Volgens mnr. Willie van der Schyffwas hy en sy skoonseundie oggend om-streeks 09:00 besig om ‘n suurle-moemboom te snoei toe die by Frey opdie hoofslaagaar in sy nek gesteek het.Aangesienhulle bewuswasdat hy aller-gies is vir bysteke, was hulle binne mi-nute by die hospitaal waar hul huis-dokter die nodige medikasie toegedienen met hartmassering begin het. rie van Niekerk, het die Preston-vrouehulle weer goed van hul taak gekwyt ty-dens die onlangse VLU-konferensiewat op 5 Maart op Lichtenburg aange-bied is.Lede van VLU-takke van die Sonne-

blomstreek, wat die Fochville-area in-sluit, die Platina-streek, wat uit takkein die Rustenburg-omgewing bestaan,en die Ver-Wes-streek, wat dele van

Noordwes Provinsie tot by Christianainsluit, het tydensdie byeenkomskrag-te gemeet.Op die ou end het die Preston-tak

met die beker vir die meeste punte indie foto-kompetisie weggestap.“Ons het ook vir die derde agtereen-

Die bood-skap is,wanneermensdie boodskap-pe wat daarop volg lees, deur ’n onin-geligte kind gestuur nadat sy meisiegekla het dat JJ en ’n ander seunhaar‘slaan’ by die skool.Na die eerste boodskap, het onge-

veer vyf gr.10-seuns op JJ afgestormtoe hy op 19 Maart uit sy kunsklasgestap het. “Ek weet wie hulle is,maar ons is net kennisse,” vertel dié14-jarige, klein , teruggetrokke seun.Hy vertel dat hy en sy vriend tussen

Ah, I get the chills just thinking of theway He suffered to break the chains ofdeath. Many of us are living like we aredead, a walking corpse and that is onlybecause we don't understand the loveof Christ.

But there is good news from thegraveyard, there’s an empty tomb in thecemetery! It’s the tomb of Jesus Christ.This is God’s good news. Deathcouldn’t hold Him, the grave could not

keep Him and He is the Lord of life, theKing immortal and eternal. How did Hedestroy death?

He could only conquer death by en-tering the realm of death, yanking thekeys from the hands of the devil, un-locking the door, and marching out onEaster Sunday triumphant over thegrave.

He died like we die. He was reallydead, actually dead. He wasn’t partlydead or mostly dead. He was as deadas any person could be. And from thatstate of death God raised Him back tolife. He himself walked into that darkvalley alone. He faced cold death andlooked into its awful face. He stareddown death, broke its power, andwalked away victorious and now thatvictory is yours! Let us remember whatEaster is really about this holiday, andlet us start searching for God, insteadof Easter eggs!

Merafong’s pensioners are not too oldto have some fun.

This is the view of the Department ofHealth, who reminded the pensionersof this through a special function lastweek.

The organiser of the function, Mr Si-phiwe Hlatswayo of the Department ofHealth in Carletonville, says health offi-cials decided to stage a special beautypageant for the elderly to promote a he-althy lifestyle amongst pensioners inmerafong. The event was held in theCarletonville Civic Centre on 19 March.

“Many elderly people suffer from di-seases such as hypertension and dia-betes and we wanted to help them tokeep fit,” Hlatswayo told the Herald af-ter the event.

To ensure this, the event’s organiserssecured prizes for the three most vi-brant pensioners. Those who enteredhad to model traditional and casual we-ar.

Residents of Carletonville, Fochville

and Khutsong respectively walked offwith the first, second and third placesof this competition.

Only people of 60 years and oldercould enter in the competition.

“Our oldest competitor was 91 yearsold and is one of three people of thisage in the area who are still very active.There are also people in Khutsong whoare respectively 105 and 100 yearsold,” Hlatswayo indicated.

“We are very happy that the functionwent well. The pensioners were happyand so exited about the event. Althoughit was the first time that such an eventwas held in Merafong, we are continual-ly trying to promote awareness of chro-nic diseases amongst the elderly,” saysHlatswayo.

He added that the pageant was madepossible by the provincial governmentand that further music and sportevents will be held in the area to promo-te healthy living amongst residents.

Hlatswayo also indicated that donati-ons from business in the area couldhelp secure prizes for other events.

Elderly people and a variety of dignitaries, such as Ms Linda Mbenyana, the gender anddisability coordinator of the Merafong City Local Municipality (seated at the back), attendedthe event.

These two pensioners showed that they stillhad a lot of energy.

People driving along theP111-roadbet-ween Carletonville and Westonariawould have noticed a lot of unusual ac-tivity in the West Driefontein area re-cently.The reason for this is that contrac-

tors working for the Merafong City Lo-cal Municipality are busy laying a newwater pipeline to connect a brand newreservoir to Blybank.Residents of this town had until now

received water directly from the RandWater pipeline through old mining wa-ter pipes that had been in use sinceBly-bank was established decades ago.These pipes were getting old and themunicipality obtained money from thenational government’sMunicipal Infra-structure Grant (MIG) system to builda new reservoir that would ensure thatresidents of Blybank will have an ade-quate water supply for years to come.The new reservoir will also ensure thatthere are three days’ backup water incase of an emergency.The project kicked off in January

and if all goes according to plan, it willbe completed by the end of April. Thenew reservoir is the first reservoir tobe built in the municipal area in thepast ten years and has a capacity tohold 2,5 million litres of water.While one set of contractors are still

busy with the final touches to the reser-voir, another has been busy digging atrench and building a pipeline connec-ting the reservoir to Blybank. The wor-kers completed a tunnel underneaththe P111 road through which to lay thepipes this week. The laying of pipes are

also continuing elsewhere along theroute, which leads downhill to Blybankat a fast pace, despite the fact that extrasoil had to be brought in to properlycompact over the new pipeline.More than half of the workers used

in the project are local residents whoreceived special training and certifica-tes for the knowledge that they gained.These workers were appointed by themunicipality and their new skills canalso be used again in other projects.In themeantime, themunicipality al-

so had tomake a plan to stop illegalmi-ners from breaking a pipeline connec-ting the municipal and Rand Water sy-stems just underneath the mainreservoir just outside Carletonville.This reservoir is situated just uphillfrom the the four way stop at the 007shopping complex. As a result of theproblems, a new undergound line, thatis not easily accessible to thugs, has

been laid to again connect the systems.Themunicipality is currently busywith

water infrastructure upgrading pro-jects to the value of about R45 million.

Straatname bly ‘n groot probleem vir residente

Die Herald dra dié week ‘n berig oor nuwe ak-sies van die Merafong-munisipaliteit om wa-terlewering in die omgewing te verbeter.

Wêreld-waterdag is die afgelope week gevieren baie mense kon met dié viering weereensoor die belangrikheid van ons waterbronnenadink.

Hoewel inwoners nie altyd met alle opsigtevan die munisipaliteit se dienslewering tevre-de is nie, is die meeste inwoners eens dat diewaterlewering in ons area baie goed is.

Verskeie ander munisipale areas, insluiten-de ons aansienlik blinker buurstad, Potchef-stroom, het die afgelope tyd onder hewige wa-terprobleme deurgeloop. In sommige voor-heen vooruitstrewende dorpe in Mpumalangamoes inwoners al vir weke op ’n slag sonderwater oor die weg kom. Die mees algemeneverskoning is gewoonlik dat die munisipalitei-te ‘nie die geld’ het om die nodige onderhoud-werk te doen nie.

Wel, in Merafong word daar nie net onder-houdwerk gedoen nie, daar word inderwaar-heid heeltemal nuwe infrastruktuur ook aan-gelê, iets wat in sommige ander dorpe maarnet iets is waarvan inwoners kan droom.

Intussen het ons dorp ook blou- en groen-druppelstatus wat aandui dat die lewering vandrinkwater asook rioolsuiwering van die bes-te in die land is.

Sonder water kan daar nie lewe wees nie,en die feit dat ons munisipaliteit dié belangri-ke diens baie goed kan lewer, verdien vir hullebeslis pluspunte.

Hoewel ander waterverwante problemesoos rioollekke, die besoedeling van watermet gemors en die mynbesoedeling waarvoorons area veral bekend is, steeds meer aandagkan geniet, kan inwoners bly wees dat hullenie soos sommige ander oor skoon drinkwa-ter hoef te baklei nie.

Our human ideas of truth andlife and love is weak and will fadeand disappear altogether whenwe are done one this earth. Whatwill prevail? Even our faith andeverything we did and all theknowledge we accumulated willbe gone. What will continue?

Only our love for God, our lovefor each other and our love forthose who don’t know Him. He

is in us to love. He is love, accor-ding to 1 John 4:16.

And as we live in Him our lovegrows more perfect. Such lovehas no fear. We love because weexperience His love for oursel-ves, not just hear about it. Jesusis eternal love and eternal life.When we radically obey Him, wewill know Him intimately, andwe will have much love to give.

Those who obey God’s wordtruly show how completely theylove Him, says 1 John 2:5.

When we believe and start thejourney of love, a natural outflowwould be to listen to Himthrough His Word, the Bible.The Book is living because itpierces the heart through theHoly Spirit when we read andlinger on it for ourselves conti-nuously.

Jesus and brings the mystery ofHim into our hearts.

VerledeVrydag was werkspanne vir ’n groot deel van diedag in die omgewing van die Leslie Williams-hospi-taal besig om takke van bome aan die kant van diepad korter te knip.

Dié groep het ook die bome so gesnoei dat dietakke nie meer tot in die padoppervlak steek nie.

Sover Wysneus kon sien, het die groep letterlikvan boom tot boom beweeg en elkeen mooi bekykom te sien of dit nie dalk ’n probleem kan wees watiets aan gedoen kan word nie.

Hierdie brief verwys na die nuwe padmerke wat aan-gebring is op die ry-oppervlakte van die N12 vanaf dieR500-kruising tot by die Bank-afdraai.

Padveiligheid en die beskerming van padgebrui-kers is en bly ’n prioriteit.

Die nuwe padmerke het ten doel om motors watregs afdraai te beskerm, maar dit skep verskeie ergegevare vir verbygaande verkeer. Groot hoeveelhedeverkeer word sonder waarskuwing gekanaliseer in ’nenkelbaan met ’n slap “S”.

Die genoemde onaangeduide skielike veranderingin vloei van die verkeer is nie net ’n enorme kopseervir groot vragmotors en vir bestuurders wat nie be-kend is met die pad en die omgewing nie, maar ookvir gereelde padgebruikers van die N12.

Kan die verbreding van die padoppervlakte by diebetrokke afdraaie met ’n addisionele baan nie oor-weeg word nie, ten einde die vloei van verkeer nogsteeds te laat vlot en ook nog vir die voertuie wat naregs draai die nodige beskerming te bied?

Tans is die nuwe padmerke gevaarlike kuns vir allepadgebruikers!

Hierdie brief verwys na die skrywe van die Beheerlig-gaam van Laerskool Fochville soos gepubliseer in dieHerald, gedateer 21 Maart 2013, en ander vorige rele-vante korrespondensie.

Dit is duidelik uit die genoemde skrywe asook an-der voorafgaande skrywes dat hier ’n proses van ver-ontskuldiging aan die gang is.

Die feit is dat al die prominente rolspelers groot fou-te gemaak het in die hantering van die aanslag op Afri-kaans in die skole van Fochville. Individue en groepe-rings is teen mekaar afgespeel en die werklike bedrei-ging soos deur die Gautengse Onderwysdepartementdaargestel, is klaaglik op die agtergrond geskuif. Me.Barbara Creecy sit sekerlik nou nog en lag vir hierdieklomp onbeholpe “Afrikaans-sprekendes” van Foch-ville wat met mekaar baklei, eerder as om die uitda-ging gesamentlik te takel?

Dis nou te laat om mekaar te “shame-&-blame” virdit wat reeds gebeur het en deel is van die verlede.Die vraag is of daar geleer is uit die foute van die verle-de? Hoe gaan die voortgesette bedreiging vir Afri-kaans in Fochville se skole vorentoe getakel word?Gaan eie belang weereens voor groepsbelang gestelword? Gaan realistiese en praktiese denke bo emo-sies seëvier?

My opinie is dat die kans bitter skraal is dat diebedreiging vanuit die Gautengse Onderwysdeparte-ment deur ’n gesamentlike front beveg sal word. Ons“Afrikaans-sprekendes” het mos laas saamgestaan op’n partytjie waar daar nie stoele was nie! Hoop regtigek word vir ’n slag verkeerd bewys!

Waar is die DA se Matrone en Jooste van die Noor-de? Waar is NG Fochville-Noord se drie musketiere?Of val die beskerming van Afrikaans as onderrigtaalnie binne die bestek van hulle politieke landskap nie,of binne die teologiese regverdiging van Belhar nie?

Wat egter weerhou word is die feit datdit nie die enigste strategie was nie.Daar was en is konkrete alternatieweli-ke en uitvoerbare oplossings ook opdie tafel. Die samesmelting oplossing iswel deur Laerskool Fochville voorge-hou aan hulle ouers as die volhoubareoplossing – waarom? Laerskool Foch-ville sou in hierdie proses absoluutniks moes prysgee of opoffer nie. Laer-skool Losberg aan die anderkant soualles moes prysgee. ‘n Leeftyd se ge-skiedenis, herinneringe, trots en op-bou aan ‘n skool wat vir menigte kind,ouer en onderwyser na aan die hart gelêhet deur die jare. In ruil vir wat ? Abso-luut niks!

Laerskool Losberg se beheerliggaamhet met ‘n mandaat van hulle ouers elkedenkbare en moontlike alternatief totsamesmelting ondersoek om sodoendedie voortbestaan van Laerskool Los-berg verseker.

Dit is ’n feit dat Laerskool Losberggesien word deur menigte as die ouklein skooltjie aan die punt van diedorp. Liebenberg teen-woordig was, is mnr Habbig ’n geleent-heid gegun om Laerskool Losberg seouers toe te spreek, wat hy ook gedoenhet. Arguments flew back and forth thisweek after opposition parties in theMerafong City Local Municipal Coun-cil walked out of last week’s councilmeeting after they allegedly did not re-ceive adequate time to prepare for pro-ceedings.

The council meeting of 20 Marchstarted in disarray when members ofvarious opposition parties, led by theDA, decided to walk out of the meetingbefore proceedings fully got underway. As a result of this, opposition par-ty members did not take part in anawareness event against the abuse ofwomen and children that was held aspart of the coucil meeting.

According to the DA’s Whip, Ms An-nett Ackerman, councillors belongingto this political party were very unhap-py because they received some of thedocuments that be handled in thecouncil meeting only late the Sundayafternoon before the meeting. The lastof the documents were only handedout to them while they were in caucusjust before the meeting started.

“It was just impossible to workthrough the more than 850 pages ofthe documents before the meetingstarted. We are being held accountableby our voters to play a meaningful rolein the council, but cannot do so if wedo not have time to properly study thedocuments that will be discussed.

“According to the municipality’s ownRules of Order we must get such docu-ments five working days before the or-dinary council meeting during whichthey will be discussed,” Ackerman toldthe Herald on Tuesday.

According to Ackerman, she raisedthese issues bothering the DA mem-bers with the Speaker, Mr Ramothobi

Letheya, before they walked out. In theend members of other opposition par-ty members also joined the DA in theirprotest action.

Ackerman also indicated that it wasnot the first time that important coun-cil documents were received too latefor proper perusal before a meeting.

“During a Section 80 committeemeeting last month some ANC mem-bers also walked out because we hadnot received the necessary documentsin time,” says Ackerman.

According to Ackerman, last week’sproblems partially originated from thefact that the meeting was scheduled tobe held only on Thursday this week.She says that the Speaker later calledand informed her that the meetingwould be held earlier because of theschool holiday.

On Tuesday the municipality’s poli-tical spokesman, Mr Slums Magodie-lo, responded to the claims.

“A normal Council Meeting wasscheduled for 29 March 2013,” Mago-dielo says. “The Speaker, in conjuncti-on with the Chief Whip and Whips ofCouncil rescheduled this meeting for20 March, a date that would be moresuitable in view of the Easter period toallow people who wanted the opportu-nity to travel to do so safely. All partieswere thus aware of the rescheduledmeeting. The original date of the mee-ting, 28 March 2013, was also adverti-sed in the local newspaper. On the 15thof March an amendment notice was al-so published in the Herald to informthe public that the date of the councilmeeting has been rescheduled to 20March 2013.

“During the meeting the councillorsraised a point of order regarding theissue in terms of the Council’s Rulesof Order. The Speaker, as Chairperson

of the Council, con-sidered the point oforder and ruled, al-so in terms of thesaid Rules of Order,the said Rules of Or-der provide that thelate delivery of do-cuments will not in-validate the procee-dings of a meeting.Some councillorsthen exercised theirprerogative not toattend the meeting, which thereafterproceeded,” he added.

Magodielo added that the agendadiscussed during the meeting was notaltered, but there were two adden-dums issued to the agenda. One ad-dendum contained policies that were

already discussed by all councillorsduring a workshop on 15 March. A lar-ge part of the documentation also con-sisted of documents such as the draftbudget that, although it was tabled forthe meeting, will only need input for fi-nal approval at the end of May.

As part of the proceedings, all coun-cillors, officials and members of thepublic who attended the meeting recei-

Children from Khutsong South werethoroughly checked up by professionalnurses as part of a special campaign bythe Department of Health recently.

According to the spokesman of theDepartment of Health in West Rand Dis-trict, Mr Sandile Gwayi, the West RandDistrict Health Services in collaborationwith Gauteng West Department of Edu-

cation conducted a successful SchoolHealth Awareness campaign from 4 to 8March. The campaign, which was alsoin line with the government’s integratedschool health policy, was aiming to pro-vide a comprehensive package of inte-grated school health programmes to pu-pils of the new Khutsong South PrimarySchool. “The campaign targeted lear-ners from grade R, 1, 4, 8, 10 and thoselearners who are repeating classes.

At least 626 learners were screened ofwhich, 189 learners were diagnosedwith various health problems,” Gwayitold the Herald. He added that 13 of thescreened learners were found to havemissed their important Tetanus Diphe-ria (Td) immunizations and were refer-red to the Khutsong South clinic. A totalof 250 learners were also provided withdignity packs that consist of toothpasteand brushes, Vaseline, ointment and sa-nitary pads. “Parents of some of thechildren with serious health and socialproblems were called by the nurses and

social workers who advised them ontheir children’s conditions,” Gwayi ad-ded. Health talks, screeningsandasses-sments were also done by the program-me directors of various programmes.

They insured that the children recei-ved vision tests, hearing assessments,oral health assessments, proper nutriti-on, speech assessments, height andweight determinations, physical asses-sments, mental health assessments,screening for Tuberculosis and chronicillnesses as well as psychosocial sup-port.

Spesery-bolletjiesSif saam 4 x 250ml koekmeel, 25ml bak-poeier, 3ml sout, 15ml gemengde spese-rye en5mlkaneel. Vryf in 190gmargarienen voeg by 150g sagte bruinsuiker en500ml vrugtekoekmengsel; meng deeg-lik. Klits 1 eier en 375ml melk en voeg bydie droë bestanddele om ’n sagtemengselte verkry. career spanning almost 25 years, mostof which have been spent at SibanyeGold (formally known as Gold Fields)has participated and excelled in anumber of sporting codes over theyears, mostly soccer and cricket.In the mid 2000’s GB, as he is affec-

tionately known on the Mine was bit bythe ‘Comrades bug’ after going througha very difficult personal ordeal in hislife.He yearned for a something big that

would challenge him both physicallyand mentally hence his undertaking torun Comrades. To date, GB has suc-cessfully completed five Comrades ul-tra-marathons.Around the same time he began com-

rades he developed a passion for cy-cling and swimming and this was whena close friend said “You think you arereal toughdon’t you?You run, you cycleand you swim. I have a suggestion.Whydon’t youput these three sporting activ-

ities into one event, the Iron Man.”Graham took his friend up on the

challenge and the rest is history.To date GB has competed in every

The Carletonville swimming club tookon the waters of the Bosveld mile thatwas held in Bela-Bela in Limpopo thispast Sunday and what an awesome wayto end the swimming season.

Famous for its scenic location, theBosveld Mile, which is part of the EliteSwim Series, attracted over 800 swim-mers from all across the country in-cluding many well-known open-waterswimmers.

With rolling lawns extending to theedge of sparkling, clear water, youwould be hard-pressed to find a morepicturesque setting for a race.

The swimming categories were forU/13 years and under, 14 to 30 yearsand of course for 31 years and older.

There was also a 200m swim for chil-dren 9 years and younger.

The popular 800m ‘Half-Mile’ prom-ised cash prizes to the first three maleswimmers and the first three femaleswimmers to finish the race. Medalswere awarded to everyone who com-pleted the event.

Most of Carletonville coach GerrieGrove’s swimmers started swimminglate in January but they swam like prosfrom the moment they hit the water. Allof them finished the race in good timesand he is ecstatic about their perform-

ances.Grove would like to thank the par-

ents for their great support through outthe season. He is also happy about thesuccessful season they had and he isvery proud to be their coach. He wishesthem well and hopes to see them backin the waters in October.

Local swimmers end seasononhighnote

The local swimmers who finished the Bos-veld mile in Bela Bela are at the back DanielKruger, Gerrie Grove (coach), ChristiaanLouw and Dewald Louw. In the front areTiaan Wolfaard, Divan Wolfaard, BiancaJaneke, Kriston De Gouvela , Eric De Gouve-la, Alison De Gouvela and Nikita Kruger.
