EFREE EYE CARE FOR THE POOR

Treating

36% of all eyepatients in Pakistan

Government of SindhUnder a fresh grant that was graciously awarded to LRBT by the Sindh Government for fiscal year 2017-18, we have so far

carried out 4973 cataract surgeries in four of our Sindh Hospitals during the period July-September. This project was especially designed to carry out cataract surgeries on the poor, needy and disadvantaged people in the Province of Sindh.

USAID/SightsaversStandard Chartered Bank under

the Seeing is Believing program in partnership with Sightsavers require LRBT to carry out refraction, cataract and minor surgeries over a period of 3 ½ years beginning July 2016 in its Hospitals at Mansehra and Swat. In order to support this Project, LRBT has also been provided with ophthalmic equipment for use in this project. In the July - September quarter, we conducted 1,534 surgeries.

Sightsavers and LRBT inked a MoU in January 2017 under which also 21,525 cataract surgeries are planned to be carried out at ten designated Hospitals over a period of twelve months. In the 3rd quarter, we have been able to conduct 6,013 cataract surgeries, according to plan. Cumulatively, we have so far conducted 15,513 surgeries. The project is progressing according to schedule.

LRBT is implementing a comprehensive Childhood Blindness initiative in collaboration with USAID by Sightsavers to address the interlinked problems leading to childhood blindness. This involves training of Lady Health workers, teachers and school screening by our teams at Quetta. In the last three months 9,640 school children and 1,350 children from the community have been screened under this project.

Brian Holden Vision InstituteBHVI’s “Our Children’s Vision”

campaign is a global effort emphasizing the need to increase children’s access to eye health on a war footing. This is being implemented by LRBT at all the hospitals in its network.

During the period, July - September, we conducted OPD of 62,114 children of which 1,126 were refracted and 613 glasses were provided to children.

CBM International Under the two contracts inked between CBM and LRBT, 22 students

are to undergo training for a period of one year leading to certification and the second one is a program to carry out 2,200 cataract surgeries this calendar year. Implementation of both programs is underway. Students have been enrolled and are undergoing training at the LRBT School of Ophthalmic Para medicine. In the Cataract Program, we have already conducted 1,650 surgeries at four of our facilities.

Standard Chartered Bank Following successful completion of the

previous LDP’s between SCB and LRBT last year, we now received approval to conduct 1561 cataract surgeries of poor females. In the July to September quarter, we have been able to conduct 750 surgeries, according to plan. This project shall be completed in December 2017.

Partnership AgreementsLRBT gives credit to its partners for its success and is proud to work with them in ongoing projects:

5th July 2017...

F atima came home from school happy that day. She quickly finished her lunch, completed her homework and went out to

play. But this day she was not to return home tired and content after playing with her siblings and friends from the neighborhood. This day was different…

A student of KG 2, hair up in a pony tail and outwardly shy in her demeanor, she has a smile that lights up the room. She is the youngest of four siblings. Unfortunately for them, her father lost his job a couple of months ago due to illness. They live with her uncle who is married and has five children of his own. He has given them a roof over their heads and manages the house expenses. The family together manages with their meager income and they contribute whatever little they can.

They struggle but are content and that’s visible from the peace on their faces. Fatima their youngest is a joy for her parents, with her ready smile she makes friends easily. Every day after coming back from school she has her lunch, does her homework and goes out to play. Today was no different; she stepped out to play, but in no time at all her play ended abruptly when one of the children that Fatima had been playing with, accidently poked her in the eye with a sharp object. Upon hearing Fatima’s cry for help, Shamsa immediately alerted her husband and they rushed Fatima to a nearby neighborhood clinic. She was given first aid and the doctor advised Fatima’s parents to keenly observe her for

the next few days and to go to an Ophthalmologist immediately at the first sign of white spots in her eye or if she complained of poor vision.

Not able to sleep or eat and sick with worry, Shama watched Fatima like a hawk. Initially Fatima’s eye appeared to be healing but a couple of weeks later Shamsa noticed that Fatima did not focus on objects like other children did and a white spot had started to show. Shamsa knew that there might have to be a surgery and asked

her husband to take a loan from relatives so that they could show her to a good

Ophthalmologist. Despite their best efforts they were able to raise only Rs. 15,000. Shamsa feared that if they delayed taking Fatima for treatment, her eye might worsen.

During Ramzan, Fatima’s uncle while watching the news had seen a TV ad of a young girl,

Fatima’s age who could not see and she was saving money for her

surgery but she was taken to an eye hospital that treated the poor for free. He

recalled the name and asked his friends about it, he was told its LRBT hospital in Korangi.

He told his brother and together they took Fatima for a checkup. Fatima was examined thoroughly in the Pediatric department and her left eye was operated upon. Her follow up visit showed the surgery was successful. Shamsa who for some time had feared that her daughter had lost her future with the accident heard the sweetest words possible, “Fatima can see clearly again, you have nothing to worry about.”

Fatima is back to her usual routine just more careful this time while playing.

Help us change the lives of millions more like Fatima. Help us turn them into productive members for their families and society. Help us give them a bright future full of love, hope and cheer.

Coping with the ever-growing patient volume

North KarachiAccording to plan, a new, large operation theatre with additional tables has been completed and has started functioning in September. This exercise to maximize the available limited space by remodeling is being done to enable us to accommodate the growing number of patients coming to this facility which will give us more space in screening rooms and waiting areas too. Work at the facility is progressing smoothly and is planned to be completed by end December this year.

Lar (Multan)A new Surgical Complex in Phase II of the Project is being constructed to provide enhancement incapacity so that patients requiring surgery do not have to wait for an extended period. This surgical complex will have a comfortable waiting area, a number of operation theatres and allied services. It is expected to complete and be fully operational by the end of November this year.

The entire project which is being funded by a UAE based donor who had earlier also sponsored the renovation and expansion of Gambat and Khanewal Hospitals.

KhanewalA new additional operation theatre with all allied services has just been completed in addition to the new waiting area, screening rooms and a minor theatre. Doctors’ accommodation and canteen also needed to be refurbished and expanded which are expected to be completed by end November. This project is being sponsored by the same generous donor who had financially supported its earlier major expansion and new ophthalmic equipment.

QuettaFor a long time the primary waiting area for males and female patients has been susceptible to adverse weather conditions due to damage suffered and urgently required a new roof,

tiled flooring and comfortable seating. This project is fast reaching completion and is expected to be commissioned earlier than its schedule of end November this year.

LRBT started off as a small mobile unit in Tando Bago over 32 years ago. Over the years, it has spread throughout the country with 19 hospitals and 56 eye care centers. The journey of growth and expansion continues.

2 3

LRBT has treated over 36 million patients and impacted the lives of millions more by enabling the treated to go back to leading fulfilling lives. Baby Fatima’s story is one such example.

LRBT – Foodpanda Partnership in Ramzan LRBT’s Annual Ramzan Campaign 2017 kicked off with a holistic TVC, Print, Radio, Outdoor and Social Media Campaign. The campaign’s aim was to highlight the plight of the poor blind people of Pakistan and raise awareness in the greater community. As

part of this campaign we partnered with Foodpanda, a global online food delivery marketplace. Foodpanda through its online ordering system collected Zakat and donations for LRBT and helped further our cause by giving donors an additional convenient medium to ensure that their Donations and Zakat reach us.

Cornea Donation Corneal issues are the second largest cause of visual impairment in Pakistan. These individuals are condemned to a life of dependence & despair. Pakistan faces a massive shortage of corneas as people do not donate their eyes after death. Some kind donors donate corneas that are arranged from Srilanka but the numbers are small. There are only a handful of people who have come forward and have been generous enough to pledge their eyes to make a difference. You are one of them. We would like to thank you for donating your corneas to LRBT. Two lives will be transformed by your generous contribution.

LRBT - USAMr. Rupani hosted an event in Houston, USA on 28th June to introduce LRBT to the community. Mr. Najmus Saquib Hameed, Chairman LRBT, apprised the attendees on the milestones that LRBT has achieved in its 32 year history and plans for the future. It was a well attended event with Ms. Aisha Farooqui, Consul General, Pakistan gracing the occasion as Guest of Honor. The event received extensive local media coverage.

GLT – UK Basak Kotler a resident of UK has recently raised £2,400 for the Graham Layton Trust, in aid of free eye care for the poor in Pakistan. She completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the three peaks in one day. The route was 24 miles long and the cumulative elevation is 5,200 feet, so it’s like climbing about 500 floors of a building!

Despite tough weather conditions she persevered and the only thing that kept her going was sheer willpower and the promise she had made to all the people who had supported her selected charity, the Graham Layton Trust.

The Donor’s PerspectiveIrum Latif has pledged to donate both her corneas, she feels that, “We have lived our life and enjoyed the beauty of this world. Now it’s our turn to give this chance to others to be able to experience the same. But this can only happen when people are willing to come forward and donate their corneas so that two lives can benefit.”

Ayesha Khan’s motivation to donate came from a personal reason. Both her father and grandfather had low vision due to Glaucoma and she has seen firsthand how that can limit ones mobility and make one dependent on others. When pledging her corneas she said,” I believe that if I am able to help someone, then I should. The world is a beautiful place; help those who have not been able to see it. Our corneas after our death will not be able to benefit us in any way but by donating them they will be a source of SadqaJariah.”

Ahad Wali had the desire to donate his corneas and help give someone the gift of sight from a very young age. He put his aspirations into action when he came to LRBT and found that there is a streamlined way of doing it and he signed and sent the cornea donation pledge form. He feels that, “We go through life complaining about the little things when instead we should be giving thanks for being blessed with all our senses especially sight. I made the pledge to donate so that someone can fully live their life the way I did.” His sentiments are echoed by his eldest daughter who also plans to donate her corneas.

Imperial College PakistanStudents Society donated £1000 in August 2017, to GLT, for School’s Eye Screening Camp in which 4 schools in Mandra District participated in September and over 1000 pupils were screened.

the Seeing is Believing program in partnership with Sightsavers require LRBT to carry out refraction, cataract and minor surgeries over a period of 3 ½ years beginning July 2016 in its Hospitals at Mansehra and Swat.
