Farewells
A few farewells this year to
some of our staff. Mrs
Sandra Lynch has been
working at Carenne for
over 10 years and most
recently job sharing with

We have certainly enjoyed
having Sandra at Carenne
and she will be sorely
missed. We also farewell
Mrs Louise Hallstrom who
has been working as an
itinerant hearing teacher in
recent years but has also
been teaching at Carenne
for well over 15 years.
Louise has been a valuable
member of the Carenne
team and we wish her well.
Finally, we farewell Mr
Aaron Lange who has been
working with us at the
Tutorial Centre this year.
Aaron is moving south and
will take up a position at
The Highlands School. A
big thanks to Sandra,
Louise and Aaron for your
support and dedication to
our students.
We wish everyone a safe
and happy holiday and will
see you all when students
return on Tuesday 30th
January.

the practise they instigated to
enable Colin to achieve this.
We are all very proud of him.

Narrabeen Camp
The senior school have just
returned from their annual
school camp at Narrabeen
Sport and Recreation Centre.
This was a fantastic
opportunity for our students
to have fun, learn some
valuable skills and make new
friends. Everyone came home
talking about their favourite
activity and their favourite
meal. As staff we were very
impressed with the
outstanding behaviour of our
students and we were very
proud of their efforts to learn
and grow. It was pleasing for
us to hear how many students
wanted to return next year.
Class M were particularly
impressive on the high ropes,
while Class R mastered the
canoeing. Class S were the
experts at the bow and
arrows, veritable Robin
Hoods. Class N had
exceptional skills with the
teamwork. While Class L and
Class O were the epitome of
synchronised swimmers,
elegant and graceful. Well
done everyone and
congratulations for trying new
and scary things (including the
food).
Swim School
It is that time of year again
and we currently have 18
students participating in
swim school. I was
impressed to attend on
Monday and be able to
watch the students in their
pursuit of swimming
excellence. All students
tried their best and listened
really well to the instructors
and their teachers.

CLASS E Aimee Sutton (Teacher) Angie Cranston (SLSO)
What a finish to the year. Class E have been super busy finishing up all their units of work
including Safe Living unit and a mini Christmas unit. We have continued to read many
amazing books throughout the term and create beautiful artworks to match each story.
Class E have engaged in daily reading through “Literactive” and we are starting to see
some clever little readers. Well done class E!!
It was wonderful to see the growth and progress each student has made this year in
achieving their goals. This is evident in their individual reports and the work students
have accomplished in 2017. Now it is time for a well-earned rest over the Christmas
holidays and we wish the families of Carenne School a safe happy holiday. Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CLASS Mc
Kylie McDonald (Teacher)
Yvette Smith (SLSO)
OH DEER! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Class Mc!
We have all had a tremendously busy year, full of fantastic
learning, amazing achievements and friendships. Thank you to
all our lovely families for a great year of learning together. We
hope you all have a wonderfully relaxing holiday break. Merry
Christmas from Class Mc.

CLASS C
Kerryn Café/Alison Begg (Teacher)
Karina Molenkamp (SLSO)
It’s hard to believe it, but the end of the year is almost here. It has been an extremely busy term
which has made the time absolutely fly!
We have been enjoying completing activities from our ‘Christmas Around the World’ unit of work.
We have learnt how other countries celebrate Christmas as well as how they are similar or
different to us. We learnt that in some countries they don’t celebrate Christmas at all.
This week we have started our learn to swim program. The children have learnt water
confidence, how to float and swimming strokes. It has been a lot of fun but also very tiring. I
think there will be some exhausted children (and teachers) by the end of the week!
It’s been lovely to look back at the year that was when writing the student’s end of year reports.
They should all be very proud of their efforts in reaching their IEP goals. Thank you all for your
continued support throughout the year. We appreciate your input into your child’s learning
program.
We hope you have a safe, relaxing break. Merry Christmas and our best wishes for a happy and
healthy New Year!
Kerryn, Molly and Alison.

CLASS F
Sue Flude (Teacher)
Emma Rush (SLSO)
Mrs Flude and Mrs Rush would like to congratulate all the students in Class F on a fantastic year
together. Everyone has worked very hard and have accomplished and improved many new skills.
Everyone has been busy with reading and maths groups. We are having fun helping Santa with his
money for his shopping list. We are all discovering how other countries celebrate Christmas and
New Year. Students in Class C and F are exhausted every afternoon from trying so hard at our
swimming lessons. Some of us have been doing freestyle and backstroke skills whilst others are
becoming more confident in the water. We wish you all a happy and safe Christmas holiday.

CLASS W
Myles Woodward (Teacher)
Stephanie Cupples/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
What an amazing year! Class W have continually demonstrated their ability to work together and
to learn as a group. 2017 has seen the students from Class W participate in may sporting events
including Indoor Cricket, the Carenne Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, Indoor Soccer, Netball,
the Multi-Sports day, and abseiling (thanks to ASPIRE). We have also had the opportunity to
enjoy a visit from Questacon, participate in our Easter Hat Parade, marvel at the Xanadu
performance, become engaged in the Sensory Workshop, and learn from Healthy Harold. Other
events we have been involved in include the many dance workshops and performances organised
by our wonderful staff here at Carenne, and our PBL reward days where we have enjoyed
activities with our peers.
I have been constantly impressed with the manner in which the students have developed their
social skills and focus during class time. Class W have Investigated many topics this year including
the Australian Gold Rush, states of matter, the stages of plant growth, and our place in the world.
We have engaged with our community through weekly outings to shops and businesses in our
local area and once again entered the Waste-2-Art Exhibition with excellent model replicas of our
homes.
Steph and myself would like to thank all of the parents for their support throughout the year and
wish everyone a safe and joyous Christmas period.

CLASS M
Clare Moore/Sandra Lynch (Teacher)
Sally Reedy/Wendy Lynch (SLSO)
It’s been a very positive and productive year in Class M. The students have made very pleasing
progress with their Individual Education Programs and are to be congratulated for their positive
attitude towards learning. Our days and weeks throughout the year are always busy and the year
has flown by. We have played a range of sports, learnt about the history of Carenne School,
studied the work of famous artists (and created a wonderful gallery of artworks in our room),
danced to “Thriller” at The Eisteddfod and investigated Ancient Rome. These are just a few of
the many activities that have made up our school year. By far, one of the highlights of the year
has been our High School Sport and Recreation Camp. For many in Class M, it was the first time
they had participated in an excursion that involved two night away from home! It was a fantastic
experience for all the students (not one word spoken about missing home) and we are so proud
of the way in which the students embraced every new experience the Camp had to offer. It’s
been a great pleasure to share the school year with Class M and we wish everyone and their
families a safe and happy holiday.

CLASS B
Anne Baskerville/Meg Turner-Mann (Teacher)
Kym Tattersall (SLSO)
Well another year has come and gone so quickly. All the students have made positive progress in
all their individualised programs and have enjoyed the year together.
Kaydee, one of our students has had a tough year health wise and we wish her all the best and
hope that 2018 will be a more positive one and that she will be ready for school next year.
Will and his mum and dad are almost home after their fantastic adventure. We have loved
following their travels with lots of photos and text messages.
We would also like to wish Georgie and her family all the very best as she moves on to the next
stage of her life post school. Thank you for all the good times and great memories we have had
together in Class B.
All of us at the ‘Resort’ would like to thank everyone that helped us out during 2017 and would
like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
Until we catch up next year,

CLASS K
Meg Turner-Mann (Teacher)
Juliette van Emmerik/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
We have had a busy few weeks in Class K. Aidan and Aaron had an exciting time at
camp. They did lots of activities including ropes, swimming and basketball. The rest
of the class were at school doing lots of hard work: art and craft, cooking and bike
riding to name a few of our strenuous activities. We have had a great year but we
are all looking forward to the holidays and Christmas and Mrs Kemp’s and Will’s
return next year. Have a great Christmas and New Year and a happy holiday.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We would like to wish you all a very safe and
happy Christmas. Thankyou to everyone that has helped our class this year. Good luck to

CLASS S
Peta Sykes (Teacher)
Kathleen Matheson (SLSO)
Class S had a wonderful time at the Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Camp. The
boys overcame some big fears on the high ropes.
The students all learnt the value of team work and good communication skills in the
initiatives games as well as in the canoes. The students really enjoyed doing archery
and learnt that its all about patience and hand-eye coordination skills.
We would like to thank everyone and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a
safe and wonderful new year.

CLASS N
Terry Neal (Teacher)
Marg Rowe/Robyn Staader (SLSO)
The students have had a great final term in Class N and we are now winding down for the year.
We have started to clean up the classroom and some of the artwork off our walls and they will be
coming home soon. Everybody had a great time at the Narrabeen Sport and Recreation camp
recently. Most of our Class N students were there and participated in some great activities with
lots of fun. What a great night we had at last weeks Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and it was
fantastic to see our Matty graduating and looking a splendid young man, waiting to move onto
his next chapter in life - that of life after school. We all wish him the best of luck. Looking forward
to our Carenne Presentation afternoon next week and also the Pool and Pizza Day. We hope
everyone has an exciting Christmas and a safe New Year. See you all back here in 2018.

CLASS O
Christine Okello (Teacher)
Di Klavins/Julie Buining (SLSO)
Our class had an amazing year of hard work with great results. We have not only grown
taller during the year but have also improved in most areas of study and our involvement
in extra curricula activities made our learning even more fun. Science, even though
challenging, became our favourite subject. We did lots of experiments and projects during
those lessons. Our class spent time visiting the public library, which became our weekly
routine. While at the library we got to read, access library books and other resources that
the library offers. Narrabeen excursion was fun and time well spent. We can now sit back,
relax and enjoy Christmas with family. Merry Christmas everyone!

CLASS L
Ros Luther/Ellen Sutton (Teacher)
Melinda Gavin/Donna Kennedy (SLSO)
We have been exceptionally busy this term going to camp and School Spectacular.
Camp was awesome and the boys were an incredible help, listening to instructions and following
direction well.
First of all we went canoeing which was great fun as it was so hot when we arrived. The boys
were very helpful, carrying the canoes as a team down to the water and launching off onto the
lake. We also made a camp fire and cooked damper on a stick, archery, swimming and team
games which were great fun.
By the end of camp we were exhausted but happy. On the Friday Mrs Kennedy and Luther took
the boys down to the Quodos Arena to watch The School Spectacular. Mrs Gavin picked up the
girls and made their way from Bathurst. It was an amazing concert and we vow that we will go
again hopefully next year!!

CLASS A
Michael Auld (Teacher)
Michael Phillips (SLSO)
We would like to thank everyone who have helped Class A throughout the year especially the
families of our students.
It has a been a very busy last couple of weeks this term. Zachy and Anthony had their graduation
last week and it was a wonderful night for Zach and Anthony as well as for their families. Zach and
Anthony have contributed greatly to the culture of Carenne. They have helped with various
projects such as the Carenne Cattle Stud and Riding For Disabled. They have undertaken work
experience at various sites and have developed many skills and friendships over this time. We
wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
A number of students went on the Senior Camp and had a marvellous time. They went canoeing,
bushwalking, high ropes activities and archery. The weather was great and the students were
very tired by the end of the camp.
A number of students who could not go on camp helped Mr Phillips back at school organising the
computers for next year. This was an excellent learning experience for the students.
Class A students and teachers would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday.

Macquarie Tutorial Centre
Leeanne Graham/Adam Lange/Madeline McAllister (Teacher)
Jodie Toomey/Khiara Ryan (SLSO)
It is hard to believe that we are in week 9 of Term 4 with Christmas looming. Where has this year
gone?
This term has continued to see our students working diligently in our garden which continues to
thrive. Students enjoying the fruits of their labor and at the moment strawberries are the hot
ticket. Potatoes are also very close to harvest and students are looking forward to cooking their
own produce. Both the senior and junior classes are enjoying the responsibility of taking care of
the aquaponics system, monitoring water temperature, tank cleanliness and the feeding of the
trout. At the end of last term our chickens hatched. We ended up with 19 new chickens who
spent their first couple of weeks in the staffroom and at Mrs Toomey’s home. Of the 19 that
hatched all but 3 were kept and the others have been rehomed. The 3 hens that we kept are now
at home with our other chickens and rooster in the Macquarie Tutorial Centre chicken coop.
The Macquarie Tutorial Centre would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Lange for the
dedication and commitment that he has shown towards the Macquarie Tutorial Centre and the
students in the junior class throughout 2017 and we all wish him well as he takes up a new
position in the Southern Highlands Term 1 2018.
We would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Sport and Recreation
Terry Neal
We have had another fantastic final term of the year with our sport and recreation program.
This term we have been playing basketball with Hayley in the COLA and learning good basic
basketball skills. Most of the Senior School went to Narrabeen Sport and Recreation camp
recently for a great three days of fun and sport activities. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed
themselves away from home. Our Middle School students went over the road to the Dream
Cricket Day organised by Kelso High School. We are hoping for good news from when Connor
and Colin with Mrs Hundy and Mr Ryan, go to Adelaide to represent their state at the School
Sports Australia National Athletics Carnival. Good luck boys, and do well.
We have some great sport lined up for early Term 1 next year - with the Carenne Swimming
Carnival, Indoor Cricket, as well as the Regional Swimming Carnival at Dubbo and possibly
Homebush.
Thanks to all our wonderful Carenne staff who helped me to organise and run our sports and
recreation program this year. Great to se so many of our students having fun with their sports
program throughout the year. Thanks everyone!
