky Sheppeard said there were 15 reported cases of

mumps during May, most were young adults, and clustered in several regions of NSW. As not everyone who has

mumps will see a doctor and have a test, it is likely that there are many more cases of mumps in the community

not notified to NSW Health.

Dr Sheppeard said initial symptoms of mumps include:

Fever

Loss of appetite

Tiredness and headache followed by

Swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands, especially near the angle of the jaw.

“To prevent the spread of mumps, children and adults should have two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella

(MMR) vaccine also provides good protection against measles and rubella,” Dr Sheppeard said.

Mumps was once a common childhood disease, but most children are now protected due to high vaccination

rates. However, a significant number of young adults may have missed receiving two doses of MMR vaccine in

childhood, as two doses were not routinely offered until the 1990s.

"Many people in their 20s, 30s and early 40s will not be immune, so it is particularly important they check their

status with their doctor and get vaccinated if they are not sure," Dr Sheppeard said.

“Mumps can be quite a serious infection for adults. Complications can include swelling of the testicles in males,

and rarely inflammation of the brain, the lining of the brain and spinal cord, pancreatitis and hearing loss.

Mumps infection during pregnancy can result in miscarriage.”

"Although very rare, mumps can also cause sterility in males.”

Mumps takes two to three weeks to develop after exposure to an infected person, and people are infectious a

week before and up to nine days after swelling of the glands.

Mumps is spread when a person breathes in the virus that has been coughed or sneezed by an infectious person,

or by direct contact with their saliva.

"This is a timely reminder to parents that immunisation is the best protection against mumps. Children should be

vaccinated on time with MMR vaccine at 12 months and again before they turn four years of age," Dr

Sheppeard.
