RATIONAL FOR RESEARCH

• The rational for investigating cardboard as viable alternative is instigated by observing tremendous potential of the material, seen during development of cardboard as a packaging material to a structural material. The following slides shall discuss the pros and cons of cardboard as a Architectural Material.

WHY CARDBOARD?

• Cardboard as a material uses the most important principles of REUSE &RECYCLE, which is the basic of any sustainable product.

• ADVANTAGES—a) Economy b)Weight c)Availability d)Manufacturing & Standardization. e) Post production processing is possible. f) Sustainability/Life span. g)Strength.

CONSRAINTS

• A) Creep. B)Poor moisture tolerance's. C)Vulnerable to concentrated loads. D)Insects. E)Fire resistance/Fire retardants.

• The proposed research is searching solutions through global research studies to make the product overcome the above mentioned constraints.

Global solutions search for constraints.

• A constant research is on to make cardboard more suitable for costruction, for example, many materials have been experimented with a view to study water impermiablity, which are as follows, A)Aerosol paints B)Interior paints C)Self adhesive film D)Masking tape E)Wax paper F) Stone sealant G)Wood glue

• H)Aluminium foil I)Vaseline.• Amongst above stone sealent performed

remarkably well as did the cardboard shell covered with the self adhesive film.

Coatings and Treatments for Fire Retardancy

• Following Products have been researched which are as follows:

• 1)Cerami Board 2) Morgan Paper Coaters 3) Micon Intusayf 4) Timber Sealent 5) Polyphen 6)Wax Coatings 7)Self-adhesive film 8)Hydraban 9) Vapour Coat 10)Boric Acid 11) Sugarcane Lignin 12)BreatheCoat.

• Amongst above,Cerami Board and sugarcane lignin have been found better in performance.

Global Examples Of Cardboard Architecture

• Architect Shigeru Ban is credited with pioneering work in Cardboard Architecture. He has worked extensively and created excellent architecture right from bridges, exihibition pavilions, post disaster housing including Bhuj In India and many other structures.Let us View some of the pictorials of his work.

CONCLUSION

• Hence it can be concluded that cardboard composites have immense potential for use in residential & other types of buildings, however a lot of research is needed to make more useable material.

• Author of this presentation is further exploring the possibilities to make cardboard house a reality in Indian context.
