Sunday

Fly out of the snow and into the sun, as we excitedly make our way from Toronto to our paradise destination in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia. A scenic 1 hr taxi ride from the airport gets us to our base at one of the most prestigious marinas in the Caribbean, Rodney Bay, where your yacht awaits you. Upon arriving, you will have an opportunity to check out your boat before the luggage and provisioning is brought aboard. Take off your watch, you are now on island time, leaving the cold and the snow far behind. Tonight we dine out at a local restaurant!

Monday

After breakfast we sail from Rodney Bay to Petite Anse on Martinique, a charming and photogenic village, not yet overrun with visitors. This beautiful area is a secure, quiet and scenic place to anchor. You land on a fancy new waterfront walkway and enter an old picture-postcard town filled with local art, a wonderful boulangerie, patisserie and crème glacerie, a local market, exceptional restaurants offering local inventive and delicious cuisine with Creole flair, and some great locations for a drink.

Tuesday

We sail for Fort de France, the capital of Martinique. We will anchor beside old Fort St. Louis and go ashore in the evening for dinner at one of the numerous restaurants that are close to the waterfront. If need be, we can pick up any provisions that we might have forgotten in Rodney Bay.

Wednesday

We sail back south from Fort de France to Grande Anse d’Arlet, another picturesque village right next door to Petite Anse. The village is set on a white sandy beach with magnificent towering mountains behind. There might be some dugout fishing pirogues still remaining in this old fishing village. A fancy new walkway runs behind the beach and adds to the beautiful ambiance of this stop where we will anchor in crystal clear water.

Thursday

Today we set sail back to St. Lucia. Our next stop is the port of Castries. The town boasts a big market with food, handicrafts and a fancy array of clothes with Caribbean flair. The Place Carenage has a duty free liquor store where we can stock up on any short supplies. Here we anchor and dinghy ashore for fun shopping and sample one of the many restaurants.

Friday

On this day we up anchor and sail further south – this time to Soufriere and the Pitons. Soufriere is a small picturesque town set amongst palm trees dominated by the towering Pitons. Moorings maintains a dock specifically for us, their patrons. Soufriere abounds with restaurants and places to snorkel. This is an ideal location for some quiet time where we will reminisce about our adventures and kick back and relax in true Caribbean style!

Saturday

We head back to base at Rodney Bay. By this point you will find yourself wholly content at your achievements in progressing your big boat sailing experience and skills, with warm memories of the great times and friends you have encountered throughout your adventure. You will no doubt be unwilling to leave this paradise, but don’t worry, there is always next year and another new sailing escapade to look forward to.

Base FacilitiesThe moorings base at Rodney Bay, St. Lucia is a pleasant ride from the airport. From here, there are a range of bareboats, between 35ft and 51ft, available. Set in a secluded lagoon, the marina is the heart of St. Lucia’s yachting industry. Rodney Bay boasts all the facilities you could wish for: well-stocked chandleries, a supermarket for provisions and a variety of restaurants.

Local InterestFrom the moorings base, a 2-mile walk will get you to the old fort built during the Napoleonic wars. It had a signal base at the top of the hill that was used to communicate by heliograph with Diamond Rock, just off the French island of Martinique. The base also had a hospital, storerooms and a barracks. Scuba diving is also popular here, as it is throughout the Caribbean, and is easy to arrange locally.

Food & Drink (Provisioning)G’s mini-mart offers provisions at the Marina. More extensive provisions are available across the road at Glace Supermarket, a 10 minute walk away. In addition, there is a large supermarket close to the base, which can be reached by a short dinghy ride to the southern side of Rodney Bay.

RestaurantsRodney Bay boasts the best collection of restaurants in the Windward Islands. Seafood includes fresh local crab, lobster and lombi, a large shellfish served from a barbecue or cooked in a delicious spicy sauce. Admiral Rodney rum is well known in the Caribbean and strongly recommended as the sun goes down – though beware – it is much more potent than its flavour suggests!

Managing ExpectationsWeather: As we are sailing, weather can be a factor that we cannot control, although we will always do our very best to ensure sunshine and sangria! Also, if heavy weather is experienced, this can sometimes affect the itinerary.Socializing: As we are on a boat and often in close quarters, be mindful of your fellow crew members.

Currency & LanguageThe Eastern Caribbean Dollar and the U.S. Dollar are the currencies accepted in St. Lucia and Bequia. The Euro is accepted on Martinique and major credit cards are accepted in most, but not all, establishments. There are also a number of banks and ATMs on St. Lucia and Martinique. English is the official spoken language on St. Lucia, with Creole French spoken as a second language. The official language on Martinique is French.

Flights to St Martin (SXM)Flights are not included, and you are responsible for booking your own flight, however, Clive will be on hand to assist with flight information. There are various carriers that fly into St. Lucia with good rates around the $500–$600 range.Email Clive at [email protected]

Extending your TimePeople often like to extend their Caribbean experience with some on-land vacation time, either arriving days earlier or leaving days later. We recommend you do this as, once you get down there, you always wish you had more time!!!!

What to BringTry and pack light as there is not much room for luggage on-board.

Other essential items include:

As you will all be aware, any liquid items must be max. 100ml, and if you are taking a carry-on they must be placed in a clear plastic bag. We will be on island time, so casual dress is the norm. If we go on shore for dinner, casual dress is acceptable.
