The holiday season is a time of year when people pause to reflect on Christmases past and reminisce with family and friends as they gather for their celebrations. In the spirit of reflecting, I thought it would be fun for some of the CardMaker staff to share their favorite

holiday memories with you.

A special Christmas memory for me is from when I was about 5 years old. My sisters and I sang and danced around the Christmas tree to our favorite Christmas songs giving our parents and grandparents

a memorable performance! Although that was years ago, singing Christmas songs is still a favorite part of the holiday season that I love to share with my family.

Tanya Fox—Editor

One of my favorite childhood memories of Christmas is helping my Grandma wrap Christmas gifts. I would go to her house and we would spend the afternoon surrounded by wrapping paper and ribbons. She usually had cookies or a treat for us to eat while we worked. To this day, one of my favorite things to do during the Christmas season is to spend a Saturday listening to Christmas music, drinking hot chocolate and wrapping all of my gifts.

Brooke Smith—Managing Editor

My favorite Christmas memory is sitting at my parents’ house on Christmas morning after all the presents have been opened and watching A Christmas Story! Not many people realize that the movie is set in Indiana, so it is always special to watch it!

Corene Painter—Technical Editor

My favorite part of Christmas is Christmas Eve night, when the kids have gone to bed (and actually stay in bed), “Santa” has wrapped and stacked the presents and the smell of baked Christmas cookies still lingers in the air. My husband and I like to just sit and relax while listening to Christmas music and admiring the Christmas lights. It is our most peaceful time during the holidays.

Amy Lin—Production Artist

From all of us here at CardMaker, we wish you a holiday season that will bring joy to your heart and happiness for the year ahead!

New to Card MakingI’m a relatively new subscriber to your magazine

and I wanted to let you know how much I love it! I’ve been scrapbooking for many years now, but have just started to make cards. Seeing all the ideas in your magazine has helped me greatly. Before, I didn’t quite know where to start. Now I’m making all my cards and having so much fun doing it.

When your magazine comes in, I want to sit down with a cup of tea and read through it. Instead, I end up stopping, going to my scrapbook room and trying out the new techniques. It takes a while to get through the magazine at that rate, but it’s so inspiring that I just have to stop and try things out!

Also, I was able to download some of your back issues and get even more ideas. But I’m a paper- in-hand type of gal, and I would miss the flipping through the pages and being able to take your magazine with me anywhere, so I will be renewing my paper version of the magazine!

Keep up the great work! It really is a pleasure to read each time it arrives!

Sue M.Kanata, Ontario

The idea behind Readers Reach Out is simple: You are invited to submit your handcrafted cards to various charitable organizations across the country. It is a wonderful opportunity to reach out and send greetings to people who need some cheer and good wishes.

Your Next Theme Is … Cards for Hospitalized KidsCards for Hospitalized Kids (CFHK) was founded by Jen Rubino because of her own battle with a chronic illness and a desire to help other kids facing the same thing. CFHK delivers beautiful, handmade cards to sick kids across America to send messages such as "Stay Strong,” "You Rock" and "Never forget how beautiful you are.” The philosophy of this group is, “Doctors provide the medicine and we provide hope, joy and magic through cards.” People around the country, including celebrities and athletes, send cards to CFHK to distribute to kids in hospitals, and it is their goal this coming year to impact 20,000 kids in this simple, yet meaningful way. To learn more about Cards for Hospitalized Kids, please visit www.cardsforhospitalizedkids.com, @Crds4HosptlKids on Twitter or Facebook.com/CardsForHospitalizedKids.

Send your cards to:Cards for Hospitalized Kids6567 N. OlmstedChicago, IL 60631

Sending Card Cuddle Care PackagesStephanie Busby of Card Cupids sent the following note:

“I just wanted to touch base with you to tell you how thrilled we are to be featured in CardMaker magazine. We have already received a number of cards from your readers and more arrive each week. We are so excited that we will be able to fill lots of packages with lots of cards. In June 2012, over 30 families will be touched by the generosity of the card makers. Thank you for helping us to send smiles to children in need!”

Suggest an OrganizationWe would like this program to benefit people all across the country. If you know of an organization that would welcome handcrafted cards for those it serves, please send a note to us at [email protected]. Groups such as children’s hospitals, nursing homes, military groups and cancer treatment centers often welcome card donations.

Thank you for sharing your time and your handmade cards with others in need.

HOW READERS REACH OUT WORKSIn each issue of CardMaker, we will feature a new recipient organization and appropriate card theme. Using the theme as a guideline, create as many cards as you’d like and mail them to the address provided. Please indicate somewhere on your shipment that you are participating in CardMaker magazine’s Readers Reach Out efforts. This helps both the organization and us keep track of all card donations.

Join us as we chat with CardMaker Blog Team member, stamp artist and designer Kimberly Crawford.

Kimberly CrawfordBy Br o ok e Sm it h

Kimberly illustrates her own line of stamps that include

decorative borders, sentiments and sweet images.

What began as a desire to personalize her wedding invitations has evolved into a paper-crafting career for Kimberly Crawford. Besides being a talented designer, Kimberly also illustrates her own line of stamps called Mint Motif which are only available at iheartpapers.com. The designs, including decorative borders, sentiments and sweet images, represent Kimberly’s fresh and classic style. She has designed projects for a variety of different companies and currently works with Spellbinders™ Paper Arts and Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L™. As a former elementary teacher, Kimberly gets to combine two of her passions—teaching and designing—to inspire others to explore paper crafting and expand their creativity!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started designing.

I have been married to my husband for almost 13 years. We have a 6-year-old son who is in first grade. We recently moved to eastern Iowa, which is a change from being northern Minnesotans all our lives. Before becoming a mom and designing in the paper-crafting industry, I was an elementary teacher and a high school softball coach.

My journey to designing began when I wanted to create a look on our wedding invitations, and my husband mentioned that his mom did this “stamping thing” and she could help. She sent me my first stamping supplies. I fell in love and became addicted. Once my son was born, I got into paper crafting even more.

What are your top five must-have paper-crafting supplies? Die templates, stamps, cardstock, inks and adhesive foam squares.

Which is your favorite holiday/occasion to make cards for? The everyday, thinking about you, thanks for being a great friend, etc.

cards that you can imagine someone opening and smiling. Nothing makes someone’s day like getting real mail.

How did you come up with the name for your stamp line, Mint Motif, and how did you get started designing stamps?

The name came from hours of searching through an online thesaurus. I wanted the name to represent new, fresh, clean and classy, which is what I want my stamp designs to embody. It’s unique, and the alliteration is pretty fun too.

Stamp designing found me. I was asked by Kate Baldwin, owner of i {heart} papers, if I was interested in stamp designing. I was always on the lookout for new stamp ideas, so I began to sketch out ideas and think about images that were missing from my collection.

The Best ThingsD e si g n b y K i m b erl y C r aw for d

Do you sketch out stamp designs on paper, or do you work directly on your computer?

I sketch out my ideas using a little bit of both. Some days I sketch out ideas in a notebook, or I just collect ideas from magazines and the Internet. Other days, I go directly to the computer creating things like backgrounds or borders, mostly because I can create the shapes right there. The funny part about all this is that I cannot draw a thing—nothing. The computer is the way for me to create what is in my head.

What is one of your favorite card-making techniques?

Emboss resist is one of my favorites. I love stamping an image and heat-embossing it, applying ink over the top and bringing out that image from underneath—it’s creating your own amazing patterned paper. Plus, you can mix it up with colored embossing powders and different cardstock bases.

Do you have any favorite websites and/or magazines you get inspired by?

Magazines are still my favorite source of inspiration. There is nothing like sitting down and flipping through the

This alphabet can either be drawn following a baseline or freestyle with letters slightly below or above the adjacent letter. Practice first by drawing on a baseline and then when comfortable, experiment with letter placement.

1. Lightly draw basic uppercase letters. Be sure to leave enough space between each letter so that you have plenty of room to widen letter lines and add decorative details. For rounded letters, draw several shorter connected straight lines in place of rounded lines.

2. Slightly widen each letter line. Draw widened lines so that they overlap one another. Refer to completed alphabet for placement of overlapped areas.

3. Trace over lines with a fine-tip pen or marker. Erase original pencil lines.

4. Draw in details with a fine-tip pen or marker and color in letters with colored pencils, watercolors or markers. Add small leaves if desired. •

Brads & Eyelets B y K i mb er Mc Gr ay

As a card maker, I am always looking for small embellishments that I have in my arsenal to use on projects. Of course buttons are always a great way to add a little extra detail to a project, but don’t forget about brads and eyelets as well.

Both brads and eyelets add that circular detail that a button would add and are available in a wide variety of colors, sizes and designs. While eyelets tend to be only metal, they do come in many different sizes, colors and finishes such as embossed, painted and even epoxy.

Brads are also metal based, but the tops are everything from the basic painted metal to a fun fabric covered design. There is even a tool on the market called the i-Top created by Imaginisce that allows you to create your own brads. The possibilities are unlimited with what you can create a brad topper from to coordinate with your project.

Using Brads & EyeletsUsing brads in your paper crafting is easy. Simply

start by piercing a small hole in your paper with

either a paper piercer, a mini hole punch or a simple thumbtack. You can also make a small slit with a pair of sharp detail scissors. It’s always good to have a piece of craft foam or an old mouse pad under your paper so you don’t mar your table with the sharp end of your scissors or a paper piercer. Next, place the prongs on the back of the brad through the pierced hole. Turn your project over and open the prongs so they lie flat on the back of the project. Sometimes you may need a pair of scissors or tweezers to make separating the prongs a bit easier. Most of the time you can easily open them with just your fingertips.

Like brads, eyelets come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors. They can be a simple painted 1/4-inch eyelet or a large 1–2-inch shaped eyelet that is embossed and covered with an epoxy finish. The choices are as varied as the projects in which they can be used. Eyelets are typically metal and made up of aluminum or a brass alloy and are a bit more labor intensive embellishment. First you will need to create a hole in your project a bit smaller than the eyelet you are going to use. If the hole is too small, you will tear or warp your paper when you place the eyelet in the hole. Also, if you make the hole too large, the eyelet will simply fall right out.

Crop-A-Dile by We R Memory KeepersUpside: It looks like an oversized hole punch. It’s

an all-in-one tool that both punches the hole and sets the eyelets. It will set both aluminum and brass eyelets very easily.

Downside: The reach on the tool is only 1 inch so you are limited on where you can place an eyelet on your project.

Big Bite by We R Memory KeepersUpside: This tool is a larger version of the Crop-A-

Dile. The Crop-A-Dile is a handheld tool and the Big Bite is a desktop tool. It’s an all-in-one tool that both punches the hole and sets the eyelets. It will set both aluminum and brass eyelets easily anywhere on a project up to 12 x 12 inches. The tool has a 6-inch reach.

Downside: The tool is much larger than the other eyelet setters on the market.

Take some time and decide which tool may be best for your situation. If you have a group of crafting friends, ask to try out their tools before purchasing one for yourself. We all have different reasons why we like what we use for eyelet setting.

Uses for Brads & EyeletsIf you’re not sure how to utilize these embellishments,

consider using them as a simple decorative item on your project, just as you would use a button. You can also use them in a utilitarian fashion to secure a tag, ribbon or twine. They are also a great solution for attaching vellum or other transparent items where adhesive may be difficult to use.

Many of us have eyelets and brads in our craft stash that we haven’t used in a while. I challenge you to break them out or purchase some of the new, fun and trendy ones on the market today. Or, if you found eyelets difficult to use in the past, try one of the new tools on the market for setting eyelets. These new tools may make it easier for you than what you were using in the past. Eyelets and brads are a great basic embellishment with a lot of versatility. You might be surprised by how much you like incorporating them in your paper crafting. •

ToolsThere are different tools on the market for both

creating the hole and setting the eyelet. Each of the tools is different in many ways. They all have pluses and minuses. There are, and have been, other types of eyelet setters on the market. The four listed below are the most popular that are available right now.

Eyelet Setter & Hammer combo set by Making Memories

This set uses a combination of the hole punch and setter with a hammer.

Upside: This type of setter will set both aluminum and brass eyelets anywhere on your project.

Downside: With this type of setter, you must pound a metal hole maker and eyelet setter. The pounding is very loud and takes a bit of strength to hammer the eyelet.

Silent Setter by Provo Craft Upside: This setter is “silent” because you don’t

use a hammer to create the hole or to set the eyelet. The tool uses a twisting action with your wrist while pushing down at the same time to both create the hole in your paper and then to set the eyelet. Another upside is that this type of setter will easily set aluminum eyelets anywhere on your project.

Downside: This type of setter is difficult to use with brass alloy eyelets. You need a lot of pressure to set any eyelet that isn’t aluminum.

I hope you have enjoyed this year of challenges. It’s been a lot of fun to see what everyone has come up with each week. I’d love to hear what you think of the challenges and if you have completed any or all of them. Feel free to drop me an email, visit the Card Swap forum, or post about it on the CardMaker Facebook page.

If this is your first time here, please jump right in. The chal-lenges are here to inspire you. You are welcome to tweak and twist them however you wish. If you want to see some of the previous challenges, they are all listed in the Card Swap fo-rum along with samples I have created and interpretations from members. Please visit the CardMaker Magazine Card Swap forum. There is an area set aside just for Challenge Corner cre-ations. We’d love for you to join in the fun and share what you have been inspired to make.

If you have questions or need assistance registering for the fo-rum or uploading your projects, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Challenge 110/16/2012Stamp It Easy

Clean and simple is the way to go when you have a ton of cards to make. So, the challenge is to make a clean and simple card that you can easily duplicate for a note card set, holiday cards, etc. This year for Christmas, I plan on using the PSA Essentials stamps for my cards. They are so easy and cute. You can even get your own personalized stamp from them. Check out their store locator page to find an online store or the nearest retail loca-tion to purchase these stamps. www.psaessentials.com/store locations.htm

Challenge 210/23/2012Fall Colors

Here in Mid-Missouri we are starting to enjoy brisker air and anxiously awaiting the leaves changing color. In celebration of the autumn season, create a card using burnt orange, mustard and burgundy. You can add in a little brown and ivory, but no green, white or black.

Challenge 310/30/2012Personal Thanks

Nancy Burke has dazzled us with her amazing hand-lettering alphabets. I admit I shy away from handwriting anything on cards, except the little personal note inside. The problem with my shyness is that I am overlooking an easy way to add a special, personal touch to my projects that could never be duplicated. I love all the products on the

market, but I find myself longing for a way to make my creations even more “mine.” Hand-lettering a sentiment is the perfect solution. Don’t be scared! You are your own worst critic. Use one of Nancy’s amazing alphabet styles or come up with your own. Hand-letter the sentiment on the front of your card this week and use it as the focal point. Yes, I mean the front. No cheating like I would do and doodle something small inside.

Challenge 411/06/2012Holiday Spirit

It is crop week at the Card Swap forum. I do hope you will join us! This crop is going to be focused on the various holidays celebrated at this time of year. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkah, create a card this week to send or give a friend.

Challenge 511/13/2012Turn the Heat On

A technique that I don’t use nearly enough, but love dearly, is heat embossing. If you haven’t tried this before, be sure to research it a little. It took me a few attempts to be suc-cessful with this technique because I didn’t have the right products. I like using ultra-fine detailing pow-der with VersaMark or VersaFine ink. Gather your supplies and heat it up on a project of your choice.

Challenge 611/20/2012Thankful Places

I love the look of cute little place cards on the table, but after the meal what do you do with them? If you are like me, you toss them out. This year, instead of tossing them out, put them to good use. Create your place cards and then, before or at the end of the meal, pass around a pen to have each guest write something they are thankful

for on their place card. Gather them up and put them in a special place to get out and reflect upon in years to come. You could make this a tradition to create your place cards, write the thankful thoughts and store for years to come. Be sure to include the year and age of the guests.

Challenge 711/27/2012Stuffed

After Thanksgiving, I always just feel stuffed. In recognition of being stuffed, create a card that has a little dimension to it. Do you remember those puffy quilts? You would cut a hole and stuff it full of polyfill to make it really puffy. Use that concept to apply to your card. Punch out a circle or shape of choice, then lay a piece of fabric over the hole and add in batting or polyfill to make it puff through the front of the card. Then layer it onto your card or hide the hole on the inside with a piece of cardstock. •

In this issue we’re focusing on coloring red—a topic that has many color artists seeing red. Here, you'll learn two different techniques and I’ll share tips and tricks for tackling some of the challenges you may encounter.

Coloring Option #1Light to DarkIn the last issue of CardMaker,

we focused on basic blending, and I explained the easiest and most common way of coloring with Copic markers—light to dark. This is the way I typically color, fully saturating the paper with the base color to allow additional shading layers to blend easily.

When coloring with red, you will need to adjust your technique a bit when coloring light to dark to avoid oversaturating the paper and causing bleeding. For these tutorials, I am using a Santa image with the light source in the upper-right corner.

Step 1: Paying close attention to the light source, begin flicking the lightest red (R22) from the highlight area toward the shadow area. Leave the area that will be darkest white (Photo 1). Note: This

is the opposite of how I typically apply the base layer.

Step 2: Begin building up the mid-tone area with a medium red (R24). Apply the ink by flicking

from the middle toward the highlight and from the middle toward the shadow. Note: I like to flick from side to side in a swinging motion. Do not apply the mid-tone completely over the highlight or the darkest shadow areas (Photo 2).

Copic® Coloring Technique: Coloring Red

Page 43: CardMaker 2012-11.pdf

Step 3: Add the dark shading with a dark red (R29). Flick from the white shadow area toward the mid-tone area. Do not cover all of the mid-tone. At this point, no blending has been done and you should have visible dark, medium and light values (Photo 3).

Step 4: Blend together using the medium value to smooth the area from dark to medium and the light value to smooth the area from medium to light. Note: This is the same process as traditional light to dark blending (Photo 4).

The key to this method is to leave the darkest shadow area white to begin with. This keeps the paper from becoming oversaturated when layering colors and helps avoid bleeding or feathering ink.

Coloring Option #2 Dark to LightApplying color and blending dark

to light is another, less common, method of Copic coloring. While it is more difficult to get a smooth blend, it is a technique that comes in handy when working in small areas or with tricky colors like red. I’ve used the same Santa image with the same light source (upper right) for this tutorial.

Step 1: Paying close attention to the light source, begin flicking the darkest value (R29) from the shadow toward the highlight area (Photo 5).

Step 2: Begin building up the mid-tone area with a medium red (R24). Apply the ink by flicking from the middle toward the highlight and from the middle toward the shadow. Create a smooth blend from dark to medium. Leave the highlight area white (Photo 6).

Step 3: Add the highlights with a light red (R22). Flick from the highlight area into the mid-tone area to help create a smooth blend (Photo 7).

The key to this method is to work the ink by flicking to help the values blend together. It takes

a bit more effort and ink than coloring light to dark, but the edges of the image are typically not oversaturated and therefore limits the amount of bleeding and feathering.

Make It PopAnother common problem

people encounter when working with reds is a lack of contrast. Most often, it is necessary to go back and add darker values after blending to enhance the contrast and make the image more visually appealing.

Whether you have colored light to dark or dark to light, you can create more contrast by adding flicks of a darker red (R39) to the shaded areas and use a different color family (RV69) for the cast shadows (Photo 8). Note: By flicking the color in, you shouldn’t have to re-blend the image.

C O P I C© C O L O R I N G T E C H N I Q U E

Tips, Tricks & Troubleshooting• If you have tried the two coloring methods above and still

encounter bleeding or feathering, you might want to try a different paper. Softer papers tend to bleed more than denser ones.

• Make sure to use an absorbent paper underneath your coloring. This will help soak up any excess ink instead of allowing it to feather and bleed.

• Don’t color up to the lines. Know that reds will travel along the paper fibers quickly. Leave a tiny gap between your coloring and the edge of the image. It will fill in as the ink feathers.

• Let each layer dry slightly before adding more ink or blending. It will be a bit more difficult to blend, but it allows the paper to soak up more ink before becoming saturated.

• Be quick—be light! Use a light hand when coloring red and color quickly to avoid fully saturating the paper.

• Always color the red areas first. It’s often the most challenging.• Do not use the Colorless Blender to fix mistakes in red. If you

make a mistake in red, embrace it and use it as an opportunity for embellishment. If you attempt to use the Colorless Blender to “erase” the stray mark, it will only make it worse.

Don’t be afraid of coloring red. It is a challenging color to work with, but it’s well worth the extra effort to master it (Photo 9)! •

pages. I subscribe to several publications from paper crafting to food to home decor. When I have read through all of my magazines, I do enjoy Pinterest.

Besides making cards, what are some of your favorite things to do?

Taking our son to all his activities, hanging out with my family, golf, reading books and playing the piano.

Do you have a favorite card-making tip to pass along to our readers?

Have fun, create, make a mess and try something new. Some of my favorite projects have come from a mistake or error. It’s all about enjoying the process. A card made with love and the recipient in mind is always beautiful! •
