discovery. Three words that singer, songwriter, and musician Dione Taylor use when describing herself and her latest offering Born Free. In this edition of Notes & Quotes, Dione Taylor discusses her new album Born Free, the journey that brought her to making it, what makes her tick as an artist, and what lies ahead with respect to her musical endeavours.
Taylor has a history deeply rooted in music. Growing up in Saskatchewan, she is the first to
say that she comes from a family that is “really connected to the gift of song”. Her father a pastor, Dione’s first introduction to music was in the church. She was playing organ at age four, and was the musical director of the church by age ten. When she first broke into the music industry, her premiere release, Open Your Eyes, 2004, was nominated for a JUNO award. It certainly set the pace for what has been a musical journey filled with accomplishment. Dione Taylor has played for Queen Elizabeth II – twice – as well as in the White House, and the list of prestigious performances only continues to grow.
When asked about some of the best highlights of her musical career to date, Dione Taylor offers this:
“Singing with, and being able to meet Patti LaBelle in Montreal was amazing. She looked gorgeous. When I first met her, she could barely talk, trying to preserve her voice. I told her a remedy I knew of, and I heard her asking for it. That night, she absolutely killed it! Playing at the White House was another amazing experience too. Dr. Billy Taylor, the Artistic Director for the Kennedy Center asked me to come and perform during black music month”.
Taylor’s most recent release (Born Free, 2015) is garnering a lot of attention, so the conversation naturally shifted to a discussion on the process, the intention behind it, and Dione’s inspiration to create the seven track album. When talking about the project, Taylor explains;
“My mom always hoped that I would release a “gospel” album. For years I declined because I misunderstood and felt that I didn’t have the right or the place to sing gospel music anymore because of my beliefs/convictions - or maybe my LACK of beliefs/convictions! I am a part of special and unique group of people called “PK’s" or Pastor’s Kids. Growing up within the Pentecostal/Apostolic umbrella of Christianity was an interesting challenge. We were expected to be and act perfect within an obviously imperfect world. When you see hypocrisy first hand and head first it really messes up your faith! Some choose or learn to ignore and turn the other cheek while others simply cannot just let things be. There are two types of pastor’s kids – the first type are the ones that live by the book and follow closely in the footsteps of their parents and the church and God. The second type, the Prodigal, are ones that are Worldly and willful and strong. They are termed “backsliders”, and considered to be fallen from faith and grace. Somewhere between the two is where I have chosen to reside. I choose to spread unconditional love through my music. The word Gospel means truth. It takes a lot of courage to speak your truth, and takes balls and voice to live your truth. Born Free is
the Gospel according to my truth. Some of the topics covered in this album were a difficult process for even me to become clear on, so I am really proud of it”.
When asked to contemplate what inspires Dione as a writer in whole, she says; “I am inspired by people. It’s very interesting when you talk about truth and spirituality. You find out that people are so different from one another – they vibrate differently. That is a huge source of inspiration for me.,”.
When prompted to talk about what she thinks are her strongest attributes as an artist, Taylor provides this insight; “Probably my personality, and my honesty. I also spent a lot of time practising in my own space before I dug a little deeper and took the chance of sharing my music, so, I think that being able to push my boundaries has really made me grow too”.
Taylor is also swift to offer some words of advice to other aspiring artists. She says, “If you have a “plan B”, then don’t get into the music business! Go and do it 100%. Have fun, and do everything with integrity.”
The conversation organically led to asking the question: what does Dione want listeners to know about her?
She says; “It may sound a bit cheesy, but, I want people to feel something. I want something to resonate, or people to investigate. Investigate themselves, and ultimately learn something about themselves”.
Dione Taylor has been on tour in support of Born Free, and for those who would like to see her live, there are several shows of mention in the months to come. She has performances scheduled at the Beaches International Jazz Festival, the Markham Jazz Festival and the Kitchener Blues Festival, to name a few. Most notably, she is slated to perform at the upcoming Women’s Blues Revue on November 19th at Massey Hall. Brian Sasaki and the Scuffed Souls | Toronto, ON Brian Sasaki and the Scuffed Souls are a truly original Rockabilly, Blues & Swing act that bring together dynamic musicianship with tongue-in-cheek lyricism and vocal flare. With the positive energy the band delivers to each live performance, the audience always feels included. The group has just finished recording their debut EP, “Not for Prophets,” captured live-off-the-floor in Sutton, Ontario.
Jay Pollmann | Cayuga, ON Jay Pollmann is a southern Ontario musician/songwriter born in Hamilton and raised just outside the small town of Cayuga. In 2013 Jay set out to launch a solo career finding an outlet for his musical ideas through his acoustic guitar with help from his brass slide, harmonicas, his feet and the odd tambourine stomp. He sings songs about the things he knows from “steering with your knees” to “closing down the local watering hole.” Channelling many styles and influences through his acoustic filter, the sound that forms is something Jay calls “Foot Stompin’ Rootsy Blues”. Never one to model or mimic himself after other artists Jay’s sound is organic, original, raw and full of energy.
Jesse Greene Band | Ottawa, ON After the successful release of her first musical foray, a self-titled EP called inevitably, “The Jesse Greene Band,” Jesse has found herself composing songs for her second album with a new rhythm section comprised of veteran musician Bassist Kurt Walther, and drummer Matt Wood. Marc Seguin, her long-time and always entertaining harp player remains with the band as the only holdover from the previous ensemble. Sons of Rhythm | Toronto, ON Take an energetic blues sound, mix it with a modern edge, throw in four magnetic personalities, and you'll have the powerhouse band that is Sons of Rhythm. Andre Bisson | Hamilton, ON When one thinks of all the great performers of soul and rhythm & blues music, one doesn't usually associate it with a young man from Northern Ontario - until they meet Andre Bisson. The award winning composer, arranger, guitar player and vocalist is one of the hardest working musicians around. Soulful, talented and sharp, Bisson was clearly born with a passion for music and performing, as well as the smarts and talent to pull it all together and build a large following in Southern Ontario and beyond.
Spencer MacKenzie | Ridgeway, ON 16 year-old guitarist/singer Spencer Mackenzie has been making a name for himself in Southern Ontario by performing with some notable heavyweights on the blues music scene and earning
praise everywhere he goes. In 2013 he won the Niagara Music Awards Rising Star award and performed in the 2016 Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. In May 2016 he released his debut CD Infected With The Blues.

Kudos: Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival artistic director and Maple Blues Award committee member Peter North has been inducted into the Edmonton Blues Hall of Fame in the Builders category, which is designed “to recognize individuals and organizations who have contributed to the
Edmonton blues community through their work.” North’s eclectic career has included stints as a writer, journalist, radio producer, radio announcer and music promoter, as well as producing a music column for the Edmonton Sun and Journal newspapers. The induction took place May 29.
Blues for Soldiers: The 3rd annual Blues for Soldiers event takes place in Brantford on
Saturday July 9. This Blues Festival is held in support of veterans who are homeless and suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). This fundraiser will pack the Henry Street Brant Artillery Gunners Club outside parking lot and patio featuring exciting blues bands throughout the day: Spencer MacKenzie, Smoke Wagon Blues Band, Brant Parker Band, Jerome Godboo, and Jack de
Johnny Rawls is part of a great blues component at this year's Beaches Jazz in Woodbine Park. He plays with his Big Band on Sunday July 17th at 6:30pm. The Blues Tribe: Each month The Blues Tribe profiles a different Canadian Blues artist, most recently Canadian rockabilly blues band The Kat Kings. They interview band leader Kevin McQuade who discusses writing some of the songs for his new album at the hospital bedside of his daughter, the story behind the band name, and showcases his custom guitars. Rez Blues in Toronto: Murray Porter is coming in from Vancouver to play a solo set at The Eagles Club, 17 Elm Street in Toronto. on Friday, July 8. David Deleary will open. Rez Bluez was a showcase at Toronto’s Silver Dollar for 13 years, before it became a TV variety series on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for 2 seasons. The show featured some of the best in Native blues and comedy. Rez Bluez was also a one hour radio documentary in Elaine Bomberry’s award-winning series ‘The Aboriginal Music Experience’. Now back to the original model of having a live music showcase at blues-friendly venues, Rez Bluez shows have popped up in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, over the past 6 years.

Paul DesLauriers Band Relentless Big Toe/Select
After many years of hard work Paul DesLauriers is finally getting the kind of recognition he deserves. With his two bandmates, Greg Morency & Sam Harrisson, he has responded with new music that more than rises to the occasion. Relentless is one hard rocking disc, as befits one of the finest power trios working today. First among equals for me here is the slide-driven “Wipes Away Your Sin”, with its attractive melody and the slow blues centrepiece, “If I Still Had You” which deals candidly with the conflicting feelings in a breakup. The opener, “Stewtro Rock (Just Got Back)” itself opens with a quote from the late Lonnie Mack’s “Wham”, a very nice tribute. “Ten Feet Tall” was the song released first, a stone solid rocker. The lyrics, over top of all those guitars were written by DesLauriers and Alan McElcheran and they get into some fun double-entendres on “We Just Might” and “Gonna Make You Move (Part 1).” “(Part 2)” seems to be an excerpt from a much longer jam that this song no doubt becomes in performance. DesLauriers is a very good singer but what you’ll take away from this disc is the remarkable interplay between these veteran players. If you’ve caught them live you’ll know that this disc, recorded in a studio, captures the band performing live – a very difficult thing to pull off. As a band and individually they’ve won many awards, this disc will get them more. They tour relentlessly, check out www.pauldeslauriersband.com for the next show near you, and get this disc.

Jimmy Bowskill & Carlos del Junco Blues, Etc… Big Reed
These two have been performing as an acoustic duo for a while now and having seen them live, I’d like to thank them for documenting what they do so well. They start right into the blues portion with an original, “Beale St. Toodle-oo”, a toe tapper of an acoustic blues with Jimmy Bowskill on vocals. Carlos del Junco takes the vocal lead on his lovely “Roll Away The Stone”, as fine a pop tune as you’ll hear anywhere. “Heaven’s Where You’ll Dwell” is an older tune, from Carlos’ Big Boy album written by Kevin Cooke and the duo version, with Bowskill on electric guitar, highlights his ground breaking harmonica soloing, as opposed to the more subdued accompanying role he plays elsewhere. This song is a modern day retelling of the Robert Johnson Crossroads myth. Bowskill sings on the new co-write, “Confidence Man”, a fine contemporary blues with a lovely harmonica solo. They can do slow, traditional blues too as Bowskill takes on Muddy’s You Can’t Lose What Never Had” - a fine vocal indeed. John Lee Hooker’s “Hug You” gets a simply marvellous live performance - you won’t be able to sit still. One of Bowskill’s heroes is John Hurt and his “Spike Driver Blues” is another treat. Otis Spann’s “The Blues Don’t Like Nobody” concludes with another fine vocal from Bowskill. It’s the second live performance here, the rest are studio tracks. Carlos’ harp work is rightly praised everywhere but Bowskill’s guitar work is equally outstanding. I hope they can continue this collaboration for a long time. This is the third disc since David Vest’s arrival on this side of the border and the third with The Willing Victims: Teddy Leonard on guitar, Gary Kendall on bass and Mike Fitzpatrick on drums. This combination justs gets better and better and Vest has come up with some of the best new songs I’ve heard in a long time. The horn section of Pat Carey & Howard Moore here really makes a difference as well. The wonderfully titled “Staring Down The Barrel Of The Blues”, with its infectious groove, may be the best of these. “We’re All Sharecroppers Now” is close behind, a statement about the economy that rings all too true – purposely a 12-bar but new ones this good are rare indeed. “Biscuit Rolling Baby” is a remarkably cliché-free song about his baby leaving, especially the lines about what he does now that she’s gone. He returns to the theme for the chugging “Come Back To Bed”, again in a most original fashion. The rocking “Stop This Madness” is a heartfelt plea, the verses about too many guns and their glorification in the media are spot on. The concluding song is just Vest and his piano, he wants to leave the city and get back to some of that “Red Dirt Remedy”. One of the earlier songs is called “The Blues Live On”, each verse lists departed blues legends, including Jeff Healey, Dutch Mason & Hock Walsh, among some names that aren’t normally on this kind of list but that reflect his long history in the Gulf States & Texas, before concluding each verse with that title. It just seems appropriate to write that as long as David Vest is around, the blues will certainly live on. He’ll be here for the Beaches Jazz Festival at the Woodbine Stage on July 17 @ 2:30 with the Willing Victims. He’ll be back for the Southside Shuffle. He’ll be devestatin’ indeed. Al Lerman Slow Burn Self
The members of Fathead are keeping busy between albums with their own projects, none more so than bandleader Al Lerman, who treats us to his fourth solo disc. He has assembled a band and it features members of Fathead plus some musicians who if not alumnae are certainly close friends. Al isn’t the only songwriter in Fathead but he is here, with one exception, and a most satisfying program it is. He concentrates on harp & sax for Fathead but he plays all the guitars here and adds percussion, no sax this time. The uptempo “Don’t Push Your Mess On Me” is a good choice to open, a gospel-styled plea for restraint with Jana Reid on backing vocals. “It Takes Me All Night Long” has some clever lyrics about aging. “Bad Luck Blues” is a well-told and sung tale of a bank robbery in years past in Havelock, his home for several years now. “Totally Out Of Wack” is a Chicago blues with lovely harp, a ‘truth will come to the light’ song. Some fine piano from Lance Anderson backstops the harp. Lance sticks around for the slow blues, “Younger Than Me”. In this one, Al sings to a father who died early – our narrator is now older than his father was in the photo on the wall. He picks up the tempo right away though with a song about what you can achieve if you try, “Any Way You Want”. Sly humour underlines the swampy “Tattoo Like You”. “Kokomo” is the only non-original and with Omar Tunnoch and Bucky Berger helping out, you get a sense of how well a contemporary band plays traditional material, it is the foundation after all. “Slow Burn” is just Al on harp, doubling on electric guitar on a lovely instrumental. That’s an Omar Tunnoch painting on the cover. Producer Alec Fraser also played bass and Al Cross drums. Maybe Al will get Fathead to play some of these songs when they play Hugh’s Room on July 23rd. Jerome Godboo All 4 One Self
Jerome Godboo’s career has stretched over most of the recent history of our blues scene. Since arriving from Ottawa as a member of the Phantoms, he has become a mainstay, an exciting singer & entertainer, a first-call harp player and a masterful songwriter. He has released a number of albums over that time and for some of them he has run out of copies. To remedy that situation and perhaps remind us of his past achievements, he has assembled a package incorporating the best of four CDs. All 4 One contains, in reverse chronological order, highlights of Rooting Out My Devils, Humdinger, Pain and the Glory and Deep Down at Grossman’s. Programmed to resemble a typical live set, you’ll notice immediately how much variety Jerome brings to his songs. For recordings, he almost always uses his live lineup of guitar, bass and drums, making the inventiveness more obvious and necessary. Even within more tradtional structures like “Humdinger”, the arrangement is never boring. It wasn’t always as mainstream as this, though. The songs done live at Grossman’s are wisely sequenced together, as they are considerably wilder and more adventurous (the far more traditional “Devil” does stand out here) but that’s what he was into at the time. He concludes this disc with “Sing For My Supper”, his spot on hommage to the life of a working bluesman. Jerome’s masterful harp work rocks throughout, as do his vocals. His ability to turn everyday events (“Spin Cycle”, “Get On Your Bike”) into blues songs is unique in our scene. The excellent Shawn Kellerman is on guitar most of the time, with Eric Schenkman, Pat Rush & Damien Arokium on the others. Alec Fraser and Al Cross are on bass and drums and there is a completely different lineup for the Grossman’s set. This Chicago Blues label is celebrating its 45th Anniversary with this two-disc set and a star-studded opening night at The Chicago Blues Festival. Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials opened, followed by Tommy Castro & The Painkillers and headliner Shemekia Copeland. They invited Corky Siegel, Toronzo Cannon and Curtis Salgado as guests in their sets and surely provided an evening worthy of the celebration. Alligator Records, along with Stony Plain Records, has multiple celebration sets and this one is equally well selected by label president Bruce Iglauer - it’s a remarkable testament to the label that after six of these there is still so much wonderful music that hasn’t been used. Newer acts on the label such as Toronzo Cannon, Selwyn Birchwood & Jarekus Singleton are joined by legendary earlier ones such as Hound Dog Taylor, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor and Son Seals for a 37-song package selling for the price of one. In its 45-year history Alligator has brought us the finest in contemporary blues artists, handling touring and even management, if needed. You’ll notice that several of the legends have passed on since their seminal Alligator recordings but their place has been taken be artists who clearly have the potential to reach that status. Not represented is a new release that I haven’t had a chance to write about, the tribute to Blind Willie Johnson, God Don’t Never Change, with superb performances by Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, the Cowboy Junkies and the Blind Boys of Alabama. As well, a documentary by Robert Mugge, Pride & Joy, devoted to the 20th Anniversary Tour combining concert footage and the history of the label is now available on Blu-Ray.
